down, as is making sensible choices about the foods you put on your plate. For example, blood sugar levels are dramatically affected by carbohydrates, such as potatoes, rice and pasta. For many, these are food staples and eliminating them from the diet would be difficult. Instead, swap them for slow-release carbohydrates, also known as complex carbohydrates. This would mean eating wholemeal bread instead of white, swapping white rice for brown, and eating wholemeal pasta. However, low-carb diets can lead to hypoglycemia, so it is advisable to consult your doctor before embarking on such a diet plan. You will also want to limit your sugar intake, so cut down on fizzy drinks and fruit juices and drink water and herbal teas instead.
Exercise to keep weight down
people find exercise either boring or difficult, but exercise need not mean grinding away in a dance class or pounding the pavement on an intensive run. You can build more exercise into your daily life simply by walking to the shops rather than driving or walking up the stairs rather than taking the lift. Medication need not be the only recourse to controlling your diabetes. If mornings aren’t your cup of tea, perhaps you Whew! It’s hot out there and we still have a should try a night ride. Many of the bike trails ways to go before the cool winter air returns to Remembering Nevada around the valley are well lit; allowing you to our valley. ahead of you. The light or lights in the back should be red and blinking and it is a good idea to have a light on the bike itself as well as on your person. Just hook it onto your hydration pack or helmet. Red lights are used so as not to blind anyone behind you with a bright white light and blinking lights are used because they are better at catching attention. Another way to stay cool when riding is to choose trails that pass by parks and other types of greenery. Grass, though getting hard to find in our valley, cools things down considerably and trails that pass by parks or areas landscaped with trees and shrubbery tend to be much cooler than trails that pass through the desert. Here are my suggestions for trails that will help you beat the summer heat:
Paseo Verde Trail The Paseo Verde trail passes no less than three parks and when you’re not passing a park, you’re often riding right under a canopy of trees. The trail is also lit in many areas, making for a perfect nighttime ride. Additionally, this asphalt trail is just charming. It is decorated with established plants, grass, and trees and there is even a rose garden on part of the trail. Amaragosa Trail The Amargosa trail snakes its way behind and between many different communities, using land that would otherwise be left vacant. The trail passes a couple of small parks and is well landscaped, which keeps the trail cooler than other trails. It also has lights in several areas. Unlike many of the Green Valley trails, this trail is actually divided into several Continued on pg. 16

Calendar Of Events Growing up in Searchlight, my family did not travel or go on Remembering vacations, but we wereNevada able to visit what was then the most magical place for me as a young boy. About fifteen miles from our Happy Holidays home was Fort Piute Springs. It was an oasis in the desert with springs, lily pads and cattails and the ruins of a military outpost—a young boy’s dream. I returned decades later when I had children of my own and found Piute Springs in ruins. It saddened me that it would no longer give others the same enchanting experience it gave me as a child. Fort Piute Springs became my motivation to fight for the preservation of lands in Nevada. Future generations should be able to enjoy our state’s natural history and we should do everything we can to protect it. Our state boasts
some of the most beautiful desert landscapes in the world, perfectly complimenting some of the most breathtaking sunsets. I can’t think of a more peaceful place than the desert of my childhood. All Nevadans should be able to appreciate the beauty of our great state. This month, President Obama used his authority under the Antiquities Act to designate the new Basin and Range National Monument. Basin and Range will become Nevada’s newest national monument, a natural and historic moment that all Nevadans should be proud of. It brings me great joy that a stretch of Nevada’s starkly beautiful desert will remain untarnished and protected for us, as well as future Nevadans. I worked for nearly a decade to protect this land and I’m pleased Not That Old And Loving It!
that it has finally received the recognition it deserves. At the center of Basin and Range is City, a modern art sculpture by renowned artist Michael Heizer. It will be one of the largest sculptures ever built once it is completed. President Obama’s designation to preserve over 700,000 acres of the new Basin and Range includes the protection of this monumental work of art. I appreciate very much what the President has done to preserve the natural beauty, history and culture of Nevada. Thanks to this designation, Basin and Range National Monument will not suffer the same fate of Fort Piute Springs. This designation is a victory for all Nevadans, so that we can all experience the inexplicable beauty if this place we all call home. +

Strategies and Policies Needed to Help Caregivers
“Valuing the Invaluable: 2015 Update” Methodology
“AARP strongly supports strategies and policies to assist caregivers, like the CARE Act, which unanimously passed by both houses of the Nevada Legislature during the 2015 session,” said Grey. “The fact that the CARE Act not only received bipartisan support among lawmakers, but was also endorsed by more than 50 organizations across the state shows that family caregiving is a critical issue with universal impact across the lifespan.”
The estimates in this report by AARP’s Public Policy Institute are based on a meta-analysis of 11 U.S.- based surveys of family caregivers conducted between 2009 and 2014. Estimates are based on about 40 million caregivers providing an average of 18 hours of care per week to a parent, spouse/partner, or other adult loved one, at an average value of $12.51 per hour. ‘Caregiver’ is defined as an adult age 18 and older providing care to a parent, spouse, or other adult loved one with their daily activities such as bathing or dress, preparing meals, and/ or managing their finances, currently or within the last month. +
The CARE Act, which takes effect in January, 2016, helps caregivers stay informed when a loved one is hospitalized, and ensures they are trained on any needed after-care when the family member returns home. The intent of the bill was to foster independent living at home, and reduce the need for costly hospital readmissions.

