We’re not kidding - we have acres of grassy lawns surrounded by charcoal grills and picnic tables under the shade of oak trees. Our picnic area sites are first-come first-serve and are available every day of the week. In high summer Not That Old And Loving It!

we may experience the same fire-restrictions as the rest of our community, please check with park staff when you arrive to make sure you’re grilling safely.

Water Some things never change - the thing that first attracted people to our location continues to be our greatest feature. You can enjoy our water with a walk around threeacre Lake Harriet. Built in 1948 by the first of the ranch’s Hollywood owners to provide swimming, fishing and electricity, the lake today is one of the last refuges of the critically endangered Pahrump Poolfish. There is no swimming or fishing in the lake today, but it still provides a perfect environment for a walk, with benches to allow you to comfortably appreciate the spectacular vistas of Red Rock Canyon, with their contrast of sky, water, and stone. If you arrive on a Sunday afternoon in July and August you can enjoy Lake Harriet’s waters when we turn on our sprinklers and stretch out an 80 foot-long slip n slide on the picnic meadow for one of our most popular casual events.

Pioneer month Improvement & hands-on Lifestyle inHome September takes a approach to learning history with blacksmith demonstrations, dutch Calendar Of Events oven cooking, and other pioneer crafts. Our Civil War connection is kept alive with monthly visits from re-enactors who train visitors in Remembering Nevada military drill and then arm them with water-logged “sponge-bombs” and let them skirmish using Happy19th Holidays their newly-learned century military tactics, and with a largescale Civil War re-enactment in October that features re-enactors from all around the intermountain west. Other programs include ranger-guided night hikes twice per month, weekend yoga classes on our picnic meadow taught by trained instructors, and tours of our historic buildings upon request.

Outdoor Evening Entertainment For nearly forty years Spring Mountain Ranch State Park has been the host to the Super Summer Theater - a non-profit theater company that performs four different high-productionvalue plays or musicals per season, beginning in June and ending in September. Pack a picnic and enjoy a show in the evening breeze!

Hiking and Strolling We wouldn’t be a state park without hiking trails. Spring Mountain Ranch has about five miles of hiking trails ranging in difficulty from easy strolls to strenuous hikes. Our two most popular hikes are the Ash Grove hike, which tours a desert garden Continued on pg. 44

Super Summer Theatre at Spring Mountain Ranch Home Improvement & Lifestyle

Super Summer Theatre, the dba of the State Parks Cultural Arts Board, Calendar Of Events

is the place to be on a summer evening for anyone from the Las Vegas Metropolitan area. Calendar Of Events

What does Super Summer Theatre do? We give Remembering Nevada individuals, couples, families and bus loads of senior citizens who all arrive early a chance to enjoy their picnic dinner or munch on one of the famous quarter-pound hot dogs fromHappy the Holidays concession stand. After their repast the patrons can enjoy a stroll around the ranch where they might see the lone cow that lives there, a herd of burros, wild hares or many of the wild birds that nest in the area. The Krupp house is sometimes open for tours. All of the time the buildings of early settlers can be viewed, and you can walk to the reservoir then up the hill to an ancient grave yard and overlook point. The audience for 1976, our first year, was 10,162. Cars entered and parked near the front gate of the park where a bus gave them a ride to the meadow area. To introduce folks to the park Super Summer Theatre was asked to put on “Woodsy Owl Day in May of each year. This was a free day for the children of the area. After a few years the stage was moved to the meadow in the group use area. The crowds grew each year. The program changed from one show to three shows each summer. Then the Board of Directors took on the project of raising over $300,000 to build a pavilion and a concession Continued on pg. 48

stand with an accompanying sound/audio booth. Crowds continued to grow and a fourth show was added in September. The day came when the Rangers asked us to discontinue Woodsy Owl Day. After a couple years without an event in May, Super Summer Theatre decided to add a season opener, and now there is a two day performance in May to welcome our patrons to the season. As the sun sets everyone settles on a blanket or in a chair to watch live theatre under the stars. This season opens with a 2 day show, “Keepin’ it Country,” featuring Steve and Sandy Huntsman. There is always at least one show for the grandparents to share with their grandchildren. This summer there are two. In June Super Summer Theatre is featuring “Chitty, Chitty, Bang, Bang,” and in August the show is “Tarzan.” For those who

remember the good old days of the ‘60s, the July show is “Bye, Bye, Birdie.” The season closes in September with “Lend Me a Tenor.” Come, join the fun.

