As the weather becomes more chilly and crisp, people begin to prepare to fight off common winter-time skin woes. Lotions and creams alone are not always able to prevent dry, dull and irritated skin though. You can preserve healthy, glowing skin and even enhance it with a few proven and all-natural skincare methods. Don’t lose your glow this winter; keep your skin supple and soft with these effective beauty tips.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is a holy-grail product for many all-natural enthusiasts. It truly is a unique gift from nature. Coconut oil deeply hydrates skin and hair. It also adds a lustrous shine and healthy glow. The trick to avoiding a slick, oily feeling is to mist your skin with water before applying

coconut oil. Use a small, dimesized amount and rub it into your skin using short, circular motions. This application method also helps the oil penetrate the skin more effectively.

For many years, the FDA has recommended that Americans should drink a Holidays minimum of Happy eight full ounces of water every day. This one size fits all approach will not guarantee that you are adequately hydrated though. A more reliable way to determine how much water you really need is to calculate your body weight, divide it in half, than convert it into ounces. For example, a 120 pound woman would need at least 60 ounces or about eight cups of water each day. Physically active individuals should drink their full body weight in ounces. This approach can ensure that you meet your daily water quota, and reap the countless health benefits that follow.

Shea Butter

Shea butter has been a staple in beauty and skincare routines since ancient times. It is one of the oldest and most effective moisturizers available. The reason behind its hydrating power is its extremely high vitamin A and vitamin F content. Both of these nutrients contribute to younger, healthier, and softer skin. Shea butter is ideal for sensitive skin and can even be used to condition dry hair.

Olive Oil

extremely effective moisturizer. First popularized by ancient Greeks, it is ideal for severely dry and cracked skin. Olive oil also produces a dewy glow. The best way to apply it is right after a warm bath or shower, while your skin is still damp. Use a small amount of olive oil and gently rub it into your skin using circular motions.

Honey

Raw honey is used for many different skincare purposes. It is a soothing ingredient in facial masks, natural exfoliator, and deep moisturizer for problem areas on the body. Try applying a small amount directly onto dry hands, feet, elbows, or cheeks. Allow it to sit on your skin for 10 minutes, then rinse it off and pat dry with a towel. For deeper penetration, apply it to hands or feet and cover with gloves or socks while you sleep. Rinse it off in the morning, and be prepared to be amazed! All of these all-natural products are excellent choices for maintaining healthy, glowing skin during the winter-time. Try them out to find which one works best for you. Besides using all-natural products, you should also maintain a healthy diet for optimal skin health. +

SUGAR COOKIES

If you’ve been searching for the best sugar cookie recipe to bake for your holiday gifts and parties then your search is over. This sugar cookie recipe produces the fluffiest, tastiest and easiest to decorate cookies you’ve ever made. You will never go back to your old recipe again. This recipe has been passed down in our family since the early 1900’s. Back then no woman worth her salt used measuring cups or teaspoons to make a recipe, she did a pinch of this and a handful of that. This recipe has been translated down through the years into cups and teaspoons for those of us who need to be exact but it has kept its charm and flavor. It works great for any holiday cookie that is either decorated or plain. You could even make plain, round cookies any time of year to enjoy their great taste.

This recipe makes Happyapproximately Holidays 4-6 dozen cookies depending upon the size of the cookie cutters. There are a few tricks so be sure to follow the recipe and directions carefully so you can enjoy the best sugar cookies ever.

Recipe Preheat oven to 350° F. Use the middle rack of your oven for baking. 1 cup shortening (Butter flavored shortening tastes best. Don’t use real butter or margarine because it makes the cookies too crispy.) 2 cups sugar (Cream together until smooth) 3 eggs ¼ cup milk (The trick to not overdoing on liquid is to break the 3 eggs into a measuring cup and then add milk until you reach the 1 cup line.) 2 Tsp. Vanilla Now, beat the milk/egg/vanilla mixture into the sugar and shortening mixture with an electric hand blender or a whisk. Make sure to beat until smooth. This step is how you get a fluffier cookie. Next, using a medium to large hand sifter mix together: 2 cups flour (You will use 4-6 cups flour in all but do not add all at once.) 2 Tsp. baking powder 2/3 Tsp. baking soda

1 Tsp. salt ¾ Tsp. nutmeg Now you can sift dry ingredients into the liquid ingredients. Sifting is very important; it mixes the ingredients while making the flour light and fluffy. Hand-mix the flour into the batter until it is well-blended. Next you will add 1 sifted cup of flour at a time until the batter turns to dough. As it becomes too stiff to stir you can begin to knead in the flour with your hands. Do not use more flour than necessary. Too much flour will dry out your cookies. If you are not sure, only add ¼ to ½ cup flour at a time until the dough feels firm but moist. It should be firm enough to roll out without sticking but moist enough so your dough doesn’t crack when rolling. Once the dough is ready it is best to use it right away. Don’t store it for a few hours or put it in the refrigerator. This will dry out the dough and the cookies will not turn out as nice. Spread a thin layer of flour out onto the surface you will be rolling your dough on. Take a handful of dough and roll it into a ball with your hands then flatten it onto the floured surface. Spread a thin layer of flour on the top of the dough and then flip it and begin to roll out the dough in short, smooth movements. You want to slowly roll the dough in Not That Old And Loving It!

