You’ve had nine months to wrap your head around the fact that your actions – what you eat, how much sleep you get, and so on – affect someone else. Tell us a bit about your family. I’m married to a lovely Italian named Gianluca and have two boys, Giovanni and Matteo. We’ve been a bit of a gypsy family—beginning in Mexico, then relocating to the Midwest, then to the Arizona desert, and most recently Southern California. We’re thinking we’re going to stay. Your advice to first time moms? Clear your schedules! I thought—admittedly with both Pregnancies—that the baby would come, I’d be super productive, and able to continue working in some capacity. I didn’t ask for help and I should have. If loved ones offer, say yes! Favorite thing about newborns? Snuggling, naps, watching my little one change every day. Something I wish I did is take a picture of my baby every day for the first year. My sister is currently doing this and it is so awesome to watch her little one, Willow, grow through photos. And what an amazing gift to give your child down the road!

I don’t buy everything organic, but I pay attention to the Environmental Working Group’s Dirty Dozen list of foods with the highest pesticide residues. We also try to purchase most of our produce through a local CSA or farmer’s market. I don’t mind if these farms aren’t certified organic, but I like to be able to look a farmer in the eye while bouncing my precious offspring on my hip and ask, “what are the spraying practices on your farm?”

1 Cleaning products…as a baby gift?
