life for our residents,” said Mayor Hafen. Henderson did this, in part, by creating 184 miles of dedicated biking trails, separated from roadways—which means you can bike on the trails and not have to worry about cars. Henderson also created a Bicycle Advisory Committee that meets monthly to discuss how the city can better the biking community. They even went so far as to install a bicycle work station on the River Mountains Loop trail where you can fill low tires or perform simple maintenance. Henderson’s commitment to the cycling community is evident, and we get to reap the rewards. So how does one become a Bicycle Friendly Community? According to the League of American Bicyclists Vice President of Programs Bill Nesper, the group judges the city in five key areas: education, engineering, encouragement, planning, and evaluation. “Only 40 percent of the cities that apply receive any kind of designation,” Nesper told the Las Vegas Review Journal. “It’s not a gimme.” Both Henderson and Las Vegas are dedicated to bicycling. Following the guidelines of the League of American Bicyclists, they have “made bicycling safe, comfortable, and convenient for people of all ages and abilities.” Not to be outdone, Las Vegas has developed an online resource called Neon to Nature that helps you find bicycling trails throughout Not That Old And Loving It!

Southern Nevada. Each trail in the program has a colorful circular marker with the words “Neon to Nature” and the mile designation right on the trail. Available also as a free app, Neon to Nature is the place to find information such as a description of the trail, the length of the trail, and various amenities—like where to find restrooms. The trend is catching on all across Nevada. While our state ranking is currently 31 out of 50, we are continuing to rise in the rankings. We have 5 Bicycle Friendly communities, 12 Bicycle Friendly businesses, and 1 Bicycle Friendly university. All of this begs the question, why aren’t you riding? Why aren’t you, your friends, and your family taking advantage of the trails that both Las Vegas and Henderson have worked so very hard to create? Whether you prefer to ride a road bike, a mountain bike, or an urban bike, we’ve got the trails for you. So come on, let’s go ride a bike! + Paul W. The RivieraHappy joins Holidays the long list of imploded hotels, but no one can erase its history www.mikehenle.com

Las Vegas News Bureau

The Riviera Hotel has followed the same path a other hotel casinos in Las Vegas. The only slight difference is that unlike most demolitions, it’s taking two implosions to remove the iconic resort from the face of the Las Vegas Strip. Long-time residents of Las Vegas have grown accustomed to implosions dating back to the time in the 1990s when Steve Wynn dropped the old Dunes Hotel to its knees Oct. 27, 1993. Ever the showman, Wynn’s included pyrotechnics to eliminate the Dunes while signaling the beginning of the all- new Las Vegas.

The Bellagio’s dancing waters replaced the Dunes marking the beginning of an all-new Las Vegas. In what has almost become an accepted form of change, implosions have included the erasing of the Landmark (1995), the Sands, the Castaways and the Hacienda (all in 1996), the Not That Old And Loving It!

Aladdin (1998), the El Rancho (2000), Bourbon Street (2006) and the Stardust (2007). The Desert Inn “bought the dust” with dual implosions (1993-2001-04) making way for Wynn’s Wynn Las Vegas. Southern Nevada’s elimination of old buildings seems to support the belief that rather than save anything in ‘Vegas, we simply blow it up. Las Vegas continues to draw record numbers of visitors each year, and one of the biggest reasons might be because many visitors enjoy seeing what has changed in the past two or three months. So when it was announced that the 2,075 room Riviera was about to be closed and erased like an old bad habit in May of 2015, the response barely drew a whimper. The only Not That Old And Loving It!

real question was what would replace the hotel casino, which in its day attracted everyone from high school students looking for a place to swim to high-rollers, members of the Mob and entertainers. What might have made the Riviera’s implosion different than the others was that two implosions were scheduled rather than the traditional one-and-done effort. The other is scheduled in August marking the official end to a 60-plus year existence. The Riviera was the first high-rise to open on the Strip April 20, 1955. Actress Joan Crawford served as the official hostess for the hotel’s grand opening for the hotel, whose minority owners included singer Dean Martin along with Harpo and Gummo Marx of the Marx Brothers. The casino opened with famed pianist Liberace, who was then the highest-paid entertainer on the Las Vegas Strip making $50,000 per week. Other entertainers who performed at the Riviera in the 1950s included Milton Berle, Mickey Rooney and Shecky Green.

