Letter from the Editor Setting goals - as individuals and an association.... This issue marks 0the beginning of my third year as editor of The Boer Goat. I cannot tell you how honored I am to continue serving you, the membership. Not an issue goes by without thinking of how the association has entrusted me with a magazine that brings information about the Boer goat industry to all corners of the United States. We all embrace the idea that our businesses, each and collectively, serve a purpose in our industry and our world that goes beyond dollars and cents. That purpose is to be a responsible and sustainable enterprise that seeks to progress. One of the ways we progress is by setting goals. It is this time of the year when we look back at our previous season's winnings and losses and/or sales and reflect on how to better our genetics for next year. Whether you put your goals on a napkin, notebook paper or computer, these goals help motivate each of us to better our program and ourselves. In addition to our individual goals, we also are each passionately interested in the nitty-gritty of what makes our association work. This time of year is not much different from our individual farms goals. The new board of directors has set goals for the new year. Now remember, just like our senators and representatives argue over how BEST to help our nation, our elected directors may also have different opinions. It is our responsibility as members to make our own thoughts known. Every member has access to this printed magazine. On page 2 of each issue is the contact information for your director. Be sure you let them know your thoughts on controversial issues. Also, make sure you sign up for electronic communications. These days, it is quicker to send out an email to solicit feedback. The current board has already reached out to each of us to gain feedback in an effort to better the organization. Don't miss these opportunities. Lastly, sign up for a national committee if want to make a greater impact. These committees are only as strong as those members who sign up to serve on them. Good luck setting and attaining each of your goals!
Karla Blackstock
Below is the newly elected Board of Directors for 2017-2018. The board, along with their contact information, is located on page 3 of the magazine in each issue. Please be sure you contact your director with any concersn that you have as they are elected to work you.

Letter from the President Hello fellow ABGA members, I cannot say enough on how humbled I feel while sitting here writing this message as your newly elected President. First of all, I’d like to thank our outgoing directors for their service to the organization; JR Patterson, Lee Dana, Joe Airoso, Janis Wesson, Brad Mackey, Tracy Diefenbach and Cindy Westfall. I would also like to welcome the newly elected and appointed directors; Kenny Elwood, Kathy Daves Carr, Jesse Cornelius, Josh Stephans, Denise Crabtree, Jeremy Church and Clark Huinker. Thank you to everyone on the board of directors for believing in me and electing me. Since our national show was just completed less than 2 months ago, I would like to say Congratulations to all of this year’s winners!! I would also like to thank all of the sponsors and vendors that helped make it a success. I would be amiss if I didn’t thank the staff, superintendents, judges, exhibitors and volunteers for being a part of the 2017 national show. With the number of entries and animals exhibited in both the junior and open shows up this year, we enjoyed a decrease in the amount spent on the expense side. I also want to personally thank everyone who donated and bid on the JABGA auctions. They were one of the highest fund raising events for the JABGA in the past several years. We, as a board, are very optimistic about change and looking forward to the future of the organization. Currently, we are working on redesigning and expanding the junior program to offer more leadership and educational experiences for our youth. This will help give our youth more opportunities to learn and grow within our organization. The board voted with a unanimous decision to expand the breed registry to include percentages on bucks and allow registration of their progeny. The board also approved completing transfers online therefore reducing the time needed to transfer an animal. We continue to seek ideas from our members. We are looking for additional avenues to benefit more members. Please contact your director and bring information forward so we can continue to grow the organization. We value all of our members and look forward to positive suggestions to move forward in our in industry. I am looking forward to an exciting year of serving the ABGA and helping our members!! Message The way our organization is designed, change is inevitable. We replace a third of our board of directors annually. This year promises to be no different than many in the past. If I had to guess, I suspect we will end the year going two steps forward and one step back. But, we will still keep chugging forward. Change used to bother me a lot. I won’t lie, and from all I have read, it applies to the majority of you. But change is good more times than not. I am so old I can still remember party line rotary phones. Even though I have been known to break out a few choice adjectives about this fancy oversized IPhone, it is better in a lot of ways than the one before it. Yet, like a lot of choices we are forced to make, there are still plenty of people out there that would be quick to point out that we have had it better or were better off somewhere in the past. It is hard to get a room full of people all on the same page. and experience has taught me that it is not always good when they do all agree. To be honest, I have come to like a little variation. I have debated the following subject where national show judges or three show weekend judges and variation are concerned. The debate usually starts with somebody telling me that we need three judges who are all just alike, who can get along and work well together. Then I usually counter and say, “so if we are going to get three judges who are all likeminded and who get along well with each other, then why don’t you just save the ABGA a little money and only hire one as they are all going to pick the same type of goats anyway”. I might follow this up with another argument that goes a little like this: If it were your money being made or lost based on the outcome of your judge selection, which would probably get the most exhibitors to your show or money back in your pocket? Would it be in your best interest if all three judges leaned a little wether, all three favored a little color, all three picked South African style, or if all three selected them large frame and futuristic? My thinking for all of you is that I have named off one or two sets where you realize your show string just does not work. Now back to my point or solution. Depending where you fall in this debate, I feel for the best results - at least as far as putting the largest number of exhibitor’s in the barn - is when you select a panel of three judges who all have a uniquely different approach or prospective where selection comes into play. I feel most seasoned exhibitors cut their losses when
from the CEO ...
they know it is over before they pull out of the driveway. To maximize the opportunity for a show's success, all exhibitors need to feel they are in the game before they will commit to coming to test their luck. In my opinion, the old adage still applies with show judges, “variety is the spice of life” especially if it is my money bet on the final outcome as a show host. I am sure some of you believe that all judges should be exactly alike if they are following a Breed Standard. This is simply not reality in our breed or any other that I have ever observed. If this were the case we would not have many shows given very little would change from week to week. It is my belief, at this point, that many goats would become difficult to sell unless they were of course of the chosen elite. The Breed Standard, as it was described to me years ago, is open and flexible to interpretation allowing us to make improvements from within. Not only has the ABGA made changes over the years, but our counterparts in South Africa have made changes as well. It is only natural for us to try to improve. Let me say that the new 2017 Board of Directors is not afraid of change even when it comes to changing a rule that could affect member flexibility, member retention, and the potential for increasing registrations. They are making revisions to our percentage registration rules, opening the books to allow more animals to reap the rewards of an ABGA pedigree. A predictable outcome was for those opposed to take to social media and begin another good round of the 'sky is falling' posts, allowing bucks sales and type could suffer. Will the sky fall? I seriously doubt this either way. You only need to go to our ABGA website and click on ABOUT ABGA on the homepage to find a video of the 20 years of National Shows. You can view a past National Champion Percentage Buck picture. Did the world end then? No! Will we continue to move forward regardless of this change? My prediction, given the two steps forward one step back choices we all make in life, our association will still generate a positive forward result. The wheels on the train will continue to go round and round.

