One of the Best Hikes in Mt. Charleston – Entertainment & Food Reopened! by Branch Whitney After the devastating fire back in 2013, which closed numerous hiking trails in Financial Mt. Charleston, the Cathedral Rock trail is open again. This is one of the best hikes in Mt. Charleston. Here’s why: It’s a short hike (three miles round trip), has Auto Travel an easy to follow trail, and offers great views from the top. This trail is well traveled, especially on the weekends. If you have small children, watch them Improvement & Lifestyle carefully at the top. There Home are big drop offs.

Simply Savers

Feedback It will be at least 20 degrees cooler along the trail than down in Las Vegas. Some might want to bring an extra layer in case the temperatures drop. Not That Old And Loving It!

Overview: The trail starts easy, flattens out, and then becomes steep before reaching the peak. Comments: Cathedral Rock, the second most popular trail in Mt. Charleston, is the perfect hike for beginners. You can see Cathedral Rock, the huge pinnacle that looms above the Mt. Charleston Lodge, by looking at the imaginary 10 o’clock position as you approach the hairpin turn on 157.

Save your energy for the last quarter mile of the trail–it’s steep. Take the signed right fork when the trail divides. About a half- dozen switchbacks take you to the top of Cathedral Rock. Once on top the view becomes more spectacular with every step. Mt. Charleston Lodge lies almost 1,000 feet below and farther to the east you can see the desert floor. To the north is Mummy Mountain; to the NW is Mary Jane Falls, and to the west is Charleston Peak.

The Hike: From the trailhead, the trail starts in a westward direction at a slight grade. It winds through thick patches of aspens and evergreens. The trail turns south and heads toward the magnificent Echo Cliffs. The Cliffs have a sheer drop of almost 800 feet. As the trail snakes to the west of Echo Cliffs, a side trail leads to a small seep. Water flows almost year round, making the 100-yard walk worth the effort. Once past Echo Cliffs, the trail heads west and the grade becomes steeper as it makes its way across a slope. As you traverse the slope, you can see the destruction an avalanche can wreak on a mountain. Many trees and boulders are still misplaced by an avalanche that happened years ago. The trail flattens out as it heads toward the backside of Cathedral Rock. This is the easiest and most enjoyable part of the trail, a cakewalk through a forest, and you forget that you’re 8,000 feet above sea level. Not That Old And Loving It!

Watch children closely at the top; the drop-offs are more than 100 feet at the edges. Railings have been erected, but they seem to entice people to climb down to them. To Descend: Retrace your steps. After the hike you can visit the new Visitor Center. It’s located on the south side of the round-about that you drove past on your way to Cathedral Rock trailhead. + July/August 2015

Four Ways to Naturally Boost Testosterone Levels • Get plenty of Sleep: Studies show failing to get sufficient sleep can cause testosterone levels to drop by 10-15%. • Loose the Belly Fat: One study revealed teenage boys who are obese have 50% less testosterone than their thinner peers. • Think Vitamins & Minerals: Some vitamins and minerals (vitamin A, Vitamin E, selenium, zinc) are essential for testosterone production, but may be missing from many people’s diets; so a good multivitamin and mineral complex can be a good investment for anyone who is feeling the bedroom blues. • Don’t Stress it: Stress can play havoc with your hormone levels and is often a major contributing factor when low testosterone levels become an issue. The stress hormone “cortisol steal” can be particularly counterproductive because it often initiates an imbalance that causes testosterone production to be reduced in favor of cortisol. So chilling with some relaxing music, taking up yoga, or just going for a nice stroll in the countryside may be a pleasant way to get that “loving feeling” back on track. so it is not surprising that problems can arise when testosterone levels become low. This is a situation that can occur due to a variety of different reasons, but perhaps the reasons why levels have dropped is not so important as ensuring they are returned to a more satisfactory level as quickly as possible. Making a few lifestyle changes can often rectify the problem and restore the libido, but hectic schedules and long hours at work can sometimes make chilling out a hard thing to do. This may explain why testosterone boosting supplements appear to be increasingly popular these days. Some supplements work better than others though, so anyone who is looking for a libido-enhancing supplement is advised to only purchase from a manufacturer with a good reputation for producing supplements that deliver results. +

There are two popular bike rides in the park. Both, however, require a road bike and bit of experience riding for two reasons. The first is that each trail is relatively long (although shorter versions are available). The second is that these rides are not along dedicated trails, which means bikes share the road with vehicles—vehicles that can be paying more attention to the amazing scenery than to you and your bike. It’s not that the road is dangerous—it certainly is not—but you do have to pay close attention to your surroundings and for this reason I do not recommend taking these rides on weekends or holidays. ‘What’s in a name?’: Home Improvement & Lifestyle Utah Shakespeare Festival’s Simply Savers offerings go far beyond its Feedback namesake’s plays Calendar Of Events

It Begins With A Vision.

