an eight-week study. “If you give someone their Parkinson’s medication that activates a certain area of the brain or increases blood flow,” Alberts told a Fox News reporter in 2012, “and if you have someone do the forced exercise, you see almost an identical pattern of activation.” What does this all mean? Well, some patients in the study were able to lower their medication, others regained motion in parts of their body, and still others were able to recover the sense of smell they had lost—a common side effect of Parkinson’s. According to Alberts, the effects lasted “as long as four hours” after exercising. One study from the Parkinson’s Outcomes Project showed that people who exercised for only two and a half hours per week had an increased quality of life. The study noted that “the sooner they begin vigorous workouts after diagnosis, the better.” It’s important to note that all the people in the study rode a tandem bike—better known as a bicycle built for two. You remember that old song right? “You’ll look sweet upon the seat of a bicycle built for two.” If you’re concerned about falling, or you just don’t feel comfortable out in the trails, you can turn any bike into a stationary bike by simply adding a stationary component—called a trainer—to the back wheel. Trainers can be found at any bike store or at most sports and outdoor recreation retail stores, like REI, and they are easy to attach. So how much exercise should I do if I want to experience benefits? Do I have to do a 50-mile ride? According to the National Parkinson Foundation, “people with Parkinson’s, particularly young onset or those in the early stages, [should] exercise with intensity for as long as possible as often as possible.” That Not That Old And Loving It!

You can also contact the National Parkinson Foundation hotline (1-800-4PD-INFO) if you need help explaining to your physician “the importance of exercise so that you and your doctor can put together a plan that will work for you.” It would appear the benefits of bike riding never end. Mr. Las Vegas Wayne Newton’s path has seen him go from Virginia to Arizona and Las Vegas Happy Holidays

By Mike Henle www.mikehenle.com

Singer Wayne Newton has a long tradition in Southern Nevada. Known because of several titles including Mr. Las Vegas, he performed during an era that included entertainment greats such as the Beatles, Jackie Gleason and Elvis Presley, to name a few. Also known as the Midnight Idol, Newton was in good company in Las Vegas back in the 1960s and 1970s and he earned his keep when showrooms in Southern Nevada featured Johnny Carson, Theresa Brewer, Jack Benny, Shecky Green and Frank Sinatra in a competitive business dominated by changing times and volatile surroundings. As a six-year-old, Newton performed in a USO show for President Harry Truman. As an eight- year-old, he was selected to audition for Ted Mack’s Amateur Hour television show. Ironically enough, Newton and Presley were both booted from the show.

20 Simply55+

August/September 2016

Newton has never been daunted by setbacks, though. He continues to perform at his best when the level of stress is at his highest. It’s difficult to argue with success. Long after others have come and gone in the limelight of The Entertainment Capital of the World, Newton still headlines Las Vegas. Newton’s love for Las Vegas is shown by the fact that he still lives in the city that has driven many others to a quieter and more relaxed environment. He no longer lives at Casa de Shenandoah at 3310 Sunset Rd., but the home remains a very popular attraction. To Newton, Las Vegas is the right home in an area known for hot summers and windy weather.

early age watching country music star Hank Williams perform in a Grand Ole Opry show in Roanoke. At the age of four he told his mother he wanted to be an entertainer – and the rest is history. When he pointed to the stage telling his mother “that’s what I want to do,” it was almost like a batter in baseball pointing to the outfield bleachers while announcing that he was about to knock the next pitch out of the park. However, there was more to Newton’s talents than singing. He learned to play the piano, guitar and steel guitar by ear. He hosted his own radio show by the time he was six and Newton and his brother, Jerry, played the Grand Ol Opry shows during a career that continued to prosper.

When Newton started to suffer from asthma, his parents moved the family to Phoenix because of its dry climate. The relocation improved his health and moved him closer to Las Vegas which is 300 miles from Phoenix. Gleason hired Newton to perform at a Phoenix luncheon. That agreement led to 12 performances in two years on Gleason’s television show. Newton also appeared with Lucille Ball and Danny Thomas on other television shows. Riding the wave, Newton continued his aggressive push into show business. Even Jack Benny – who frowned on young entertainers going from a lounge to a main showroom – couldn’t hold Newton back. Happy Holidays Benny apparently knew talent when he saw it and paid Newton $1,500 a week to open his show on the Las Vegas Strip. The agreement lasted for five years. Newton’s level of confidence became evident when he was asked to open for a comedian at the Flamingo Hilton in the 1960s. Rather than oblige the offer, Newton told the powersthat-be that he wanted to headline the showroom instead. The Flamingo Hilton executive agreed to give him the chance-of-a-lifetime and Newton suddenly found himself as a headliner in November, considered one of the worst times of year to draw audiences. “In those days, you could shoot a cannon in November and not hit a single soul on the Strip,” Newton said. “There just wasn’t any business at that time of year. The odds-makers had predicted that I was going to flop. The only thing that none of them counted on was the local people. The night we opened, the locals came out in droves and totally supported and saved my career, for which I will always be grateful.” All Newton did was break all the hotels’ attendance records. Then, in 1994, he

performed his 25,000th show in Las Vegas. Twelve years later, he drew a sold-out crowd during an Australian tour. Additional performances that the old-timers will never forget were at the Fremont Hotel in downtown Las Vegas along with the Frontier Hotel on the Las Vegas Strip. People remember that he owned the Las Vegas Strip, but he also did well in downtown Las Vegas.