The Riviera never ran short of attention-generating public relations. Publicist and entertainer director Tony Zoppi churned out endless press releases under the theme “Copy by Zoppi.”

The 1960s featured entertainment by Louie Armstrong, Tony Bennett, George Burns, Red Buttons and Barbara Streisand while the 1970s saw Don Rickles, Dean Martin, Steve Martin, Burt Bacharach, George Carlin, Phyllis Diller, Liza Minnelli and Jimmy Walker.

Before joining the Riviera, Zoppi wrote a column called “Dallas After Dark” for the Dallas Morning News. According to The Hollywood Reporter, he wrote about Dallas strip-club owner Jack Ruby, who become known for shooting Lee Harvey Oswald, who assassinated U.S. President John F. Kennedy in Dallas on Nov. 22, 1963.

Barbara Streisand made her debut at the hotel in 1970 and comedian Don Rickles left the Sahara for the Riviera a few years later. The 1980s included Joan Rivers, David Brenner and the Village People while the 1990s saw Frank Sinatra, Drew Carey, the Beach Boys and Pauly Shore. The Riviera also hosted various athletic events including boxing matches that included heavyweight champion Larry

Interestingly, the land where the Riviera was built is about to become the home of the Las Vegas Convention Authority. Land in the area is also a possible site for a 65,000-seat football domed stadium that would be home for the Oakland Raiders along with the UNLV Rebels. The possibility caught McDonald’s attention considering the past history of football in Las Vegas. McDonald remembers when the ill-fated Las Vegas Posse of the Canadian Football League was founded in 1994 before folding the same year. “The players stayed at the Riviera and the hotel built a practice field for them behind the hotel,” recalled McDonald. For sure, changes are continuous in Las Vegas especially with the ever-present implosions the city has experienced. +

officials put a freeze on routine disposal of records in case they could be used to reconstruct veterans’ personal records. While excavating the heavily damaged sixth floor, the recovery team discovered water had managed to preserve the bottom row of records and files that had fallen into the aisles from partially burnt boxes above. The use of new technology, like digital imaging, now makes it possible to piece together damaged records that were believed to be lost to the fire. How should you get started? Complete the Standard Form 180 (SF-180). Because an original signature is required before a request will be processed, I recommend mailing the hard copy to NPRC at: 1 Archives Drive St. Louis, Missouri 63138. Remember to make a photocopy for your files and make sure to mail it “certified” so that you are able to track your application. In addition, be sure to tell the NPRC why you need this information.

Don’t be discouraged if you receive a response letter from the NPRC that states your records were “lost in the fire of 1973.” If you don’t send an inquiry to NPRC, they will remain unaware that your records need reconstructing. If you sent an inquiry for your records long ago with no success, try again. The best advice I can give is to never give up searching for your military records. If NPRC cannot find your records, there are still other places within the National Archives and Records Administration and the VA that may have what you need to verify your military service and bring you the peace of mind you deserve. +

Tips on Keeping your House Cool Remembering Nevada During the Hot Summer Months Happy Holidays In summer, your air conditioner will probably work overtime to keep you cool. There are other ways you can keep your home even cooler and feel more comfortable while saving on your cooling bills. Here are some of the best tips for beating the heat this summer.

Create a Breeze

Using fans, especially ceiling fans, makes everyone feel cooler. It won’t decrease the actual temperature in your home, but it will make you feel cooler by helping your perspiration evaporate.

