Spring has officially arrived and we are dreaming of spending some time lounging on the beach – our featured destination, Los Cabos, is a fabulous tropical location with something for everyone, including miles of beautiful beaches! Back in the kitchen we are cooking with Martha! She has another slow cooker recipe for you to enjoy – it is a scrumptious pork chop recipe that would be perfect for a Sunday family dinner. “There is gold in them thar hills!” Goldfield, NV – Mike Henle shares with us the tale of rumored lost safes filled with gold that were swept away in 1913. So sit back, relax and enjoy reading these stories and the rest of this month’s edition of Simply 55+! As always, we hope you enjoy this and every issue! Historic Railroad Tunnel Trail This is probably one of the lesser known trails in all the valley, but also one of the best. When Hoover Dam was being built, the railroad carved a trail through the mountains to reach the dam. Though the railroad has long since left, the trail that was cut into those mountains still exists and, best of all, you can ride it. The trailhead for this extremely wide dirt trail (remember, a train used to run along it) is at the Alan Bible Visitor’s Center at the entrance to Lake Mead. Neither the trail or the parking lot used to access the trail are in Lake Mead, so there is no cost. Riding along this trail you get to pass through 5 massive tunnels, the very tunnels created to give access to large locomotives—don’t worry, the tracks have long been removed. The timbers placed there to shore up the tunnels in the 1930’s are still there and, if you go at dusk, you can witness the bats as they leave their home in a nightly search for insects. That is something you don’t want to miss! Not That Old And Loving It!
Riding with the family is one of the best ways to promote a lifetime of health and riding in Springtime, with flowers blooming, animals running to and fro, and birds singing, Spring simply can’t be beat. But with Gene Kelly and Judy Garland in the leading roles in the film version, production staff would have been drawn and quartered had there not been song after song. National Travel and Tourism Week Happy Holidays
By Oscar B. Goodman, Las Vegas Host Committee Chairman
In 2015, Las Vegas celebrated a major milestone after welcoming 42.3 million visitors. In addition to its-long standing reputation as the Entertainment Capital of the World, Las Vegas is also known as a top trade show destination. In fact, Trade Show News Network recently named Las Vegas the No. 1 trade show destination for the 22nd consecutive year after hosting 54 of the largest shows held in the country in 2015. This convention and meetings business is critical to the growth of tourism in Southern Nevada. In addition to attracting people to Las Vegas for business ventures, meetings and conventions support more than 66,500 local jobs and $2.7 billion in local wages and salaries. Overall, the meetings and convention industry has a $9.3 billion economic impact on the local community. No other city is equipped to host the volume and events of visitors that we have in Las Vegas. The destination has always been popular for weekend visits, but meetings and conventions help fill Las Vegas’ nearly 150,000 hotel rooms all week long. Now, the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority’s (LVCVA) Host Committee is calling on the community to help draw attention to the importance of tourism on our economy. Each year during the first week in May, the tourism industry nationwide celebrates National

Travel and Tourism Week, a program developed by the U.S. Travel Association. This nationwide week of events serves to champion the power of our industry, and is America’s annual salute to travel and tourism. The LVCVA has several activations planned for this year’s celebration, which takes place May 1-7, 2016. Las Vegas will mark the occasion with a special tourism rally, media appearances and a surprise activation in Downtown Las Vegas. This year, our goal is to ensure that travel - and its positive impact - is part of the discussion amidst the 2016 election season especially with the final Presidential Debate taking place in Las Vegas on October 19, 2016. After all, travel is a primary industry in Southern Nevada and nationwide. That’s why we’re having travel “hit the campaign trail” for National Travel and Tourism Week 2016. This year’s National Travel and Tourism Week theme is “Travel ’16”. There’s no debate about it - travel is a bipartisan industry that works for America. We encourage our entire community to show travel and tourism truly does matter for the well-being of our local economy not only during National Travel and Tourism Week, but all year long. You can help by signing up as a Host Committee ambassador and sharing the importance of tourism and support the many events our city has to offer. Once you sign up, we will provide details of special events in Not That Old And Loving It!
support of National Travel and Tourism week and other important tourism-related initiatives. We’d love to see you at some of the fun events we have planned for National Travel and Tourism Week. If you can’t join us, you can also show your support for the tourism industry by wearing red- a unifying color for the travel industry.

