view which gives the trail its Lower Lake View name—we paused to take in the panorama that lay before us. In my hydration pack I had a bottle of sparkling apple cider, two plastic long stem glasses, and a bright shiny ring. With my girl taking in the view, I climbed off my bike, reached into my pack to pull out the ring, and found a spot relatively free of rocks to get down on one knee. She accepted and we celebrated with non-alcoholic brew before continuing our ride. But the bike riding did not end there. We had an outdoor wedding and when the preacher announced us as man and wife, halfway down the aisle we turned back and ran toward a bicycle built for two that we had sitting on the grass near us. The bike had belonged to my wife’s family and she had ridden it often

as a child. Though the bike had fallen into disrepair over the years, I had it refurbished and that day we ran to the bike, hopped on as a newly married couple, and rode away to our reception. So you see, love can happen on a bike. But first you have to get on the thing and ride. So, if love is in the air, here are a couple of trails on which you may want to take your current sweetie—or soon to be sweetie—out for a ride. Middle and Lower Lake View Loop: The very trail that I took my wife-to-be on provides some great views of Bootleg Canyon, as well as Lake Mead. Here you can see the beauty of the desert in colorful rocks and flowering plants. Although the trail is relatively short, the lower portion of the trail consists of an easy, but steady climb that takes a while to complete. Historic Railroad Tunnel Trail: Although this dirt trail is only accessible to bikes with offroad tires, you can’t pass up a chance to experience first-hand a bit of Nevada history. Located at the entrance to Lake Mead, just below the Alan Bible Visitor’s Center, are a set of five tunnels that once housed the railroad used to transport many of the materials needed to build the Hoover Dam to the dam site. While the railroad tracks have long been removed, the overly large tunnels hewn into the iron-rich rocks still exist. In a town that quickly destroys its past, this trail is a bastion of history that has been around since 1931. The family-friendly trail is wide— remember, it used to house a train—and easily accessible. + Paul W. Overweight people are also most susceptible to high blood pressure. The extra pressure causes weakness in the blood vessels and hardening of the arteries. Studies show that these problems increase risks of aneurysms, blood clots and strokes. Too many people die prematurely in our country because of heart problems that were brought on by obesity.

2. Breathing Problems The lungs need ample room to expand and contract for proper breathing. Being overweight makes this process more difficult. People who are obese often have large deposits of fat in the chest area, which hampers their ability to breathe. It is common for overweight people to suffer from asthma and chronic bronchitis. Often, they become shortwinded while completing the simplest of tasks, such as walking up a flight of stairs. Another side effect of obesity is sleep apnea. Doctors who specialize in sleep disorders report that being overweight is a

primary cause of snoring and sleep apnea. Since the body is being deprived of oxygen over a period of time, serious heart and respiratory problems can result. Doctors have to prescribe CPAP machines so apnea patients can breathe correctly. When these people lose weight, they often stop having apnea episodes all together.

3. Diabetes (Type II) When people are overweight, the whole endocrine system has problems. It is not unusual to see obese people suffering from Type II diabetes. The pancreas gets out of whack and does not produce insulin in the proper amounts necessary to metabolize sugar and starches. Diabetic patients have to closely monitor their blood sugar levels and often have to take insulin shots to regulate it. People who do not follow their doctors’ advice and watch their nutrition put themselves in danger of going blind, losing limbs, and having an early death. Looking Ahead To 2016 in Las Vegas By Oscar B. Goodman, Las Vegas Host Committee Chairman

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority(LVCVA) is tasked with promoting our fabulous city as the world’s premier destination for both leisure and business travel. Tourism is the lifeblood of our economy, supporting nearly half the jobs in the area and generating $50 billion in economic activity each year. It’s important to stay up-to-date on all of the latest local happenings because being a great place to visit makes Las Vegas a great place to live. In 2015, Las Vegas had a lot to celebrate and next year is already shaping up to be one for the record books! Here are some major milestones on the horizon for our city in the year ahead.

Breaking the Record for Visitation‌ Again In 2014, Las Vegas reached a historic milestone, exceeding 40 million visitors for the first time. The previous record was set in 2012 with more than 39 million tourists. The tourism industry in Southern Nevada continues to expand and we are on pace to break the visitation record again this year.