Add Arbors

As the sun’s hot rays strike your windows and exterior walls, your home absorbs a lot of that heat. In summer, this means your home can heat up very fast, especially if you lack shade trees on the south or west facing sides. Tall arbors covered in vines offer natural and attractive shade to alleviate some of the sun’s impact. Whether arbors are the right method for you to use will depend on several things, including your home’s external architecture.

54 Simply55+

July/August 2016

Create a Vertical Garden Wall

An alternative similar to using arbors is to create a vertical exterior garden wall. Unless you are handy with tools, it’s best to purchase these premade and hang them on the outside of the home. Vertical gardens are best used on walls rather than for covering a window, and so you will still need to find shading for windows. If you do use a vertical garden in front of a window, make sure you leave enough space to exit the home in case of fire.

Install Awnings

Retractable awnings are an easy way to create shade, and they can be left in place all year long. Many of the top models have a remote control feature, which means that you can extend or retract the awning at the push of a button.

Use Patio Umbrellas

This cooling solution is best for homes with south-facing windows that overlook a patio. Placed close enough to the home, patio umbrellas can offer some temporary shade to walls and windows. This solution is most Not That Old And Loving It!

suitable if the side of your home facing the south or west happens to be the backyard or a side yard.

in the oven. Instead, stick with foods you can quickly heat in the microwave or on the range. Better yet, cook outdoors when you can.

Install Shutters

Ventilate the Attic

Use Heat-Reducing Window Dressings

Add Attic Insulation

Shutters are available in many materials, such as wood, aluminum or vinyl. If you use wood shutters, any color is fine, but if you choose metal shutters, make sure they are a bright color to reflect heat since darker metal will heat up and partially defeat the purpose.

Indoors cover your windows with insulating draperies. You can find these at most home retail stores. They are often labeled as energyefficient or blackout curtains.

Reduce Humidity

Humidity will make your home feel hotter no matter what the thermostat reads as the actual temperature. Using a dehumidifier will go a long way towards making your home feel cooler, but you can also take other steps. These include using fans to keep air flowing, using your washing machine and dishwasher only at night and using exhaust fans to draw humid air out of bathrooms and the kitchen.

Unplug Electronics

Most people get into the habit of leaving the television and other electronic items on and plugged in. This uses extra electricity and it adds heat to the home. It might not seem like much heat, but it does add up. Try to remember to turn off and unplug items such as toasters, computers and the television set when you aren’t using them.

Avoid Using the Oven

The oven heats up the kitchen fast and this heat doesn’t have anywhere to go but to the rest of the house. In summer, avoid cooking Not That Old And Loving It!

The hot air building up in your attic needs somewhere to go or it will radiate through the ceiling, joists and walls and increase your home’s temperature. Have an HVAC professional come out to inspect your attic to ensure that the ventilation system is functioning properly.

Another important feature of the attic is insulation. If your attic doesn’t have enough insulation, the heat will transfer easily into your home through your ceiling. Call an insulation professional to check your existing insulation and add new insulation if necessary.

Prevent Hot Air from Entering

When you open a door, it isn’t so much that cool air rushes out but that hot air rushes in. This is because heat is attracted to cold and seeks to displace it. If your home has many gaps and cracks between the indoors and exterior, more hot air can enter and make your home feel warmer in summer. The best way to handle this is to look for sources of these leaks, which can include foundation cracks and loose seals around doorframes, and seal them. The more you can create shade, reduce indoor humidity and avoid gaining heat through air leaks, the cooler your home will be. Permanent solutions that last from year to year are best because they relieve you of concerns about next summer. However, until you can get permanent installations, such as awnings and ceiling fans, use quick methods, such as window dressings and floor fans, to keep your home cooler this summer. +

Going Back to College in your Golden Years

Remembering Nevada

Happy Holidays

It is never too late to go back to college. Across the country, thousands of people in their golden years are heading back to the classroom and beginning a journey that will put their dreams within reach. Here are the best tips for going back to college in your golden years.

