Winter Convention & Sports Calendar Brings Big Business to Las Vegas Remembering Nevada

Happy Holidays

By Oscar B. Goodman, Las Vegas Host Committee Chairman

Las Vegas welcomed more than 42 million visitors in 2015, marking another recordbreaking year for visitation and 2016 is already off to a great start. Tourism is the lifeblood of the Las Vegas economy and no other city on earth can match our ability to attract visitors. In addition to our city’s reputation as the leading destination for world-class dining, shopping and entertainment, Las Vegas is a serious place to do business. Since there is always something new to experience here, the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority identified a need to create the Las Vegas Host Committee, which provides year-round support to promote the ongoing events our city has to offer, including citywide conventions and special events. So far this year, our Host Committee ambassadors have had a lot to celebrate. This year’s convention calendar kicked off with a strong start with CES® 2016 in Las Vegas. This year’s event attracted an estimated 165,000 attendees from 150 countries. CES® 2016 is known as the world’s gathering place

20 Simply55+

for all who thrive on the business of consumer technologies. This year’s show stretched across Las Vegas from Jan. 6-9, with more than 3,600 exhibiting companies utilizing a record-breaking 2.4 million square feet of exhibit space. Some of the most talked about items at CES ®2016 included virtual reality technologies, driverless vehicles and drones. Following CES is a full calendar of events in the coming months, attracting more than 782,000 business visitors and pumping more than $661 million into the local economy. MAGIC takes center stage for Las Vegas convention activity Feb. 16-18. The event is considered the world’s largest fashion marketplace with more than 85,000 attendees heading to the Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC) and Mandalay Bay for the latest trends in apparel, footwear, accessories and manufacturing. The MAGIC Marketplace Spring Show is expected to generate $71.9 million in direct visitor spending. Get ready to shop until you drop! ASDMARKETWeek returns to the LVCC Feb. 28-March 2. Held twice annually in Las Vegas, Not That Old And Loving It!

ASD MARKETWeek brings the world’s widest variety of merchandise together in one efficient consumer-goods trade show. More than 50,000 people are expected to attend the event, providing an estimated $42.3 million in direct visitor spending. In addition to conventions and trade shows, sporting events also mean big business for Las Vegas. The Big Game between the Denver Broncos and the Carolina Panthers is sure to attract sports fans to our city for viewing parties and sports wagering. I predict the Caroline Panthers will take home the title this year. An estimated 150,000 racing fans are expected in Las Vegas March 4-6 for 2016 NASCAR Weekend at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Fans can see their favorite drivers and experience the one-of-a-kind Neon Garage featuring live music and entertainment all weekend long. The event weekend includes the Kobalt 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race, the Boyd Gaming 300 NASCAR Xfinity Series race and Stratosphere Pole Day. The sports madness continues in March, with a number of college basketball tournaments underway. To celebrate the excitement, I’ll be traveling around town on behalf of the Las Vegas Host Committee during the games with my iconic showgirls in tow. We’ll surprise basketball fans and thank them for traveling to Las Vegas to cheer on their favorite teams. Keep an eye out for coming announcements and ways to get involved. If you’re interested in becoming an official Las Vegas Host Committee Ambassador and staying up-to-date on all of the latest tourism-related news, please visit www.lvcva.com/host. It’s been featured in such horror films as “Bridge Across Time, aka Terror on the London Bridge” (1985) and “Day of the Wolves” (1971). • Kaboom! The vintage lamps on the bridge are made from the melted down cannons of Napoleon Bonaparte’s army. • When dismantled in London, England, each stone of the London Bridge was numbered Photo courtesy of the Lake Havasu City CVB

for re-assembly in Lake Havasu City. The bridge was shipped overseas to the Port of Long Beach, California, and then transported overland to Lake Havasu City, where re-assembly began in 1968. If you look carefully, you can see the numbering on many of the stones. • The London Bridge is rumored to be haunted. For years, visitors have claimed sightings of a British police bobby patrolling the bridge and a woman in black roaming the night. • Can you say guano? The London Bridge is home to hundreds of bats, which inhabit the nooks and crannies of its hollow interior. Not That Old And Loving It!

• Also calling the London Bridge home are thousands of swallows who have built their nests on the underside of the bridge out of mud pellets they gather from the shoreline of the Bridgewater Channel. • The inside of the bridge is hollow. When it was rebuilt, it needed to be able to accommodate auto traffic. During the London Bridge’s reassembly, a steel framework was faced in granite, rather than using solid granite blocks, which reduced its weight from 130,000 tons to 30,000 tons, while strengthening the structure. world famous London Bridge, lake, miniature lighthouses and beautiful Bridgewater Channel (commonly known as “The Channel”), its future site was an empty expanse of Arizona desert. Lake Havasu was formed by the construction of the Parker Dam from 19341938. The reservoir created nearly 450 miles of shoreline and was filled to its capacity of 211 billion gallons in 1940-1942. In 1963, Robert McCulloch, owner of McCulloch Motors, was flying over Lake Havasu looking for a place to test his outboard engines. He thought that the land surrounding Lake Havasu had great potential for an emerging city. Lake Havasu City was established on September 30, 1963