Meet Your 2017Junior National Show Judges
Eddie Holland
To be selected to judge the Junior ABGA National Show is one of the ultimate highlights in my judging carrier. I have been fortunate and honored to judge at many ABGA National shows. I just can’t say enough about how gratifying it has been to work with great judges at these shows. I have enjoyed evaluating the best Boer goats in the United States and have seen the outstanding progress made by the breeders over the years. It is a wonderful feeling seeing the elation on the faces of the exhibitors when their animal is slapped on the rump and handshake is made. As many times as I have had the honor, it still gives me a wonderful feeling of pride. In my opinion, the ABGA National shows offer the opportunity to showcase the best Boer goats in the United States every year. You have exhibitors coming from all over the country with some of them traveling several days to get to the show depending on location. I would like to say how much of an honor it was to be selected to Judge the Junior National ABGA show this year. I really enjoyed judging as a team with Ron Dilly and Jesse Kimmel. We enjoyed being able to discuss all of the goats and pointing out differences. We did not see everything the same, and that is ok. I think being able to work as a team and talking to one another all the way to champion drive was great. As a team, we enjoyed working our way from the tenth to the first place entry and shaking hands with winner. Thanks again for the honor!
Ron Dilley
I enjoy spending family time with my wife Debbie, three grown daughters, and five grandchildren. I am employed with a reproduction firm in Stillwater Ok, where I specialize in Sales and Marketing for our
Goat Program. Debbie and I started our journey in the goat industry in 2001, and what an experience it has been! I consider it an honor to have been chosen to judge multiple National Shows. Folks tell me I’m considered one of the Senior Judges in our association, and I’ll take that as a compliment too! I really enjoy consistently finding quality animals to use, that are both structurally sound, and appealing to the eye. When I continue to use that type of animal in as many shows as I judge each year, I guess in my own way, I’m helping to shape an Industry! It’s hard to describe the feeling of choosing a National Champion. It’s like sharing the excitement and emotion with the winner but it seems to get even better in the Junior Show. Knowing that these young people have worked months, and in some cases years, to have an opportunity to stand in a Grand Drive, words just can’t describe how honored we are to be able to reward their hard work! The National Show is the premier event of the ABGA, and it’s our opportunity to shine! I hope everyone understands just how important it is to our association! To the JABGA members, thanks again for selecting us to judge your show.
Jesse Kimmel
I am married to my wife, Khara, and I have two children, Riley (5) and Braxton (3). I am a Agricultural Teacher and FFA advisor. I raise both Show pigs and Boer goats. I have been fortunate enough to judge from coast to coast. It is an incredible honor to judge a national show. Being selected by the members is awesome. The biggest honor was to judge with two men that I look up to and have great respect for. Ron and Eddie along with the junior members made it an experience I will never forget. Being part of this event with junior member was a great experience. Seeing
their faces whether it was just coming into the ring or receiving an award was worth it. You know these members have poured their hearts and souls into it. When these young kids get a huge smile on their face or break down into tears when they receive an award you know how much work went into it. The biggest honor you can have as a judge is that reaction. You know you have just impacted their lives. Having a national show is a major event that I think is necessary for our organization to keep growing. This show allows for junior members to come from all over the country and compete. This event is also where you can make friendships from all over the country that will last a life time. I encourage all junior members to attend the national show and have an awesome experience. The junior board does a great job at having other events at the show to keep everyone involved and to have fun. The junior members are our future. We need to encourage them and help them the best we can so that our industry can grow. It is important to look at the junior members as equals. These young individuals work hard and put in a lot of effort to get their animals ready. I would like to do is thank everyone the helped put the national show on. The ABGA staff did an amazing job. The junior board made it an experience I will never forget. The young members who showed was such an amazing group. The three men in the ring, Robert Washington, Kurt Henry, and Jesse Cornelius deserve the biggest thank you I can give. These three men busted their butts for this show to run so smooth. The last people I want to thank is Ron Dilley and Eddie Holland for being the best team I could ever hope to judge with. It is not very often when you get a chance to judge with two men you look up to.