all directions until it is a little less than ¼ inch thick. Don’t roll the dough too thin or you will have flat cookies. It’s better to have it too thick than too thin. Now you are ready to cut the dough. Try dipping the cookie cutters in a bowl of sugar instead of flour when you are cutting the cookies out. Sugar will keep the cutters from sticking while adding a little flavor. Place cookies on a cookie sheet. If you are not using a non-stick cookie sheet you should use a light touch of non-stick spray on the sheet. Butter or shortening is too heavy and can cause the cookies to burn.

are leaving them plain then you can add a light sprinkle of sugar on top. Bake cookies for approximately 10-12 minutes. This will differ depending upon the size of the cut. The finished cookie should look puffy and dry without having brown edges. Cool cookies on a wire rack and then they are ready to decorate or enjoy. It may take you a try or two to get the feel for the perfect dough but once you do you will always have the best sugar cookies to share with friends and family at Christmas or anytime. +

Getting Ready for the Holidays: Tips for Decorating Your Home Decking the halls is fun, easy to do and doesn’t have to make a huge dent in your wallet. Don’t just feast on the holiday turkey. Decorations will bring a touch of holiday cheer to your home, and will give you the opportunity to feast all your senses too.

Feast Your Nose Part of the magic of the holidays is how the house always smells good. The scent of freshlybaked gingerbread cookies or the refreshing note of pine from a Christmas tree always gets people in the mood for the holidays. Mark Crames at the Demeter Fragrance Library in New York agrees. “Nothing impacts our brain as fast or as hard as scents,” he claims, which is why “the smell of that fresh-cut Christmas tree is more important than the tree itself.” If you don’t have the time to fill your house with wonderful cooking smells the traditional way, these days you can get candles in all

20 Simply55+

December 2014

sorts of different scents, including “Christmas Splendor,” with classic holiday notes like apples, oak, balsam, fir, cinnamon, cloves and pine. Make your house smell great with some candles and perhaps some fresh wreaths and pine boughs or a whole tree and your decorating battle will be half won.

Feast Your Eyes Switch off the lights and go for the warm, welcoming glow of a fire and some candles instead. There is no better holiday treat than curling up by a roaring fire with a mug of hot cider, especially if it’s gently snowing outside. Of course no Christmas is complete without a tree. Enjoy the sight of the softly twinkling lights, your favorite glittering ornaments and Not That Old And Loving It!

the slowly growing pile of presents underneath as you sip a glass of mulled wine. The experts recommend getting a real tree rather than a fake for both environmental and health reasons. The best option is getting a live tree that can be replanted at the end of the holiday season. For best results, and to minimize the sweeping, delay getting a tree for as long as possible.

To further add cheerful, festive touches to your home, tie a red and green ribbon around a jar of scented candles for a practical yet decorative item. Adorn your front door with a wreath, and add some red and green pillows, perhaps even a plaid throw over your couch. Put up some red stockings and your home will be almost ready for the holidays. If red and green isn’t your style, try adding a bowl or two of silver ornaments around your home. Show your appreciation for your Christmas cards by putting a string of them on top of your mantelpiece.

Feast Your Ears Carols are one of the best ways to bring some holiday cheer to your house. A selection of your favorites on your ipod or CD player will brighten up your house and your mood. Include some singalong carols for the children, some jazzy numbers for a touch of sophistication, and some old favorites by artistes like Louis Armstrong and Nat King Cole to get you in the mood for Christmas. + Not That Old And Loving It!

Ways to Get a Jump on Weight Loss between Christmas and New Years

The holiday season is like a minefield for anyone trying to eat healthy or keep her weight down. As if huge family dinners loaded with everyone’s favorite carbs and fatty fare aren’t enough, it seems everywhere you go someone is pushing cookies, cakes and candies on you. This is probably why losing weight or eating healthier is one of the most common resolutions people make for the new year— but why wait until January? You’ll feel so much better if you get a jump start. Leave the Leftovers This year, when your family offers you a doggie bag of the Christmas ham and sweet potato pie, respectfully decline. You’ve had your fun; you don’t need them anymore. Don’t bring home any leftovers that might encourage you to keep the holiday feast going. Get Rid of Temptation If you’re the one doing the cooking, make sure your guests walk out with all the leftovers, or bring them to work the next day

to offer co-workers a free lunch. Make December 26th your annual “Clean out the Fridge and Pantry” day. Dump the candy canes, fruit cakes and leftover eggnog. Likewise, empty that candy dish and clean out your treat stash drawer at the office. Refill the Fridge and Pantry Take a shopping trip and fill your kitchen with fresh, light, healthy foods for the week. You don’t have to count your calories just yet— but take advantage of that after-holiday phase when you’re burnt out on heavy, elaborate meals and overly-sweet snacks. Spend the week enjoying fresher, simpler options. Plan to eat lots of salads and low-fat vegetable soups all week. Reduce your meat intake to small portions of lean cuts that are broiled or baked. Avoid processed meats that contain a lot of salts Not That Old And Loving It!