by resolution #63-12-1as the Lake Havasu Irrigation and Drainage District by the Mohave County Board of Supervisors, making it a legal entity. McCulloch and developer C.V. Wood joined efforts and founded what would be a thriving community. C.V. Wood had previously designed the Disneyland amusement park in Anaheim, California. After four years, a total of 16,520 acres were acquired and prepared for lease. In 1964, the land had only one unimproved road into the city. McCulloch needed a way to get prospective buyers to the new city; so he chose air charter. Between 1964 and 1978, 2,702 flights brought 137,000 potential land buyers to Lake Havasu City in a huge sales Continued on pg. 42

push that targeted mainly people from colder climates. In 1978, the last parcel of land was sold, and the city was incorporated later that year. By 1981, Lake Havasu City boasted a population of 17,000. In subsequent years, the city experienced population growth at a steady flow of about 1,000 people annually. Most came in search of refuge from big cities, and to enjoy Lake Havasu City’s beautiful weather and laid-back lifestyle. Lake Havasu City’s claim to fame is the London Bridge. The bridge was built as a conventional structure clad with the original granite to retain its antique look. The bridge was reconstructed on a dry piece of land. On October 10, 1971, the completed bridge was formally dedicated in a ceremony attended by over 50,000 American and British spectators and dignitaries. Over fifty years after Robert McCulloch’s initial visit, Lake Havasu City (elevation 735 feet) is now home to over 52,000 people and a thriving tourism industry that attracts over 775,000 visitors annually. +

Remembering Nevada Happy Holidays Looking In, From The Outside The Car Business Looks Easy By Mike Henle www.mikehenle.com With its impressive dealerships and flashy new vehicles – not to mention what appears to be great profits – it almost seems like anyone could build, own and stay ahead of the game in an industry that seems to constantly change. After all, the car business is vitally important to the well-being of not only a city but the entire nation but the automobile business is the first to feel an impending crash of the economy. This was shown by the economic collapse of 2008-09 and the recovery that followed. However, from the owner down to the lot porter who cleans the cars and sweeps the grounds, every corner of the car business has challenges. Many automobile dealership owners are also former athletes, and exceptional teamwork often is the difference between a good year and a mediocre year. Several local automobile dealers have followed in the footsteps of their fathers, who opened the doors decades long before explosive growth made Las Vegas one of the fastest-growing cities in the country. The old-time car dealers had foresight and they were astute businesspeople. When Las Vegas was a tiny community, automobile executives like Pete Findlay, Don Ackerman, Fletcher Jones, Bill Heinrich, Jim

Automobile sales are often the result of a dealer first being involved in Southern Nevada. From finding homes for unwanted pets to providing funds for various charities, car dealers have led the way for more than 50 years. The earliest car dealers were at the forefront of the economy simply because their messages were consistent through good times and bad. When local charities or non-profits need help, car dealers have set the pace in community involvement and have set the bar for other Southern Nevada businesses. The new generation of new car dealers weathered the dreadful recession of 2000-09 but not without sleepless nights caused by reviewing budgets and considering the next move. In just about every case, the prominent names of the car business survived the downturn although not without some sleepless nights. has illustrated not only the opportunities but also the risk related to children taking over dealerships from their parents. “We all knew that we had been given incredible opportunities,” Ackerman said. “However, we all also knew that we had to be aware of the possibility that we could screw up what our parents created.” Among other automobile executives who have followed their fathers into the business are Greg Heinrich, Ted Jones, Steve Olliges and Josh Towbin. If you’re employed and your company is adding new computer systems, the company is most likely going to train everyone to use them. Even among younger users, there’s a tendency to complain about how the old system worked perfectly well. Don’t fall into that trap! Your enthusiasm to learn something new not only speaks well of you to your employer, but can open your mind to learning. During training, pay attention and don’t be shy about asking questions. What To Expect During the 2016 Presidential Election Process Feedback

Calendar Of Events

Calendar Of Events

Remembering Nevada

Happy Holidays

2016 is a presidential general election year. The voters of the United States will choose a new President for the first time in 8 years on November 8th, 2016. Many events unique to a presidential election year will happen before the official Election Day.

Primary Elections Each of the political parties needs to choose their presidential candidate. Primary elections and caucuses begin February 1st, the date of the all-important Iowa caucus. They continue through June 14th and occur on different dates in each state. The two major parties, the Democrats and the Republicans, have very specific primary election procedures in each individual state.

Types of Primaries Some of the primary elections are only for one party, and others are for both at the same

56 Simply55+

February/March 2016

time. In some states the primaries are closed, meaning that voters who are registered to either the Republican or Democratic Party will vote only for the candidates running within their own party. Voters who are not registered to a party or registered as Independent will have to wait until the general election in November to vote in those states with closed primaries. In other states the primaries are open and voters can choose any candidate on the primary ballot regardless of the voter’s registered party affiliation.