A Few Quotes from your 2017 National Show Judges... Coni Ross | Thomas Redden | Jason Brashear
Thomas Redden
So many individuals and families have spent years of hard work and planned breedings to produce the animals exhibited in Grand Island. Just the effort to raise, feed and show any one year is staggering. To be chosen to judge the National Show is indeed an honor and great responsibility. To have the privilege of helping choose the bucks and does that will influence Boer Goats for many years was very humbling! The desire to choose the right animals was so rewarding for me and hopefully the Boer Goat industry. The association and people directly responsible for the show were great to
work with and any problem that arose during the show was quickly dealt with. I would love the opportunity again, but feel so fortunate to have been able to serve at this capacity!
Jason Brashear
It was pleasure sorting through some of the best goats in the country. I enjoyed seeing the exhibitors faces. Handing a banner to a national champion or reserve champion is something I'll never forget. Each year, I hope to continue making an impact on the industry and in the lives of our future breeders.
One of the ways I keep active in our industry is through my job as the Foodways Director at Hindman Settlement School. Thank you ABGA members for your confidence in me. It was an honor to be selected as a national judge twice in a row - the first year as part of the junior's judging team and the second as an open show judge.
Coni Ross
I enjoyed this ABGA National Show, The goats were great, and well presented. I enjoyed the brief time I had with exhibitors.

Meat Goat Testing Program The program is administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, in cooperation with Penn State’s Department of Dairy and Animal Science, the Pennsylvania Sheep and Wool Grower’s Association, and state breed associations. The objectives of the program are to: • Provide a genetically sound testing program that would allow both large and small goat producers to participate. • Promote performance testing of goats in Pennsylvania and acquaint producers with its overall value. • Provide a common test for evaluating rate of gain, structural soundness, muscularity, condition, and estimated carcass merit. • Provide an opportunity for purebred breeders and commercial producers to purchase performance-tested bucks, which have been evaluated in part under similar, unbiased, environmental conditions. The testing facility houses up to 200 Bucks in 5 pens for a 70-day feeding period. Rations are self fed after a warm-up period and contain approximately 1000 lbs. Oats, 500 lbs Corn, 250 lbs. Linseed meal, 190 lbs. Soybean meal, 50 lbs. Wheat middlings, and 26 lbs. Minerals and vitamins.
Care and Management of Pennsylvania Buck Testing Participating bucks complete an official 70-day performance test at the Livestock Evaluation Center on July 4. Prior to the start of the tests, buck are allowed a 14-day adjustment period. During this 2-week period, bucks are dewormed, introduced to the LEC ration and prepared to begin the test. Throughout the performance tests, bucks are self-fed a pelleted 16% protein feed. All animals received a mix grass/legume hay.

