We tend to take bicycles for granted, but when they were shown to the world, they were considered revolutionary. In 1896 Susan B. Anthony wrote of two-wheeled transportation, “Let me tell you what I think of bicycling. I think it has done more to emancipate women than anything else in the world. I stand and rejoice every time I see a woman ride by on a wheel. It gives women a feeling of freedom and selfreliance.” I dare say every girl, boy, man, and woman has experienced that same feeling when first climbing into the saddle of a bike. Some of the improvements on the bike are so minimal they can, at first, go unnoticed. One of the best examples of this is the simple handlebar. On a comfort bike, the handlebars are curved upward placing the rider in a more upright, and therefore “comfortable,” position. On the other hand, the handlebars on a road Not That Old And Loving It!
bike are curved downward—like the horns of a ram—to place the rider in a forward position. Called drop bars, these handlebars make you aerodynamic, while at the same time allowing you to switch positions, making a longer ride more comfortable. Tires are another area where vast improvements have been made. Mountain bike tires are wide and replete with thick pieces or rubber, called knobbies, designed to grab hold of and grip obstacles in the trail—like rocks. Road bike tires are thin and smooth, allowing the tire to grip asphalt or concrete. Take a road tire on a dirt trail and you will run into trouble pretty quick. If you’re even able to stay on the trail, it won’t be long before your tires pop and your rims—which are also thinner than mountain bike rims—will bend. And while a tire designed for dirt trails Continued on pg. 14 March/April 2016

This month I’ve put away the crock-pot to share with you a recipe from one of our own here at Simply 55+. As we all know I am not Simply Savers a creative cook and I was begging for ideas (no not really, I actually begged for someone to take a turn cooking for the upcoming issue, but I digress) because my creative juices were out of stock. Well, off I went and purchased the ingredients to put together the casserole last weekend and then this recipe with my family – hands down, they LOVED it. This recipe fell into the Calendar Of auditioned Events “make it again” category and we are so thrilled to share it with you! It is definitely an easy (can be Calendar Of Events prepped the night before) and flavorful meal – hope you love it too!

Ask Oscar – What People Happy Really Want toHolidays Know By Oscar B. Goodman, Las Vegas Host Committee Chairman If you’ve lived in Las Vegas for any amount of time, you’ve likely seen me out on the town, showgirls in tow and martini in hand enjoying and promoting the town that I love.
local community in support of the tourism industry and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA).
After more than 50 years in Las Vegas, I’ve had the fortune of meeting many fascinating people from around the globe and have countless conversations about my experiences in this one-of-a-kind city. As I reflect on these talks, one question comes to mind that I’m asked more than any other- “Do you miss being Mayor of Las Vegas?”
The Host Committee is unique because it is the only permanent host committee. Most cities create host committees around event-specific initiatives like the Super Bowl or the Olympics. The LVCVA identified a need for year-round support to promote the ongoing events our city has to offer. In 2015, Las Vegas welcomed a record-breaking 42.3 million visitors and there is always something new to experience in our city!
Our city has a special place in political history as I am the only mayor in the Unites States to swear in a spouse as his or her successor. That momentous occasion took place in 2011 and Carolyn has been doing a phenomenal job ever since. Getting back to whether I miss being Mayor of Las Vegas, the truth is, I miss it every single day but I sincerely believe I have the best job in the world as Chairman of the Las Vegas Host Committee and official Ambassador of Las Vegas. In 2011, another important thing happened for our city, and my career, with the creation of the Las Vegas Host Committee. The Host Committee is a permanent body charged with welcoming guests and engaging the

Appalachia-style string band music, poetry and Alaska-set stories by Ken Waldman & Bill Burke Ken Waldman has drawn on his 30 years in Alaska to produce poems, stories, and fiddle tunes that combine into a performance uniquely his. Nine CDs mix Appalachian-style stringband music with original poetry. Eight books include six poetry collections, a memoir, and a children’s book. Since 1995 he’s performed at some of the nation’s leading concert series, festivals, universities, and clubs. Of note are two CDs. Some Favorites, contains tracks from Waldman’s first seven CDs. The double- CD, All Originals, All Traditionals consists of one CD with a five-piece band playing Waldman’s originals, and a second CD of Waldman and friends playing traditional tunes to Alaska-set poetry, and includes a ten-minute treatment of Waldman’s 1996 plane crash near Nome. Bill Burke plays a number of instruments extremely well. Among the instrument types he has mastered are guitar, banjo, mandolin, and mandola. 16. When prospectors caught gold fever and hightailed it to California, San Francisco’s port became packed with abandoned ships. With demand to build the city booming, the ships were torn apart and repurposed into banks, businesses, and homes.
17. Decades later, in 1906, three quarters of the city was destroyed by an earthquake and fire. 18. Contemporary reports of the fire note that an unlikely hero helped save the city: Redwood trees. When fire hit buildings made of redwood, which has low resin content and a porous grain that takes in lots of water, they didn’t go up in smoke.