Are you afraid to open your closetRemembering Nevada door? Do you even know what’s in there? Follow these simple organization tips for the neat, clean Happy Holidays closet you have always wanted. The thing about closets is that they are oh-so handy places to shove stuff that is not used that often. So the first thing to do is to completely empty your closet. Then the real work begins. Determining What to Toss Closets are notorious for collecting items. Be prepared ahead of time to make a few piles as you sort through your closet. You will need to separate your belongings into the following categories: • • • •

Definitely keep Donate Throw away Undetermined

After you have separated your items, you can begin to put them back into your closet. You should have less stuff because you have thrown away and donated some articles.

Organizing Your Items Sorting through your stuff is the hardest part of organizing the closet. Now the organizing fun can begin. Begin by putting your clothes back on the racks in your closet. No doubt you will have some clothes that you wear all of the time and some clothes that fall into the “undetermined” category. These are items that you don’t wear that often but you just can’t seem to part with. Tip: A great way to see just how much you wear your clothes is to turn your clothes hangers backwards in the closet. As you wear your clothes, turn the hanger around to face the right way. After a year, reconsider whether you should keep the clothes that you haven’t worn.

Not That Old And Loving It!

The next item to put back in your closet is your shoes. There are a number of ways to organize shoes. You could stack them in clear, plastic shoe boxes with drawer pulls. You could also store them in over-the-door shoe racks to save space. Purses and other accessories can be hung on hooks installed on the walls of your closet. Scarves, belts, ties, and other small items store well on space-saving cascading hangers. Tip: Store the things you use the most at eye level, things you are less likely to use at floor level, and store least-used items up high. Odds and Ends A closet oftentimes is a place for much more than just clothes and shoes. Closets also

store things like toys, sports items, seasonal decorations, and other household necessities like vacuum cleaners. For items that won’t hang, consider attractive baskets or umbrella containers that sit on the floor. Nets that hang from the corner of a ceiling are great for soft items like stuffed toys, pillows or extra bedding. Tip: If space allows, you can store your ladder on a ceiling rack and hang hooks from it where you can suspend suitcases or other extras that are not used often. Are you tired of wondering exactly what is in your closet? Are you guilty of tearing up your closet trying to find that other shoe? Make the most out of your closet space with these simple organization tips. +

Tiny Houses:

the Newest Old Thing From sea to shining sea, in the mountains and in the valleys, the Tiny House movement is becoming housing’s equivalent of tech’s smartphone boom. Tiny houses are big and getting bigger. The small dwellings are having a big economic impact on the housing market and a bigger, and perhaps more important impact on how we live in the twenty-first century. Taking a close look at the movement could benefit everyone from “Tiny House” hunters to realtors to builders to architects to designers and manufacturers of furniture. But to understand it as more than a bit of

56 Simply55+

August/September 2016

current pop culture, one must first understand its history. Tiny living is really the newest old thing. While the average American house is around 2,600 square feet, anything below 1000 square feet is technically a tiny. However, the typical Tiny ranges between 100 to 400 square feet. So, many people are choosing to live their lives in a space that could fit into a fairly average family room. It is a hot trendy phenomenon that is anything but new. In fact, it is more than 100 years old. Not That Old And Loving It!

Beginning around 1890, people began fighting the results of the industrial revolution fed by the gluttonous growth of corporations. That growth had lured many people from farms to the city, and by the end of the 19th century, a “Simplicity Movement” took hold, encouraging people to leave the teaming city centers. There, they began building bungalows that are more popularly known as Craftsman houses. The small houses were an affordable solution for members of the middle class leaving city centers to areas that became known as suburbs. Bungalows were often kit houses turned out for the first time in 1907 by the Aladdin Company of Bay City, Michigan and then offered by big retailers like Sears, Roebuck and Montgomery Ward. During the Post WWI recession, houses shrunk even more and Aladdin turned out plans for very small houses with “bed closets,” Murphy Beds and kitchenettes. Home sizes rose with the end of the recession but they fell again during the Great Depression of the early 1930’s. After the depression they grew with the economy, but World War II and the shortage of building materials kept house size to around 1000 square feet, again according to Small House Living. After the war, houses grew with the economy and by 2000, home sizes more than doubled, to average homes of around 2200 square feet. The

Not That Old And Loving It!

