Remembering Nevada

Stories come and go, butHappy theHolidays plane crash that took the life of actress Carole Lombard in 1942 continues to live on www.mikehenle.com

About 35 miles south of Las Vegas just west of the Gold Strike Casino is an area five miles into the mountains that evokes memories of mining and an airplane crash that took the life of a witty, famous actress more than seven decades ago. The area is also the site of a proposed residential community that was never built after the Nevada Landing Hotel Casino was leveled following the implosion of the economy in 2007. The housing was supposed to produce shelter for the employees of casino properties in the area. In Southern Nevada, you can stumble across memories of the past where buildings with deep history have been the victims of wrecking balls. Historians constantly hear that Southern Nevada has no culture because historic buildings are turned into piles of rubble the next day. Clark Gable and Carole Lombard were America’s couple before she was killed in a plane crash Jan. 16, 1942 (photo compliments of the UNLV Special Collections)

However, there is history in Southern Nevada, and one interesting piece of its past lies not far from Goodsprings, a tiny former mining town west of I-15. It was in the mountains on Jan. 16, 1942 that a Hollywood star named Carole Lombard was among the passengers killed in the crash of TWA Flight 3 that was headed from Las Vegas Airport -- now Nellis Air Force Base – to Los Angeles.

Mount Potosi will forever be remembered for the tragic event whose mystique continues to attract visitors both young and old. Many who have tried to reach the site have been forced to have their vehicles towed after incurring broken transmissions, blown tires and damaged suspensions. After the crash, rescue workers on horseback trying to recover the bodies faced even bigger challenges. While communications were nothing comparable to today’s text messages and cellular phones, word traveled quickly after the crash. Lombard’s husband, acclaimed actor Clark Gable, headed for Goodsprings hoping to discover that his wife had escaped the wrath that claimed the plane full of passengers. Gable and Lombard were beloved in America. The couple rallied behind the nation after the Not That Old And Loving It!

Gable awaited news at the Pioneer Saloon, only a short distance from the crash site. The memories of Lombard and Gable are captured in an eye-catching Carole Lombard-Clark Gable memorial room that displays everything from newspaper and magazine stories to parts of the plane that have been recovered.

Built in 1913, the bar has rich tradition and the wall attracts visitors from all over the world on a regular basis. Purchased more than 10 years ago by Oregon transplant Noel Sheckells, now 59, the Pioneer Saloon is a popular attraction because of the Gable-Lombard room. A hefty price tag of $1 million plus and the costs of renovation could not deter the family. With the help of Sheckells’ sons, Tom, 32, and Chuck, 35, the Pioneer Saloon became the home of the Carole Lombard-Clark Gable Memorial Room when Noel Sheckells started collecting memorabilia. The collection was enhanced by other items that have included crash-related items. The collection of photos and newspapers has been amassed over the years for placement on the wall. Noel Sheckells started the collection while visitors have also

Happy Holidays The story of the crash that took Lombard’s life remains a staple of the bar. Helping keep the memory alive is the fact that there are still parts of the airplane strewn all over the scene of the tragedy and Tom Sheckells has probably lost count how many times he has led visitors to the crash site. “If the plane had been about 200 yards to the southwest, there never would have been the crash at Mount Potosi,” Tom Sheckells said adding that the family puts every penny it makes back into the business. “The plane crash adds mystique to the area and the Gable-Lombard story is one of the greatest love stories of all time. This is very rustic here with its Western atmosphere which is perfect for Gable and Lombard because they were such outdoorsy people.”

Legendary actor Clark Gable, center, was devastated by the news that Carole Lombard had been killed when a plane she was in crashed into Mount Potosi Jan. 16, 1942. (photo compliments of the UNLV Special Collections)

dropped off other items related to both Gable and Lombard. “I tried to talk my dad out of buying this,” explained Tom Sheckells. “This (the bar) was in such ill-repair at the time. The windows were busted out and most of the floors were plywood. There was a hole behind the bar. There were endless needs and there was no kitchen. It was insane. It was outrageous.”

Former Las Vegas Review-Journal editor and writer A.D. Hopkins remembers that Lombard’s name was used many times in stories he oversaw in The Nevadan, a special section in the R-J.

“Men not yet born at the time have fallen in love with Carole Lombard, and once in a while, I will meet somebody who wants me to point out where the crash happened,” Hopkins recalled. “The finest tribute I know, to her memory, was from a scientist who discovered near the crash site a kind of butterfly believed to exist nowhere else in the world. It was a beautiful little thing, so he named it for her.” Not That Old And Loving It!

Freelance writer Mike Henle stands in the Carole Lombard-Clark Gable Memorial Room at the Pioneer Saloon in Goodsprings south of Las Vegas.