22 Simply55+

January/February 2016

Attracting more visitors is critical to the continued growth and success of our city. International visitation continues to be a key target for growth, as these visitors tend to stay longer and spend more. More than 6.2 million international travelers visited Las Vegas in 2014, pumping more than $8.7 billion into the local economy. Several international airline carriers including Norwegian Air, Eurowings and WestJet have recently announced new airline service to Las Vegas. These flights will provide new routes from Sweden, Denmark, Germany and Canada. Additionally, McCarran International Airport announced it will double the number of gates available to international air carriers by early 2017.

Presidential Debate All eyes will be on Las Vegas in the fall of 2016. The LVCVA partnered with the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) to submit a bid to serve as one of four host cities for the 2016 vice-presidential and presidential debates. The Commission on Presidential Debates selected Las Vegas to host the final 2016 Presidential Not That Old And Loving It!

Debate on October 19, 2016. Hosting a presidential debate will continue to increase the global visibility of Las Vegas and further our city’s reputation as a serious place to do business.

Las Vegas Convention Center District With more than 22,000 meetings held in Las Vegas annually, the meetings and convention industry is crucial to Southern Nevada’s economic success. In order to preserve Las Vegas’ reputation as the leading trade show destination in North America, the LVCVA is investing in the future with the Las Vegas Convention Center District (LVCCD).

Development of the LVCCD is expected to create thousands of jobs, pump billions of dollars into the local economy. In 2016, the LVCVA will move forward with the demolition of the LVCVA-owned Riviera to make way for rentable exhibit space for shows and events with outdoor exhibits.

Entertainment Capital Of The World Our city is home to some of the world’s best resorts, culinary venues, entertainment, special events, spas, golf courses and the list goes on. long-term economic development, create jobs, and bolster international trade. The Nevada delegation came together in a big way on this project. Overall, I am proud the Republicanled Congress enacted the first long-term highway bill in over a decade, providing the certainty needed to invest in our crumbling infrastructure. I am confident our state will reap the benefits of this legislation for years to come. The Republican Majority is dedicated to getting Congress back to work for the American people, just like I have been committed to getting work done for the Silver State. Journalism career actually started in a tiny two-bedroom home in Northern California Happy Holidays

By Mike Henle www.mikehenle.com

Now that I recently turned 65 years of age, I have found myself looking back at my life trying to re-follow my path as a writer. Ironically, we have a copy of a newspaper from Carmel Woods Elementary from back in the 1950s when I had my first byline in the school newspaper. I was seven at the time and my subject was a yo-yo contest, which I guess signals not only my first “published” work but also seems to

lead me to the world of sports writing. While I never really thought about that time more than 50 years ago, the yo-yo contest was actually a competitive event, so you might say that it was my first real step toward becoming a journalist. In actuality, that yo-yo contest in Carmel was the first inkling that I wanted to be a writer. I didn’t take the urge too serious until about four years later while living in Woodland, Calif., where I suddenly decided that I wanted to write features on my 10 favorite baseball players.

In the early-1960s, a tiny two-bedroom house in Woodland, Calif., served as the beginning of a career in writing for Southern Nevada freelance writer Mike Henle, a columnist/feature writer for Simply 55 Plus Magazine.

Happy Holidays of Northern California for the barren land of

players.

My grandmother stopped by our home in Woodland every morning to have coffee and the dedication to the project caught her attention. Once the photos of each player arrived in the mail, she would take my hand written copy to her office where she would type the features on single sheets of paper. Once I had everything organized and the photos were received, I immediately attached the stories and their photos on the wall of my tiny bedroom. While I didn’t quite understand why, seeing my work in print on the wall was a fascinating experience, especially for a 10-yearold kid who seemingly had already found his calling. As years past, I toyed with my writing before being turned away from a high school journalism class in Yuba City, Calif., because I had a C in English when a B was required. At the age of 15, a change in residences the result of a marital breakup of my mother and father suddenly found me headed for Las Vegas. So help me, I will never forget leaving my mom behind to be with my father, who had relocated in North Las Vegas. While riding in my grandparents’ vehicle, we headed for Reno before taking I-95 through some of the most desolate country I had ever experienced. On a cold and windy day in November of 1966, I would join my father and his new wife, who lived near Jim Bridger Junior High School in North Las Vegas. It was determined that after this confusing and frightening move from Northern California, I would be enrolled at Rancho High School. For a kid who had just left behind the scenery

