lies just behind the hills cradling the town of Blue Diamond. Here can be found beginner, intermediate, and even advanced trails. In fact, there are more than 150 miles of trails, so there is definitely something for everyone. If you’re not familiar with Blue Diamond, it is the little town just off of Nevada State Route 159 on the way to Red Rock National Recreation area. The Cottonwood trails are located behind Blue Diamond in the Red Rock Escarpment. Blue Diamond is home to about 290 people and at least that many burros. In fact, when riding in Cottonwood, it is not at all uncommon to see these four-legged residents. If you go early enough, you might just see them grazing in the town’s park. Now, if I haven’t lost you yet, there is Not That Old And Loving It!

something about these trails you should know. The name “mountain” is really a misnomer in Cottonwood. You’re not actually riding in mountains at all, but through the desert in lower elevations, without a great deal of climbing. So, while you may be on a “mountain” bike, you really have nothing to fear. Here are two of my favorite rides in Cottonwood: Beginner Loop As the name suggests, this ride is perfect for beginning riders, mainly because the first half of the trip is all downhill. Unfortunately, you have to pay for that downhill with a steady climb out. However, the climb is not difficult and the trail is a blast! and down the graded dirt road for another half-mile to the end of the road (Site 819). A passenger car can drive to the trailhead. Comments: This is a visually stunning hike. The wash travels between deep canyon walls and weaves around waterfalls. The boulders can be slippery. Although, it’s possible to hike all the way to the Colorado River, my route description stops at the first hot springs. There’s no way to get lost once in the wash and there are many ways down the dry and wet falls. Green arrows painted on rocks mark the route. Since the hot springs are in an open area, it’s best to have your swimsuit on underneath your hiking clothes. The Hike: From the trailhead the wash heads east with a gentle decline. Soon you’re walking between 100-foot high canyon walls with incredible rock formations around every turn. You’ll eventually come to the first dry falls. Follow the path that goes to the left and drop back into the wash once past the falls. The first tricky dry fall has steps that have been chiseled into the boulder to aid your descent. The boulder is slippery. There is normally a rope to aid the descent. When the canyon divides, stay in the main canyon. Soon you’ll see water in the wash. Continue hiking in the wash following the green arrows around the boulders and dry falls. In less than a half mile you’ll come to another tricky downclimb. There’s a rope here that is needed. The rock is very slippery. Once down there’s a hotsprings at the bottom. It has room enough for about a half a dozen people. Not That Old And Loving It!

The water is very warm, perfect for soothing sore muscles. Even when the temperature in the early parts of the canyon is cold, the hot springs warm the air around it. To Return: Retrace your steps. If your boots are wet, be careful of slipping. If in doubt about the return trip, just follow the numerous footprints. Happy Holidays

How to Support Those In Need and Where to Go for Assistance When You Need Help For many people, the holidays are a joyous occasion filled with family, food, and festivities. However, many people are less fortunate than other people are. They may not have enough food to eat or a place to live. They are alone and do not have any family to spend the holidays with. They do not see the holidays as a joyful time of year due to their dire circumstances. Why Helping Those in Need is So Important Helping people that are in need of help is one of the most important things that you can do for a human being. Not only do you help them, but also you help yourself by doing and unselfish act. This will help to bless you in. ways that you cannot imagine. Many people feel that they are too busy to help. Others may think that they cannot afford to help. However, even the smallest amount of money or time donated will make a difference. Sometimes it will make more of a difference than you could ever imagine. The slightest bit of help could change a person’s life forever.

What Are the Ways That You Can Help the Needy? There are several ways that you can help people. Below is a list of some ways that you can help: • Donate money to a charity that helps the homeless and the needy such as a shelter or a midnight mission. Many of these charities are in need of monetary donations to fund the services they offer year round. However, extra resources are needed during the holiday season. • Volunteer to serve at a soup kitchen. This is a great way to donate your time. You can help to serve meals to the homeless or those who cannot always afford a hot meal. • Donate blankets and clothing. Many people cannot afford to buy blankets or clothing for the winter. If they are homeless and living on the streets, it can get very cold at night. Providing them with items to stay warm is a great way to help them. • Donate Food. Many churches and charities have food pantries where people can go and pick up groceries when they do not have enough to eat during the month. Most of these food pantries are in need of nonperishable food donations such as canned foods, dried beans, rice, and pasta. Some charities accept fresh and frozen food donations, as well...

It is a great way to clean out your freezers and pantries and know that the food will be going to someone who needs it. • Donate Gift Cards. Several churches and charities accept gift cards to grocery stores and restaurants as an alternative to a cash donation. Clients can pick them up and use them to buy groceries or a hot meal.