and fillers. Use carbs sparingly, and opt for complex carbs, like oatmeal, brown rice and whole wheat pasta. Sugar free gelatin, light popcorn and fresh fruits make excellent snacking options. Turn on the Tap As soon as Christmas is over, help your palate recover from overload— make water your beverage of choice. Aside from helping you wean off the holiday goodies and keeping you full between meals, water helps alleviate bloating. During the holidays, people don’t hold back on things that make food taste better, like salt. Excess salt causes water retention and is probably responsible for a good portion of your holiday weight gain. Drink a lot of water to keep hydrated and flush out your system. and New Year’s Eve. Chances are you put off some exercise during the holiday season, giving priority to everything from writing out Christmas cards to baking cookies. Don’t flop on the sofa the minute the flurry of holiday activities cease. Keep up the momentum, but channel the energy in a new direction: exercise. Plan an extra session or two at the gym or go on a 20 minute power walk at lunch time each day. If you feel you’ve over-exerted and over-stressed yourself all month, don’t go to the opposite extreme and become lazy the week after Christmas. Get some soothing yoga or tai chi DVDs to keep you moving but help you regain inner calm. If you’re serious about your commitment to getting in better shape, don’t wait a week after Christmas. Enjoy your holiday, then get right to starting better habits. When you’ve had a small taste of success by New Year’s Day, you’ll be more motivated than ever to stick with it. + December 2014

Happy Holidays Happy Holidaysv. Guardianship Power of Attorney By Kim Boyer

Many people want to know the difference between a Durable General Power of Attorney and a Guardianship.

What is a Power of Attorney?

A power of attorney is a legal document where one person (the principal) authorizes another (the agent) to act on his or her behalf. There are powers of attorney for assets which allow your agent to make decisions regarding your property and there are powers of attorney for health care which allow your agent to make decisions regarding your health care needs. Your power of attorney can be broad in scope, giving your agent the ability to make any and all financial and personal decisions for you (a General Power of Attorney) or you can limit your agent’s authority by specifying the types of decisions you would like your agent to make on your behalf (a Limited Power of Attorney). You have a choice whether you would like your agent to have the ability to make decisions both now and if you become incapacitated (a Durable Power of Attorney) or your agent can be limited to make decisions only when you become incapacitated (a Springing Power of Attorney). You must have capacity to execute a power of attorney. If you lack capacity to execute a power of attorney, then a guardianship may be necessary.

What is a Guardianship?

Guardianship is a legal relationship where a court gives a person (the guardian) the

26 Simply55+

December 2014

power to make personal or financial decisions for another (the ward). A family member, public or professional guardian initiates the proceedings by filing a petition in the proper court. A guardianship over the person gives the guardian the power to make personal decisions for the Ward. A guardianship over the estate gives the guardian the power to make financial decisions for the ward. Often the court appoints the same person as guardian of the person and guardian of the estate. Appropriate documentation is necessary to establish the need for a guardianship, and the guardian is required to report to the court on an annual basis.

The Differences

A power of attorney is a private way to decide who will have the legal authority to carry out your wishes if you can no longer speak or act for yourself. It is less costly than a guardianship, which is a public proceeding and the person appointed as your guardian may not be the person you would choose. A power of attorney is limited in its authority to the scope of the document. Financial institutions sometimes refuse to honor powers of attorney for assets, due in part to their fraudulent use by agents. In contrast, a guardian has broad legal authority which is recognized by medical providers and financial institutions. A guardian is subject to court supervision for protection. Contact an attorney to appropriately address your situation. +

Essential Foods For A Hanukkah Party Happy Holidays

For many families, Hanukkah parties are a well-loved holiday Happy Holidays tradition. They provide a chance to get together with friends and family, and to celebrate this festive season. However, no Hanukkah party is complete without the appropriate foods. Try these traditional and not-sotraditional foods for your next Hanukkah party. Potato Latkes: Perhaps one of the most popular Hanukkah foods is the potato latke. These crisp and traditional favorites are almost never missing from a holiday feast. Made from batter prepared with grated potatoes and onions, latkes are fried in oil and make an irresistible addition to any Hanukkah meal. Symbolically, latkes are a reminder of the oil pitcher in the Hanukkah story, and so have a deeper meaning to those who celebrate this holiday.