Calendar Of Events

Up to 18 months of planning, designing, searching, casting, rehearsing and dreaming turns the vision into reality.

Remembering Nevada

A staff of 35 people jumps to approximately 300 administrators, actors, directors and more. An almost tangible energy is in the air as they busily prepare for the last week in June when Happy Holidays promoting quality theater,” Adams said. the opening performances begin. And it is William Shakespeare who inspires all the bustle. “Even though it was written (more than 400) years ago, there’s still something about those characters, about those situations, that still speak to us today,” said R. Scott Phillips, executive director for the festival. For 53 years, the Utah Shakespeare Festival has brought Shakespeare’s works to residents and visitors of Cedar City, Utah, with the hope that his plays will continue to teach life lessons. With his plays as a base, the organization also seeks to create a varied experience by providing additional plays and learning opportunities.

A Foundation

Fred C. Adams, founder of the Utah Shakespeare Festival, wasn’t bringing anything foreign to Utah; he was building on a foundation that already existed. “Right from the beginning, when it was the state of Deseret, Brigham Young was

Brigham Young once said, “The people must have amusement as well as religion,” according to the book “The Place Which God Prepared” by Scott C. Esplin and Kenneth L. Alford. Adams further noted that even in the midst of construction on The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ Salt Lake Temple, the Salt Lake Theatre opened in 1862 to meet that need for amusement, and a legacy of love for theater in Utah was born. Adams said this early foundation of appreciation for theater, along with the desire to boost Cedar City’s economy and provide evening activities for summer tourists, served as his motivation for establishing the festival in 1961. “I think probably as important as any (reason for founding the festival) was to keep alive this passion that the early settlers had in the arts, in classical music, in classical literature and especially in the writings of William Shakespeare,” Adams said. Not That Old And Loving It!

The Utah Shakespeare Festival has continued to grow and to earn recognition on a national level. “I don’t think people realize how far-reaching this Shakespeare festival is in terms of how many top-notch people in this industry are excited and clamoring to work down here in southern Utah at this organization,” he said. In fact, the Utah Shakespeare Festival was awarded a Tony Award in 2000 for Outstanding Regional Theatre, but many residents throughout the state and surrounding region have yet to visit it. “It’s like living in Arizona and never going to the Grand Canyon a little bit,” said Brian Vaughn, who works as an artistic director with Ivers. “Right in our backyard is this world-renowned organization that is doing some of the finest work in theater in the nation.”

was “Hamlet.”

Finding Relevance

Adams said that every four years, every school district in Utah is “able to have a fully mounted, fully realized Shakespeare production for their students.”

Adams explained that one of the challenges the Utah Shakespeare Festival faces is overcoming some people’s aversion to the Bard of Avon’s work because of a lack of understanding. One of the organization’s primary missions is to help as many people as possible understand the meaning behind Shakespeare’s writings.

The festival also offers teacher training and an annual high school competition that provides students with the opportunity to perform and learn about Shakespeare plays through workshops and seminars.

Shakespeare’s works may be considered classics, but that doesn’t mean they are always popular.

“There’s something that happens when you have a positive Shakespeare theater experience,” said Michael Bahr, education director for the Utah Shakespeare Festival. “It was never meant to be read in a book; it was meant to see live and onstage.” The organization runs several education programs to create these positive experiences. A group of actors tours schools in Utah, Nevada, Arizona and Idaho every January through April to perform abbreviated versions of a Shakespeare play. The play selected for 2015 Not That Old And Loving It!

The hope is that students will see the plays’ applications in their own lives. “I find them eternally illuminating about the human condition,” Vaughn said. “At any point in anyone’s life, they will continue to resonate in new ways.” Different lessons can be learned from different works, Adams said. Through stories such as “Macbeth,” one can learn that “the end does not justify the means;” “Richard III” teaches the potential of power to corrupt; and “Romeo Continued on pg. 44 July/August 2015

Preparing Calendar Of EventsA Season

Preparations for each year of the Utah Calendar Of Events Shakespeare Festival begin long before the actors take to the stage for the first performance.