Other Ways to Help There are other ways to help support people in need. Many charities have fundraisers such as golf tournaments, carnivals, and dinner events to raise money. Supporters can contribute by buying tickets to these events. These types of events are fun and relaxing and are a great way to support those in need. Another way is become a member of a charity that helps the needy. Charities are always looking for new members. Members can volunteer at different fundraising events throughout the year in addition to raising money for the charity on their own. It is a different way of helping that many people feel is so rewarding. It is also a great way to utilize your free time. Places Where Those in Need Can Go For Help For those who are in need of food, shelter, clothing, or help with housing and utility bills, there are several places where they can go to for help and assistance. While locations and types of assistance may vary by state or county, there are some standard suggestions where people can go to or call when they are in dire need. • The Salvation Army: The Salvation Army provides assistance for the homeless and others in need. They offer shelter, drug, and alcohol rehabilitation, groceries, hot meal, and clothing and utility bill assistance.

Recipients do not need to be of Roman Catholic faith to receive assistance. • Rescue Missions: There are several rescue missions located across the country that provide temporary and long term shelter, school supplies, hot meals, showers, clothing and groceries for those who are homeless or low-income. • Toys for Tots: The United States Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots program is one of the largest charities that provides toys for children in need during the holiday season. Parents and guardians can contact their local Toys for Tots chapter to sign up so that their children can receive a new toy at Christmas. If you are someone, who is need of help there are resources and places that can help you and your family during the holiday season and the rest of the year. You are not alone and do not need to go without. If you want to help the homeless and the needy during the holidays or any time of year, then contact any of the above mentioned charities or search the internet or your local telephone directory for listings of charities where you can make a donation or volunteer. +

Las Vegas Host Committee Honors American Heroes By Oscar B. Goodman, Las Vegas Host Committee Chairman

The LVCVA’s Las Vegas Host Committee is passionate about welcoming visitors to our fabulous destination with open arms. In honor of Veterans Day, we’d like to extend our thanks and gratitude for those special visitors who have bravely served our country. The Host Committee supports veterans throughout the year, and in recent months, we had the opportunity to honor some outstanding groups. On September 29th, an incredible group of World War II Veterans, the Bismarck Sea Survivors, hosted their reunion in Las Vegas. The U.S.S. Bismarck Sea was the 11th and last American aircraft carrier sunk in World War II. She was sunk on February 21, 1945 after being struck by Japanese Kamikazes during the battle for Iwo Jima. More than 300 men were lost during the attack. In 1987, three survivors established the Bismarck Sea Survivors Group with the goal of honoring these courageous veterans and their families. Since that time, the group has hosted an annual reunion to keep up-to-date on what’s

24 Simply55+

going on with the Bismarck Sea families. As time passes, it has become increasingly difficult to get the entire group together. In early September, one of the families contacted the LVCVA in hopes of receiving recommendations and updates about the destination. The group chose Las Vegas because they wanted an exciting and memorable occasion like they have had in years past. That’s when the Las Vegas Host Committee stepped in to make this reunion their best one yet! In a continued effort to support the Las Vegas Host Committee’s mission of promoting the importance of tourism in Southern Nevada and rolling out the red carpet for Las Vegas visitors, we planned a special welcome appearance and photo opportunity during the Bismarck Sea Survivors reunion meeting at the Plaza Hotel and Casino. We really enjoyed hearing the stories of bravery and meeting the families of our American heroes. The Host Committee has also worked closely Not That Old And Loving It!

with resort partners and local attractions like the Golden Nugget, The D Hotel and the Mob Museum, to ensure the Bismarck Sea Survivors had access to convenient, world-class dining and entertainment options while visiting Downtown Las Vegas. Nearly 30 people attended the Host Committee’s surprise visit during the reunion meeting, including the families and loved ones of Bismarck Sea Survivors. The brave veterans in attendance included Rudy Moraga, 89, of Las Vegas; John Papadakis, 92, of Chico, Calif.; Dick Miller, 90, of Menominee, Mich.; and Mario Mendes, 89, of Ripon, Calif. The four estimated they are the only ones of about 25 remaining survivors who could still travel to the Bismarck Sea reunions. We were honored to take part in such a special event happening right here in Las Vegas, our hope is for the Bismarck Sea Survivors to continue their annual reunions and return to our wonderful city if they do so. The Host Committee will be ready to welcome them with open arms and a martini in hand! This special event is just the latest in the Host Committee’s continued support for veterans and members of our military. In June, the Host Committee also delivered a special welcome to the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Department of Nevada State Convention at the Palace Station Hotel.

