WOW Presents: The Other Side of Hope

(Aki Kaurismäki, Finland 2017, 100mins subtitled) Beautifully made, perfectly judged in every way, Kaurismäki’s wonderfully droll humour is perfectly suited to this sweet story of a Syrian refugee taken in by the good people of Helsinki. Both hysterical and heartbreaking, this charming, humane comedy is enough to give you hope! “The warmest, most life-enhancing film I’ve seen this year.” David Gillam, WOW Film Festival Director

In This Corner of the World

Glyndebourne Live: Hamlet

(Sunao Katabuchi, Japan 2016, 130mins, subtitled) An award-winning animation following a young woman growing up in pre-war Japan. Living in a port town just over from Hiroshima, her idyllic family life as a budding artist is gradually eroded by the onset of war. Tinged with sadness and nostalgia, the beautiful hand-drawn imagery creates a powerful and deeply moving film.

This brand new opera receives its world premiere during Glyndebourne 2017. 220mins.

Dispossession: The Great Social Housing Swindle

(Paul Sng, UK 2017, 82mins) A shocking exposé revealing the catastrophic failures and deception behind the social housing crisis in Britain. Exploring how the state’s collaboration with the private sector makes properties that are unaffordable, this is the story of people fighting for their communities, of people who know the difference between a house and a home, and who believe that housing is a human right, not an expensive luxury.

14th July

Der Mude Tod

(Fritz Lang, Germany 1921, 98mins, silent with musical score) Fritz Lang (Metropolis) deftly defies cinematic conventions in this remastered re-release. A young woman confronts the personification of Death in an effort to save the life of her fiancé. Death weaves three romantic tragedies and challenges her to prevent the death of the lovers in at least one of the episodes. Rich in expressionist imagery, even Hitchcock and Buñuel cited it as a direct influence on their work.

3D & 2D (Kyle Balda, Pierre Coffin, AD, USA 2017, 96mins) Gru and his Minions are back as they team up with his long-lost brother Dru to steal back a diamond taken by master criminal and 1980s throwback, Balthazar Bratt. Relaxed Screening 29th July 12pm.