A major step in the growth of Super Summer Theatre is the opening of The Studios at 4340 Valley View Blvd, Las Vegas, Nevada 89103. The Studios provides a place for auditions, rehearsals and set building as well as a small conference room for meetings.

Escape From Las Vegas Happy Holidays

By Mike Henle Escape from the hustle-bustle of Las Vegas doesn’t necessarily have to be done by hopping a plane at McCarran or heading for the border in your car. In fact, the best therapy in the valley might be found by heading west on West Charleston Boulevard past the stoplights, the traffic and the non-stop creation of brown stucco houses. Worlds away from the 24-hour drag race pace of Las Vegas are a series of stops offering the beauty of Calico Basin, Red Rock, Bonnie Springs and Spring Mountain Ranch. Especially

as it relates to nature enthusiasts, the short drive not only soothes the soul but also opens the doors to meet people from all over the world who have learned about the loop only a few miles west of Las Vegas. Known as The Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, this is heaven away from the hubbub. The trip to Red Rock Canyon – especially during a classic winter storm with low-lying fog and/ or an occasional snowfall – is one of the best Not That Old And Loving It!

bargains anywhere in Southern Nevada. Seniors with $10 lifetime passes wear the rubber off their tires taking the journey on Red Rock Loop and some enthusiasts even peddle their bicycles on the 13-mile trek while even others jog the route of hilly roads or maybe even climb the mountains. When the inner city becomes too much to handle, heading west not only changes the pace but settles the nerves at the same time. Between the beauty of the red mountains, the sights of waterfalls after a storm and the animals that can be seen throughout the area, Calico Basin, Red Rock, Spring Mountain Ranch and the community of Blue Diamond are picturesque and therapeutic. So gorgeous is the area that hundreds of cars can be seen off the road to the western ledge of the road as enthusiasts wait eagerly to watch the sun fall behind the mountains.

Here’s A Bright Idea!

This isn’t the beach, but it’s almost as enjoyable for those who seldom get to the ocean and need something natural to offset the plasticity of the make believe world better known as Las Vegas, often known as the adult Disneyland of the world.

Highly Effective and Simple to Install, Solatubes Transform Dark Rooms Instantly with Pure, Natural Daylight.

There are no stop lights; no barking dogs and no sirens to interrupt your train of thought on what is known officially as State Highway 159.

FREE Glass Fixture Upgrade

There are friendly burros wandering alongside the road and through nearby Blue Diamond, which serves as the last watering hole before reaching State Highway 160. Simply put, this is another element of God’s Country where the scenery is natural; the pace is slower and the people are more down-toearth. meeting some interesting people from all parts of the globe. It’s tranquility at its best and it’s less than 20 miles from the non-stop, all-electric Las Vegas Strip. Somewhat like Zion National Park in Southern Utah, the area produces a mellow mind without the side effects of some mindaltering drug.

In fact, if the Red Rock Loop is missing anything at all, it’s an outdoor amphitheatre for concerts or plays. Knowing Southern Nevada like so many do, it wouldn’t be a surprise at all if someone eventually brings the cash, the wherewithal and the promoter’s mind to the Red Rock Loop for an amphitheatre. However, already entrenched in the area at Spring Mountain Ranch is the wildly-popular Super Summer Theater on beautiful grounds to the west of State Route 159. When the temperatures soar to triple digits during the summer, each week a steady stream of traffic