Sufganiyot: This traditional dish is a doughnut made from flour, sugar, cinnamon, yeast, margarine, and egg yolk. Once fried, the doughnut is filled with jelly and topped with powdered sugar, creating a sufganiyot. This particularly delicious food is hard to resist for any and all guests at a Hanukkah party.

made with kugel, fresh onions, and spinach. It is fairly economical to make, so you won’t have to spend a lot to fill your guests’ bellies. Spinach noodle kugel is well-loved by many, and makes a wonderful addition to any holiday gathering. Loukoumades: These fried honey puffs are delicious enough to make year-round, but are typically reserved for Hanukkah. They are excellent dipped in honey or sugar, and should be eaten as soon as they are made. They do not keep well and certainly should be consumed within 48 hours. Dough Balls: The Feast of Lights wouldn’t be complete without these Hanukkah snacks. These little things are made by simmering a combination of apple juice, margarine, and flour. This automatically clumps together to form a ball. The half-formed dough is then combined with beaten eggs and spooned into hot oil. The dough fluffs up into brown puff balls which taste great with honey and chopped nuts. They can also be served with shredded coconut and hot marmalade, chocolate sauce, cinnamon and sugar, or whatever else you can think of. Hanukkah Brisket: This traditional dish is cooked very slowly and is made from onions, garlic, red wine Not That Old And Loving It!

vinegar, ketchup, brown sugar, and beef. The gravy for the brisket is made with seasonings and water. Herb Baked Salmon: Usually cooked with cheese, this salmon dish is traditional at Hanukkah. It can take a while to make but it’s well worth the effort. Marshmallow Dreidels: Children will especially enjoy these creative little treats. Use icing to glue a chocolate kiss to the bottom of a marshmallow, then push a toothpick or licorice stick into the marshmallow from the top. The dreidels can be iced with letters or Hanukkah symbols, if you like. Hanukkah Cookies: Most cookie dough can be adapted to fit into a Hanukkah party quite easily. They can then be fashioned into any appropriate shape you desire, such as a menorah. Not That Old And Loving It!

A note on kosher foods: For those interested in preparing a truly traditional Hanukkah celebration, kosher foods are a necessity. The good news is, with the proper ingredients and appropriate preparation, any of the foods above can be kosher. But you’ll have to pay attention to packaging. Beware of shopping at bulk food stores as the packages have all been opened and the product is likely no longer kosher. There are many other foods that can be served at Hanukkah. Some of these are soups, such as cabbage soup, mushroom soup, farfelpotato dairy soup, chicken soup with Hanukkah noodles, or chicken soup with matzo balls. Others are traditional dairy dishes. Whether your party is a fancy one or an intimate gathering of family, there are many different foods that can make your Hanukkah festivities more memorable for all. + December 2014

activities impossible, find exciting Happy Holidays and entertaining things to do inside your house. You may want to play board games with family Happy Holidays members, take up indoor hobbies like knitting or playing a new instrument, or just spend some time reading enthralling new fiction books. By combining any of these activities with a warm fire or a candlelit living room, you can find yourself beginning to relish the winter weather instead of resenting it.

6) Consider A Light Box

If your low mood relates to seasonal affective disorder (or SAD), you could find yourself feeling much better if you choose to buy a light box. These devices can simulate sunlight, and some sufferers find that light boxes transform their lives in the winter months.

7) Be Smart About Your Finances

A large source of depression in January and February relates to the excessive spending that typically characterizes the festive season. If you have found that your savings have been dwindling and you’re really beginning to worry about your money situation, try to make a clear budget and stick to it each month. If you struggle to do so, you can ensure that a portion of your money is moved to a savings account on a monthly basis, preventing you from spending any more than you have allocated for your budget. You may also want to consider ending your use of credit

cards, especially if you tend to be impulsive about purchases.

8) Plan Indoor Trips

Even though it is winter, you can still plan to go out with your partner and make dates with friends or relatives; you just have to think of destinations that are warm and covered. Good ideas included a dinner date followed by a trip to the cinema, a trip to an indoor aquarium or a day at a spa,

9) Nurture Your Relationships

Unfortunately, January is a peak time for divorce lawyers. Stressful family gatherings and high expectations around the time of the festive season can build resentments and lead to couples having arguments early in the new year. As a result, it is good to make time for your partner. Organize dates, make sure you have sincere conversations, and try to be kind to each other in times of stress.

10) Acknowledge Your Problems

and work towards solutions If the above tips do not seem to be helping you to stay cheerful during the months of January and February, perhaps something more significant is causing you to feel down. You may want to try making a list of all of the things are bothering you, whether they are large or small. After that, you can think about potential solutions, and develop an action plan for each issue. This act in itself can help to relieve some of your burdens. + Not That Old And Loving It!

Making SMART New Year’s Resolutions When preparing for the New Year, people often make New Year’s resolutions: plans for improving themselves or their quality of life. There are many common resolutions, like saving money, becoming more organized, losing weight, and quitting smoking. However, a few months into the year, many people have given up on their resolutions. By making a SMART New Year’s resolution, you stand the chance of making a resolution that you will actually keep and be able to look back on proudly this time next year. SMART Resolutions: Failure-Proof Your New Year’s Resolution A lot of the reason why New Year’s resolutions fail is because people don’t realize that making a New Year’s resolution is identical to making a goal. You cannot make a goal without a plan of action

to achieve that goal and expect to achieve it, nor can you expect to accomplish it instantaneously. Many people simply say, “I want to lose weight”, but do not outline the ways in which they are going to achieve that goal. A common method for making goals is to make SMART goals, a mnemonic which stands for five different attributes of a successful goal. The five principles of SMART goals are: • Specific - a goal that is specific, not general, with a method of attaining it • Measurable - a goal whose progress can be measured and monitored • Achievable - a goal which can actually be attained by the goal maker, with steps taken to ensure success • Realistic - a goal that you Continued on pg. 36 Not That Old And Loving It!

is achievable and realistic; losing 100 pounds in three months is not. When you give yourself realistic goals, you are far less likely to lose your drive.

