When thinking of 4th of July, Apple Pie immediately pops into my mind!!! A favorite of my husband Feedback (I always have to make him his very own pie – he is not one for sharing) it is made completely from scratch including the piecrust. Let me tell you…soooo delicious! In keeping with our 4th of July theme, I’ve used a small pastry star cutter, and cut out stars on the top piecrust, wasting nothing, I used the cutouts and placed them around the piecrust giving it a very festive appearance. Remembering Nevada Happy Holidays Veteran Show Producer Norbert Aleman Continues His Long Career www.mikehenle.com

Show producer Norbert Aleman has been riding a wave in Southern Nevada since 1979. In a business that sees shows come and go on a continual basis, the 74 year-old native of Morocco, has led the cycle of entertainment since Sept. 25, 1987 when “Crazy Girls” first appeared at the Riviera Hotel & Casino. Not one to sit on his hands, Aleman is still going strong in a career that produced good times along with an assortment of challenges along the way. To call Aleman a survivor might even be an understatement. His old stomping grounds at the Riviera were recently demolished while his show continues, this time at Planet Hollywood, also on the Las Vegas Strip. A resident or Las Vegas since 1985, Aleman struck gold in a city known for people taking chances. The colorful Aleman is used to the ups and downs of life, and seems to thrive on his next step. He became a full contact karate champion in 1959, and joined the French Foreign Legion as a mercenary before going on to manage and produce shows for French singing sensations. It’s been a whirlwind career for a man who admits he has had the good life along with a few bumps in the road at the same time. Crazy

Girls is now in its 29th year, and Aleman said the show’s dancers are the perfect testament to a dedicated teamwork effort. “Creation is a good test,” explained, Aleman, who has also worked as a stunt man in a Charles Bronson movie. “As a producer, we must take care of our performers. The girls stay young so that we’re able to present a show that is done correctly and has good quality.” With huge competition on the Las Vegas Strip, Aleman continues to draw well as he continues his career. “Show biz keeps me young,” said Aleman, who formerly danced in the Lido de Parise in Paris. “I live a clean life and have been rewarded for that. In a stunning comparison, many of the younger generations of entertainment have fallen due to drugs or other related setbacks. “We’re the longest-running burlesque show in the country,” Aleman says in a matter-of-fact analogy. “You cannot give up in this business.” When the Riviera was closed, Aleman knew the challenges to find a new home were going to Continued on pg. 26

be challenging, but he didn’t have an idea that a related setback literally put the skids on the show for a brief time. “When we moved from the Riviera, our truck (and trailer) was stolen,” said Aleman while adding yet another element to the definition of another uphill climb. “We lost all of our costumes and props when that happened last March. The truck was found, but the content wasn’t found.” The theft also resulted in the loss of other important content including wigs and shoes. In total, Aleman said the theft resulted in a loss of about $225,000, all of which had to be replaced quickly if the show as to continue its long-running history.

“We lost everything,” Aleman recalls of the fire. “We had memories from France in the house.” Meanwhile, the history of Crazy Girls has an impressive list of viewers including Prince Albert, Nicolas Cage, Tom Cruise, Magic Johnson, Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci and Tom Jones, among others.

For a man who has been an actor, a stuntman, record producer and producer and promoter for concerts, the result has been a long and storied career in a very tough business. The move to Planet Hollywood has been a good one, too. “The Sin City Theatre had a major overhaul for Crazy Girls to perform there,” Aleman said “Planet Hollywood is the perfect combination of classic Vegas and modern edgy Las Vegas that truly represents Crazy Girls past, present and future.” Aleman’s Crazy Girl show has been highlighted in Hong Kong, Tokyo, Australia, Monte Carlo and France.

Aleman said the move to Planet Hollywood was delayed by only a week although the new show had to be redone totally.

Meanwhile, Aleman also has other plans that will take him out of the country to a new venture in Mexico.

“We closed the Riviera and started at Planet Hollywood May 21,” said Aleman, whose setbacks also included a tragic house fire in the hills of Los Angeles in 1977.