Remembering Nevada

The work starts with selecting which plays will be performed; Ivers and Vaughn do this a year in advance.

like this big matrix Tetris game that they have

Happy Holidays to play and figure out,” said Nikki Allen Koontz,

The programming is built first around which Shakespeare plays will be part of the season. “The formula, which frankly we kind of inherited and works, is we usually start looking at a history, a tragedy and a comedy,” Ivers said. In addition to the Shakespeare plays from which the festival derives its name, the organization also hosts musicals and plays by other playwrights each season. “We don’t just do Shakespeare,” Adams said. “We really are a library here of variety, of variation. The foundation is Shakespeare. We always do three, sometimes four, of Shakespeare’s plays, but we always have other plays as well.” Ivers and Vaughn also begin assembling the cast of approximately 60 actors several months in advance. They travel to places such as Chicago, New York and Los Angeles. “They have to look for actors who are versatile, who can sing, who can speak Shakespearean verse, who can dance, who can do comedy, who can do tragedies, because out of that 60 actors

media and public relations manager for the festival.

More Than Plays

Although the Utah Shakespeare Festival is well-known for its annual productions, it also offers many other elements and activities geared toward cultivating understanding for the Shakespearean culture. “Somebody can spend all day at the Shakespeare Festival and not be bored,” Koontz said. “There is something going on every hour because we know that they’re traveling such a long distance.” Half-hour orientations are offered before each show to give audience members an overview of what will occur onstage. “This was started way back in 1961-62. Fred (Adams) wanted people to feel comfortable,” Bahr said. “He doesn’t tell them the whole plot; he just gets you just enough information so he can get you going.” Continued on pg. 46 Not That Old And Loving It!

Future And Continuing Projects

The Utah Shakespeare Festival continues to plan for the future with current and upcoming projects.

The Greenshow, which is held each evening, features singing, dancing, juggling, puppet shows, food and more. Calendar Of Events “It started at the beginning of the festival as a way to help immerse people into kind of this Remembering Nevada Elizabethan atmosphere, to kind of tune their ear to the language,” Koontz said.

Happy Holidays

All of these activities, as well as prop, costume and actor seminars, are free for festivalgoers. “Part of that ticket cost is all of these free experience-based educational opportunities because part of our mission is very education-focused,” Koontz said. “We want people to feel really comfortable in the spaces, like their home.” Other offerings, such as backstage tours and Repertory Magic, where audiences can watch the stage crew and technicians change everything over from the matinee show to the evening show, are ticketed events and cost $8 each. “It’s worth the time and the energy to be transported by these plays,” Vaughn said.

Ivers and Vaughn began the Complete-the-Canon Project in 2012 with the goal to produce all 38 of Shakespeare’s plays by 2023. It will be the first time the festival will have performed all of the plays in its 53 years. For plays such as The Taming of the Shrew and King Lear, you may have more than one opportunity to see them, however, productions of plays such as this year’s Henry IV Part Two and The Two Gentlemen of Verona will definitely be more rare. So start planning now; you don’t want to miss a single experience. “A lot of it is not only doing those plays we haven’t done, but it’s also revisiting those plays that have had very little stage time,” Vaughn said. project, the festival also began its initiative to perform all of Home Improvement & plays Lifestyle Shakespeare’s history in chronological order. As some of the Simply Savers characters appear in multiple plays, Feedback some of the actors have been contracted to return to play their character in future seasons.

Calendar Of Events

The History Cycle began in 2013 with King John and Richard II Calendar Of Events and in 2014 with Henry IV Part One, then continuing this year with Henry IV Part Two, and in the future with Henry V, Henry Remembering Nevada VI Part One, Henry VI Part Two, Henry VI Part Three, Richard III, and Henry VIII. One of the goals of the History Happy Cycle isHolidays to give cohesiveness to these plays that will be engaging and dramatic. Additionally, the Utah Shakespeare Festival’s administration has planned for approximately 25 years to expand its facilities, and when the organization broke ground on March 27 2014 for the Beverley Taylor Sorenson Center for the Arts, the Utah Shakespeare Festival was forever changed. For the construction of the new center, approximately $37.1 million has been raised, but in order to finish and furnish the theatres, studios, and office spaces, $1.5 million more is needed. There are still naming opportunities available, and contributions are still needed. For more information, please contact Staci Carson at 435-586-7775 or carson@suu.edu.

