These gentler shampoos are formulated with nourishing moisturizing ingredients and will help to repair the damage done by harsher products. Chemical free shampoos also aid in repairing damage caused by environmental factors such as sun exposure, pollution, and damage from styling products and heat styling. Shea butter, coconut oil, argan oil, and honey are a few of the ingredients often found in natural formulas. Reading product labels is the best way to make sure chemicals aren’t hiding in shampoos that claim to be natural. Those looking for a homemade option will find an abundance of information about alternatives and recipes on natural hair care websites and forums. Coconut milk, aloe juice, and castile soap make frequent appearances in homemade shampoo recipes. Some people even abandon shampoo altogether in favor of the “no poo” method, which often uses baking soda to clean hair and apple cider vinegar to seal the hair follicle.

Skin is the largest organ in the body and it functions as an important line of defense against a host of invaders. Environmental irritants like smoke, pollution, and allergens are kept at bay by your skin. In this protective effort, skin also absorbs much of what it is exposed to, so keeping it healthy is essential. Many common skin and face creams, both high-end and generic varieties, contain several well-known irritants that have been implicated in conditions like eczema, allergic Not That Old And Loving It!
rashes, and possible endocrine disruption. Allergens and irritants like fragrance, lanolin, paraben, PEG, and alcohol are so ubiquitous in moisturizers and lotions that it seems nearly impossible to avoid them. Even lotions advertised as safe for sensitive skin often contain these ingredients. The EU has banned many of these ingredients, but manufacturers in the United States continue to use them. To reduce exposure to irritating chemicals, toxins, and preservatives, using a natural moisturizer is essential. Many of these alternatives boast naturally high antioxidant and beneficial fatty acid content - features that would demand a high price in other commercially available skin creams. Healthy, chemical and additive free alternatives are easy to find and are often far more effective in terms of their moisturizing and protective power. Natural oils can be used just like any other lotion on the face and body. Creams and lotions made from natural oils are available for purchase and customized homemade moisturizer is easy to make by melting and whipping oils together as desired. Popular and relatively inexpensive options include coconut oil, olive oil, grape seed oil, shea butter, beeswax and honey, and goat’s milk. Oils such as rose hip seed oil, which contains natural tretinoin (the active ingredient in Retin-A), jojoba oil, and argan oil are touted for their superior anti-aging, reparative, and moisturizing properties. Many of the most powerful oils are effective in small amounts, which is a positive when considering their higher price.

Be Careful with Your Social Security Number
Your Social Security number is the key to the kingdom for identity thieves, so you need to exercise caution when giving such personal information to a new medical provider. Many medical forms do indeed have a spot for your SSN, but some identity theft experts recommend providing your phone number instead. Medical offices typically ask for Social Security numbers so they can track patients down or initiate collections procedures

for unpaid bills. Turning over such detailed contact information can give the provider the same protection without putting your identity at risk. If the medical provider insists that they need your Social Security number, ask specific questions about how the information will be stored and what procedures are in place to protect it. Some medical providers safeguard sensitive information by storing it only on computers that are not connected to the Internet. This kind of sequestration can preserve the security of patient records and help reassure them that their personal information is safe.
Watch Out for Medical Scams
Patients know that medical care is expensive, and so do identity thieves. That is why some enterprising criminals set up “free” medical clinics and screening programs that are Continued on pg. 32 Not That Old And Loving It!

You probably have a secure place to store your tax returns, bank accounts and other sensitive financial documents, but do you have something similar for your medical records? Like tax forms, your medical records often include your Social Security number and date of birth, and that is all identity thieves need to make your life a nightmare. Leaving medical paperwork lying around is an open invitation to identity thieves, so put it away as quickly as possible. Check your pockets and purse for medical paperwork that could put your identity at risk and put those records away too. You may need to bring an appointment reminder or medication list with
you when you visit the doctor, but other medical paperwork should remain in a secure location at your home.
Be Cautious with Phone Calls and Emails
The workers at your doctor’s office may need to follow up with you, but the information they request should be medical in nature. Be wary of any phone calls requesting your Social Security number or other financial information, even if they purport to come from your medical provider. The same is true of emails. Watch out for phishing scams and bogus emails claiming to come from medical sources. If you correspond with your doctor or nurses by email, you should be providing only basic medical information, not sensitive personal data. Never send your Social Security number or other financial information through email; the medium is not secure enough for such transmission. Staying safe from identity theft is not easy. Our personal information is everywhere, and keeping track of its movement can be difficult. The best strategy is to limit how much personal information you give out, starting the next time you go to the doctor. +