The Nevada desert has a special allure. There is a sense of beauty in land dominated by rocks, cactus and wildlife. Happy Holidays
The town of Goldfield north of Las Vegas was hit by a bad flood Sept. 18, 1913. More than 100 years ago, Goldfield was a hotbed for mining, the promised land for those willing to bring their picks, shovels and for new adventure and the possibility of a big payday. The boom year for Goldfield was in 1906 when more than $11 million in gold was mined and the population exploded to 20,000, far more than the current count of about 280. A cloudburst typical of the summer months brought the town to a standstill while causing about $100,000 in damage more than a century ago. You can still feel the devastation and if you listen closely, you can also hear a voice saying “There’s gold in them thar hills.” As the story goes, three safes filled with gold were carried away by the flood waters. The gold

has yet to found and history buffs are trying to find the cache that was swept away. The desert offers a level of peace and quiet, and considering there is an untold value still buried near Goldfield, the spot has become a popular gathering area for enthusiasts who leave Las Vegas on a Friday afternoon for a weekend in the promised land. One of those who heads north on U.S. Highway 95 to search for gold is a former Las Vegas chef who now sells vehicles for Friendly Ford in Las Vegas. He and other friends stop at Las Vegas car dealer Jim Marsh’s historic Santa Fe Saloon in Goldfield. “We go out there about four times a year,” said Not That Old And Loving It!
Native Las Vegan, Sal Ortiz, 56, is among many who still search for three safes with gold swept away more than 100 years ago in Goldfield between Beatty and Tonopah. The flood wiped out the town Sept. 18, 2013 just as the population had grown to more than 20,000. Sal Ortiz, 56, who admits that a very quiet area is screaming with history. “Once you get into Goldfield, there is a service road east of the town before you get to a dry wash bed.” From the Santa Fe, the group heads east toward what is called “The bottom wash.” About ten miles down the wash is where the gold should be waiting all these years later. Once the group settles down at their new desert camp, it’s time to relax. Sooner or later, conversation turns to the lost gold. “Who knows what it’d be worth now?” Ortiz wonders. “One safe is said to be six foot by Not That Old And Loving It!
10 foot wide. It could be worth millions at this point. The safes weigh tons.” In the meantime, the Bureau of Land Management recently removed restrictions on land in the area opening up even more acreage to explore. And as word spreads about the desert version of Megabucks, the Santa Fe Saloon and other surrounding businesses embraced the gold fever. “We mark our spots with our GPS’s,” explained Ortiz, a native Las Vegas who graduated from Bonanza High School in 1978, “This is a very serious endeavor and we hunt all over. Happy Holidays here.” “However, the story of the lost safes remains one of the hottest topics for a bunch of old prospectors like us. We’re known as the new old prospectors.” According to Ortiz, nobody knows for sure about the overall value. “You’d really have to dig down a long way to find it,” Ortiz said. “It should be down about 40-50 feet.” And the value? “Oh, it’s now worth millions,” Ortiz said. “If we ever find it, you can rest assured that we’d never have to work another day.”
Arnold said she has only heard of one missing safe, although the Las Vegas treasure hunters swear there are three. Either way, the history lives on especially at the Santa Fe Saloon. “In fact, Virgil Earp, the brother of Wyatt Earp, was the deputy sheriff in Goldfield. I love living in a small town. When you walk into the Santa Fe Saloon, you are looking at a mini-museum. The bar will be 111 years old in July.” One safe or three, it’s a great weekend away from the rigors of the big city, and the stories are never-ending. +
Ortiz said he has made friends out in the middle of nowhere. “They love it out there,” he said. “We have seen people there from Arizona, North Carolina, Utah and as far away as Connecticut. It’s a great experience that generates endless stories.” Goldfield also survived two fires. The first was March 4, 1905 when a gas lamp exploded. The second fire took place sometime later. Laurel Arnold is the manager of the saloon, the motel, the public laundry mat and anything else that needs attention. She is a native of northern Idaho. “I work the bar four days a week, although I’m on call seven days a week, 24 hours a day,” said Arnold, who has lived in Goldfield since 1988. “There are so many awesome stories

