Buckle your seatbelts friends; summertime has just begun to arrive in Las Vegas. The dry warm climate was what attracted me to the valley years ago and it is still one of the things that keeps me appreciating our desert oasis year after year. This is definitely a special place to live. I was with Fader Publishing when we first begin thinking about our concept of Simply 55+ Magazine; from the initial thought, to the drawing board and conference table, then to our very first issue. I can’t adequately express the excitement that came from the full participation of our whole team and the reception the community has given us. It was and still is an amazing thing to be a part of and I am grateful for the experience. I am further grateful for the trust everyone at Fader Publishing and the many people who have advertised with us. Even more importantly I am grateful to you, the readership, for your continued support as you allow us into your homes each month. It is time for Dan to take some time off… to slow down a little bit. I am happy to introduce Raymond Spencer as the new Advertising Director. I have known and respected Raymond’s work ethic in our industry for a number of years. He is a perfect addition to Fader’s team and I know you will get to know and appreciate his agreeable personality in the months to come. I can’t thank you enough! because Las Vegas has a secret known only to a select few and it involves both riding a bike and the casinos we have so casually—and at times not so casually—imploded. Have you ever wondered what happens to all that rubble created once a casino is imploded on the Strip? What do they do with all that twisted metal and busted concrete? Well, I can’t speak to the twisted metal, but I can tell you what happens to the concrete. It gets a new life on the other side of town as riprap. The large pieces of cement that are created as a result of an implosion are sent to the Wetland’s washes and weirs. A wash is a channel that is filled with water at certain times of the year, while a weir is a barrier placed across a river that is designed to alter the flow characteristics of the river. Little chunks of history that were once the Aladdin, the Desert Inn, the Dunes, the Castaways, and the Stardust are placed along washes to control erosion or create weirs. Not That Old And Loving It!
These cement pieces, called riprap, can be seen when riding a bike along the Outer Wetlands Trail and especially when crossing the bridge near the Wetlands Connector Trail. The riprap not only controls erosion, it also creates habitats for the birds and reptiles who live in the Wetlands. The Wetlands is probably one of Las Vegas’ best kept secrets, and that’s a shame because it’s a wonderful place to ride a bike. Want to forget you’re living in a desert? Then the Wetlands is the place for you. Not only does it have a series of trails that can be ridden by all types of bikes, there are also some 212 species of water fowl, desert birds, and soaring birds living among the shrub, thickets, Southern cattails, and marshes. The Wetlands Park comprises 2,900 acres of water, trails, and trees along the Las Vegas Wash. Auto Travel Sometime in the late 1950’s a Safeway butcher and meat manager in Santa Maria, CA, Bob Schutz, experimented with a cut of meat that usually was either cut into chunks of stew meat or ground up as hamburger – one day, they had an overabundance of both and he decided to try it on the spit with the top block sirloins they cooked at the store. His experiment resulted in the discovery of the Tri Tip – a cut of meat with a texture and flavor all its own. And I’m glad he experimented because this is my FAVORITE on the barbecue for the following 2 reasons…1) I don’t grill, so that means my husband John cooks that night and 2) the flavor explosion of the BBQ Tri Tip is 2nd to none. We have both gas and charcoal grills, but Calendar Of Events this particular meat, in my opinion, demands charcoal. My husband has mastered the charcoal grill over the years and here are his top tips for you to do the same.

1. Purchase a Tri Tip Roast – we have the best luck at Sam’s Club and Costco – but most meat Happy counters carry this cut – ask your butcher if Holidays Time to Barbecue!!! you can’t locate it easily. 2. Purchase Mesquite Wood Chips – trust me on this one… 3. When you are ready to barbecue, our suggestion for a tasty yet simple rub is: Coarse Salt, Garlic Powder and Ground Black Pepper – we don’t measure out the seasonings, but coat the meat generously – to date we have never over seasoned.
Prior to starting your barbecue, soak your mesquite wood chips in water for at least 1/2 hour – the longer the better, John usually soaks them for 1 hour. Fire up the charcoal – and another top tip is indirect heat – our Weber grill has charcoal Continued on pg. 20