The Boer Goat - 25
Optimal Body Condition for Reproduction Whether breeders are balancing a feed ration in the showbarn or in the pasture, goat producers need to understand body score conditioning. Body condition is critical to every producers kidding season. Boer does that are too fat or too thin can experience reproduction complications. Overweight or underweight does may experience low twinning rates, low weaning weights or have general reproduction failure. To ensure that does are maintain the proper weight, breeders can use the body conditioning scoring method. Socring the body condition of Boer goats is simple and consistent. The biggest challenge is that producers learning to score goats, should handle the goats over several key places, including the ribs, backbone and sides of the spine. Body conditon scores are illustrated in the chart below, on a score of 1 to 5, where 1 is very, very thin and 5 is obese. Optimal breeding score is good condition (3). Score

The following definitions are reprinted from Penn State Extension. More information is available online at http://extension.psu.edu/courses/ meat-goat/reproduction/body-condition-scoring/term-definitions.
The spinous process refers to the individual vertebra in the spine. If you run your fingers down the goat's spine from the shoulders to the tail head and you feel sharp, distinct points you would use a BCS of 1 to describe the goat. If you run your fingers down the spine and feel lumps of smooth flesh you would use a BCS of 3. The loin eye edge or loin eye is the area you will feel if you place your thumbs on the goat's spine, while standing behind the goat. Curl your fingers down as if you were going
26 - The Boer Goat
to pick the goat up. You will now have cupped in your hand a shelf-like area. This area is the loin eye. Loin eye is measured in terms of depth (spine to ribs), length (hip bones to the last rib) and the width (from loin eye edge to opposite loin eye edge). The easiest way to learn how fat cover feels is to find a very thin animal and gently run your fingers from the spine down over the ribs while your fingers are together, but extended. You will be able to feel each rib very easily. Now find
a fat goat and do the same process. Now you will notice that you can not feel the individual ribs and that you may feel bumps of fat. The fatter the goat, the more lumpy the fat will feel. In an extremely obese goat you will encounter ridges of bunched fat as you run your hands down the ribs. There are targets you should shoot for during key times of the year such as breeding, kidding and lactation. There are targets you should shoot for during key times. Nannies should maintain a body condition score of 2 to 3 at the beginning of the breeding season, with a BCS of 3 being optimum. Pregnant does need to be watched closely to make sure they fall in the BCS 3 category throughout their pregnancy. Pregnant does should not be allowed to climb toward a BCS of 4 or higher since they risk toxemia or kidding difficulty. Does should never be allowed to slip below a BCS of 2. The same is true of the higher end of the scale. Does should not reach the BCS of 4 and should never reach a BCS of 5. Does with the high end scores usually don’t get bred, and if they do breed they tend to have difficulty kidding. When does kid make sure they do not drop from a 3 to a 2 or 1 too quickly. Feeding can be adjusted up or down by using the BCS. Be sure to make any feed adjustments gradually. The goat is a ruminant animal and sudden changes in the diet can greatly affect the rumen organisms.

USDA announces needs-assessment survey for its upcoming NAHMS Goat 2019 study FORT COLLINS, Colo., July, 2017— The USDA’s National Animal Health Monitoring System (NAHMS) is in the development stage of its upcoming Goat 2019 study. This study will provide important information about management practices used on U.S. goat operations and will take an in-depth look at the most pressing health issues facing the U.S. goat industry. NAHMS conducts needs-assessment surveys to determine the critical information gaps related to the industry of focus. NAHMS uses this information and information from other sources to help set study objectives, and the needs assessment questionnaire seeks stakeholder opinions about what topics should be included in the objectives.

Suggested Tips When Purchasing a New Buck
(since 1982)
We have the LOWEST PRICE sheep and goat equipment on the market and it’s HOT DIPPED GALVANIZED.
1. Bucks are well developed and
properly cared for and should adequately cover females. 2. Young bucks should not be expected to breed more than 25 females the first year. As they are still growing, give them grain and grass or quality hay. DO NOT OVERWORK YOUNG BUCKS. 3. After placing a young buck with females, allow several weeks for the animal to adjust and begin servicing the herd. 4. Unfamiliar bucks will fight when first introduced. If bucks must be housed in the same pen, ensure it is small enough that the animals can’t gain enough momentum to hurt each other. Otherwise, placement in adjacent pens for several days before group housing should relieve this problem. 5. Ensure the success of your kid crop by periodically checking to see if does are settling. 6. Keep the new buck around the barn or in a small lot for at least a week after arrival. This will allow him to become accustomed to his new surroundings.