The Ladies Auxiliary to VFW Post 12093 located in Centennial Hills organized this convention that had not been held in Las Vegas for over 5 years. This service is provided at the City of Las Vegas Centennial Hills Community Center, Operated by the YMCA. The VFW is a nonprofit veterans service organization composed of eligible veterans and military service members from the active, guard and reserve forces. The VFW and its auxiliaries are dedicated to veterans service, legislative advocacy, and military and community service programs. These groups are an excellent resource to help veterans and their families understand the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) benefits available to them. It was truly a pleasure to spend time with these incredible folks. The Host Committee is always looking for new ambassadors to help welcome visitors and support events like the Bismarck Sea Survivors Reunion and the VFW Department of Nevada State Convention. Anyone from the community can become an ambassador by registering on our website www.lvcva.com/host or emailing our office at lvhostcommittee@lvcva.com. +

I helped secure $600 million for the Department of Veterans Affairs’ Southern Nevada Healthcare System and supported new VA outreach clinics across the state. This year, I was proud to announce the opening of the new VA clinic in Laughlin so that more veterans can have access to the healthcare they need. I have successfully expanded this law so now all veterans with 50% or more disability are finally receiving both their full disability and retirement checks. previously did not qualify. I led this effort because despite all the progress we have made, we have to reaffirm our commitment to ensure that all retired members of the Armed Forces with a service-connected disability are allowed to collect the benefits they deserve. In 2013, Nevada was awarded a $4.5 million grant for the United States Veterans Initiative. This grant was obtained by working with the VA, to create program that will help prevent at-risk veterans from becoming homeless and rapidly rehouse those who have fallen victim to homelessness. The grant delivered millions of dollars to serve households in Clark County, Carson City, Sparks, Hawthorne, Fallon and other surrounding counties and continues to assists Nevada veterans today. I also worked with Governor Sandoval and the VA to obtain a $33.5 million grant from the federal government that will allow the state of Nevada to construct a new veterans’ home in Northern Nevada. This project will help serve Nevada veterans and provide them with the care they deserve. I have numerous veterans on my staff in Washington and Nevada to help me serve my constituents, and I am thankful for all the work they do. I hope Nevadans and Americans around the country will join me on Veterans Day to celebrate and thank those who have served our country in the past as well as those who are currently serving. +

Traditions Worth Keeping There seems to be a war on tradition in these current times. Older heads would blame it on the rise of the millennia’s influence and technology. Millennia’s would argue that it’s those same traditions that have kept us divided for so long. Where you stand on this issue is not the focus though, what is the focus is that some of these traditions need to be fought for. The tradition of Thanksgiving and giving “thanks” in general is one such tradition.

Back in the Day The tradition of Thanksgiving wasn’t officially a “thing” until Abraham Lincoln declared it an official holiday in 1863 during the civil war. Over two hundred years prior to that was the first thanksgiving meal shared by Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians. This meal was most likely not called “Thanksgiving” but plenty of thanks was given at that meal. Only half of the original pilgrims were alive to partake of this meal as the trip over and brutal winter took the lives of many of them. When winter was over the survivors moved onto the land only to be greeted by Indians that spoke English! They taught the pilgrims how to plant corn and when the first crop successfully came in, Governor William Bradford organized a

celebratory feast. It’s not entirely clear what was on the menu, but seeing as how the Mayflower had no oven and the sugar supply was low, it’s a safe bet there were no pies, cakes or other sweet treats we’ve come to love today.

The Traditions Some of the Thanksgiving staples we’ve come to enjoy and expect might not all be rooted in the beginning but they are “must haves” now. The biggest right now would have to be turkey. Again, in 1621 it may or may not have been on the menu, but in current times, you better have a turkey in the center of that table! Baked, roasted or deep-fried we don’t care. Another tradition that has gained more traction in current times is volunteering. With the spirit of giving thanks permeating through the nation, it makes since one would want to go give back to those that are less fortunate. This is usually accomplished through food drives and free meals. The thanksgiving parade is a tradition that has become as big, if not bigger than having turkey on the table come dinnertime. Towns and cities across the entire

Religious Story of Hanukkah Religiously, the rebellion of Maccabees is celebrated as a miracle because, despite the sanctuary being torn apart by Antiochus’ soldiers, the fighters still managed to read the Torah. Singing Carols and Prayers Hanukkah has its own carols and is a festival where the entire family comes together. All the carols celebrate God’s glory and thank Him for His miracle. Happy Holidays