Once you have your coals ready, place your Tri Tip on the grill and then add the mesquite wood chips you have been soaking evenly to both sides of your charcoal, replace the lid and let the grill take care of the rest.

your meat – in our experience 140 degrees the meat is medium and 135 degrees is medium rare (which I prefer). Remove the Tri Tip from the grill, wrap it in foil and let it rest for at least 10 minutes prior to cutting and serving. When you are ready to serve, it is suggested to cut against the grain. Enjoy!

Every day when I drive to work in Washington, I pass by the Iwo Jima Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery. These monuments and grave sites serve as a testament to the sacrifices of our Armed Services and constantly remind me of our responsibility to care for these men and women. One of the greatest privileges of serving Nevada is the opportunity to sit on the Senate Veterans Affairs’ Committee, where I fight to hold the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) accountable for its promises to our veterans.

With Nevada being home to over 300,000 veterans, and with approximately 27,000 of those being women veterans, I remain committed to advocating on behalf of the issues facing our veterans locally and nationwide. Chief among them is the VA disability claims backlog. I took the lead on the Veterans Affairs’ Committee to reduce the average wait time for Nevada veterans’ benefit claims by spearheading the Senate VA Backlog Working Group. While the wait time has improved from 478 days to 257 days, it is still far from the 125 days that the VA has promised, and it remains one of the longest wait times in the nation. This is unacceptable, and until the backlog is eliminated, I won’t back down. Not That Old And Loving It!
I also believe the VA must look to the future and better prepare for the rise in number of women veterans. Today, nearly 2.3 million women are veterans of military service. As I mentioned, here in Nevada we have 27,000 of them. That’s why I teamed with Senator Patty Murray of Washington, a Democrat, on legislation to make sure privacy and security in VA medical facilities are up to par and that each facility offers a full range of services to ensure female veterans are receiving proper care. While I work hard to make these goals a reality, I want to be of help to any Nevada veteran facing difficulties in working with their local VA services. Either my staff or I would be happy to assist you. To reach my Las Vegas office, please call (702) 388-6605. I will continue to fight for our veterans until they receive the care they deserve. +

Family Caregivers And Their Loved Ones Win As Governor Sandoval Signs The Care Act Into Law Auto Travel

Happy Holidays
More than 500,000 unpaid family caregivers and their loved ones will get some much needed help, as the bill known as the CARE Act (SB177) was signed into law by Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval in early May. The new law strengthens communication between hospitals and family caregivers, ensuring a designated caregiver is notified when a loved one is discharged or transferred, and receives instruction on any after-care required at home – such as managing prescriptions or dressing wounds. The bill, which passed both houses of the legislature by unanimous vote, is designed to help family caregivers be better prepared to

take care of loved ones at home – strengthening the ability of parents, spouses and other loved ones to continue to live independently, and dramatically reducing the likelihood of costly hospital readmissions. A recent AARP survey of 800 Nevada registered voters age 45 and older shows that most have either had experience as family caregivers (53 percent), or believe they are likely to be caregivers in the future (51 percent), and they are strongly in favor of measures to help improve supports for family caregivers. In addition to assisting with daily living tasks like transportation, errands and bills, more than 70 percent of Nevada caregivers also perform Not That Old And Loving It!
complex medical tasks – often with little or no training. Nevada’s unpaid family caregivers provide more than 348 million hours of care, valued at about $4 billion annually. Current or past caregivers responding to the survey report feeling stressed emotionally (66 percent). Nine in 10 current and past Nevada caregivers say it is important for them to continue to provide care for their loved one so that they can keep living independently in their own home. Seventy-six percent say it is extremely or very important for there to be more resources and training for family caregivers. That’s why AARP Nevada and more than 50 organizations statewide - from business and civic groups and faith-based organizations, to health professionals and diseasespecific advocacy groups - buoyed the CARE Act to its ultimate passage in the legislature. The new law provides for common sense steps when a loved one is hospitalized: Requiring hospitals to note a patient’s designated family caregiver in the medical record, notify the caregiver of discharge or transfer plans, and demonstrate or instruct the caregiver in any after-care required at home. These simple
measures can make the difference between a successful transition home and a return trip to the hospital, or worse. The law will take effect on January 1, 2016. “The widespread, bi-partisan support for the CARE Act underscores the universal impact family caregivers have on the health and wellbeing of all Nevadans,” said Hilarie Grey, interim state director of AARP Nevada. “We thank Governor Sandoval, Senate Health and Human Services Committee Chair Joe Hardy, the Nevada Hospital Association and all the members of the Nevada Legislature for recognizing and supporting family caregivers and their loved ones.” For more information about the CARE Act, and to connect with workshops and resources for family caregivers, visit www.aarp.org/nv +