can be seen heading up West Charleston Blvd. for blockbuster hits. Fans respond in droves by bringing lawn chairs, blankets and bottles of wine to enjoy the outdoors during breathtaking evenings. There is something about the outdoors under the stars that makes Super Summer Theater the place-to-be. When the sun sets to the west, the entire atmosphere changes and Super Summer Theater takes over in a true example of very mellow and very meaningful works of art combined with the outdoors. Situated along the Spring Mountain Range, Super Summer Theater has it all and the 2015 season has along list of what will undoubtedly prove to be memorable shows starting May 1516 with Keepin’ it Country followed by Chitty Chitty Bang Bang June 10-27; Bye Bye Birdie July 8-25; Tarzan, The Stage Musical Based on the Disney film Aug. 12-29; and Ken Ludwig’s Lend Me a Tenor Sept. 10-26. However, while the current day popularity of Spring Mountain Ranch is impressive, it’s the history that is fascinating.

Happy Holidays continued renovations have turned the area

into one filled with animals, scenes of the Wild, Wild West and what amounts to a very cool environment. Nowadays, Bonnie Springs Ranch includes an Old Town, a Western setting with an authentic 1880s mining town; and a restaurant open year round that can all be used for old-fashioned gatherings.

Dating back to the 1830s, Spring Mountain Ranch was a campsite with a spring-fed creek and grassy meadows for travelers using the alternate route of the Spanish Trail. In later years, it was owned by famous Southern Nevadans like Chet Lauck of the “Lum and Abner” radio show; German movie actress Vera Krupp; millionaire Howard Hughes, generally known as the man with the great foresight ever to enter Southern Nevada; and car dealer Fletcher Jones, Sr. The Nevada Division of State Parks has operated Spring Mountain Ranch since 1974.

Worlds away and only a few miles up the road, the swing concludes with the quaint little town of Blue Diamond where the houses are diverse, a few businesses add to the charm and the burros occasionally intermingle near the local elementary school. Indeed, the short trip to the West is not only good for the soul, but also for the mental state, too. With the combination of beauty, history and some very interesting people, it’s much cheaper than a trip to your therapist’s office. Book it and go now. You won’t be sorry you did.

And in the desert where both water and greenery are hard to find especially during a drought, Spring Mountain Ranch has lush greenery and Lake Harriet that includes an incredible backdrop of mountains. Perhaps one of the most interesting elements along State Route 159 is Bonnie Springs Ranch, a truly fun gathering spot with its own very interesting history. Records show that Bonnie McGaugh purchased 115 acres of land. She and husband Al Levinson opened Bonnie Springs in 1958 and

Benefits of Professional AC Repair Remembering Nevada The heating and cooling equipment in your

Happy Holidays home is a highly sophisticated system of parts

that have to work together to safely and efficiently cool your home. A system that is not functioning properly will: • Cost you money in wasted energy and higher utility bills. • Quickly wear out much more expensive parts. • Be a hazard to your home and family.

There are many tasks that the average doit-yourself homeowner can tackle on their own, but AC repair isn’t one of them. Making a mistake on AC repair, or delaying a needed repair because you didn’t know what you were looking at or hearing can lead to costly problems later on. Using a certified HVAC expert to handle your AC repairs and maintenance has the benefit of having someone knowledgeable and qualified to work on your specific system and problem. Let’s face it, most people don’t call for an AC repair until something goes wrong. And when that happens, you need someone who will replace the right parts quickly and stand behind their work.

Something as simple as a clogged filter can quickly wear out your fan motor which is an expensive repair. Your AC system consists of several different pieces of equipment that have to work together properly to cool your home, including: • The compressor and condenser, which is the large unit outside your home which draws hot air outside your home, pressurizes the refrigerant, and sends the refrigerant up to the inside unit. • The evaporator, coils and fan is the unit that sits in your attic, basement or closet, which cools the air and blows it through your ducts. • The ducts are the system of pipes that carry the cold air through your home and pull warm air back into the system. Sound complicated? It is, and that is why AC repair is not something you want to tackle on your own. Continued on pg. 62