Tip #1: Find Motivation Going back to school can be a huge challenge but, infinitely worth while. Going back to college can mean better career opportunities, self-confidence, fulfillment, and more. Before you begin your college experience, do some deep soul searching and find out why you really want to do this. Hang on to this motivation throughout your college experience. This motivation can help you truly celebrate the victories, and can push you through your challenges.

Tip #2: Look Into Financial Aid Right now there is a huge amount of financial aid available to the older generation of students. Grants, loans, scholarships and more are specifically available to you to help you get the education you’ve always wanted, and to help you achieve all of your goals.

56 Simply55+

July/August 2016

Do some research on the financial aid available to you and choose the best option for you, your school, and your family.

Tip #3: Special Programs Offered Some schools, states, or employers have special programs available to those willing to take that plunge and go back to school. For example, some hospitals will pay for their techs, and CNA’s to go to school to become nurses. Some private and charter schools will pay for part or all of the cost for teachers to go get their masters or to certify in other curriculum fields. Ask your employer if there is a program available to you to advance your career. Some colleges offer the older generations of students a discount for taking certain types of classes. Tip #4: Look Into the Benefits Looking into the specific benefits of going to college can actually help you form your specific goals. Some of the universal benefits of going back to school are more job security, possible increase in annual salary after graduation, better job and career opportunities, and a new sense of self-confidence. Look into the benefits you’re trying to obtain by going to college. This will help you choose things like the type of college you attend, the degree you choose, and your major or emphasis of study.

Tip #5: Research Types of Schools Online universities, state colleges, traditional universities, and community colleges all offer different education opportunities that meet different needs and have different benefits. Choosing the right one for you can optimize your education experience and help you succeed.

Online Universities

Totally online universities are available so you can study at home, on the road, or wherever your life takes you. Schedules are more flexible with online universities, and sometimes tuition costs are lower. The drawback of an online university is that there usually aren’t scheduled lectures where you discuss the topic with a large group of students. Because everything is online, face-toface interaction is non-existent.

State Colleges

State colleges offer a more traditional college experience while being a bit less expensive than a major university. You are offered a good Not That Old And Loving It!

education for a good price, and online and oncampus classes are generally available so, you can customize an education that is right for you.

Community Colleges

Community colleges offer you a good education at a fraction of the price, with class schedules quite similar to traditional state colleges. The drawback of a community college is that there are fewer majors available than other education options, and graduate degree options are even lower. Many people attend state colleges to obtain their general education requirements before moving on to a university or state college because it is less expensive and sometimes less rigorous. Some people love state colleges for obtaining trade certifications as well.

Universities

Major universities are much more expensive than state and community colleges but, they tend to offer the most bachelors, masters, and PhD degrees and offer an unbeatable education. Major universities also offer a true college experience, and offer great support for students through advisers, counseling centers, and more. Students who graduate from major universities are sometimes given the advantage in future employment opportunities. Your college experience can make a major difference for the rest of your life, and starting now is easier than ever. Going back to school is worth the effort and the cost to give you the education you deserve, and to set you up for the career opportunities of your dreams. +

Top Ten Dangers to Your Dog During the Summer Summer opens up a lot of things for dog owners to do. However, responsible dog owners should be aware of the dangers that the season can bring to their pets.

1. Sunburn

Dogs can get sunburned, just like people. Light-colored dogs and dogs with thin fur are at high risk of sunburn. If your dog likes to stay outside, make sure that you give them a healthy application of sunscreen. If you can’t find sunscreen that’s formulated for dogs, you can opt to use one that is formulated for babies.

2. Heat Stroke

Heat stroke occurs if your pet’s body temperature gets too high. Keep an eye out for this condition if your dog is hyperactive in the heat. Make sure that they’ve got some shade to play in if they want to stay outside. Needless to say, you must also avoid leaving your dog in the car. A cracked window will not provide enough ventilation to cool the car’s interior.