U.S. Army Veteran, Now 90, Survived The Beaches Of Normandy 71 Years Ago Gaetano Benza, 90, with sand from Normandy. (Mike Henle photo) By Mike Henle
and Adolph Hitler.
Gaetano Benza is among the remaining war heroes now living in Southern Nevada.
“I was in water up to my chest,” recalls Benza, who had to carry a weapon over his head while heading into war to take on the Germans.
Now a spry 90 years of age, Benza lives comfortably in his North Las Vegas home, which is filled with memories of his years as a young soldier who rose to become a T Corporal in the United States Army. Benza was just 16 years old when World War II broke out in 1941. On June 6, 1944, a then 19-year-old Benza was among the soldiers with the 505th Port Battalion invading the beaches of Omaha, Normandy to take on the Germans

June/July 2015
“We were so sea sick after the boat ride from Plymouth, England,” recalled Benza, a babyfaced youngster was about to grow up quickly in what was a major real life challenge. “The water was terrible and it was rough.” Benza will never forget the sergeant in charge yelling at the troops to keep their guns high. Some 5,000 soldiers were on the boats in very rough waters. Not That Old And Loving It!
“He kept telling us that if we dropped our weapon it was of no use to us,” he recalled. “I had three clips of ammunition on one side and grenades on my other side.” When adding in the weight of his clothing, boots and a backpack, the challenges were immense. “Once you jumped into that water, you were weighted down,” Benza said of that moment 71 years ago. “I made it and we dug in once we reached the beach. We stayed there a couple of days before the infantry pushed the Germans back. Once the Germans were pushed back about 15-20 miles, we dug our foxhole with two men in each foxhole.” For the first couple of weeks, the Germans bombed the area every night. In fact, the fourmonth stay on the beach was never short of action and as the 5-foot-5, 125 pound Benza learned about living life under fire.
Here’s A Bright Idea!
“To protect ourselves from shrapnel, we would take wood that we found on the beach and place it over our foxhole,” he said. “The wood consisted of big planks and it served as great protection for all of us.”
Highly Effective and Simple to Install, Solatubes Transform Dark Rooms Instantly with Pure, Natural Daylight.
In order to keep the troops healthy, each soldier was given C Rations that were eaten first thing in the morning and later in the afternoon. Considering that the troops were involved in hauling materials, supplies and food that would be utilized by fellow troops, the work was not each. “Cold food was all we had,” said Benza, an Italian born in Brooklyn, N.Y. “I used to trade my vegetable for spaghetti because I was brought up on spaghetti and that’s all I knew.” Needless to say, no one ever forgets a time in Continued on pg. 56 Not That Old And Loving It!