January/February 2016

Southern Nevada, I kept asking myself just what in the world I had done. In fact, Vegas was a tremendous culture shock, so much so that my uncle would once tell my step mother, “Barbara, this is the ugliest country I have ever seen. You might as well just give it back to the Indians.” In fact, Vegas did seem ugly without the trees, the water, the fishing and the farming I had left behind in Northern California. For the life of me, nothing made sense and for the life of me, I really wondered where I was headed in what was nothing less than a traumatic change of scenery. However, the break of my life came when my parents would escort me to Rancho for a meeting with counselor Terry Mannion, who would inform me that I needed an extra class. When I saw that Journalism 101 was available, I quietly asked if I could take the class. “Of course you can,” Mrs. Mannion quickly responded. I then sheepishly responded by saying I had a C in English, and Mrs. Mannion responded by telling me the grade was no problem. Without missing as step, I enrolled in Journalism 101 and the rest is history. While writing a feature on the history of Rancho High basketball, I suddenly found myself researching the assignment at the Las Vegas Sun where sports editor Royce Feour apparently took notice. Royce hired me to cover high school athletics for $1.25 an hour and the rest is history. Before I knew it, I was covering the Silver Slipper Fight of the Week. Considering that I was still Continued on pg. 52 Not That Old And Loving It!

too young to drive, my dad would drop Happy Holidays me off at the old Silver Slipper, where I would journey into the ballroom where the cigarette smoke was so think you could cut it with a knife. For weeks, I covered the Silver Slipper fights. Once the action had been completed, I would hustle to a payphone where I’d dictate the story to Feour. Once that deadline had been met, I’d call my dad to pick me up in front of the Slipper. I was in hog heaven. Two years later, I would again join Feour at the Las Vegas Review-Journal on Main Street as a stringer. Six years later, I would give up a great gig as a bellhop at the Sahara Hotel to become high school sports editor for $4.40 an hour, a far cry from what I made as a bellhop. In December of 1989, I determined it was time to leave my post at the R-J to become a freelance writer under the name of “The Idea Company.” Some 26 years later, I’m still working as a freelance writer during a career that has no certainty from day to day, and I love what I do. Traditional journalism is a mess and many media types have been ushered out of the profession by layoffs and budget cuts. Unfortunately, the quality of journalism has also decreased especially as the internet often spawns inferior writers who work for far less money. In fact, conversations among us old-timers are often based on our fading profession which seems to have lost its luster. Press rooms are often void of significant numbers of writers covering events simply because media outlets

52 Simply55+

have cut budgets so drastically that travel has been virtually eliminated in many cases. Meanwhile, the world of freelancing has been interesting, for sure, and I’m so glad for the opportunity that was given to me more than 50 years ago. What started out covering a yo-yo contest and was fine-tuned with my ten favorite baseball players in that tiny house in Woodland, Calif., has mushroomed into a great career, and I’m very thankful to my 49 years in Las Vegas. + Not That Old And Loving It!

Working on the New You: Rejuvenation Processes The New Year also poses for a time when you can have certain work done to improve you appearance or look. Many people remain skeptical of doing anything to harm themselves that involves invasive procedures. You want to avoid these ideas yet still improve some part of your look, so how about your smile? Your smile is a contagious aspect of the self that can truly help individuals notice you or thrive off the good vibes you are giving off. Dieting Done Right: What Should I Eat? Another factor at the core of improving yourself is making sure you are eating and drinking correctly and getting enough nutrients, protein and vitamins your body needs to function in a stable basis. One recommendation for improving your diet is to consume more colorful items (mainly veggies and fruits). Consuming items from a wide range of the color spectrum allow you to mix things up and get portions of everything you need on a daily basis to be energized and feeling young again. A rather simple step can produce some amazing outcomes if used in combination with other motives mentioned above. The one thing to remember is that a new you is created through a combination of different factors and changes. It also doesn’t have to be so much the “changes” aspect, rather the simple adjustments that can do great wonders. None of these tips and ideas take too much time to complete and don’t break the bank around the holiday season. You can create a new you; you just have to maintain the mindset that it is indeed a possibility. + January/February 2016

