From a Vegas Valley weather perspective, this is the calm before the storm. Historically speaking, we average 78 degrees during April with a mild 20% humidity. The pools open and there will be a few days when you consider going. Most likely you’ll stay on the deck and enjoy the sunshine. I’m guessing the Spring Breaker’s will jump into the water, after all, our weather is beautiful! Simply 55+ was one of the sponsors at a local health expo held at the Sun Coast Hotel & Casino on the 21st of last month and our 55+ residents were out in force. It was great to have an opportunity to meet, mingle and speak with our readership as well as members of AARP, The Cleveland Clinic and a host of others businesses that positively impact the lives of us baby boomers. Thank all of you for the kudos on our publication. We’ve come a million miles and we humbly realize we have a million more to go. All of you are our driving force. We are more than grateful to be part-of and for the opportunity to serve our great community. What is bothering you in the valley… what needs to be addressed? Let us know! April is a fantastic month to hike in Southern Nevada. The days Financial Pack and Ship are warm, but not scorching like they are during summer. Daylight Services saving is in effect allowing hikers UPS an extra hour of daylight. There’s no better place to hike in April than FEDEX Red Rock Canyon, a mere 20 miles US Postal west of the Las Auto VegasTravel Strip. Calendar Of Events
Hiking Tip of the Month The correct gear can make the difference between a good hike Remembering Nevada or a disastrous hike. Your shoes are the most important piece of hiking gear. Your feet and legs Happy Holidays carry you to the peak and back. Blisters, hotspots, or sore toes can turn a hike into a tortuous event. There are different types of boots for the diverse hiking areas. When hiking in Red Rock I recommend a lightweight hiking shoe. If you rock scramble in Red Rock Canyon,
approach shoes provide great traction on sandstone. Many hikers wear the Five-Ten approach shoes. A good pair of hiking socks is mandatory especially if you’re doing longer hikes. Hiking socks, which have padding under the ball of the foot and the heel, cushion the impact your feet and knees receive while hiking. My favorite sock is Darn Tough and they are made in the USA! Even the best hiking shoes and socks can cause blisters. Moleskin or Blister Buster prevents blisters if you apply them the second you feel a hot spot. They stop friction that creates blisters. Moleskin can be found at most supermarkets. Blister Buster can be found on the Internet. Hike of the Month Enough reading, let’s go hiking. Calico Tank is one of the most popular trails in Red Rock Canyon. Water in Calico Tank can vary from nothing to a depth of several feet and can even be frozen in the winter. Happy Holidays
Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, and Henderson have all made great strides in creating bike paths that allow you to ride free of cars and other potential hazards. In fact, Henderson has been awarded the bronze level as a Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of
American Cyclists. Here are some of my favorite trails around the valley: Pittman Wash Trail In my opinion, this 8.8 mile trail is one of the best laid out trails in the entire valley. This asphalt trail makes great use of an area that would otherwise be left vacant. It is also constructed in such a way as to avoid a steep climb no matter which way you travel. This is even more impressive when you realize the trail changes 264 feet in elevation from start to finish. As the cement portion of the Pittman Wash progresses, it eventually finds its way to a natural wash populated with all manner of birds and other wildlife, as well as plants, trees, and shrubs. This area is one of the most beautiful in the valley and is accessible with any type of bike. Advanced Technology for Cataract Patients
Since 1994, the Wellish Vision Institute has been at the forefront of advanced cataract technology. As Nevada’s first laser vision surgeon, Dr. Wellish is a nationally recognized leader who uses the latest cataract surgery and laser vision correction technologies, combined with a passion to achieve your best possible vision. Our procedures typically take only minutes to complete. We
understand that today’s baby boomers don’t want to wear reading glasses or bifocals and they don’t want their eyes to “act their age.” That’s why our surgeons offer a widerange of premium lens implants that allow our patients undergoing cataract surgery to do most things most of the time without glasses, such as driving a car or reading a dinner menu.
Lens Implant Options
Standard Lens Implant: Reading glasses still required.
Premium Lens Implant: See near, far and everything is between.
Do You Have a Cataract? Cataracts are the leading cause of poor vision in adults. If you’re over the age of 55, have had changes in your vision or difficulty driving at night, you could have a cataract. To schedule a cataract screening or to learn more about premium lens implants, call the Wellish Vision Institute at 702-843-5859 today!