Howard Hughes By Mike Henle www.mikehenle.com

For as long as Las Vegas has existed, it has had a long line of interesting personalities. Right smack in the desert, the city has prospered because of people who have seen promise in the area when many others lost faith in the Las Vegas Valley. From entertainers to developers and laborers, Southern Nevada has attracted its share of characters. Some of those with tremendous foresight are the same people who might have looked like simpletons but possessed a talent that enabled them to see gold in an area many others avoided. Indeed, some of the so-called bigshots came to town smoking cigars and driving Cadillacs and many of those people left town in the back of a Greyhound bus. However, many of those who arrived silently with a top hat and a lazy smile while wearing tennis shoes had the least to say and the most to gain. Count the self-made Howard Robard Hughes, Jr. among those who journeyed to Southern Nevada without fanfare before making his mark. In today’s world of high-paid publicists touting promises and big results, Hughes’ life was largely private with results that became very public. Illustrating the man’s incredible foresight, Hughes purchased 25,000 acres in northwest

Las Vegas in what would become Summerlin that he named after his grandmother Jean Amelia Summerlin. Hughes arrived in Las Vegas as a passenger on a Union Pacific train during the night of Nov. 27, 1966. He could not get a room in the hotel, so he took up residence on the top floor of the Desert Inn on the Las Vegas Strip and the last thing he needed or wanted was a grand entry complete with floodlights, fireworks and an onslaught of media. A recluse, Hughes was not only interesting, but also eccentric. He started rolling the dice in a city known for turning many winners into losers in a very short time. It often seems that the quietest investors in Las Vegas are the ones never seen. In fact, some successful leaders want no part of television cameras or radio interviews and the majority would just as soon let others get the attention. Hughes was a celebrity, but he almost seemed to despise the idea. Formerly a movie producer and aviator, he had the money to do what he wanted in a city eager to take his last dime. Hughes’ fortune was derived from inherited money which was bolstered by his own major investments. Continued on pg. 54 Not That Old And Loving It!

Webb, a soft-spoken legend, was highly respected and Hughes liked what Webb had accomplished. A genius who was not happy with the availability of late night television programs, Hughes bought KLAS TV-8, which still sits on grounds east of the Las Vegas Strip between Convention Center Drive to the north and Desert Inn Road to the south. In fact, Hughes had a 1,200 square-foot single story house that is still on the grounds of KLAS. He bought the station because he did not like what was on television in those days. Used for meet and greet gatherings over the years, some visitors and former employees of KLAS said the house is haunted. A college dropout at Rice University before moving to Los Angeles to begin making films, Hughes certainly was not afraid to take chances. In fact, work in the movie industry resulted in his being nominated for an Academy Award. He spent an estimated $3.8 million for a flying film entitled Hell’s Angels in 1930 and evidence that he knew what he was doing was the fact that he earned an Academy Award with the films “Everybody’s Acting” and “Two Arabian Knights.”

The Slipper and its Western theme had become a popular spot in the Las Vegas Strip where it also hosted action-packed boxing matches each Wednesday night in the Silver Slipper Ballroom. Nevada volunteers needed for AARP Foundation Tax-Aide “As people age they don’t challenge their minds nearly as much as they did when they were younger,” Said Maria Dent, AARP Nevada state director. “AARP Foundation Tax-Aide volunteers are not only helping people within their community but they are giving their mind a workout as well.”

Love working with numbers and helping fellow Nevadans? AARP Foundation is looking to build its team of tax-loving volunteers in the Silver State. Tax-Aide is a free tax assistance and preparation program for taxpayers with low to moderate income through the AARP Foundation. AARP Foundation Tax-Aide has volunteer opportunities for people at every level of experience who want to stay sharp while giving back. Tax volunteers will complete a tax preparation workshop from the Internal Revenue Service prior to working with taxpayers. There is also a need for grass-roots leadership, on-site greeters, those who are skilled in technology, and dedicated translators who can provide language assistance in Spanish, Mandarin or Cantonese. Last year, nearly 300 AARP Foundation Tax-Aide volunteers helped more than 20,000 Nevadans file their federal tax returns. The program is offered at approximately 32 sites across Nevada – from Las Vegas to Reno and Truckee to Pahrump – including senior centers, libraries and other convenient locations.

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide has grown remarkably since its inaugural team of just four volunteers in 1968. The program now involves more than 35,000 volunteers and serves 2.6 million taxpayers annually at more than 5,000 sites nationwide with free tax help. Taxpayers who used AARP Foundation Tax-Aide received $1.3 billion in income tax refunds and more than $250 million in Earned Income Tax Credits (EITCs). AARP Foundation Tax-Aide, in its 48th year, is the nation’s largest free tax assistance and preparation service, and our army of volunteer advisors understand the needs of lower-income older taxpayers. This welcoming program understands that retirement or other life changes may mean taxes are can be a little more complicated, but our personal attention and assistance ensures that taxpayers of all ages and backgrounds receive applicable tax credits and deductions. You do not need to be a member of AARP or a retiree to use this service. For more information, visit www.aarp.org/ taxaide or call 1-888-OURAARP (1-888-687-2277).