Carole’s Fritillary is the name of the butterfly in one of those Southern Nevada stories that will not be forgotten. Ironically, Lombard’s final movie entitled “To Be Or Not To Be” was released a month after her death. Indeed, the majority of Southern Nevada can be removed from the face of the earth, but the Carole Lombard story will live forever. Not That Old And Loving It!

Getaway To Seattle Happy Holidays

Whether you venture to Seattle on a day trip, weekend outing or full-fledged vacation, you’ll find plenty to do and see in this West Coast destination and its environs. Seattle is defined by the beautiful evergreens and natural beauty of its location in the Pacific Northwest which led to its nickname as the “Emerald City.” It’s also known for its artistic, quirky vibe, and for having more coffee shops per resident than any other U.S. city, a reputation it started earning way back in 1971 when the first Starbucks coffee shop opened here. In no particular order, here are the top ten attractions you should include in your Seattle trip itinerary.

Must-see attractions Every city has those iconic, famous landmarks that, like the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the locals allegedly never visit. In Seattle’s case, they are Pike Place Market and the Space Needle, and regardless of what the natives say, you won’t regret a visit to either one. If nothing else, go for the sights and the people-watching at Pike Place Market, the heart of a nine acre historic district in downtown Seattle. It’s famous for its fish throwers, joke-cracking local vendors who toss salmon to each other at the market’s fish stalls. There are also stands selling everything from flowers to vegetables to knick-knacks. Nearby is the original Starbucks; once you’ve tried their coffee, make sure you taste what the locals drink at places like

Vivace, Cafe Ladro and Victrola. The 605-foottall Space Needle was built for the 1962 World’s Fair and still offers an excellent way to see the city from its observation deck. There’s even a restaurant at the top if you want to treat yourself to dinner with a view. Continued on pg. 36

The great outdoors

Art is big in Seattle

To make it easier to enjoy Seattle’s setting on Puget Sound and the views of majestic Mt. Rainier, the city maintains over 400 parks. Two that no visitor should miss are Gas Works Park and Olympic Sculpture Park. The former is an open space near Lake Union built on the site of a former gas plant. It’s a wonderful picture and picnic spot with some unusual architecture. As the name implies, Olympic Sculpture Park has a garden showcasing contemporary sculpture. It’s situated on a seaside bluff, so it’s also wonderful for strolling and enjoying the views of the harbor and mountains.

The city is home to countless galleries, but no visit would be complete without a stop at Chihuly Garden & Glass. Dedicated to showcasing the work of Washington State artist Dave Chihuly, it’s a collection of stunning blown glass exhibits and sculptures, some set in a lush garden setting. Especially impressive is the 40-foot Glass House structure.

By Oscar B. Goodman, Las Vegas Host Committee Chairman

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority(LVCVA) is tasked with promoting our fabulous city as the world’s premier destination for both leisure and business travel. In 2015, Las Vegas welcomed a record-breaking 42.3 million visitors and we are on pace to beat that record in 2016. One of the many benefits of living in Las Vegas is the opportunity to experience world-class entertainment and activities 365 days a year in our own backyard! Year-round sunshine is one of the many reasons Las Vegas is a top travel destination but in the summer, that sun can certainly heat things up! The LVCVA would like to highlight some of our city’s popular attractions locals and tourists can enjoy while beating the summer heat!

Take a Look at Las Vegas History

On June 11th the Las Vegas News Bureau will unveil its newest exhibit at the Nevada State Museum, Las Vegas highlighting an exciting aspect of Las Vegas History. ‘Les Folies Bergère: Entertaining Las Vegas, One Rhinestone at a Time’ explores the beauty, artistry and extravagance of Vegas’ longest running Parisian cabaret show. Included in the exhibit are rarely seen photographs and spectacular stage costumes from the archives at the Las Vegas News Bureau and the Nevada State Museum, Las Vegas. The unique exhibition interprets

The site even pairs parks with unique experiences like kayaking in the desert at Lake Mead National Recreation Area.

AARP Driver Safety is an award-winning program designed to help mature drivers update their knowledge of the latest road rules and stay safer as they drive, through an innovative and engaging classroom course. Cars have changed. So have traffic rules, driving conditions and the roads members travel every day. Some drivers age 50-plus have never looked back since they got their first driver’s license, but even the most experienced drivers can benefit from brushing up on their driving skills. Those who take the Smart Driver course learn the current rules of the road (including some of the quirky new Nevada-specific rules), defensive driving techniques, strategies to avoid distracted driving behaviors, and how to manage common age-related changes in vision, hearing and reaction time. Those over the age of 55 who complete the course are also eligible for a car insurance discount under Nevada law. The amount of discount varies by provider, so students are advised to inquire with their individual insurance company.