The Value of Tourism in Southern Nevada By Chair Oscar B. Goodman Most people see me around Las Vegas or in photos with my signature Bombay Sapphire martini with a jalapeno in one hand and a showgirl on each arm. Why is that you may ask? I’m living the brand, and that brand is serving as the Official Ambassador of Las Vegas for tourism. Everyone knows that I am very dedicated

to Las Vegas and all that it has to offer. In 2011, The Las Vegas Convention & Visitors Authority (LVCVA) created a permanent Host Committee with two main objectives: 1. To welcome the many business and leisure visitors to Las Vegas’ citywide conventions and special events. 2. To educate the local community about the value of tourism to Southern Nevada. Not That Old And Loving It!
Typically, cities create temporary host committees to support event-specific initiatives but the LVCVA recognized the need for constant community support due to the vast number of exciting events all year long. In fact, Las Vegas is home to more than 22,000 conventions annually! In creating this ongoing Host Committee, Las Vegas set a new standard for promoting our city as the most fabulous destination for both business and leisure travel. Tourism is the lifeblood of our economy, supporting nearly half the jobs in the area and generating $50 billion in economic activity each year. Attracting more visitors is critical to the continued growth and success of our city. A key to attracting both new and repeat visitors is delivering on the brand promise by providing the best possible Not That Old And Loving It!
experience for tourists. I have always said that Las Vegas is the greatest city on the planet, and it’s our tourism industry that makes that true. The 41 million people who visit each year support jobs for 350,000 Las Vegasns, and generate $350 million each year for schools, roads, and parks from the hotel room tax. So you can see, tourism is not just a benefit for those who work in the industry, it provides benefits to every one of us who live here. As the Official Ambassador of Las Vegas, I understand the value of welcoming our visitors, but I can’t do it alone. I’m asking our entire community to help roll out the red carpet for our visitors and make them want to come back again and again. Continued on pg. 42 August/September 2015

The Host Committee relies on our ambassadors in the community to emphasize the importance of tourism to their colleagues, peers and neighbors. Home Improvement & Lifestyle There are a number of ways to Simply Savers get involved, including taking a trip to the airport toFeedback welcome large visitor groups in person, posting important tourismrelated announcements on social media or on digital signage and attending networking events Calendar Of Events throughout the valley. The Host Committee Remembering Nevada communicates with ambassadors on a monthly basis via a newsletter which provides talking points Happy and other relevant Holidays information as to how you can help. In addition, we send out detailed talking points about the major conventions and special events so you stay informed and help promote Las Vegas the top destination for leisure and business visitors.
Through the Host Committee, you can also request my services as a guest speaker for local associations or organizations. I’m also happy to provide messaging about the importance of tourism to be included in newsletters. Anyone from the community can become a Las Vegas Host Committee Ambassador by registering on our website www. lvcva.com/host or they can email our office at lvhostcommittee@ lvcva.com. Colorful Jim MarshHappy Left Washington State For Holidays Vegas In 1971 And He Hasn’t Looked Back Since By Mike Henle www.mikehenle.com When Jim Marsh arrived in Las Vegas in 1971 from Longview, Wash., he was in search of a new life. After selling his Pontiac International Harvester Fiat dealership in Longview and headed straight for the desert about 1,200 miles from the rainy northwest.
Marsh’s old home was in the middle of a massive depression, Boeing was literally on its backside and like so many others, Marsh was tired of the many months of rain and besides, Seattle had an unemployment rate of 18 percent. In fact, things were so bad in Seattle that Marsh recalls a billboard which actually said “Will the last person to leave Seattle please turn out the lights?” While Marsh was eager to find a new and drier environment, he also heard that an AMC dealership was for sale at Fremont and 17th streets. The dealership had been run into the ground and Marsh – ever the entrepreneur – had never shied from a challenge. A native of Grand Island, Neb., Marsh landed in the desert and brought with him a deadpanned outlook on life that mixed with the history of Nevada like a ball in a glove. At the time, Elvis Presley was the talk of the town at the old International Hotel, the Dean Martin, Joey Bishop, Peter Lawford, Frank Sinatra, and Sammy Davis Jr., made up the Rat Pack.
Legendary Southern Nevada businessman Jim Marsh left Washington state and moved to Las Vegas in 1971.
With all of the top-notch entertainment, Marsh was about to find a home he had never dreamed about before. He brought with him his own brand of a dynamic and downhome Continued on pg. 58