Taking Your Resolution from Lofty to SMART: An Example We will apply the five SMART principles to a commonly made goal: weight loss. Let’s say that you want to lose weight in 2011. Instead of making a general resolution such as “I want to lose weight in 2011”, make your weigh loss goal SMART:

The final SMART component to this goal is that it is tangible. It is not enough to have a goal that is just specific, measurable, achievable, and realistic. In order for you to feel as if you have achieved your goals, you must be able to see, feel, and sense the results of your goal. In our example, you will be able to see on June 30, 2011 whether or not you have lost the 25 pounds of body fat that you had resolved to lose for the New Year. Having a tangible New Year’s resolution versus a generic “I will lose weight” resolution makes it far more likely that you will achieve the goal.

“I will lose 25 pounds of body fat by June 30, 2011 by exercising three times a week.”

When you state your goal this way, you provide yourself with a specific, measurable goal (losing 25 pounds of body fat). You create a defined boundary in which to work, where you are able to monitor your progress. Saying that you just want to lose weight can mean that the five pounds of water weight you lose from sweating can be considered “losing weight”, when it probably isn’t actually what you had in mind when you made your new year’s resolution. This new goal is also achievable and realistic. By setting goals that are both achievable and realistic, you create a real opportunity for yourself to succeed. SMART resolutions have many advantages over generic resolutions. They give you a means to develop a plan of action and to form a real resolve to achieve your goal, rather than lofty aspirations. By turning your New Year’s resolution into a SMART resolution and realizing it as a goal, you can put yourself much closer to experiencing a happy new year. +

Secrets To Avoiding Happy Holidays Family Holiday Happy Holidays Gathering Disasters The holiday season is once again upon us. It is time to bring the family together under one roof to celebrate. It is at this time of the year you may begin to stress out because you know the certain doom that is going to come your way: unattended children knocking the fruit punch bowl over onto the brand new carpet as they scurry around your home, one portion of the meal coming out burnt because nobody was watching it, and you can almost guarantee there will be at least one argument that breaks out over something that happened 20 years ago! With all of the stress-inducing drama that seems to plague the holiday season, it is no wonder why divorce rates sky-rocket just after this time of year. Instead of suffering an anxiety attack, pulling your hair out, or even ditching your family all together for a nice tropical vacation, rise to the challenge and think outside of the box this year. Over the years, hosts and hostesses like yourself have developed an arsenal of tools that will make the gathering a peaceful time for all.

Minimize the Booze

Family gatherings and booze do not mix. When the alcohol starts flowing, people tend to lose their filter and actually say what they really mean. This can result in pent-up anger and resentment rearing its ugly head. There is also something about free alcoholinfused drinks that make people believe they can handle much more than they actually can. Holiday cocktails are blended with a recipe for disasters.

38 Simply55+

December 2014

Instead of using the ‘open bar, drink as you please’ method of serving alcohol, control the situation by offering a cocktail with dinner and dessert. You can show off your culinary skills by providing alcohol that compliments the meal course and your guests will wake up the next morning remembering just whose house they visited the previous night.

Set Up A Fun Center For the Kids

Holidays put kids into overdrive. They are excited to see their cousins, eat lots of sweets, and open presents. What little person would not be enchanted by the magic of the holiday season? Even the mellowest-mannered child can bounce off the walls like a spring-loaded rubber ball! The key to keeping them from running around the house aimlessly for hours on end is to intrigue their creative young minds with some fun projects. Take a trip to your local arts and crafts store and load up on supplies for a fun-filled night of imagination. You can find a wide assortment of ornaments, wood cut-outs, and foam shapes so they can make decorations for the Christmas tree. Older kids can be easily entertained with board games, movies, art supplies, puzzles, or even video games ... hey, it is the holidays, let them indulge!

accommodation, inviting people Happy Holidays to stay at your home will often result in some form of unneeded bickering. One person snores too Happy Holidays loudly, another spends too much time in the bathroom; this can all get out of hand quickly. Our homes are our castles; a place of refuge after a long busy day. Try to keep your home as a place you can retreat to after spending all day with your extended family. If you are riddled with guilt by not offering your family free room and board, you can always research deals and packages offered by local hotels in your area. Many hotel chains will offer block room rates if you have a certain number of reservations, and your loved ones will appreciate that you saved them some money.