There are very uncomfortable place to live and sleep. screens, films, cloths, awnings and all kinds of Fortunately, there are a lot of measures one different reflective materials to keep the heat can take, not only to cool off the house in the out. peak of summer, but save some money as well.

Summer In The Desert

Air Conditioning

Air Conditioning bills can skyrocket in the summer and take up as much as 43% of the utility bill. But cooling off the house is completely necessary to survive in comfort. The first thing to do is to replace and/or maintain the current air conditioning unit. Units in the desert regions can fill up with dirt and start to work improperly. Old units or ones that have fallen into disrepair can use up much more energy than their newer counterparts. Another very simple plan to save energy is to program the thermostat to shut off or raise the temperature while no one is in the home or during the night.

Block Out The Sun

The main reason that houses heat up so much in the summer is because the sun’s rays pour into the windows. There are many ways to block out some of that sun and take some of

54 Simply55+

May/June 2016

Try Some Fans

Ceiling fans or plug-in fans use less energy than a big air-conditioner unit. So if the people in the house are going to be spending a lot of time in one room or sleeping, fans can be a great way to cool off a smaller space. Instead of wasting energy cooling the whole house, the fan can be used to save that energy and to an extent, that money. Plus, fans circulate the air, which is important to keep the interior fresh.

Make A Strategy For Cooking

Cooking a meal or baking in the oven can really heat up the house. In the peak of summer, try eating colder foods like salads, microwaving, or at least using the oven for short times in the evening. A great thing about this strategy is that it also saves on the gas bill or electric bill, depending on what kind of stove is in the house.

Not That Old And Loving It!

Insulate The Attic

Insulation keeps the heat or cold inside the room. A badly insulated attic can let out the valuable cold air that is circulating through the house, especially if the air-conditioning vents are running through the attic. Nearly 40% of the cool air can be lost through faulty or toothin insulation.

Check The Vents And Ducts

Speaking of the attic, if the air ducts and vents run through that spot, they have to be functioning properly as well. Even if the attic is fully insulated, cool air leaking through the ducts would just end up cooling the attic instead of the living spaces of the house. Testing and repairing or replacing the ducting is paramount to not losing the cool air generated by air-conditioners.

Putting It All Together

Combining some or all of these tips together would maximize the cooling power of a desert house while also lowering energy costs. Some of them require a bigger upfront investment, but as the saying goes, “every little bit helps. So even the cheaper options like planting trees from the local nursery or getting some window screens is a smaller investment than replacing a whole air-conditioning unit, but it will still help tremendously in stopping the sunlight in the desert. +

Paint The Exterior A Light Color

Dark colors hold the sunlight and the heat generated, and light colors reflect it. If the exterior of the house gets heated up, the hot temperatures can affect the interior, making a stale, muggy space. Painting the exterior a light color will deflect the sunlight and can lower electric bills by 10 to 20%.

Consider The Roof

Similar to painting the exterior color a lighter shade, having a light-colored roof can also deflect the sun and heat. Desert folk can also invest in a metal roof, which deflects the light even more and lasts virtually forever. The cost would go down not only in the electric bill, but also in roof replacement.

Summer Lawn Care Guide Summer is upon us and more often than not homeowners have no real idea what they need to do to get that perfect summer lawn. Have no fear however, these tips will help you get the perfect lawn each and every time with less effort than you might expect.

Grass Breed The first thing you need to worry about is the breed of the grass that is growing in your lawn. Each breed of grass grows best in a particular area so make sure if you live in a dry climate, you find a grass that is hearty and that can grow with minimal water.

Watering You should also keep in mind that in drier climates you are likely going to need to water your lawn. That being said, you should take care to pay attention to watering guidelines for your area. You may only be able to water a certain amount every week and might have other restrictions to consider. Watering can help keep

your lawn green and lush during hot summer months.

Watering Schedule No matter where you live, but especially in drier areas, you need to make sure that you are watering at the right time of day. Watering during the hottest part of the day is going to basically fry your grass and kill it. Watering after the sun has set or during the overnight hours allows the water the chance to sink into the ground rather than being dried up by the direct rays of the sun.

Fertilizer Drier climates are going to have soil that has less nutrients so fertilizing is a must. Applying fertilizer to your lawn can help to keep it green and can help bring life back to it even after it has started to die off. Make sure you fertilize before it rains as the rainwater will help the fertilizer soak into the ground. Not That Old And Loving It!