3. Barbecues

Dogs are man’s best friend, but even a welltrained dog may go after unattended food. Food on the barbecue, for example, might look particularly appetizing to a hungry dog. Retrieving food from a dog can be an incredible task, especially if they think that you’re trying to play with them. Even after you’re done cooking, a dog might decide that any meat on the barbecue is worth going after, which is dangerous if you used lighter fluid. It is generally best to keep dogs away from barbecues, unless you keep them on a short leash.

4. Chlorine

While swimming can be both fun and healthy for the dog, you need to make sure that you wash your dog after it goes in the pool. Chlorine is a skin irritant and can upset their stomach. If it looks like your dog’s drinking a lot from the pool, take it out of the water.

5. Hot Streets

Patios, streets, sand, and sidewalks, can all hurt your dog’s feet. During the summer, it is Not That Old And Loving It!

recommended that you walk them early in the morning or at night, when these surfaces are cool. If you’re not sure whether it’s safe or not, press your palm against the floor for thirty seconds. If it hurts you, it will hurt your dog.

has an eye on it at all times. Your dog should also have a collar with your contact information to maximize the odds of recovery should the worst happen.

6. Dehydration

Summer is full of allergens, including flowers, fleas, and mold. These can all cause itchiness, discomfort, sneezing, and coughing. Keep an eye out for these allergens and make sure that your dog stays away from them. Consult your veterinarian and ask if you need to have antihistamines or medication on hand.

Dehydration can be easily prevented by making sure that your dog has easy access to cool water, both inside and outside your house. Wet dog food, ice cubes, and beef broth can all help keep your dog hydrated.

7. Fireworks

Fireworks are dangerous to dogs in a number ways. Many fireworks either look like or are attached to sticks, which might convince a curious dog to pick one up and play with it. Fireworks going off can startle and leave your dog anxious and afraid. It’s generally a good idea to keep your dogs away from fireworks. If they have to be in the area, keep them on a short leash.

8. Getting Lost

Taking your dog on long trips may result in many fond memories, but it can also result in them getting lost in unfamiliar territory. If your dog is off leash, make sure that someone

9. Allergies

10. Parasitic Infestations

Mosquitoes, flies, ticks, and other insects can infest your home and your dog during the summer months. Your veterinarian should be able to recommend protection appropriate to your dog and your situation. While these concerns are not exclusive to summertime, their dangerous are heightened during the season. You should also consider your dog’s behavior. If your dog likes to stay indoors, you won’t have to worry about any problems with hot sidewalks. Don’t be afraid to let your dog have fun, but it is only responsible to stay aware of what dangerous are present. +

Your Letters Calendar Of Events

Hi, As always, the most recent issue of Simply55+ was excellent. I always keep the “hiking” articles, Remembering Nevada and try to do the various hikes before our friends from Texas come out this way so I’m ready with suggestions when they get here.

Happy Holidays I do have to ask who “actually” submitted the Harry Reid article this month. It couldn’t have come from him because it was actually good – totally out of character from the partisan drivel that he usually puts out. Wayne -Thanks for the feedback Wayne! Glad you are enjoying Branch’s monthly hike suggestions, he will definitely keep those coming. We receive Harry Reid’s articles from his staff, not sure if he writes those personally. June 6, 2016 Dear Simply 55+, First of all I want to compliment you on having a great magazine. As residents of Boulder City since 1977, it’s the first magazine devoted entirely to pertinent things in Southern Nevada and surrounding area for seniors we have seen and truly enjoyed. Please help me with one thing, I accidentally re-cycled your April/June issue. (Los Cabos on the cover) It had a pork chop recipe in it I really wanted to try. Could you please send me the recipe. I am not a computer person so I have enclosed a self addressed stamped envelope. Thank You, Hopefully. Susan - Thank you for your kind letter Susan! We are so glad you enjoy our publication. A copy of the April/June issue with the recipe you wanted to try is on it’s way to you.

