Welcome Welcome to our sparkling autumn 2018 programme with lots of fun and exciting arts events and activities to share. We kick off the season with comedy and the amazing Flawless dance company; then to celebrate the re-opening of our theatre we have a season of inspiring drama and dance with performances like Nye & Jennie and Nyrsus to celebrate the NHS and the pulse-racing MK Ultra dance. Our groundbreaking Theatre for Change series returns with three thought-provoking performances about refugees, migration and colonialism, with talks alongside, including an exciting adaptation of Conrad’s Heart of Darkness. Alongside this we have an exciting and thought provoking programme of free exhibitions on display in our galleries. Come and join us for Andrew Logan’s infamous Jewellery Show Extravaganza to mark the opening of his solo exhibition, inspired by Comme des Garcons catwalk shows, and you can even volunteer to be a model! Andrew’s exhibition, The Wonderful World of Reflections is a fantastical jewelled treasure trove full of mirrored sculptures, stagedesign, original costumes and memorabilia from his Alternative Miss World. For photography lovers we have exhibitions exploring the landscape - Mike Perry’s major new solo show Land/Sea has a hard-hitting message about the land and marine environments of Wales; artist
Tim Rudman portrays Icelandic seascapes in An Uneasy Calm and our Instagram exhibition Ffoton displays a new hashtag #portrait cymru encouraging photographers to share their creative portraits from around Wales. There’s our ever popular Abertoir Wales Horror Festival and some great music gigs including some of the giants of music from Wales - Meic Stevens, Geraint Jarman and Catrin Finch. There’s much, much more including amazing contemporary dance, family shows, new writing events, as well as our unique community arts programme with something for everybody, not forgetting a Tiger who comes to tea. We finish off the year with our popular preChristmas show, this year a magical version of the well-loved Railway Children. We look forward to seeing you this autumn! PAUL R JONES: FRONTIER TERRITORY 17 November – 26 January With a focus on Anglo-Welsh identity at the border between Wales and England this exhibition questions how art practice can challenge, visualise and destabilise the discourses around territory, identity and language, teasing out alternative spaces in which new modes of the political and the social can be proposed, combined or contrasted. ANDREW LOGAN: THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF REFLECTIONS Andrew Logan belongs to a unique school of English eccentrics. Considered one of Britain’s principal sculptural artists, his work challenges convention, mixes media and plays with artistic values. Born in Oxford in 1945, Logan qualified in architecture in the 1960s. His work crosses the fields of sculpture, jewellery, stage-design & public art, embodying artistic fantasy in an unprecedented way.
The catch, selenium and thiourea toned silver gelatine.
Logan’s infamous Jewellery Show Extravaganza to mark the opening of his solo exhibition, inspired by Comme des Garcons catwalk shows, and you can even volunteer to be a model! The Andrew Logan Museum of Sculpture is a wonderland, a fantastical jewelled treasure trove in rural Berriew and home to a glittering selection of Logan’s signature works: jewellery, original costumes, memorabilia from his Alternative Miss World and much, much more.
The Picturemakers / Y Llunwyr summer exhibition this year has been designed to fit in with the Welsh ‘Year of the Sea’ theme at Aberystwyth Arts centre. We are a collective of 12 visual artists living in mid Wales and not all of us live beside the sea! Each of us has brought our individual interests, techniques and environments to this vast subject. From coastal landscapes of West Wales and further away, paintings of seas placing us at the centre of storms, quiet and busy harbour moments, intricate patterns found at the edge of the sea, drawings specifically depicting snippets of Aberystwyth life, ‘seas’ of grass in Rhayader, or still life images of fish fresh from the deep, to paintings of ‘our’ refugee families enjoying the seaside … we have them all! The theme concentrated our minds & unifies
this exhibition, despite us being a group eclectic in our styles and approaches. We hope visitors will enjoy the show! Further information about our group and illustrations of our work is to be found on www.thepicturemakers.co.uk

The Great Art Quest is a UKwide arts project designed by Children & the Arts to introduce schoolchildren to their local gallery. The works exhibited are a result of their engagement with visual art and storytelling at the Arts Centre The following schools worked with artist, Louise Chennell and storyteller, Euros Lewis: Ysgol Penllwyn, Capel Bangor, Ysgol Penrhyn-coch, Ysgol Craig yr Wylfa, Borth,Ysgol Myfenydd, Llanrhystud.