Halt Not-So-Good Trips Down Memory Lane

40 Simply55+

In every closet there lies a skeleton and most of the time you do everything in your power to avoid going near it. It is possible that when family members socialize for any length of time, things will be said and not-sogood memories will surface. Your first reaction might be to retreat to a dark corner as fast as you possibly can, but this calls for bravery. In the event that you find yourself in an uncomfortable place in a conversation, calmly and politely state that you do not want to talk about the topic. You do not need to provide an explanation as to why and your family will December 2014

generally respect your wishes.

“The Perfect Family”

There is at least one at every gathering - the person who will spend the entire night convincing you that they have the perfect family. Their kids are all straight “A” students and they just purchased the newest hybrid car. For some reason, they need you to believe their life could not get any better. What this actually is is a storm waiting to happen. Personalities could start to collide and an argument is sure to follow. The secret to keeping this storm from coming is to divert the energy. You could quickly spill an entire bowl of gravy on the floor, thus requiring everyone to stop the conversation to help clean up the mess, or you could change the subject and get everyone to start talking about a more joyful topic, such as “Hey, what did you all think of the newest rendition of the Nutcracker?” When you are armed with a wellplotted game plan, you can turn a family gathering disaster into a joyous occasion for all. Like a good game of chess, you must anticipate your opponent’s next move and this should be easy; it’s your family. By stopping potential disasters, drama, and emotionallydriven arguments in their tracks, your next holiday gathering will be a peaceful one for all. + Not That Old And Loving It!

The Sahara Hotel Has Memories That Will Live Forever by Mike Henle

Probably the greatest memories stemmed from the personalities who performed at the Sahara ranging from comedian Don Rickles to the singing group The Kim Sisters and singer Teresa Brewer. Add Sonny and Cher into the mix along with Buddy Hackett and Johnny Carson and it's easy to see why the Sahara was the class of its field more than three decades ago. Truth be known, one of Rickles' funniest moments came when the young Kim Sisters were in the audience at the old Casbar Lounge in the Sahara.

The Sahara Hotel has become SLS Las Vegas, but no one will ever be able to erase the history of the hotel casino.

I know since I was employed as everything from a busboy to a warehouseman and finally a bell hop from 1969-74 when the money was good and the times were beyond belief in many ways.

“None of us knew English,” recalled Sue Kim many years later. “So when Don started ranting and raving at us, we all left. We didn't know what to think at the time.” The employees of the Sahara loved Rickles, who before leaving for the Riviera spoke freely with the staff and always left behind tokens of his appreciation upon completing his engagement. He would hit the door of the Sahara teasing an old bell captain from Louisiana named Les Garrity and patrons and employees always welcomed him back when he returned.

It was in the early years that the Sahara was owned by the legendary Del Webb, who had real estate holdings including the Sahara Tahoe, the old Thunderbird and Mint hotels along with ownership of the New York Yankees, to name a few. A pleasant and humble man whose demeanor made him a friend to everyone from the front desk clerk to the maid and the valet parking attendant, Webb represented an era in Las Vegas when the corporate element was virtually non-existent and the times were fun. And the Sahara was a fun place, as evidenced by the unending memories within the grounds of the 1,000room layout.

In the same breath, Carson was a highly-private individual who while well-liked, didn't mix often with the help. Word had it that while Carson was one of the best entertainers ever at the Sahara, he shied from the public when offstage and cherished his quiet time when not performing. Sonny Bono, whose career was skyrocketing during the 1970s at the Sahara thanks in part to the glowing performances of his wife, Cher, created a memory that will forever live in Sahara history while strolling through the warehouse.

In his day, Bono was a fitness freak - so much so that he took every pound seriously. That said, he stripped to his bikini underwear in the warehouse and jumped on the Toledo scales, which just happened to be situated smack-dab in front of the office windows and in full view of the women in the office.

fund raiser every year started at the Sahara before moving on. In the case of the Tail Hookers - which were former members of Navy air craft carrier crews - there was not a bigger party on earth each year when the partying was intense and furniture was thrown out balcony windows and into the Sahara swimming pool before moving to the Hilton where they gained national notoriety for their antics. And in its day, the Sahara was host to the PGA Sahara Invitational when the likes of Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Chi Chi Rodriguez headed of field of folks who were not only good golfers but good tippers at the same time. During a time when the current PGA tournament is struggling for spectators, the Sahara Invitational drew thousands each year. The Sahara has been upgraded with a new look and name that has brought it up to today's standards. However, I'll take the old days of the Sahara when an element of surprise combined with the class of Del Webb created the class of the Las Vegas Strip.