Shakespearean Theatre will be replaced by the new open-air Engelstad Theatre. A third, flexible option for Festival programming is the Eileen and Allen Anes Studio Theatre, a 200-seat theatre. This theatre will provide the production of small, intimate plays to complement the offerings in the new Engelstad Theatre and the Randall L. Jones Theatre. The center will also house the Festival’s new artistic and production building, which contains offices, rehearsal space, and a new costume shop. On the opposite corner, by the Southern Utah Museum of Art, the Center will be anchored with four galleries, collection storage, and education space. “It’s going to be dusty and muddy and noisy (during construction), but it will be beautiful when it’s all completed and well worth the wait,” Phillips said. Completion is expected in 2016 in time for the quadricentennial of Shakespeare’s death. Festival organizers also plan to eventually expand the festival’s season and create more of a yearround program to provide more people with the opportunity to experience the festival. “You’ll have the opportunity to see more plays and more offerings in the coming years,” Phillips said. +

The Binion Name Will Live Forever Happy Holidays In Southern Nevada By Mike Henle www.mikehenle.com

Long before corporate America moved into the gaming world of Southern Nevada, Las Vegas had a personality. Business was conducted differently and hotel executives had faces that were recognizable. While young people were busy going to college to attain degrees in business and public relations, the best PR guys were operating in Las Vegas by the seat of their pants – and establishing milestones at the same time. Count Texas gunslinger Benny Binion among those who came to town sporting a colorful outlook on life; and convinced that the desert was the place to make money.

you by your first name. Developer Del Webb, the same guy who owned the New York Yankees, strolled into his Sahara Hotel with a big hat on his head. Webb’s long list of customers over the years in the 1970s included various members of the Bronx Bombers like pitcher Whitey Ford and homerunhitting Mickey Mantle. The Las Vegas Strip had a special allure to it; and so did downtown Las Vegas. The bean counters of corporate America hadn’t discovered Las Vegas yet and special assessment room taxes hadn’t been adopted to help offset the debts created by explosive growth.

Before the mega resorts Benny Binion, left, is seen with began to change the face Long before public relations popular actor Chill Wills. of the desert in the 1990s, was moved to social media, Milburn Stone – better masterminds like Binion known as “Doc” from Gunsmoke – arrived at strolled through casinos chatting with the the Sahara each Thanksgiving so that he could common folks while handing out comps. go fishing at Lake Mead. There were dinner shows in the early evening and cocktail shows later that night in the same showroom. Meanwhile, as Las Vegas was slowly undergoing a change that many wish had never taken place, cagey characters like Benny Binion were working the streets of downtown Las Vegas. Before a canopy was added in the early 1992, kids cruised Fremont Street and a giant mechanical sign dubbed “Howdy Partner” greeted every car-full of onlookers that came to see what was better known as “Glitter Gulch.” Lester Ben “Benny” Binion was an old-school individual from Pilot Grove, Tex. He and his wife, Teddy Jane, brought their Texas charm with them when they moved to Las Vegas in the 1950s. Texas was home for the couple, but with their four children (Ted, Jack, Brenda and Becky), the family went to work on Fremont Street in downtown Las Vegas. The family was yet another example of people with foresight seeing promise in a city in the middle of the desert especially considering that the move was made in the 1950s. Vegas also had its level of charm and it required hard work, and dedicated people with their own level of PR (public relations) was a natural. Nowadays, public relations seems to require a four-year degree from a university. However, Binion seemed to be born with the trait; and he probably could have taught a class on the subject long ago. At the time, Fremont Street was the center of the city and locals along with visitors found the area to their liking. It was true Wild Wild West and the first thing many out-of-towners saw when arriving in Not That Old And Loving It!

Southern Nevada. The Binions didn’t come to town looking for a quick score before heading back to their previous residence. In fact, they built a oncegorgeous horse ranch estate at what is now the corner of Bonanza Road and Tonopah Avenue not far from the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Truth be known, when Benny Binion arrived in Las Vegas, the dusty little town hundreds of miles from nowhere landed someone who would reach out to the rest of the world letting him know the treasure he had discovered. Fremont Street became the home of Binion’s Horseshoe Casino and the family fit into the town like a ball in a glove. Decades later after many big ideas created by others turned to dust, Binion is credited with landing the World Series of Poker in 1970 along Continued on pg. 58 July/August 2015

If anyone ever put together a list of Las Vegas residents who turned dreams into reality, Binion would be among the most noteworthy. Fellow hotelman Michael Gaughan, now 62, and the owner of the South Point Hotel Casino on South Las Vegas Boulevard, lauds Binion.