CREATIVE LEARNING Weekly Classes We are excited to share our Creative Learning programme with you for the coming term. We think there’s ‘something for everyone’ – from clay modelling to youth theatre, animation to Bollywood dance. We have a thriving Dance School, Stage School and Youth Theatre, as well as regular visual arts classes for adults and children. We also deliver Community Projects, such as APT - a training and participation project for residents of Penparcau, the Great Art Quest – working with local schools and artists, and Gwanwyn – a weekly class for people aged 50+, developing their creativity and sense of wellbeing. We manage Criw Celf Ceredigion – an arts education programme for young people aged 12-18 who are identified as being ‘More Able and Talented’ in the visual arts. The creative learning department are a small team of 3, working with a team of over 40 talented artists and tutors and delivering over 7,000 lessons every year. We generate over 50% of the overall participatory activities amongst the Arts Council of Wales funded venues. Our participants are all ages, from babies taking part in our popular Clwb 123 to a gentleman aged 94 who shared stories from his past as part of the Gwanwyn Club. Many of our participants study for exams in LAMDA, RAD, ISTD, along with our new venture as an Arts Award centre, enabling people aged 5-25 to gain a nationally recognised qualification in a variety of artforms. We’re confident you’ll find the cost of classes very reasonable, classes start from as little as £4.50 a session! Plus we offer an ‘Early Bird’ price for most of our classes! Take some time just for you, or bring a friend and share the fun! It is often possible to join a class after the start date, just drop us a line to enquire. Learn a new skill, develop a craft or become proficient in your preferred artform – all in a friendly, supportive environment, with excellent facilities that are hard to find elsewhere in Mid-Wales. We look forward to welcoming you to Aberystwyth Arts Centre!

Damian Gorman – writer in residence Northern Irish poet and playwright Damian Gorman has been described as “Ireland’s best-kept secret”. His work has garnered many awards over the past 25 years, from a Better Ireland Award to an MBE; a Golden Harp to a BAFTA. His verse documentary for BBC 2 - Devices of Detachment - was hailed in the national press as “a television masterpiece”, and Considerations, his recent series of online poems, was described by Neil Astley as “powerful, humane, moving - everything that video poetry should be”. But he says that, “for me - just for me - writing on its own isn’t enough”. And, as well as his own writing, he has worked for many years as an encourager of writing in other people and communities, especially in areas of conflict. This work has been recognised by, among others, the Commission for Racial Equality. He is also working on a large-scale community writing project here in Aberystwyth.

REFUNDS AND EXCHANGES If for any reason you find you are unable to make a performance or screening you have booked seats for, your tickets can be returned up to two days in advance of a performance, and we will issue you with a full credit note. Alternatively we can exchange your tickets for a more suitable performance of the same show or film, or in the event of a full house we will do our best to re-sell your tickets for you at no additional charge (although this cannot be guaranteed). This does not apply to courses. CONCESSIONS Rates are shown in brackets throughout this brochure. The rate is available for: 60+ in full time retirement, under 16s, full time students, unemployed, and disabled people. Babies are welcome at events that have a child’s concession price as advertised. LATECOMERS In order to minimise disturbance to other customers and performers, latecomers may be asked to wait until a convenient moment before being allowed into an auditorium. No refund will be given for customers who miss parts of performances due to lateness. Please note - it is often not possible to admit latecomers to the studio at all once the performance is underway.
hynt Art and culture is for everyone. But if you have an impairment or a specific access requirement, often enjoying a visit to a theatre or an arts centre can be more complicated than just booking tickets and choosing what to wear. Hynt is a national scheme that works with theatres and arts centres across Wales to make things clear and consistent. Hynt cardholders are entitled to
a ticket free of charge for a personal assistant or carer at the Arts Centre and all the theatres and arts centres participating in the scheme. Visit www.hynt.co.uk or www.hynt.cym to find a range of information and guidance about the scheme. You can also find out whether you or the person you care for are eligible to join the scheme and complete an application form. ACCESS FOR DISABLED VISITORS If you would like to check on any access issues before you visit the Arts Centre please call 01970 623232 | artstaff@aber.ac.uk. Parking is reserved next to the main entrance approach for drivers with limited mobility. Two spaces are also available at the rear of the theatre, with level access into the main foyer. Wheelchair access is possible to all auditoria and workshop spaces in the venue. Access at ground level to main foyer and box office, by lift up to the theatre foyer and by stair lift down to the lower level. Guide dogs and assistance dogs are welcome. Toilet facilities are accessible on all levels except the lower foyer. Hearing loops are installed in the Great Hall, Theatre and Cinema. Please note: No photography or video equipment is allowed in any performance.