Remembering Nevada Happy Holidays Dating Back Several Decades, 89-Year Old Comedian Don Rickles Has Kept Us All In Stitches By Mike Henle www.mikehenle.com
Legendary comedian Don Rickles may be one of the oldest “name” entertainers in Las Vegas and at the age of 89 (he turns 90 May 9), he’s not planning to retire anytime soon. A multi-talented performer who has played roles in such movies as Run Silent Run Deep (1958), The Man with the X-Ray Eyes (1963), Kelly’s Heroes (1970), Enter Laughing (1967), Bikini Beach (1964), Toy Story (1995) Casino (1995), the native New Yorker is a Las Vegas legend who performed at many local venues in the old days such as the Casbar Lounge and the Congo Room of the Sahara Hotel, the Riviera and now The Orleans Hotel and Casino. Throw in his friendships over the years with such noted entertainers like Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Lucille Ball and Bob Hope, to name a few, and you have a senior citizen who remains an invaluable part of Las Vegas long after many others have passed away. Rickles has left his mark no matter where he performed and employees of the establishments have always enjoyed mixing with the man whose history in Southern Nevada goes back nearly 60 years. He has earned such caustic nicknames as Mr. Warmth, The Merchant of

Venom and Glass Head. From journalists to ex-mayors and the waiters and waitresses who worked the showrooms when dinner shows were immensely popular in Las Vegas, Rickles has identified with everyone. He made the term “hockey puck” a humorous insult and he wrote the book on how to thank employees for their service during his appearances. Audiences enjoy Rickles’ trademark good natured insults which are aimed at members of the audience and society in general in what serves as the perfect gathering for humor. Because of his loveable personality, he has many friends in Las Vegas. Former Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman, who is now the Ambassador for Las Vegas and the chairman of the host committee of the Las Vegas Convention Authority, applauds Rickles for his many years in the business. “I hope he’s around for another 40 years,” Goodman said. “I love him and have the fondest memories of he and Shecky Greene. Rickles and Goodman played roles in the movie Casino. Goodman played Sam Rothstein’s attorney while Rickles starred as Billy Sherbert, Tangiers casino manager. Automobile dealer Jim Marsh met Rickles back in the late 1970s or early 1980s and said he’ll never forget the encounter. In true Rickles style, Marsh could not escape the wrath of Las Vegas’s favorite comedian. “He just looked down at my black and white shoes and made some sarcastic remark about them,” laughed Marsh adding that it was during that time when his car dealership television commercials highlighted not only his vehicles but also his shoes. Las Vegas Review-Journal columist Norm Clarke has a classic story from the early days of Rickles in Las Vegas. “He was one of the first entertainers I saw during my first trip to Las Vegas in 1989,” Clarke recalled. “I remember waiting in line and hearing show goers discussing strategy. Some were saying ‘No way do we want to be in the front rows. We’re getting tickets in the back.’ “They didn’t want to be in the line of fire. He’s one of the few entertainers who evoked those strong feelings.”

Don Jenkins said Rickles has worked for the Boyd and his wife, Barbara, eat at Piero’s all the time Group for 15 years. and love the place.” Long-time broadcasting executive Len Howard has known Rickles for many years and he, too, has fond memories. “Don was my best man in a 1961 wedding,” recalled Howard. “He pretended that he lost the rings and all hell was about to break loose when he found them in his pocket. I love Don and his mom both. She became a friend to my mom back in New Jersey.” Rickles has certainly seen the changes in Las Vegas in the past several decades. “I’ve been performing in Las Vegas for almost 60 years starting at The Sahara and now The Orleans,” he recalled recently. “I’ve watched the scene change from the days where you had just one boss through the days of Howard Hughes to now where it’s set up for all ages mixing a carnival atmosphere with gambling. But, just like always, it’s still loaded with excitement.” To show that Rickles keeps up with current events, he said recently “If Donald Trump doesn’t win the presidency, he has no problem. He’ll buy the White House!” Boyd Corporate Gaming Director of Entertainment Terry Jenkins started with Rickles about 21 years ago in Tunica, Miss. “We have become friends over that time,” Jenkins said. “I think he loves to work and make people laugh. When he goes out on stage he just livens up even at almost 90.