When confronted about his near-naked attire while standing in front of the eyes-wide-open female employees of the Sahara purchasing department, the brazen Bono said in part that he could not have cared less about the view he was offering. When it came to Hackett, there could not have been a more despised individual in the hotel than him. In fact, during a break between shows one evening, several waiters and waitresses fumed about his comments to them during a previous show, and threatened to dump all of their trays and dishes in unison during his show. In fact, Hackett even reportedly shot out the headlights of a vehicle he claimed was parking in his reserved parking space. Then, there were the countless conventions that the Sahara attracted over the years ranging from morticians to the Tail Hookers to gun collectors and the rest. In addition, Jerry Lewis' Muscular Dystrophy telethon

Spinach

Happy Holidays Pineapple

Spinach is actually one of the most healthiest foods in the world. Just one cup of cooked spinach can help flush toxins out of your colon which will help decrease any constipation you may be experiencing. In addition, spinach can also help lower your risk of certain cancers and improve bone health. Raw spinach makes a wonderful replacement in salads or you can even blend some spinach into a fruit smoothie. Broccoli Broccoli is rich in iron, calcium, and fiber. Once you add broccoli to your diet a few times per week, you’ll notice a reduction in hay fever and other allergies. Broccoli is also a powerful ally in helping to reduce your risk of prostate cancer. Try adding sliced broccoli to your stir fry or salad as an easy way to sneak it into your diet. Garlic Garlic can help you lead a longer and healthier life in so many ways. Full of enzymes that fight cancer, garlic is a potent superfood that can easily be added to your daily diet. In addition to fighting cancer, garlic can also reduce sticky blood platelets that can lead to a heart attack. You can try adding garlic slices to baked chicken, fish, and beef dishes. Sauteed mushrooms and garlic are also an awesome side dish for any entree.

If you’ve ever suffered a sports injury, you know how much swelling and inflammation can occur in the days following the accident. Pineapple is known for its abilities to reduce swelling, bruising, and inflammation due to injuries and accidents. In addition, pineapple can also reduce inflammation due to arthritis, sinusitis, and inflammatory bowel disease. If you are unfortunate enough to be suffering from asthma, pineapple may also provide you with much needed relief in order to breathe easier. Try adding pineapple to a fruit salad or mixed in a cup of yogurt. Tomatoes The famous red hue of this fruit comes from its high lycopene content. But did you know that lycopene is also responsible for reducing the risk of prostate cancer and heart disease? With the rates of prostate cancer on the rise, adding tomatoes to your diet can be an easy way to combat your risk of cancer. Tomatoes can easily be added to any salad, sandwich, or stir fry. Remember that fresh food is always best. Rather than purchasing high-sodium canned food, opt for organic produce and meats. Buying in season will not only save you money but will also ensure that you are getting the most nutrients from your food. Adding these tasty superfoods to your diet can go a long way in helping you lead a long and healthy life. +

Eight Strategies for Sticking to the Most Common

New Year’s Resolutions We all begin a new year with great enthusiasm for our resolutions, but it is easy to let our motivation fall by the wayside when life becomes busier or our resolve begins to falter. Here are some quick tips that will help you to stick to eight of the most common new year’s resolutions.

1) Losing Weight Or Improving Fitness

After the excessive indulgence that characterizes most holiday seasons, making a resolution to lose weight can be an excellent idea. However, most gyms report that the January rush begins to calm by February, indicating that many people give up their weight loss or fitness goals within just a few weeks. Seeking support seems to be the key to keeping this type of new year’s resolution. Specifically, find yourself a reliable gym buddy who will accompany you to do your workout in the grim winter months, and look into weight loss groups. You might also find it easier to stick to your goals if you make them highly specific.

50 Simply55+

December 2014

For example, instead of making a vague commitment to reach a healthy weight by the end of the year, set an exercise goal for each week (such as three intense cardio sessions).

2) Stopping Smoking Although there are dozens of good reasons to stop smoking (ranging from an increased life expectancy to a more youthful appearance), the pain of withdrawal can lead you to turn back to cigarettes fairly quickly. If you want to stick to your new year’s resolution to make cigarettes a thing of the past, look into smoking cessation aids like nicotine patches and prescription medications, try to keep yourself as busy as you possibly can, and think about writing a list of your motivations for stopping smoking (before placing it in a prominent place).

3) Doing Volunteer Work

If you´ve decided that you want to do more to help those in need this year, you may discover

that it is difficult to Holidays find the Happy time when you have other major commitments at work or home. If you realize that it isn’t realistic HappytoHolidays for you to commit being part of a particular organization, you might want to commit to doing five things to help other people on a weekly basis. You can change the activities depending on your availability; for example, you might have time to work at a soup kitchen for a while during a break from work, but at a hectic time of year you can focus on things like making food donations and giving money to favorite charities.

4) Eating Healthier Foods Even if you don’t need to lose weight, you may have made a new year’s resolution to eat healthier foods in order to boost your energy and wellbeing. The trick to sticking to your goal involves avoiding dramatic dietary changes that deprive you of all of your

favorite treats, as this will leave you feeling fed up fairly quickly. Instead, make lots of small swaps, such as eating an apple as an afternoon snack instead of a chocolate cookie, and having a side of brown rice instead of French fries.

5) Improving Your Financial Situation

The holiday season is expensive, so it is common to make a new year’s resolution that focuses on saving more money. The best way to approach this type of resolution is to budget very carefully, allocating a certain amount of money that you are willing to spend each month. If you find it difficult to do this, you can set up an automatic transfer of money to a savings account, leaving you with no option but to spend within your monthly budget. For some people, getting rid of credit cards will be vital as well, as this move makes

sure that youHappy can only spend Holidays money that you actually have.