personality that made him a sure bet in a city where many other dreamers were known to lose their shirts. Wherever Marsh had gained his business sense, he was street-smart in Vegas, where the population was about 239,000 the year he arrived. Hunter Thompson had come to Las Vegas to cover the legendary Mint 400 off road race and wrote the book Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas for Rolling Stone Magazine.
The city seemed to be spreading its wings; and so was Marsh. It was time to start taking even bigger chances. Howard Hughes had arrived five years prior seeing profit in land many thought was worthless, so there had to be gold in them thar hills. Marsh saw promise, too. He was ready for Las Vegas and the city seemed ready for him, too. He would fall in love with the desert and especially the tiny towns that were a few hundred miles away. Now more than 44 years since his arrival, Marsh has become a fixture in Southern Nevada. His television commercials pitching cars have featured everything from animals to his wing tipped shoes and his daughter and grandson. In a city renowned for its share of creative minds, Marsh has methodically played the part on television while continuing to operate on the belief that personality mixed with a little goodnatured fun can actually result in a car sale. Truth be known, Marsh is one of the most recognized businessmen/personalities in Nevada. While many others from various trades have come and gone in the past four decades, Marsh has stayed consistent through thick and thin hanging on though each of the economic
pack up and leave.
In fact, while name entertainers for the most part seem to have left Las Vegas as the city has switched to more musicals and floor shows, Marsh has been on-stage since the day he arrived. Only in this case, his marquee has been adjacent to a local car dealership and not in front of a gazillion dollar hotel casino. Not one to beat his chest, Marsh is proud of his accomplishments in Southern Nevada ranging from his continued profitable years in what can be a brutal car business to his accomplishments in the outlying areas. His dry sense of humor is evident in his television commercials although he seems to take his personality for granted. “I’m not sure where I got my sense of humor,” Marsh said recently. “I think my mother got the wrong baby when she left the hospital after I was born.” While Marsh’s investments in the car business have been very successful, they have been only part of his portfolio. In Belmont about 250 miles northeast of Las Vegas, he had a tiny 48-seat nondenominational church built on a hill for the community. Then, too, he built the Long Street Inn & Casino in Amargosa Valley and he has numerous tiny motels throughout various areas of the state. Other members of his real estate portfolio includes several casinos including The Skyline on Boulder Highway; Tonopah Station/Ramada, Hum Bug Flats bar; and the Banc Club in Continued on pg. 60

Don Hamrick. “He’s one of my favorite guys.” Tonopah; the Bank/Alamo Club in Pioche;Happy Holidays Fairway Chevrolet President Greg Heinrich the Sante Fe Saloon in Goldfield; and the concurs with Hamrick while also lauding Marsh Manhattan Bar and motel in Manhattan. for getting his Chrysler Jeep dealership back. And for the past 17 years, Marsh has sponsored “I commend him for the fight,” said Heinrich annual bus rides that take history enthusiasts to adding that Marsh and Heinrich’s late father, areas that has included various mines; Colorado; Bill, were great friends more than 40 years ago. the Grand Canyon; the Eureka Opera House; “It’s a huge deal.” charcoal kilns; and Virginia City, to name a few. The 18th trip next year will likely be the last bus trip and you can bet the buses will be filled to capacity for the finale. Simply put, Marsh loves the history of Nevada so much that he has invested in it countless times and gets a kick out of visiting with people in the towns. In fact, he’s the hit of every July 4th parade in Belmont where he’s in the parade each year. Meanwhile, Marsh is about to celebrate what may be his greatest victory. He and 788 other Chrysler Jeep Dodge dealers lost their dealerships during the economic downturn in 2009; but Marsh is among only four of the dealers who are getting their stores back following a recent announcement. Marsh intends to build a new Chrysler Jeep dealership to the west of his current Kia Mitsubishi dealership and body shop on West Centennial Center Boulevard in the northwest Las Vegas Valley. While Marsh might be seen smiling from ear to ear over his latest victory, his competitors in the car business are just as happy that he was victorious. In fact, it’s not hard finding fellow car dealers who respect Marsh.
To Heinrich, Marsh has been a wonderful addition to Southern Nevada. “Whatever he does, Jim is an amazing man,’ Heinrich said. “He has been an absolute role model for the car dealers of Nevada. He’s a true Nevadan who has business holdings all over the state. He is more than a car dealer and most people don’t realize that he’s a great human being and a great citizen of our state. “He’s one of the finest car guys that I have ever known in the state of Nevada.” Added Gary Ackerman of Gaudin Motor Company, “I have known Jim for over 30 years and he is a local icon in our industry. There are very few who work as hard as Jim. He works hard in the car business, he works hard in the gaming business, he works hard in politics; he just plain works hard. “He has always been forthright, which is rare in our industry and tells it like he sees it every time. The other thing I would note is that you rarely hear someone speak ill of Jim, and that is also rare in our industry. “And those shoes!!” +
“Jim is unique, successful and beholding to no one,” praised Chapman Dodge General Manager