Walls had to be moved to facilitate the 3,000 pound sculpture that is now proudly displayed near a restaurant in what is a true effort by Gaughan to extend the legacy of Benny Binion. Legendary Southern Nevada publicist KJ Howe, who worked at the Mint Hotel when Binion was roaming the streets and upping the ante, has fond memories of the former Texan who left his mark in Las Vegas.

And while Binion helped bring the NFR to Las Vegas, it was Gaughan who kept it here when there were fears that the event was headed elsewhere. “The Binion family has been around for a long time,” said Gaughan. “They were innovators.” In fact, Gaughan is such a fan of the family that he relocated a giant statue of Benny Binion on a horse. Once sitting outside on grounds of Binion’s Horseshoe, Gaughan pulled off an engineering feat when he moved the statue to the inside of the South Point Boulevard South.

“Benny Binion was one of the most influential and colorful characters on Fremont Street,” recalled Howe, who was also the race director of the Mint 400 off road race. “I worked next door at the Mint and in 1970 when I was working at the Mint, I would venture next door to check the crowd. Benny would see me outside the coffee shop and he would invite me in for a cup of coffee.”

Howe was always amazed at how many people wanted to hang at the Horseshoe to see Binion. “You never knew who was going to show up,” Howe recalled. “It might have been Mayor Oran Gragson; or maybe poker champions Pug Pearson or Amarillo Slim. Continued on pg. 58 Not That Old And Loving It!

Benny would always share a yarn or two with them. “He always wanted to know how business was Many people sought advice on then-downtown at the Mint,” Howe explained. “Benny wanted to make sure that the World Series of Poker dates didn’t conflict with the Mint 400 race.” Then, too, Binion was interested in the fact that Howe had spent numerous tours with the U.S. Army in Vietnam and wanted to hear about what went on over there. “He had such a colorful distinctive twang and cadence when he talked,” Howe said. “His personality and his twang were perfect for the character that he was. “I used to call him ‘No Limit Benny’ because he would let you bet what you brought – and he often lost. But if he did, he would get it back in future wagers.” One of Nevada’s true gifts, Binion died Dec. 25, 1989. Considering his dedication in Las Vegas, his passing on Christmas Day seemed appropriate. Why don’t you feature an article on the real pros & cons on solar power? The people selling this seem to prey on the over 55 group, making them think that they will save a lot of money on their power bill. The real truth needs to be brought out.

Rodney Davis

Thank you for writing in Rodney! We will definitely consider featuring an article on solar power – that seems to be the hot new trend in the valley.

I have been in healthcare for over half a century so I know what I am taking about. I’m also a caregiver for my wife for the past ten years, and the article on page 40 abut the CARE ACT, with the smiling faces, is as hollow as anything I’ve ever seen. As my wife’s caregiver with power of attorney, hospitals and rehab facilities, and health care providers were required to keep me, the “advocate” informed of everything related to my wife’s care, aftercare, etc. I can give you a really check if

Sorry to have to inform you that the article about BBQ tri-tip is incorrect. The Wikipedia article is also incorrect. I never heard of Otto Shaeffer Sr. or Bob Schutz who both claim to have invented the tri-tip, one in Oakland, California in the early 50’s, and the other in Santa Maria, California at the same time. The tri-tip was not invented. I don’t know how you can claim to invent something that has been around for 10,500 years as part of a cow. In my Meat Buyer’s Guide to Standardized Meat Cuts published by the National Association of Meat Purveyors in 1966, there is no mention of the tri-tip. There is a triangle, however it is part of the forequarter, whereas the tri-tip is part of the hindquarter. The tri-tip is mentioned in my copy of the Meat Buyer’s Guide dated 1976. So, some time between those two dates the tri-tip came into being as standardized meat cut.

Mike Cooper

Mike, thank you for the history lesson regarding Tri-tip. To read Mike’s full comment/feedback please go to Simply55plus.com. Not That Old And Loving It!
