7.30pm, Friday 15 March A message from Ian McKellen: I’m celebrating my 80th birthday by touring a new solo show to theatres I know well and a few that I don’t. The show starts with Gandalf and will probably end with an invitation to act with me on stage. In-between there will be anecdotes and acting. I open at my local arts centre in January and end up by August in Orkney. Live theatre has always been thrilling to me, as an actor and in the audience. Growing up in Lancashire, I was grateful to those companies who toured beyond London and I’ve always enjoyed repaying that debt by touring up and down the country myself, with the RSC, the National Theatre, Prospect Theatre, the Actors’ Company, as well as with commercial productions. My childhood holidays were usually in North Wales and in the South, I’ve often appeared in Cardiff and Swansea. This will be my first visit to Aberystwyth. Better late than never! Profits go to the Arts Centre’s programme of theatre for young children and families. See you there, I hope! 16

Shepherd Geth Roberts (Llion Williams) might be getting on in years, but he still lives alone, high in the Elan Valley. A born storyteller, he’s spent his whole life working his wild and windswept farm. But now Geth faces his greatest challenge: his sight is failing and if he can’t see, then he can’t work the farm. Peter Cox’s one-man show, performed in English, is a heartwarming tribute to hillfarming communities across Wales.
By Ludwig van Beethoven. New Welsh version by Mererid Hopwood. OPRA Cymru celebrates the ten years since its inaugural concert with a new Welsh-language version of Beethoven’s only opera Fidelio. This is the inspiring story of the bravery of a woman who rescues her husband from political execution. Beethoven’s music is testament to his core beliefs in freedom, fidelity and love, and includes the famous ‘Prisoner’s Chorus.’ The opera is told through the words of Mererid Hopwood, the first woman to win the Bard’s Chair at Wales’ National Eisteddfod. This production of Fidelio follows OPRA Cymru’s award-winning première production of Mererid Hopwood’s and Gareth Glyn’s Wythnos yng Nghymu Fydd.

SONG FOR WALES
‘Gold, from antiquity through to present day, is the iconic symbol of wealth’. The theme of this exhibition – Rivers of Gold– may immediately conjure up images of the fabulous gold artifacts of Pharaonic Egypt and Mesoamerica, and other ancient civilizations. However, what is seldom appreciated is the huge human and environmental cost associated with the prospecting, extraction and processing of gold. Organised in conjunction with Aberystwyth Printmakers, La Trobe University, Lincoln Center for Water and Planetary Health, and University of Lincoln, Judy Macklin has curated an international exhibition and exchange between Australia, New Zealand and Wales. Artists have been invited to reflect on these and related issues, which explore the ‘Rivers of Gold’ theme over a range of time and space scales from antiquity through to the 21st century and beyond.

Indefinity is a work developed over the last year by artist Linda Jane James that expresses her feelings about the overwhelming accumulation of materials and waste and the endless, complex and layered consequences of the human need to be productive, to grow and expand. Stuff is rescued from a state of lying-aroundness – material that is leftover, surplus to requirements, unpredictable and unquantifiable, of dubious quality, not yet buried, burned or recycled. These tangible reminders of excess and inefficiency, redundancy, the mismatch between supply and demand, transformed into a work of immense scale and indefinable beauty.

Justine has her own language of clay. Balanced between functional and sculptural, her ceramic practice is rich and original. With a profound understanding of her materials and a honed visual aesthetic, Justine’s vessels are resolved. It is such a pleasure to have this solo show by Justine as the opening exhibition in the second series of The Language of Clay. It expands the dialogue presented through the first series and celebrates singular expertise. Ceri Jones, Exhibition Curator. The Language of Clay is a series of national touring exhibitions organised by Mission Gallery in collaboration with Ruthin Craft Centre, funded by ACW. Please check the Arts Centre diary or see www. ceramics-aberystwyth.com for notifications of talks and events. http://www.ceramics-aberystwyth.com
THE EYE There will be a rolling program of short films, animations and photographs in our mini viewing room.