Common Foods That Are Poisonous To Dogs Feedback

Unsweetened cocoa powder is actually more dangerous than most milk chocolate as it is It’s important to know which common foods areHolidays more rich in theobromine. While most adults will Happy dangerous for dogs so that they aren’t left out know better, children and teens should be told in the open. that some need to be told that giving dogs drinks is also a bad idea. Dogs are extremely sensitive to alcohol, much more so than humans, and even a little can cause them to vomit and stumble. Beer is particularly bad as the hops used in brewing it are also toxic to them. Drinking the equivalent of a can of beer or more can lead to seizures and death in some breeds. While dogs usually show little interest in alcohol, they may be tempted to get into a bowl of “spiked” eggnog due to the milk and egg content. Mixed drinks with cream should also not be left unattended around a dog.
3) Xylitol Xylitol is a sugar substitute used in many sugarless gums, candies and breath mints. It’s great for humans, as it protects teeth from harmful bacteria while also sweetening foods without adding calories. Unfortunately, it’s terrible for dogs. Within 10 to 15 minutes after ingestion a dog’s blood sugar will drop dangerously. They may vomit, stagger or collapse. A high enough dose can cause liver failure. A toxic dose is only 0.05 grams per pound of body weight. Just one piece of gum or one mint can be dangerously toxic to smaller dogs. In addition to not leaving these foods and gums where dogs can get at them, it’s also important to look out for chewed gum wads that have been spit out in public areas.
4) Yeast
Dogs have serious trouble digesting raw bread dough made with live yeast. it sits in their stomachs for a long period, allowing the yeast to quickly multiply and expand the dough. Not That Old And Loving It!
Distension of the stomach may lead to tissue death, but an even greater danger is the alcohol that is produced as the yeast ferments. Dogs will show signs of being drunk, and in extreme cases can die of alcohol poisoning.
5) Bones Nursery rhymes can’t be trusted as a source of animal feeding advice. Dogs can experience a wide range of mishaps while gnawing on bones, from breaking their teeth to ingesting slivers that lacerate their digestive systems. Some types of bones are more safe than others, and this varies by breed and size, but to be on the safe side it’s best to avoid them altogether. Cooked bones are never safe under any circumstances. Larger uncooked meat bones are sometimes handled well by certain breeds, but there’s nothing that a bone offers to a dog’s health and diet that can’t be had from a safer source.
6) Raw Meat, Raw Eggs, Raw Fish and Spoiled Food We sometimes think of dogs as having stomachs of iron that can digest nearly anything, no matter how gross. But while dogs may be more willing to eat uncooked and unpalatable food than we are, they’re just as susceptible to dangers like salmonella, E. coli and the health problems caused by mold. Don’t use the dog as a garbage disposal for unwanted food -- if it’s likely to make a person sick, it’s very likely to make a dog sick too.
7) Fast Food Food that is too high in fat (like most fast food burgers) can cause pancreatitits in dogs, especially in the smaller breeds. While it’s April/May 2016

8) Garlic and Onions Garlic and onions both damage the red blood cells of dogs. While dogs tend to avoid raw garlic and onions, they may eat them if they are mixed in with something like a soup or stew, particularly if a powdered form was used. Symptoms of toxicity usually don’t appear for several days, after which point the dog will become unusually lethargic and may pass very dark or red urine.
9) Corn on the Cob While dogs can digest corn just fine, they’re likely to go ahead and chow down on the cob too, which can block up their intestines.