“I’m going to retire when Crazy Girls turns 30 years of age,” Aleman said. “My wife, Jennifer, will still run the show, but I’m going to build a casino with a partner in Cabo San Lucas.” +

Where To Begin – The Process: Step #1: If a veteran’s injury was service connected, but not directly caused by the enemy, then unfortunately he or she isn’t eligible. However, if he or she does meet the initial criteria, the first step is to write a personal narrative, which must include the applicant’s name and rank at the top of the page and a description of when the injury occurred, including date, time, and location. If medical care was provided on scene or at a later time, even after the deployment, be sure to include this in the summary. Also include an explanation as to why medical treatment was not sought or administered immediately if necessary. Step #2: Acquire two eyewitness-sworn statements. A veteran may still submit a package with only one, but most successful applications come after two or more supporting accounts testify to the applicant’s injury. These must be typed and written on “Form DA 2823” or a Word document with date and signature. Step #3: Obtain a situation or casualty report from the military. If the injury occurred on the battlefield, there should be something in writing that either lists the injured person by name or describes the incident. Occasionally, this is the greatest obstacle to overcome as these reports can be classified, especially for veterans who served during Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) in Iraq & Afghanistan. Step #4: Gather relevant medical documentation that shows a diagnosis from combat injury. This would include documentation from an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast, a Pre/Post-deployment Health Assessment, clinic referrals, Not That Old And Loving It!

neuropsychological evaluations, or anything that connects the injury with a combat event. Step #5: Provide a copy of the deployment orders received at the time the applicant was activated or called to travel overseas. Only the orders for the deployment where the applicant was injured are relevant. Step #6: If the applicant was awarded a certificate, summary of action, or has a form that proves the veteran received a Combat Action Ribbon or Combat Action Badge, include it as well. Step #7: Acquire the most recent Enlisted Record Brief, Officer Record Brief, or Master Brief Sheet. If not readily available, this can be found on Army Knowledge Online (www.us.army.mil), Marine Online (www.mol.usmc.mil), or Navy Knowledge Online (www.nko.navy.mil). For Air Force questions refer to Human Resources Command at www.us.army.mil. Step #8: ALWAYS make copies, then mail (certified with return receipt for tracking of your package) all of the above in a parcel to: U.S. Army Human Resources Command Attn: AHRC-PDP-A 1600 Spearhead Division Avenue Fort Knox, KY 40122 For more detailed information, please go to: www.hrc.army.mil/awards. Note: All Purple Heart applications are submitted to the U.S. Army no matter what military branch of service you served. If help is needed when compiling these important pieces of evidence, please consider consulting with a qualified Veterans Service Officer in your area. Road Trip to Yellowstone National Park With over 3,500 square miles of ruggedly pristine North American wilderness, Yellowstone National Park is the perfect place for a memorable adventure. It was established as the world’s first National Park in 1872, when Congress voted to help preserve the natural scenery and wildlife of the area while putting the unique geothermic features on display

to the public. Nowadays, the park averages 3.5 million visitors each year. The worldfamous wilderness and recreation area sits directly on top of a volcanic hot spot and spreads throughout Wyoming and into parts of Montana and Idaho. Fans of wide-open spaces will certainly feel at home here, and the nature of Yellowstone’s location makes it the ideal Not That Old And Loving It!

road trip destination for campers, RV drivers, and back seat snoozers, alike.

Natural Wonders Because of its seemingly infinite size, it should come as no surprise that Yellowstone is covered with top of the line scenic diversity. Lush green forests lead to dramatic basalt columns, with so much more in between. Ice cold alpine rivers directly contrast the steaming hot springs and powerful geysers. Perhaps one of the best parts, though, is that all of this sits under the mesmerizing twinkle of stars in an unobstructed sky. These elements make Yellowstone truly unique compared to other recreation areas and National Parks. In fact, it has been officially named one of the Seven Natural Wonders of North America.

Wildlife Dense forestry and untarnished wilderness certainly give heed to an abundance of wildlife, some of which most people would actively try to avoid. The park boasts the highest concentration of animals in the continental U.S., with at least 61 different types of mammals present. Common animals to sight on a trip to Yellowstone include bears, wolves, moose, deer, bison, badgers, antelope, otters and foxes, to name just a few. park home, as do over 500 grizzly bears. These bears are typically the most sought after (from a distance) wildlife “attraction” in the park. Visitors are most likely to see them at dusk and dawn in the Hayden and Lamar Valleys. Although they are spotted rarely, wolverine and lynx have been observed in the park before, as well.

Park Highlights Old Faithful Geyser is undeniably the most popular attraction in Yellowstone. If crowds are not your thing, it’s probably best to view this powerful geyser early in the morning, before the rest of country comes out to marvel at it. Unfortunately, there’s no real way to time your visit; you’ll just have to sit and wait if you are unlucky. However, it is definitely worth the wait. Although it’s not as big as the one in Arizona, the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is nonetheless breathtaking. At twenty miles long and 4,000 feet wide, this canyon has innumerable vantage points for people of a wide wide range of fitness levels. Make The Most of Your Summer Happy Holidays