Happy Holidays

I Heart Technology Five Cool Things That Happened on Valentine’s Day Love might be fleeting, but progress marches on forever. February 14th, that lovers’ holiday with heart-shaped candies and candlelit dinners, also shares a number of important technological milestones. Warm your inner geek before the fireplace and snuggle close with your favorite digital device. These are five Valentine’s Days that helped define history. ❥❥ 1. The Presidential Photograph The celebrity pic had its start in the nineteenth century. In his journal entry for February 14, 1849, James K. Polk, the 11th president of the United States, wrote that he “yielded to the request” of a young portrait photographer named Matthew Brady to sit for a daguerreotype. The daguerreotype photo was a direct positive process -- it did not require development from a negative -- that created a surprisingly detailed image on a polished piece of silver treated copper. The first daguerreotype cameras took ten or more minutes of exposure to produce a single image. By the time the stiff lipped Polk acquiesced to pose, however, chemical and lens technology had reduced the sitting time to a whopping ten to thirty seconds. The resulting portrait immortalized on a thin sheet of copper and under a layer of glass, is the earliest photo of a U.S. President taken while he was still in office (John Quincy Adams, the sixth president, had a daguerreotype taken in his home six years earlier). Polk’s photographer, Matthew Brady, would find additional prestige as a pioneering photojournalist. He developed a portable studio utilizing the albumen print method that he used

58 Simply55+

to document battles of the Civil War. ❥❥ 2. The Battle for the Telephone Yes, the telephone changed the world, but who, exactly, invented it? On February 14, 1876, Alexander Graham Bell filed a U.S. Patent application for his most famous invention. Not as commonly discussed in the history books, however, is the mad rush the rights for Bell’s telephone. Also filed on the morning of February 14th was a caveat or provisional patent application for essentially the same device by Elisha Gray. Representatives for Gray claimed that his patent application had been dropped off at the U.S. Patent office hours before the arrival of Bell’s, therefore making Gray the original inventor of the telephone. In a later lawsuit, Gray’s attorneys even accused Bell and his team of outright fraud. Bell’s lawyers had supposedly sneaked a peak at Gray’s application and then quickly changed Bell’s application to match it before noon on February 14th. This clash caused both patents to be suspended until Gray could respond with a full application and examination. Dr. Samuel White, a wealthy dentist who had funded many of Gray’s inventions, was told by his patent attorney to abandon the caveat and not to pursue an official examination. Because of this, Bell’s application, not Gray’s, was finally granted on March 7th. ❥❥ 3. Big Data is Born There was a time when data did not rule the world. This changed forever when IBM and its most famous president, Thomas J. Watson, Not That Old And Loving It!

Sr., took data collection forward into the next century. On February 14, 1924, Watson officially changed the name of the Computing Tabulating Recording Company (C-T-R) to the International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) to better reflect the company’s worldwide aspirations. By the early 1940s, IBM’s tabulation machines were moving millions of numbers through the world’s new data streams. The U.S. Government, for example, used IBM machines to collect and maintain its records in preparation for the Social Security system. More disturbingly, IBM, through its German subsidiary Dehomag, even supplied machines to the Third Reich. In the 50s and 60s, IBM shifted focus to its laboratories that designed many of the first mainframe computers as well as the first “learning” machine (it played checkers). IBM has continued its leading role in the information age and has designed everything from guidance systems for NASA to the supercomputer WATSON (guess who it’s named after) onJeopardy. ❥❥ 4. Welcome Our Computer Overlords The great granddaddy to your laptop was announced to the world on February 14, 1946. Designed by a team at the University of Pennsylvania, the computer was christened with the unwieldy acronym ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator And Computer). The 27-ton, nearly 1800 square foot collection of vacuum tubes, relays, and diodes was the first fully digital, reprogrammable computer. ENIAC followed an impressive line of relay machines and programmable computers, both electric and tape, that had been built in America and overseas in the 1930s and 40s. Only ENIAC had finally mastered the speed and ease of programmability demanded by the United States Army who had contracted U-Penn

Not That Old And Loving It!