Beat The Heat! Calendar Of Events Keep Cool While Enjoying These Summer Activities! Remembering Nevada

Summer is a great time to take a step back, spend time with family and friends and enjoy some leisure time. But the scorching heat of summer can make some activities unbearable. If Happythe Holidays you don’t want to sweat your way through season, make sure to plan ahead and choose activities that help you beat the heat. Here are our twelve favorite summertime activities that are tons of fun but will also keep you cool.

Pack A Picnic Nothing says summer like a picnic. Grab yourself a blanket, some pillows and a basket with lunch. Set up your picnic site under a large shade tree, beside the lake or ocean where there’s a constant breeze or even right in the middle of the living room with the A/C on full blast. Just sitting down to lunch in a different setting makes it fun.

Check Out A Matinee Instead of spending the hottest part of the day outside, go to the movies. You’ll stay cool in the dim, dark theatre, plus you’ll also beat the crowds and save some money on tickets to the latest summer blockbuster.

Go Ice Skating Want to truly beat the heat? Go ice skating. Indoor ice arenas are open year round, and while you might get chilly in the frigid arena

in the wintertime, it’ll feel perfectly frosty in the middle of summer.

Make A Frozen Treat You definitely don’t want to turn on the oven in the middle of a summer day to bake, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a sweet treat. Make your own ice pops out of fresh fruit and juice, chocolate covered frozen bananas or homemade ice cream sandwiches. These sinfully sweet snacks are cool and delicious, and they won’t heat up the house.

Enjoy A Wine Tasting Need a little adult time? Go wine tasting. Local wineries feature cozy air conditioned tasting rooms and all the wine samples your heart desires. Just be sure to drink a glass of water between each sample, or you might not feel so wonderful when you step back into the heat of the day. Continued on pg. 64 Not That Old And Loving It!

Happy Holidays Continued from pg. 63

Explore Local Museums

Take A Sunrise/Sunset Hike

Keep cool and learn something interesting by visiting a local museum this summer. Museums are a great place to cool down the body and heat up the mind. They’re also a great place to take kids. You don’t want everything they learned this year in school to be completely forgotten, do you?

Hiking might seem like a strenuous activity better suited for spring or fall, but hiking during dawn and dusk keeps temperatures low and comfortable. The faint, soft light also makes everything around you glow in new and unexpected ways.

Start A Pool Volleyball League

Gaze Into the Stars

It may be too hot to play beach volleyball in the blazing hot sand and blaring sun, but it’s never too hot to play pool volleyball. Grab a floating net at the local toy store and invite over a few friends. The water will keep you cool while you play. Just don’t forget the waterproof sunscreen.

Take advantage of dropping nighttime temperatures by going on a stargazing adventure. Pack a telescope, a blanket and pillows and set off away from the lights of the city. Bring a star chart or pull up a map of the skies on your phone and compare what you see with what’s shining bright where you are.

Bowl A Strike

Pack Your Bags

On blistering hot days, swing by the bowling alley for some good old fashioned fun. It doesn’t matter if you’re good at bowling; in fact, sometimes it’s more fun if you’re awful. You’ll be laughing your head off at the gutter balls you throw in no time.

Even if you haven’t planned the perfect summer vacation, there’s still time to get away on a short cruise or staycation. Head to the shore where winds from the ocean keep everything a few degrees cooler. Or better yet, book a cruise and take in the sights from the balcony of your crisp, cool cabin.

Play The Slots Casinos are the perfect cool zone to spend the day (and quite a bit of your money if you’re not careful). Enjoy the day playing penny slots, table games and betting the sports book in the perfectly cooled, perfectly filtered casino air. And if you get sick of being inside, you can always try to sneak into the resort’s pool and spa area.

July/August 2016

Yes it’s hot outside during the summer months, but you can stay cool and still have a great time with just a little bit of creativity and planning. This summer, don’t just sit at home cooking on the couch. Gather up your friends and family, get out and enjoy this special time of year. +