We are excited to share our Creative Learning programme with you for the coming term. We think there’s ‘something for everyone’ – from clay modelling to youth theatre, animation to Bollywood dance. We have a thriving Dance School, Stage School and Youth Theatre, as well as regular visual arts classes for adults and children. We also deliver Community Projects, such as APT - a training and participation project for residents of Penparcau, and the Gwanwyn festival – an annual festival for people aged 50+, developing their creativity and sense of wellbeing. We are a small team of 3, working with a team of over 40 talented artists and tutors and delivering over 7,000 lessons every year. Our participants are all ages, from babies taking part in our popular Clwb 123 to a gentleman aged 94 who shared stories from his past as part of Gwanwyn. Many of our participants study for exams in LAMDA, RAD, ISTD, along with our new venture as an Arts Award centre, enabling people aged 5-25 to gain a nationally recognised qualification in a variety of artforms. We’re confident you’ll find the cost of classes very reasonable, classes start from as little as £4.50 a session! Plus we offer an ‘Early Bird’ price for most of our classes. Take some time just for you, or bring a friend and share the fun! Learn a new skill, develop a craft or become proficient in your preferred artform – all in a friendly, supportive environment, with excellent facilities that are hard to find elsewhere in Mid-Wales. We look forward to welcoming you to Aberystwyth Arts Centre! Spring Term classes will start back from the week beginning 7th January but it’s possible to join a class after the start date, just drop us a line to enquire. Start dates for each class can be found in the Creative Learning Courses brochure. Damian Gorman – writer in residence Northern Irish poet and playwright Damian Gorman has been described as “Ireland’s best-kept secret”. His work has garnered many awards over the past 25 years, from a Better Ireland Award to an MBE; a Golden Harp to a BAFTA. His verse documentary for BBC 2 - Devices of Detachment - was hailed in the national press as “a television masterpiece”, and Considerations, his recent series of online poems, was described by Neil Astley as “powerful, humane, moving - everything that video poetry should be”. But he says that, “for me - just for me - writing on its own isn’t enough”. And, as well as his own writing, he has worked for many years as an encourager of writing in other people and communities, especially in areas of conflict. This work has been recognised by, among others, the Commission for Racial Equality. He is also working on a large-scale community writing project here in Aberystwyth.
The Arts Centre’s Creu Cymru dance buddies are Gwyn Emberton, Eddie Ladd and Sean Tuan John.

REFUNDS AND EXCHANGES If for any reason you find you are unable to make a performance or screening you have booked seats for, your tickets can be returned up to two days in advance of a performance, and we will issue you with a full credit note. Alternatively we can exchange your tickets for a more suitable performance of the same show or film, or in the event of a full house we will do our best to re-sell your tickets for you at no additional charge (although this cannot be guaranteed). This does not apply to courses. CONCESSIONS Rates are shown in brackets throughout this brochure. The rate is available for: 60+ in full time retirement, under 16s, full time students, unemployed, and disabled people. Babies are welcome at events that have a child’s concession price as advertised. LATECOMERS In order to minimise disturbance to other customers and performers, latecomers may be asked to wait until a convenient moment before being allowed into an auditorium. No refund will be given for customers who miss parts of performances due to lateness. Please note - it is often not possible to admit latecomers to the studio at all once the performance is underway.
hynt Art and culture is for everyone. But if you have an impairment or a specific access requirement, often enjoying a visit to a theatre or an arts centre can be more complicated than just booking tickets and choosing what to wear. Hynt is a national scheme that works with theatres and arts centres across Wales to make things clear and consistent. Hynt cardholders are entitled to
a ticket free of charge for a personal assistant or carer at the Arts Centre and all the theatres and arts centres participating in the scheme. Visit www.hynt.co.uk or www.hynt.cym to find a range of information and guidance about the scheme. You can also find out whether you or the person you care for are eligible to join the scheme and complete an application form. ACCESS FOR DISABLED VISITORS If you would like to check on any access issues before you visit the Arts Centre please call 01970 623232 | artstaff@aber.ac.uk. Parking is reserved next to the main entrance approach for drivers with limited mobility. Two spaces are also available at the rear of the theatre, with level access into the main foyer. Wheelchair access is possible to all auditoria and workshop spaces in the venue. Access at ground level to main foyer and box office, by lift up to the theatre foyer and by stair lift down to the lower level. Guide dogs and assistance dogs are welcome. Toilet facilities are accessible on all levels except the lower foyer. Hearing loops are installed in the Great Hall, Theatre and Cinema. Please note: No photography or video equipment is allowed in any performance.