By Oscar B. Goodman, Las Vegas Host Committee Chairman

Summer is upon us and for many, the season is associated with road trips, barbeques, county fairs and carnivals. Here in Las Vegas, there’s no shortage of entertainment and events to enjoy. In particular, Las Vegas is looking forward to hosting a unique type of carnival this summerthe- Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC)! Hundreds of thousands of electronic-dance music fans are expected to flock to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway June 17-19 for the return of this iconic festival. Be sure to welcome these visitors as they celebrate the 20th anniversary of this event. Las Vegas is also a hot spot for sports fans this month. On June 22, the National Hockey League (NHL) will host the 2016 NHL Awards at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. This will mark the seventh time the NHL honors its top players and performances with an event in Las Vegas. In addition, Encore at Wynn Las Vegas will serve as NHL Headquarters during the 2016 NHL Awards, providing plenty of opportunities for athletes and fans to celebrate the end of the season. The summer of 2016 will also be remembered as an important time in Las Vegas history with the demolition of the Riviera. The LVCVA

42 Simply55+

recently signed a contract for the Riviera demolition to occur in phases and incorporates a number of tactics, including the implosion of two towers in June and August 2016, respectively. This will make room for new exhibit space to maintain Las Vegas’ reputation as the top destination for business travel. The Riviera demolition will bring forth the future of the Las Vegas Convention Center District (LVCCD)-a transformative project that will redefine the destination and launch Las Vegas 25 years ahead of the competition. The LVCCD project is critical to Nevada because the convention piece of the tourism business is a major contributor to the state’ s economy. In Southern Nevada, the industry contributes more than $9.3 billion to the local economy and supports 54,000 local jobs and $2.7 billion in local wages and salaries. One meeting of about 50,000 attendees generates about $70 million in economic activity. We’ll be sure to update our ambassadors as the project progresses. Las Vegas hosted 54 of the 250 largest trade shows in the country in 2015! Nearly 1.3 million visitors attended an event at the Las Vegas Convention Center in 2015. This accounts for 22 percent of Southern Nevada’s total Not That Old And Loving It!

convention attendance, securing Las Vegas’ rank as the No. 1 trade show destination in North America for the 22nd consecutive year. It’s crucial that we stay a step ahead of the competition and continue to provide our customers with a business environment which meets the changing demands and opportunities of a very dynamic industry. Don’t forget to mark your calendars for October 19. That’s when Las Vegas will play host to the final 2016 Presidential Debate before the election. UNLV partnered with the LVCVA to submit a bid to serve as one of four host cities for a debate. This is the first time a city and university have joined forces to attract a presidential debate. High-profile events like this one will help demonstrate that Las Vegas is not only a great place to visit, but a serious place to do business. Not That Old And Loving It!

You can stay up-to-date on the latest events and announcements by becoming a Las Vegas Host Committee ambassador. Once you sign up, we will provide details of special events and other important tourism-related initiatives. Anyone from the community can become an ambassador by registering on our website, www.lvcva.com/host, or emailing our office at lvhostcommittee@lvcva.com. It costs nothing to become a Host Committee ambassador other than your commitment to better our community. Making Las Vegas a better place to visit also makes it a better place to live! +

Top Phishing Scams on Social Media AARP Fraud Watch Network Happy Holidays

Phishing attempts on social media have more than doubled over the past year as scammers find new ways to trick people into providing personal and financial information. During the first quarter of 2016, ploys to glean log-in credentials, credit card and other ID-worthy information soared 150 percent over the same period in 2015, according to Proofpoint, which provides social media security services to leading companies and nearly 225 million of their individual followers on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, Instagram and Pinterest. The current reigning ruses: 1. Impostor customer care: Cybercrooks create fake customer service accounts, via slight keyboard tweaks (say, an extra underscore or character), to intercept messages tweeted to banks, e-commerce or video game producers and phish for login and financial account information. “The consumer poses a question to a support site and within minutes receives a response (from an impostor account) providing a link to a solution, which, of course, is also a fake,” notes Devin Redmond, vice president of social media security and compliance at Proofpoint. “The customer not only expects the response, he or she welcomes it and has incentive to follow the link.” If you

52 Simply55+

choose to use social media customer care, be sure to look for the “verified” logo in all communications. 2. Live-stream lures: The bait is phony comments and promises of live video streams of popular events, such as a big football game or boxing match available only in certain markets or on pay-per-view. The hook? Links that lead to scammer-run websites, where there’s no sneak peek, only an attempt to get personal and credit card details, often under the guise of a fake free trial. 3. Fake freebies and discounts: Con artists set up legitimate-looking social media accounts that claim to offer free or dirt-cheap products and services. It’s easy pickings for swindlers to collect names, addresses, phone numbers, emails and other information that they can use for identity theft or to sell on the black market, along with credit cards “required” for shipping and handling charges. 4. Contest cons and survey swindles: In this oldie but goodie, fraudsters post promises of a prize for completing a survey, but the goal is to mine personal information. Crooks’ posts and links appear authentic with URL shorteners. Not That Old And Loving It!