Dogs Make Exercise an Adventure
Happy Holidays
If you are ever feeling tired or bored, your dog’s demeanour can take your mind off how difficult things are. If you are exercising with a dog, there is no need to limit yourself to short strolls around the park or hikes in the woods. An Evening With Bruce Hornsby
Bruce Hornsby’s work displays a creative iconoclasm that’s been a constant in the artist’s two-and-a-half decade recording career. His commercial stock soared early on, when “The Way It Is”–the title track of his 1986 debut album–became one of the most popular songs on American radio. Despite his early mainstream successes, Hornsby has pursued a more personal, idiosyncratic musical path, focusing on projects that sparked his creative interest, including collaborations with the Grateful Dead, Spike Lee, Ricky Skaggs, Don Henley, Ornette Coleman, Bob Dylan, Bela Fleck, Bonnie Raitt, Pat Metheny, and Robbie Robertson. Hornsby’s performance will offer a glimpse of a restless spirit who continues to push forward into exciting new musical terrain. Not That Old And Loving It!

Unlv BasketballHappy Holidays Took Off When Jerry Tarkanian Arrived In 1973 By Mike Henle Las Vegas has had its share of new arrivals over the years many of whom fail to deliver on their promises. In the eyes of some, the so-called experts come in driving Cadillacs and smoking cigars before leaving in the back of a Greyhound bus. However, when Jerry Tarkanian arrived in Las Vegas to take over the UNLV basketball program in 1973, the city discovered a mildmannered and colorful Armenian who didn’t promise much but would deliver big-time. Known as Tark the Shark, the former Long Beach State University basketball coach accepted the offer to move to the desert; and a boring basketball program at UNLV suddenly underwent a change that would gain the attention of the entire country. UNLV had just finished a 14-14 season while Tarkanian guided Long Beach State to a 26-3 record and its fourth straight NCAA tournament appearance. At UNLV, Tarkanian brought with him recruits including center Lewis Brown, forward Jackie Robinson, forward Glenn Gondrezick and

Long known as “Tumbleweed Tech,” with Tarkanian powering the nitro methane version of run and gun college basketball, UNLV had unknowingly started a surge that would not only attract a massive following but also result in big revenue for the university. Those UNLV boosters who had journeyed to Southern California to lure Tarkanian to the desert really recognized the man’s worth when UNLV marched to a 29-3 record and a trip to Continued on pg. 50

the 1977 NCAA College Basketball Happy Holidays Final Four in Atlanta, Ga.
had reached marquee status in a city dominated by them.
During a time long before the three-point shot had been instituted into college basketball, Tarkanian’s teams were shooting from 25 feet, suffocating the opposition’s offense with a pressuring defense that was tireless and averaging more than 107 points per game.
The success of UNLV basketball under Tarkanian’s tutelage continued to soar and was climaxed by the fact that the Running Rebels took the national championship in 1990 with a resounding 103-73 win over Duke in Denver.
When UNLV arrived in Atlanta, there was a fever of fans unlike anything the Southern Nevada school had ever experienced. An estimated 10,000 onlookers showed up for practice to see the team the entire nation was talking about.
Everyone was a fan of Runnin’ Rebel basketball ranging from cab drivers to homemakers and entertainers like Frank Sinatra whose seats on what was known
The Runnin’ Rebels would lose 84-83 to North Carolina in the semi-finals of the 1977 Final Four when Gondrezick broke the nose of center Larry Moffett as the two went after a rebound. The Tar Heels then capitalized on a game-delaying four-corner offense long before the NCAA installed the shot clock and UNLV finished third in the tournament after beating North Carolina-Charlotte in the consolation game. Indeed, in a city of movers and shakers, Tarkanian shrugged his shoulders and kept moving as attendance soared to continual sellouts at the 6,200 seat Las Vegas Convention Center. UNLV

UNLV drew the attention of cab drivers, car salesmen, homemakers and even entertainers like Frank Sinatra. The entire city was talking about UNLV basketball although Tarkanian seemed to take for granted what he had accomplished. Fearless, Tarkanian took on the NCAA when it ordered UNLV to suspend him. In October of 1977, a Nevada judge issued an injunction against the NCAA and reinstated the UNLV coach. It was after the 1991-92 season that Tarkanian parted ways with UNLV after a bitter battle with university president Robert Maxson; and the basketball program hasn’t been the same since.

Football recruit Steve Stallworth visited UNLV and was taken to a Runnin’ Rebel basketball game. He will never forget the trip in January of 1982.
While Tarkanian’s record on the court spoke for itself, it was also his record in the court of law that drew wide respect. While the NCAA continued to hound him, Tarkanian bowed his back, took the college sanctioning body to court in 1992 and settled the case by pocketing $2.5 million in 1998. The same coaches who did everything in their power to beat Tarkanian on the court were the same ones who admired what he did in a courtroom. In addition, the media found Tarkanian a treat to work with. In somewhat of a role as a comic, he always had interesting reactions to everything from recruits to the NCAA and other coaches. “Tark really did a lot for the community,” said Tom Dye, who began working for the Las Vegas Review-Journal as a sports writer before serving as sports editor from 1979-82. “He loved his players and I have never seen a more exciting basketball team than his power teams of the 1970s that scored more than 100 points a game. “There have been so many failures in this town and I admit that I was a little skeptical when Tark arrived.