10) Raisins and Grapes Not all dogs respond poorly to raisins and grapes, but some dogs seem to have severe reactions to them. Dogs sometimes eat them with no apparent ill effects whatsoever, but there have also been cases of kidney failure and long-term kidney disease.
11) Vitamins and Supplements Containing Iron Most vitamins and minerals that are good for people are good for dogs too, but one major exception is iron. Dogs are very sensitive to it and don’t need any more than they already get in their diet. The concentrated amount in some supplements can cause kidney and liver damage. +

Does a discounted plan still offer coverage that is comprehensive?
Of course, this will depend on the company but there are companies that offer coverage for more than one pet at a very reasonable price and others who offer “Cadillac plans” for those who want lots of extras and are willing to pay for those amenities. Be sure to shop around to find the provider that is right for your needs.

Does the policy include exclusions?
Many pet insurance policies include coverage for regular pet ailments, long term trauma and hereditary diseases but check to make sure. As your pet gets older, he or she will probably suffer from some of these ailments. The cost may be higher but it is better to be sure you have the coverage you need.

Does the policy offer neutering and spaying? There are pet insurance companies that offer coverage for population control and reproductive health for pets but again it is best to weight the cost against how much you will use this benefit.
Is there prescription coverage? These days medications are very important in the treatment of your pet’s ailments. Make sure you understand the caps before purchasing the policy. It is always best to do in-depth research before you buy any insurance policy. Ask your family and friends for recommendations and carefully weigh your choices. No pet insurance company will offer a complete solution to your pet’s health needs so pick the policy with the coverage that will provide your pet with the best possible coverage for the problems you think might come up. Also check the reputation of the companies from whom you are considering purchasing insurance. All in all, pet insurance can be a great money saver but be sure to do your research and consider your needs before you commit to a policy. That way you will be able to get the best possible coverage for your money. +
Will you have to meet a deductible? Most policies for pet insurance are just like human policies regarding deductibles. Make sure you check into the details of the policy and make sure the deductible will not make the policy worthless for you. Of course, the lower the deductible the higher the premium is going to be.
Does the policy have dollar caps? Most of the time, pet policies have “caps,” or limits, on the total amount of money the policy will be willing to pay. Sometimes these caps will be for a specific illness or it might be a Not That Old And Loving It!

Raise the Temperature
Keeping the thermostat set at the warmest comfortable temperature keeps the system from running as often as it would at a lower thermostat setting. Try setting the thermostat to 78 degrees Fahrenheit. With fans in place, 78 degrees should be cool enough for most people. When leaving the house for a length of time, raise the temperature. If the thermostat is programmable, program a rise in temperature to occur after leaving for work. If the thermostat is not programmable, manually raise the temperature before leaving the house. crime has not occurred, simply being aware of your credit standing and financial history can be an easy way to catch a criminal in the act early on. You can obtain a report from any one of the three main credit bureaus: Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion. You can choose to get reports from all three agencies once a year, or to get one statement from each agency throughout the year.
Reviewing Your Credit Report
A credit report contains detailed information about your financial history. By routinely monitoring your credit report and review your credit report, you will be able to catch fraudulent activity as soon as possible. Your credit report includes your financial history, such as loans, mortgages, and credit scores.
When this information gets into the wrong hands, a lot of damage can occur. If you believe that you have become a victim of fraud, the first thing you should do is report the crime immediately. Any delay in reporting the crime means that you may be putting yourself at serious risk for financial and personal consequences. It just takes a few steps to keep yourself protected. Monitoring your credit report during the year will provide a better understanding of your accounts and financial information. You can also catch someone who has set up an account in your name or who is attempting to do so. Credit monitoring is essential for many different reasons.+