to build the machine. The “Giant Brain,” as ENIAC was called in the press, was originally commissioned to calculate artillery for the war but was quickly cooped by the Los Alamos laboratories to test design computations for the hydrogen bomb. Much like its twenty-first century descendants, ENIAC had a tendency to crash. The burnout of any of the thousands of vacuum tubes needed to perform properly would often cause a complete shutdown. ❥❥ 5. The Pale Blue Dot The universe is a huge, dark place, and we sit atop a tiny dot floating in the vastness. That was confirmed for us all on February 14, 1990 when the Voyager I probe turned its camera back toward home for the ultimate selfie. The Voyager I, along with her sister probe, the Voyager II, was launched in 1977 to study Jupiter and Saturn. The unmanned missions were a success. Using the probes, scientists collected significant amounts of new data on the two gas giants. In addition, the probes took spectacular pictures of both of the planets and their moons. At the completion, the probes were allowed to continue their journeys through the solar system. Twelve years and 3.7 billion miles later, the Voyager I was the first to make it to the very edge of our solar system. In the photograph, the earth, just barely visible, appears as a bluish speck of dust. The late Carl Sagan, astronomer and all-around awesome science guy, used the term “Pale Blue Dot” in reference to the photo as a title for a subsequent book. Speaking of Sagan, he was also on the team in charge of the golden records sealed inside both probes. The golden records contain sounds and images from earth and are etched with pictograms depicting facts and data about our planet. +

Ways To Save Money in 2016 Calendar Of Events Calendar Of Events

In this day and age, money seems to go out faster than it comes in, leaving our finances at times in a precarious situation. Always trying to keep up with the latest & greatest gadgets that are out and instant gratification are two of my personal downfalls. 2016 will be the Remembering Nevada year of overcoming that, and keeping some of my hard-earned money in my own pocket. Here are some ideas I’m going to implement in my life to make that happen!

Happy Holidays

1. Create a budget – A visual of where

your money is going to each month can be real eye opener. Keep track of every penny spent for 30 days, then see what can be cut back on or cut out entirely.

2. Savings account – Have a set amount

automatically transferred to your savings each month. Got a raise this year? Pretend you didn’t and bank it instead.

3. Cut the cord! We are going to cut

cable from our lives – with our internet service, we can stream many of the programs and movies we watch free or almost free. We have Netflix, and with our Roku, there are many free apps where the boys can watch sports and I can watch many of the programs I was paying to watch with our cable provider.

62 Simply55+

January/February 2016

4. Implement the 30-day rule –

remember that instant gratification I spoke about – well I’m about to learn patience and when I’m all about buying that new gadget, I’m going to wait 30 days to make the purchase. During those 30 days I can comparison shop, think on if it is something really worth the money.

5. Lists – Make a list prior to grocery

shopping and you will save a ton. Because when you go to the market without one, you typically impulse shop and end up with more than you need. With a list, you know exactly what you need for the week or month and sticking to it will save you money in the long run!

6. Avoid Convenience Foods and Fast

Food. Instead of eating fast food or microwaving some prepackaged meal, cook your own meal! Not only is it Not That Old And Loving It!

healthier for you, but the cost per serving will save you in the end. 7. Make a few calls and negotiate better

rates on your insurance! It can never hurt and a phone call to your different providers could save you money each month.

8. While you are on your phone – call

your credit card company and ask for a reduction in your interest rates.

9. Declutter your space – time to

downsize and turn some of your unused items in your home into cash. Clean out your closets and each room in your house. I’m sure there are some items that are just collecting dust. Have a yard sale – turn those things into money!

10. Change an unhealthy habit – Do you

smoke? Or as in my case, drink too much soda? Give those up and you not only save money, your health will benefit as well!

11. Invite friends over instead of going out.

Getting together is always fun, but the cost of a night on the town can get out of hand. Host a game night, have everyone bring over a dish to share. You will all save money and have a fun night!

savings account. It may only be $10 a month, but multiply that by 12 and you have saved $120! 13. Round it up! Still use a checkbook or a

paper register to balance your checking account? Record that $74.20 water bill payment as $75 and turn that $25.15 grocery bill into $26. Do this all month with both checks and debit purchases, then transfer the difference into savings.

14. Coupons and coupons codes – always

search for coupons and coupon codes when shopping. Not only can you clip coupons in the newspaper, but you can find them online, some you have to print, others you can just show on your smartphone at the store. When shopping online, take advantage of those coupon codes!

15. Get a head start on the holidays! Total

the amount you spent this year and start saving for that amount now! Break it up over the next 10 months and when the shopping season comes around, you will be ready to pay for all your gifts in cash!

There are so many other ways to save money, but hopefully this list will help you and me get started in 2016! Happy saving!

12. Save your change! Take all of your

spare change and place it in a jar – when it gets full put it into your