dramatically. However, when buying perishable items, only buy what you can use. If you end up throwing it away, you’ll just be wasting your money. Take advantage of cash-back offers and point redemption programs. As long as you are going to make the purchase anyway, you may as well reap this benefit. Find a no-fee bank account. Those fees can add up, and you don’t want to pay them unnecessarily. Focus on paying off your smallest debt first, while paying the minimum on the rest. Logic would focus on the higher interest. But money management is not logical; it is emotional. And you need to experience some “wins” as encouragement. When you have paid off the first debt, add that payment amount to what you were already paying on the next highest. Continue this until every debt is paid, and you have eliminated all your interest charges. Use the library. It’s free, and you can even get music and movies there now. Happy Holidays
What Does It Really Happy HolidaysTake To Learn A Happy Holidays Musical Instrument You have decided that you finally want to learn a musical instrument. You are excited at the prospect of playing the tunes you love, but you are not sure where to start. Read on to find out exactly how to go about learning a new instrument and filling your musical potential.
1 - Look For A Quality Instrument
The most common approach to buying an instrument is to pay what you can comfortably afford. Buying the best instrument within your budget is a great start, and you will appreciate the quality further down the line. You want to keep your instrument for many years, so don’t compromise on quality. If you can’t afford a new instrument, there are many second-hand bargains available. Have a look at the adverts in your local newspaper or online; be careful, and always test an
instrument before you buy it. If you can take someone along who knows something about the type of instrument you are interested in, you are less likely to buy the wrong thing.
2 - Find A Teacher
The easiest way to set off on the right track is to find a teacher. Shop around and make sure you find someone with specific teaching qualifications. It’s not good enough for them to have performance qualifications, or, worse still, no music qualifications. A good teacher will offer a consultation lesson, and will have a proven track record of instrumental teaching. Don’t necessarily go for the cheapest teacher; this could prove to be a false economy, and the more experienced teachers in your area will tend to charge more for their services. Why Your Pooch Should be Eating Natural Dog Food Happy Holidays Dogs can be such a wonderful addition to any family, but as much as you think you may know about your pets there’s still a lot that you don’t know. It’s impossible to completely understand their state of health without regular checkups, however, in today’s economy not everyone can afford a vet visit for our favorite pooch on a regular basis. Dogs, like humans, need nutritious food as a foundation for good health. A healthy diet keeps a dog physically well, can improve his behavior and reduce the number of trips to the vet.
Happy Holidays
natural dog food devoid of fillers and / or additives will put an end to this discomfort.
Grains and other additives Happy Holidays are harsh on a dog’s digestive system. Dogs are carnivores by nature and their body functions off proteins and a small amount of complex carbohydrates (such as fruits and vegetables) and other nutrients derived from meats and bone. Homemade dog food doesn’t contain the cheap filler that can create digestive problems. It is made from wholesome ingredients that fit his natural diet. Certain behaviors such as canine coprophagia (feces eating), anxiety or hyperactive behavior can be prevented or reduced through diet. Dogs eat their own feces out of boredom or because they are seeking attention. But did you know that this behavior is also caused by deficiency of nutrients due to poor digestion or lack of digestive enzymes? These are issues that can be directly improved through proper diet. overall foul mood? This behavior can be greatly improved because Happyby Holidays mood is influenced diet. Foods rich in serotonin and B vitamins (such as turkey or pumpkin) are wonderful mood Happy Holidays enhancers. Serotonin, the “feel good hormone,” is wonderful at relieving depression or anxiety Happy Holidays as it promotes a feeling of calm and relaxation. Foods rich in tryptophan, such as turkey, signal the brain to make more serotonin which will increase sleepiness - great for dogs experiencing insomnia and for their owners whom they are keeping up! B vitamins nourish the nervous system, promote healthy digestion and keep the immune system strong. It makes sense that dogs receiving optimum nutrition (in addition to a clean and loving home) tend to be better adjusted than dogs deficient in key vitamins and minerals from an inadequate diet.
Balanced Nutrition is the Best Nutrition Now that you understand the value of providing quality nourishing food for your dog, you’ll need base for your recipes. It is important to provide a varied diet for your dog. Generally speaking, things that you should avoid at all times are dairy (except for plain yogurt), garlic,
onions, nuts, sugar, chocolate and raisins as these foods can be toxic to a dog’s system. Most sources suggest that you use recipes approved by vets as an imbalanced homemade diet can cause nutritional deficiencies, such as low calcium, which will have a negative impact on their bones. The foundation for healthy nutrition is quality hormone and antibiotic free meats and organ meats with small amounts of fresh veggies. Some people feed their dogs’ raw meat, others cook it – the choice is up to you. To minimize possible contamination from raw meat, you should buy meat from a clean, quality butcher or a supermarket such as Whole Foods. A balanced canine supplement with calcium and an Omega 3 rich oil (for a healthy, shiny coat). You may also want to consider making a bone broth. This is a wonderful traditional food that you and your dog can enjoy – it is rich in calcium and trace minerals. If you simply don’t have the time to prepare your dogs meals from scratch, you can buy grain free premium canned and dry dog food from trusted brands like Solid Gold and EVO. You can also add these premium foods to mix with your homemade meals as well. +