6) Boosting Your Happy Holidays Happiness Levels

January and February are typically unhappy times of year due to poor weather, cold temperatures and empty wallets, so you may decide that you want to reduce your stress levels and promote more positive emotions. Try making a list of things that make you feel relaxed and happy, and vow to enjoy at least two of these activities every day. This idea works best if you add plenty of things that have a big impact on your happiness but don’t take up a lot of time (such as a phone call to a close friend or quality time spent with a pet).

7) Cutting Down Your Alcohol Consumption You can stick to this new year’s resolution by setting a strict limit of alcohol for each week, and by alternating alcoholic drinks with soft drinks when you go out to a bar or a restaurant. If you really struggle to stick to this resolution because drinking is a form of selfmedication for you, then you may want to think about approaching a counselor to discuss your worries

about relying on booze.

8) Improving Relationships With Family Members If you have let your family relationships become strained over time or simply worry that you don’t spend enough time with your relatives, this could be the year that things change. Once again, the key is to find

the time when you have plenty of other commitments in your life. Thankfully, small changes can make a huge difference to the quality of relationships. For example, if you can find time for a fifteen minute Skype call with an overseas relative every weekend then you will always know their latest news, and if you can find a way to see a sibling at least once a month then this can help you to feel closer. +

Five Tips To Lose and Maintain Weight During the Holidays The holiday season is fast approaching, and with it comes the endless choices of calorieloaded food choices. This is a difficult time for people trying to lose weight, but it can also prove to be a test for people trying to maintain their present weight. People will be faced with large, traditional meals as well as numerous parties with all manner of tempting foods. However, there is no reason a person cannot partake in these events and still maintain their weight or continue on a diet. In fact, they can even enjoy some of the tasty options available during this delicious time of year. They just need to follow five steps to be able to enjoy these events without the guilt.

One of the first things people need to do during this time is to understand why this time of year can derail their diet efforts. The holidays can be an emotional time of year. They can provoke good or bad emotions in people. Furthermore, overeating is often linked to emotions. Therefore, emotional overeating can occur during this period. This can come from emotions that are aroused from reliving family traditions to feeling sad and alone during this time of the year. So, persons wanting to lose or maintain weight need to be aware of their emotions when in these situations and pay attention to what they eat. They will need to ask themselves if they are Continued on pg. 64

Happy Holidays Continued from pg. 60

eating out of necessity or out of a need to satisfy an emotional need. Another good strategy during this time of the year is to have an eating plan or strategy before entering social situations. A plan can include items like eating small portions, finding the fruits and vegetables first, limiting sweets or anything else that helps them set limits before an event. Once in the situations, they can use their plan as a guideline to make healthy and responsible food choices. It can also help them politely deal with people that force food on them. They will be able to decline the excess food from these individuals and use good health as an excuse to say no. Another good strategy to lose or maintain weight during the holidays is to increase exercise during this time period. Just increasing exercise by 10 minutes a day can help people get through this time of the year without gaining weight. In order to effectively burn the excess calories gained during the Holidays it would be best to spend the extra exercise time doing cardio activities like biking, running or swimming.

A great way to curb your appetite at holiday events is to eat more fruits and vegetables through the day. This allows an individual to stock up during the day on healthy foods and snacks. Then when they are in an environment with less healthy food choices they will not be as hungry or tempted. They can still indulge, but they will not be inclined to do so in excess because they have filled up on the healthier fruits and vegetables prior to any holiday events. A final tip for maintaining weight during the holidays is to drink plenty of water.  It has been shown that individuals who drink water during the day will consume fewer calories. Also, water will help fill an individual’s stomach. This, again, helps to fill up the stomach with healthier alternatives, and reduces the temptation to fill up on junk food and sweets. The holidays do not have to be a stressful time for people trying to lose or maintain weight. They do not have to hide out in their homes, and exclude themselves from social settings. By following some simple advice it is possible to enjoy friends and family during the Holidays without worrying about increasing the waistline. + Not That Old And Loving It!

Advanced Technology for Cataract Patients

Since 1994, the Wellish Vision Institute has been at the forefront of advanced cataract technology. As Nevada’s first laser vision surgeon, Dr. Wellish is a nationally recognized leader who uses the latest cataract surgery and laser vision correction technologies, combined with a passion to achieve your best possible vision. Our procedures typically take only minutes to complete. We

understand that today’s baby boomers don’t want to wear reading glasses or bifocals and they don’t want their eyes to “act their age.” That’s why our surgeons offer a widerange of premium lens implants that allow our patients undergoing cataract surgery to do most things most of the time without glasses, such as driving a car or reading a dinner menu.

Lens Implant Options

Standard Lens Implant: Reading glasses still required.

Premium Lens Implant: See near, far and everything is between.

Do You Have a Cataract? Cataracts are the leading cause of poor vision in adults. If you’re over the age of 55, have had changes in your vision or difficulty driving at night, you could have a cataract. To schedule a cataract screening or to learn more about premium lens implants, call the Wellish Vision Institute at 702-843-5859 today!