Coupon Scams: Calendar Of Events
Don’t Get Clipped Calendar Of Events
By Sid Kirchheimer Remembering NevadaNetwork AARP Fraud Watch
Maybe you saw that recent Facebook post usually requests sensitive personal information, Happy Holidays promising a free $200 Nordstrom gift card. Or including phone numbers, email addresses, dates perhaps it was that $100 coupon for Lowe’s, of birth and maybe even financial accounts. which just resurfaced after a similar “campaign” This not only opens the door to more unwanted last spring, or the latest coupon on social media, spam and robocall rip-offs but also boosts your touting a free Disneyland vacation for four. risk of identity theft. Like umpteen others that come and go, each of these recent frauds was part of at least 300 billion fake coupon offers annually that aim to pinch those who are trying to pinch pennies. (Just how bogus was the Disneyland offer? It claimed to include complimentary meals at the California theme park but listed participating restaurants located in Florida’s Disney World.)
When you complete the survey, you (and your recruited Facebook buds) may also unknowingly be enrolled in a hard-to-cancel “rewards club” that charges a monthly fee for additional fake offers. If you click a link for more details or to redeem the offer, you risk downloading malware onto your computer.
The offers and spoofed companies frequently change – Home Depot, Costco, Amazon, Pizza Hut and various supermarkets were all impersonated within the past year — but here’s what remains constant:
So don’t get clipped. Here’s what you should know about coupons you can trust — and those you shouldn’t.
First, you’re typically required to pass the fake coupon on to your Facebook friends, to expand the pool of potential victims of what comes next.
• It’s unlikely that businesses offer coupons for triple-digit savings, free vacations or the like “just because” — and a sure bet that if they do, it won’t be on social media. If an online coupon is indeed legitimate, it will be on the company’s website.
You (and your now-hooked Facebook friends) are directed to complete a survey, which

complete a survey (sometimes in exchange for a modest savings coupon for future purchases), but typically only after you’ve made an online or in-store purchase. Authentic surveys won’t ask for sensitive information like SSNs or bank or credit card accounts. • Print coupons only from trusted sources. Along with retailer websites, they include established coupon websites such as Coupons. com, SmartSource.com, CouponSherpa.com and RedPlum.com. • Don’t buy coupons advertised on social media, online forums or Internet auction sites such as eBay. They are either counterfeit, expired, obtained illegally or stolen. Coupons are not transferable; selling them violates most manufacturer redemption policies and, therefore, voids the coupons.
Not That Old And Loving It!
• Before clicking on a coupon, check it out with an online search of the offer with words like “scam” or “fraud” and see what comes up. You can also review bogus offers at the Coupon Information Center, which keeps a running list of fake coupons, especially those with more realistic (i.e., “believable”) but still phony savings. For information about other scams, sign up for the AARP Fraud Watch Network at www.aarp. org/fraudwatchnetwork. You’ll receive free email alerts with tips and resources to help you spot and avoid identity theft and fraud, and gain access to a network of experts, law enforcement and people in your community who will keep you up to date on the latest scams in your area. +

TEN WAYS TO MAKE YOUR HOME SAFER AND MORE COMFORTABLE AS YOU AGE Let’s face it, we are all getting older. As active adults, 55 and over we all want to be independent, living out our golden years in our own home. Though aging can make things can make living independently more difficult, we have put together a list of ten tips you can apply in your home to make the transition easier.
1.
If in a 2-story home, move your bedroom to the main level.
2.
Remove obstacles in the house that could cause tripping, such as rugs or other tripping hazards.
3.
Furniture should be arranged so there’s plenty of room to walk around freely.
4.
Commonly used items should be stored on easy to reach shelves in the kitchen and throughout your home.
5.
A perching stool can help ease the strain on your feet when preparing food at the counter.
6.
Use consistent lighting levels throughout the house. Low glare bulbs are best.
7.
Ensure lighting can be turned on and off from the bed by either a remote or bedside lamp.
8.
Add automatic nightlights in the bedroom and along the path to the bathroom.
9.
Place no-slip mats on the shower floor and bathtub.
10. Elevated toilet seat is helpful for those who have difficulty bending or sitting on low surfaces.