FEEDBACK LETTERS Willa, Thank you for reading Simply 55+. We strive to provide a quality magazine for our readers to enjoy. We will to continue to improve in 2015 and the years to come.

We received your magazine for the first time this week and when reading it last night, one of the first articles to catch my eye was the Great Las Vegas Bike Trails and Red Rock Scenic Loop. The number of errors made me shake my head in disbelief especially since Red Rock Canyon has been here for years. The loop is 13 miles, not 12 and takes at least 30 to DRIVE (the speed limit is at most 35). For most people, with the climbs it will take significantly longer to bike. The gate for the loop opens at 6am, but the closing time varies during the year and is now closed by 5pm. The visitor center at Red Rock Canyon (not County as stated in the article) is open from 8:304:40. ALL of the canyons are not sandstone cliffs. This was incredibly disappointing because the Red Rock Canyon information is so easy to get correct that it makes me wonder about the validity of any of the articles. Sincerely, Jan Barry Dear Jan, Thank you for your honesty and we at Simply 55+ hope to earn your loyalty with quality and accurate articles for you and all our readers to enjoy. Advanced Technology for Cataract Patients
Since 1994, the Wellish Vision Institute has been at the forefront of advanced cataract technology. As Nevada’s first laser vision surgeon, Dr. Wellish is a nationally recognized leader who uses the latest cataract surgery and laser vision correction technologies, combined with a passion to achieve your best possible vision. Our procedures typically take only minutes to complete. We
understand that today’s baby boomers don’t want to wear reading glasses or bifocals and they don’t want their eyes to “act their age.” That’s why our surgeons offer a widerange of premium lens implants that allow our patients undergoing cataract surgery to do most things most of the time without glasses, such as driving a car or reading a dinner menu.
Lens Implant Options
Standard Lens Implant: Reading glasses still required.
Premium Lens Implant: See near, far and everything is between.
Do You Have a Cataract? Cataracts are the leading cause of poor vision in adults. If you’re over the age of 55, have had changes in your vision or difficulty driving at night, you could have a cataract. To schedule a cataract screening or to learn more about premium lens implants, call the Wellish Vision Institute at 702-843-5859 today!