“He always greets the crowd and our showroom manager,” Jenkins said. “He’s always so glad to see the same faces he has seen for so many years, and he’s a very special person to Boyd Gaming.” In 2006, Rickles became the first superstar performer to be honored in the new Roman Plaza Walk of Fame at Caesars Palace. “He’s a prince,” said Robin Feigelman, who worked as a pit clerk at the Sahara until April 1978. “His on-stage persona is the diametric opposite of the genuine individual he is offstage. When I worked in the 21 pit, the Casbar Theater was directly to my left and I saw every one of his shows. In fact, I remember when he moved to the Congo Showroom he would enter the stage through the kitchen and he would stop and do a show for the employees.” The ever-energetic Rickles has a 2016 schedule that stretches from one end of the country to the other. His March 23 appearance in the Richard B, Baumgardner Center of the Performing Arts of the Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater, Fla., with Regis Philbin will be especially memorable since it will also serve as the celebration of his 90th birthday party. Rickles returns to the Orleans April 9-10 with other stops in Westbury, N.Y., Bethlehem, Pa. and Atlantic City, to name a few. Its times like these when you have to be your own advocate Happy Holidays in order to keep more of your money in your own pocket, with a little work on your part you can definitely save big in the long run.
1.
2.
Talk with your doctor and ask if there is a cheaper alternative or generic version of your prescription. Generic drugs on average are 80% to 85% lower than brand-name products, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Be familiar with your insurance’s formulary (list of medications that are covered), the copayments for two similar drugs may extremely different. To avoid paying for the pricier drug, you need options. When your doctor wants to prescribe a new drug, ask him or her to list the top three choices. Check with your insurer to find out the copayment on each and any formulary restrictions that may

apply. Then let your doctor which one you prefer.
3.
Ask for samples! If it’s a brand-name drug, your doctor will likely have samples. Ask for 10-14 days worth so you can try it before you fill the prescription.
4.
Seek a 90-day prescription. For drugs you take long term, it can be more convenient and cheaper. When using insurance, for example, you’ll pay one co-pay rather than three. And for discount generic drug programs, the savings can be significant.
5.
Shop around! Did you know that different pharmacies, even if they Not That Old And Loving It!
are part of the same chain might not price two prescription drugs the same? Take a moment and call around to the pharmacies near you to find the best pricing. Costco and Sam’s Club both allow non-members to fill prescriptions – so include them on your comparison-shopping list.
HealthWarehouse.com is the only VIPPS accredited online pharmacy licensed in all 50 states.
8.
Use coupons. Your doctor may have coupons for you or go online to find coupons for the drugs you’re taking. A good source to try is internetdrugcoupons.com Don’t always use your health insurance, many chain and big box stores offer hundreds of common generics at prices at lower prices for people who pay out of pocket.
6.
Check with your pharmacy, they may have a discount or value program for an annual fee or even free of charge.
9.
7.
Look online. Did you know the largest online pharmacy in the United States was started in Las Vegas 9 years ago? Check out the pricing on HealthWarehouse.com, they are often times 60-70% less in price than the average retail pharmacy.
10. And finally, always ask, “Is this your
lowest price?” It never hurts to find out if you can qualify for any type of a discount.
Regardless of which pharmacy you use, choosing generic over brand-name drugs can save you the most money. Another tip, is once you found a pharmacy that you like and offers you the best deals, fill all of your prescriptions there – don’t pharmacy hop. Keeping all of your prescribed drugs in one system helps avoid duplicates and dangerous interactions.

TOP TEN SPRING CLEANING TIPS With Spring around the corner, now is a great time to air out and clean up the interior of your home, and while you are at it maybe get rid of a thing or two!
1.
Make a list – start by listing out every room in your house and the tasks you want to accomplish, like cleaning baseboards, windows, window treatments, etc.
2.
Get Ready! Make sure you have all your cleaning supplies ready to go!
3.
Clear out the junk! If you haven’t used it in the past year, you don’t need it. Donate it to charity or make some cash in a yard sale.
4.
Work smarter not harder. Start at the top and work your way down, inside to outside, this way you will avoid getting what you just cleaned dirty again.
5.
Finish what you start. Start with one area or room at a time to avoid unfinished jobs. The feeling of satisfaction of seeing one project competed will be worth it!
6.
Don’t forget the fridge and the freezer! Best time to start this task is right before you do your grocery shopping. Take everything out and dispose of any items that have passed their use-by date. Look out for opened jars and bottles, which state on the label that they should be used within a certain number of days after opening. Wipe down the interior with a damp cloth and disinfectant.
7.
Clear out the pantry too! Check for any food items that are past their sell by date. When in doubt, throw it out!
8.
Don’t forget to replace the batteries in smoke detectors and carbon-monoxide detectors. Dust can be removed by using your vacuum’s brush attachment.
9.
Change/clean filters for your air conditioner, refrigerator and dryer. Spring is also the time to have your air conditioner serviced before the hot days of summer are upon us, to ensure your ac unit is in tiptop shape!
10. And lastly now is the time to freshen carpets and upholstery.
Your carpet and furniture fabrics have absorbed dirt, dust, body oils and so on since last spring. This should be one of your last items on the interior to-do list – so why not hire a professional to come take care of that for you!