Grass Length In wetter climates you can cut your grass relatively short without fear of killing it. In drier climates however it is best to keep your grass bit longer for a few reasons. For starters, longer grass is going to be able to survive the heat better than shorter grass. Another reason is that longer grass is going to have a stronger root system.

Remove Yard Clippings Clippings can cause the grass ben we at to die and struggle to get water. Consider using something like a bagger behind your mower or rake the trimmings to make sure your grass is getting the proper sunlight and water all year round. Removing trimmings also makes your lawn appear greener.

and without violating water restrictions in many cases. You should however take the time to see just what stipulations your area has on rainwater collection.

Remove Invasive Species The last tip you may want to consider is to remove those invasive grass species and plants that are going to smother out your perfect lawn. Things like crab grass and Bermuda grass all tend to spread quickly and smother out grass that is already in your lawn. Take the time to remove these for a perfect lawn. No matter what you do to keep your lawn beautiful this season, just remember, you should be enjoying your time outdoors and a perfect lawn is going to help you do that. +

Weed Prevention Adding solutions to remove weeds may be a great way to get the lawn you want. Weeds have a tendency to creep in no matter how hard you try to avoid them but adding a weed solution may help to remove these pests for a great, green lawn.

Seeding If you do have to add seed to your lawn you should consider what type of seed to add. Using a seed that has a protective jacket or solution added to it to help retain moisture is a great way to make sure your lawn is going to reseed properly.

Rain Water and Run off A great way to save money and to keep your lawn green is to add rainwater collection to your daily routine. Rainwater is going to be a wonderful way to add moisture to your lawn without your having to spend money on water Not That Old And Loving It!

Keep in mind that Social Security is one of the few remaining programs that is indexed for inflation, so giving up that larger payment is even more of a big deal. If you cannot retire without claiming benefits at 62, you might want to work a few years longer and beef up your other savings.

#4. Paying the Minimum on Your Credit Cards

Racking up a lot of credit card debt is one of the biggest financial blunders you can make, and paying the minimum on those credit cards will only make the problem worse. Every month you pay the minimum is one more month interest charges are accruing. That means you are just digging the hole deeper, and it could take you decades to work your way out. If you find yourself in a credit card hole, the first thing you need to do is stop digging. Cut up the cards or put them away and put every extra penny you can toward paying off the balances. Your credit card debt should be a priority, so be sure to treat it that way.

#5. Neglecting Your Education You probably already know that quitting high school will be deadly to your future finances and lifetime earning power, but dropping out of college can be almost as dangerous. Neglecting your education is a big financial mistake, and the implications could follow you throughout your career. Continuing your education can be good for your career, so much so that your employer may be willing to pick up the tab. Ask about tuition reimbursement programs and look for part-time learning opportunities that can advance your career at little to no cost to you. Thanks to the Internet and distance learning, there have never been more ways to get the education you need. No matter who you are or how much you earn, avoiding financial blunders is essential to your long-term well being. When it comes to your finances, sometimes what you don’t do is even more important than what you do. Avoiding the five mistakes listed above can help you make the most of your finances and enjoy a more successful career. +

TOP TEN Summer Activities Spring is flying by and we are getting ready to welcome summer soon. What are you looking forward to this summer? While the mercury may be rising, there are activities that have always been a rite of passage during the summer months. Here are our top ten summer activities we are looking forward to!

1. Road Trip! – While the temps rise here in the desert, take a fun road trip, hopefully somewhere cooler, perhaps Seattle, or maybe the beach?

2. Outdoor Plays – Visit Spring Mountain Ranch’s Supper Summer Theater (www.supersummertheatre.org) or take a drive to visit Cedar City’s Utah Shakespeare Festival (www.bard.org) - both offer outdoor plays under the stars.

3. Family Reunion – When school is out, plan a super fun family reunion so everyone can get together and catch up on all the happenings in everyone’s lives over the past year.

4. Summer Reading – Though we love reading year round, maybe mix it up over the summer – try reading a different genre or perhaps joining a book club.

5. Camping – Head up to the mountains and camp!

If tent camping isn’t your style, then renting a cabin or maybe a RV will do as well. Just don’t forget the s’mores while you are sitting around the campfire.

6. Homemade Ice Cream – Need I say more? 7. Barbecue – Invite the family and friends and have an old-fashioned barbecue – don’t forget to bring some homemade ice cream!

8. Take your boat out or rent a pontoon boat on Lake Mead – cooling off in the lake is a great way to spend a summer day!

9. Hiking in Mt. Charleston – plan a day trip to escape the Las Vegas heat and go hiking in the mountains!

10. Relax – put up a hammock or get a super comfy lounge chair for your backyard and after the sun goes down, make the time to sit back and simply relax.