Conventions After June 14th, the caucuses and primaries will be complete and delegates from each state will be declared for the chosen candidate in their party. The delegates convene at two different conventions, which occur July 18 through July 21 in Cleveland, Ohio for the Republicans and July 25 through July 28 in Not That Old And Loving It!

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for the Democrats. These conventions include speeches by important party figureheads and help the party to publicize their platform, or their party’s stand, on issues facing the country in the next four years. The conventions culminate with the announcement of the party’s chosen candidate for President according to the vote of the majority of the delegate voters sent from each state. A Vice Presidential candidate will be chosen at the same time to complete the party ticket.

Debates The new President and Vice President candidates for each party will then participate in a series of televised debates so that the country can watch the candidates speak about important issues and their plans for the country if they are elected. The first of these is scheduled for the September 26th for the Presidential candidates and the debates will continue through October. There is also traditionally one Vice Presidential candidate debate between the major party nominees for the Vice Presidency.

What Voters Can Expect

about debates or local meetings in their area, especially if the voter is registered with a major party. Candidates will likely use all of these methods to try to reach the various voter demographics in this country.

Election Day The general election is held on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November, which this year falls on Tuesday, November 8th, 2016. The expected voter turnout in an election year is over 100 million Americans, and the last election saw over 50 percent of the voting age population going to the polls. The votes will be counted and each state will use those popular votes to decide which candidate will get their electoral votes. The number of electoral votes varies by state and is assigned prior to the election according to population. An absolute majority of the electoral votes determines the winner of the presidential election. The country’s new President and Vice President will be announced when the votes are counted and the new leadership will officially take office on Inauguration Day, January 20, 2017. +

A Presidential election year is an exciting time for voters. It also comes with an increase in exposure to political media. Candidate advertisements on television, radio, and the Internet increase as the year progresses and parties solidify their tickets. Social media platforms are an important new method to get in touch with voters using their preferred medium, and they reach a wide audience. The traditional methods of political brochure and pamphlet mailings as well as telephone calls are a way for parties to inform voters Not That Old And Loving It!

Tax Season Is Around The Corner, Are You Ready?

Calendar Of Events

Calendar Of Events

Here are some tax tips from www.irs.gov to get you started! Remembering Nevada Mark your calendar - filing deadline is Monday, April 18, 2016. Happy Holidays

1.

The IRS sponsors both the VITA and TCE programs. They work with local community groups to both train and certify volunteers.

2.

The VITA program generally offers free tax return preparation and e-filing to people who earn $52,000 or less.

3.

The TCE program offers help mainly to people age 60 or older. Volunteers specialize in tax issues unique to seniors. AARP is part of the TCE program and helps taxpayers with low to moderate incomes.

4.

VITA and TCE provide free electronic filing. An e-filed tax return is the safest and most accurate way to file. Using e-file combined with direct deposit is the fastest way to get your refund.

5.

Using VITA and TCE may help ensure you get all the tax credits and deductions you’re able to claim. For

60 Simply55+

February/March 2016

example, credits that you may qualify for include the Earned Income Tax Credit, the Child Tax Credit and the Credit for the Elderly.

6.

Some sites provide bilingual help for people who speak limited English.

7.

VITA provides free tax assistance to military members and their families. Volunteers help with tax issues related to the military. These include special rules and tax benefits for those serving in combat zones.

8.

At some VITA sites, you can also prepare your own federal and state tax returns using free web-based software. This is an option if you don’t need much help or don’t have a home computer. Volunteers are on site to guide you if you need help. The selfpreparation options generally offer free tax return preparation software and e-filing to people who earn $58,000 or less. Not That Old And Loving It!

9.

For more than 40 years, the IRS has partnered with nonprofit and community organizations to offer these vital services. Thousands of VITA and TCE sites around the nation will open in late Jan. and early Feb.

10. Visit IRS.gov to find the nearest

VITA site. Search the word ’VITA’ and then click on “Free Tax Return Preparation for You by Volunteers.” Site information is also available by calling the IRS at 800-906-9887. To locate the nearest AARP Tax-Aide site, visit aarp.org, or call 888-227-7669.

Other Tips To Help You Out This Year

1.

Be organized! Have your paperwork in order, keeping a file of all tax documents, receipts, etc. This will save you in the long run.

2.

Ask when you are uncertain. When preparing your own taxes and are unsure about something tax related, make sure to get the correct information from the IRS or a tax preparation professional.

3.

Have a complicated return? It may be in your best interest to have someone prepare your taxes for you. Should you go this route, choose wisely, check the preparer’s qualifications/ history and make sure you are clear

Not That Old And Loving It!

on their service fee’s. Never sign a blank return and review your return before signing, asking any questions on anything you are not clear on.

4.

File on time or get an extension. The IRS imposes a penalty on late returns, so make sure keep on top of getting your return completed.

5.

Plan for next year! Whether you use tax preparation software or utilize a tax professional, either source will offer tips on tax planning for 2016. Run the numbers and make any adjustments that will avoid any potential headaches.