architect credited with inspiring the current Tiny House movement is Sarah Susanka, author of a series of “Not So Big House” books. Ms. Susanka’s website, “The Not So Big House,” actually includes plans for a “Not So Big” bungalow” that is a nod to those early twentieth century bungalows. Today’s Tinies shrink Ms. Susanka’s “Not So Big” houses to barely there houses, but the reason for the surge is the same one that led those early 19th century revolutionaries. People go tiny to help the environment and to reduce their housing and living expenses. The reduction allows them to spend less time at work and more time at play. Tiny home buyers believe that in choosing simplicity, they trade the shackles of a mortgage for independence. The Tiny House movement is one part of “Voluntary Simplicity” which advocates less consumption and a sustainable lifestyle. Tiny House owners are modern day pioneers, embarking on a challenging course of reducing their possessions and compacting their lives. It is not a new path, for the origin of choosing small houses dates back over 100 years, and the quest for simplicity is as ancient as the human habit of pursuing it in the most complicated way possible. +

Happy Holidays

We’ve all been there. We’ve all started a DIY project believing that not only would we be saving money, but that we’d also be getting a huge sense of achievement once it was completed. And then we’ve had to abandon it half-way through (if we’ve got that far, that is), and we’ve either left it until another day (which hasn’t yet arrived), or we’ve had to call in someone to finish it for us—and perhaps even rectify what we’ve done already. So when it comes to DIY projects, be realistic. Because in the hope of saving money, you could, in the long run, pay three-fold for a job. And let’s not even touch on those unscrupulous builders who just might exploit any desperation they sense on your part to get the job rectified and/or completed!

There are some jobs that are well within the scope of the average home-owner, however; and if you’re considering tackling one of these, then first get yourself a good DIY manual that covers all aspects of the job, including any preparation that’s going to be needed. Also make sure you know what tools you will need—and that you have them. Don’t take short cuts where tools are concerned and use a spanner if the work calls for a pair of pliers. Not only do you run the risk of ruining the job, but you could also cause yourself an injury. Some jobs that you might want to steer clear of include anything that’s structural, e.g. removing a wall between rooms to create one room. This Continued on pg. 60 Not That Old And Loving It!

5 Reasons to Pay with Cash in a World of Electronic Payments!

In a world of electronic payments, paying with cash seems old-fashioned and inconvenient. It’s much easier to hand over your debit or Remembering Nevada credit card or tap your cell phone. However, could there be good reasons to pay for your purchases with coins and banknotes? Happy Holidays Could the ease and convenience of electronic payment methods be encouraging you to overspend on a long-term basis? Here are five reasons to use cash rather than electronic methods of payment.

Cash Helps You Keep Within Budget If you withdraw a certain amount of cash to cover your discretionary spending each week, you’ll see in cold, hard terms exactly how much money you have left to spend during the rest of the week. This will make you think twice about spending money on unnecessary purchases. Conversely, if you pay for something electronically, it’s easy to ignore how much you’re spending. It’s also more difficult to gauge whether or not your purchase will mean that you’re much closer to your weekly spending limit than you’d like to be, unless you check your balance continually. In addition, you’re less likely to agonize over a purchasing decision if you don’t see the amount you’re handing over for the item in cold, hard cash. If the amount paid is just a number on a screen, it’s easier to justify your

purchase than if you have to pay for it with a wad of banknotes.

Cash Helps You Keep Track of Your Bank Balance Have you ever overestimated how much you have left in your checking account because you’ve forgotten about one or more purchases that you made with your debit card? If you always use a debit card when you buy things, it’s very easy to forget about certain purchases, and overestimate your bank balance. This is especially true if you’ve bought a large number of inexpensive items in several different stores.

to spend, you’ll be more motivated to look for discounts, special offers, and lower-cost alternatives in order to gain the maximum value from your hard-earned cash. If you always pay electronically, it’s easier to pay more than necessary for each purchase and hope that you’ll have enough money left in your account until your next payday.

Cash Means That Your Purchases Won’t Cost You Any More in Future

When you pay with cash, you feel a sense of loss as the money is taken away from you. When you hand over a card and type in your PIN number or sign your name, you don’t feel the same sense of loss. If you don’t think this is true, try paying only with cash on one day and then only with electronic payment methods on another day. See how much you spend on each day. Also, notice how you feel whenever you buy something, either with cash or electronically.

If you use your credit card to purchase something and you’re unable to pay your monthly credit card bill in full, you’ll end up paying more for whatever you bought because you’ll incur interest. Similarly, if you go into an unauthorized overdraft because you haven’t kept track of your spending on your debit card, you’ll pay fees and interest on top of the amount you’ve already spent.

If you’re trying to keep to a budget or reduce the amount of money you spend on impulse purchases, paying with cash will help you spend less. If you’d also like to reduce debt, paying with cash will mean that you won’t incur any charges or interest. If you’re still skeptical, experiment with paying for everything you buy with cash for a week and see if you save money. +

On the other hand, if you pay with cash, you can be assured that there is no risk of ever paying any more for the purchase. The only exception to this is, of course, if the cash you’re using comes from a cash advance on your credit card. If you need to borrow money, it might be more cost-effective to put every purchase on your credit card than to obtain a cash advance and spend the cash.

Parting with Cash is an Emotional Experience That Helps You Rein in Your Spending Paying with cash engages your emotions more than paying electronically. You’re more likely to put the brake on your spending if your emotions are involved.