their life like the one Benza had decades ago.
“I was scared to death and I wasn’t the only one; everyone was scared,” Benza recalled. “We didn’t know what it was like to brush your teeth, shower, or change our clothes. You couldn’t have a shower in those four months. “In fact, we used to take our shirts off, splash them with water and wipe ourselves down.” When the British Mulberry pier appeared on the beaches at the end of September, the long stretch out into the channel signaled leaving Normandy. “We went to Le Harve, France where we took over an abandoned German camp,” Benza recalled. “The American engineers had fixed it up. For the first time in four months, we could take a shower, brush our teeth and maybe shave.” Benza returned to the United States in December 1945. “When the war was over, they put us on a captured German liner, a troop ship, for the ride home,” he said. “It took us 11 days to get back to Scotland and another four days to get to New York.” At the port in New York, Benza heard his name being paged. “I had to go to a mid ship,” he said. “When I got to there, I ran into my mother’s brother, who was a Navy Lieutenant in full dress. He told me that my mother was at the end of the gang plank. “I ran to see my mother and gave her a big hug and kiss. I will never forget that. I also learned

not to ask questions and just do what you’re told. In this case, one of the most important people in my life was waiting to see me.” While it’s been long time since those days when Benza was a young man then, he will never forget arriving home in Brooklyn, N.Y. on Dec. 17. “It was the first time I had seen home in three years,” he said now. “Making it ever better was that it was just before Christmas.” Benza joins other remaining military members of the U.S. military every five years. The first time was in 1965 while the last gathering in England before going to France was with the Stephens Ambrose Historical Tours group last June on what was called “Operation Overload 70th Anniversary June 2014 Tour.” “I went with a group from South Carolina,” recalled Benza. “We met in Normandy and I’d say all together, there were about 200 World War II veterans that included tank people, pilots, infantry and all of the rest of the units.” Benza can’t help but notice that each trip includes fewer friends. “There’s not many of us left,” he says softly. A professional barber, Benza remains busy cutting hair. He also goes to the gym at least once a week. “I’m a guy who never gives up,” he said. “Someone writing a book about me said that I am such a man of compassion. He said that I’m always reaching out to helping others.” The book entitled “La Havre” should be completed in July. + Not That Old And Loving It!

Tips for HostingCalendar a 4thOf Events of July Backyard BBQ Every year, millions of Americans gather to celebrate the 4th Remembering Nevada of July with fireworks, food, and fun. If you are the host this year, make your gathering a hit by keeping things as simple and carefree as possible. Happy Holidays
Also known as Independence Day, the 4th of July is a huge part of our nation’s history. It was on this day in 1776 that the Declaration of Independence was adopted resulting in the birth of a great nation. Every year, millions of Americans gather to celebrate the 4th of July with patriotic fireworks, good food, and backyard get-togethers with family and friends. If you are the host this year, make your party one to remember by following these tips.
The Planning Stage
Advance planning is what will put your 4th of July gathering over the top. Just a little preparation will go a long way toward eliminating last-minute chaos. First decide on how many people to invite and make a list of names. If there will be a large number, consider having everyone bring a side dish or dessert to keep one or two people from having to prepare all of the food. Make a note next to each name what food item will be brought. You don’t want everybody bringing potato salad. Another thing to consider is seating for everyone. Extra lawn chairs and long, folding tables are great to have on hand. Lastly, if it will be an all-day party, make sure that you have plenty of coolers full of bottled water on hand.
Decorations
Decorating for a 4th of July party is a snap. You don’t have to go overboard with elaborate decorations and it’s easy to find store-bought plates, napkins, tablecloths, etc. in the traditional colors of red, white, and blue. Streamers and

balloons make festive backyard additions, as well.
Food
Decide what kind of meat you will put on the pit. Make sure and make your purchases ahead of time and store them in the freezer. Beef brisket, pork ribs, hamburgers, and hot dogs are all popular choices for 4th of July barbecues. Other food should be kept very simple. Think convenience foods like chips and dip, finger foods like deviled eggs or corn on the cob, and fresh fruit such as watermelon. Remember, it’s hot outside so the easier the better. Hosting a barbecue in your own backyard is a great way to celebrate the 4th of July. But if you are not careful, summer fun can turn into chaos. The key to successfully hosting your barbecue and being able to enjoy it is to plan ahead and keep everything as simple and carefree as possible. + Not That Old And Loving It!