5. Gossip gotchas: Search terms of celebrity names, coupled with terms such as “video” and “picture,” have long been among the internet’s most typed — and most dangerous for malware. The latest celeb-centric scheme: links that promise illicit videos of Hollywood elite, sports superstars and other household names. Along with malware, many phish for credit card info. For information about other scams, sign up for the AARP Fraud Watch Network. You’ll receive free email alerts with tips and resources to help you spot and avoid identity theft and fraud, and gain access to a network of experts, law enforcement and people in your community who will keep you up to date on the latest scams in your area. 15 Easy Ways to Save Money

Calendar Of Events

Calendar Of Events Because we’re living longer these days, turning 55 and officially becoming a “senior citizen” doesn’t have the impact it onceRemembering had. However,Nevada because normal retirement is only a decade away, it is a good time to evaluate your financial situation towards retiring. Have you saved and invested as much as you need to enjoy the Golden Years in comfort? Or, Happy Holidays as many discover, are you lacking those planned funds and realizing you’ll probably have to cut back on your lifestyle after retirement and get by on a fixed income of Social Security and pension benefits. If so, why not use the coming summer months as a dress rehearsal for that reduced income and come up with a variety of ways to cut back and save money?

Here are 15 suggestions to make that happen:

1.

2.

3.

Grocery shop only once a week. Not only do you save gasoline, but you’ll find yourself having to plan meals in advance. This is good for the budget because you’ll limit impulse buys. And most major grocery stores had a “senior day” each week with a senior discount. Partner-up on groceries – Find a neighbor or friend willing to go in a on buying bulk grocery items with you. Stores like Costco had great prices but sell items in large sizes and containers. Split the items up and get the lower price per item discount. Partner up on Vacations -It’s often possible to get discounted lodging and

meal prices by traveling with another couple or two. This lowers your per-person travel cost and will give you an idea of what it would be like to travel with others once you are retired.

4.

Take advantage of senior discountsThere’s a reason Denny’s restaurants are crowed between 4:00 and 6:00 PM. Retired people are there to enjoy dining on a special menu designed for seniors are reduced rates. And don’t hesitate to ask for a senior discount at stores, markets and other venues

5.

Go for Netflix and Television for your movie entertainment. A month of Netflix movies cost less than one movie theater ticket with popcorn. With hundreds of movies at your viewing pleasure whenever Not That Old And Loving It!

you want, it’s hard to justify the high price of theater tickets any more.

6.

7.

8.

9.

Shop for lower interest rates. Make a summer project of examining your credit cards and outstanding loans and see if you can find other lenders or if you can re-negotiate better interest rates. It only takes one success story to pay off in substantial savings. Quit buying books. Your local library is the best bargain in town. Why spend $25 or more on a current best-seller when you can get a copy free? You might have to wait for a copy to become available, but so what? And don’t forget that most libraries now offer eBooks, audio downloads and streaming videos for their customers. Unplug and save. Believe it or not, most electronic devices use some power even when you’re not using them. Make a list of those devices you can unplug and not interrupt your daily and pull the plug. Turn off air conditioning in unused rooms. No one is suggesting that you turn the thermostat up and swelter through the hot months of summer. But there’s no reason to keep the spare bedrooms and unused bathrooms cool.

10. Use programmable thermostats. Along

the lines of minimizing the use of your AC units, install thermostats that you can program at a higher temperature setting at nights while you’re sleep.

Not That Old And Loving It!

11. Combine your home phone with cellular service. Do you really need landline phone service anymore? Evaluate what it would be like to use your cell phone for your only phone and eliminate the monthly phone company bill.

12. Shop Generic- Go for the generic store brands when you shop. Many times the generic brand foods are exactly the same as the nationally advertised and more expensive band label containers. The same applies to prescriptions.

13. Create your own birthday cards. Does your five-year old granddaughter really need a $7.00 talking Hallmark card? She’ll probably get more fun out of receiving a handmade card from you that is personalized just for her. There’s no doubt you can save money over the summer by following this program.

14. Change you drinking habits. The cost of cola drinks and bottled water can add up over time. Tap water and ice cubes are practically free and will quince your thirst just as well. Try brewing a large pitcher of sun tea for pennies per serving to add some variety to your drink menu.

15. Barter for goods. Before you go out and

buy a new washing machine this summer, consider looking for someone willing to barter a good machine for something you have and don’t need anymore. The internet is a perfect tool for finding barter pals. Craigslist accounts are available in most areas and have complete classified ad sections for bartering.
