Remembering Nevada HappyTumbleweed Holidays Once known as Tech, UNLV has grown into what it has become today By Mike Henle www.mikehenle.com

History is a fascinating subject. The topic reveals good times, bad times, growth or shrinkage. In the case of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, the history of a school that started out with 28 students that first met in the dressing rooms of Las Vegas High School’s auditorium in downtown Las Vegas in 1951. Back in 1874, the University of Nevada was founded in Elko before moving Reno in 1885. Then in 1951, the Nevada Board of Regents established an expansion when it founded the Southern Regional Division of the University of Nevada in what was called Nevada Southern. At the time, a post-war boom in Las Vegas had more than 50,000 residents. University regents who obviously had incredible foresight purchased an 80-acre site for what would eventually become known as the home of the Runnin’ Rebels basketball program. With four buildings on barren land on Maryland Parkway between Tropicana Avenue and Flamingo Road, a school that would be lovingly referred to as “Tumbleweed Tech” was started.

Since its inception in 1951, UNLV has come a long way. The school officially became known as University of Nevada Las Vegas in 1969 as Las Vegas’ population growing to 275,000 a year later,

Nearly 60 years later, UNLV has evolved into a university with 332 acres, 28,600 students and 146 academic programs. Most every long-time Las Vegan has set foot on UNLV’s campus at one time or another. Some very prominent Southern Nevada residents and students from many other states have gained their degrees at the school. The explosive growth of the UNLV campus is evidenced by this photo looking east from Thomas and Mack Center (Tom Donoghue photography).

Meanwhile, the school has gained prominence through accomplishments in both education and athletics in an area of the world that initially got its start as a stopping-off point for Mormons looking for water in the desert during their trips to wherever it was they were headed in the late 1800s. 54th Annual Art in the Park This year, Boulder City’s 54th Annual Art in the Park will be held on Saturday, October 1st and Sunday, October 2nd from 9am5pm. The expansive outdoor event is free for everyone and is one of the largest festivals in the Southwest. Additionally, the two-day event is close to the exciting city of Las Vegas in Boulder City, Nevada. The festivities will be located throughout Wilbur, Bicentennial and Escalante Parks. With well over 100,000 visitors each year, the experience is an enjoyable occasion for all those who attend. Boulder’s population is slightly over 15,500, so

the number of people who attend Art in the Park is extremely impressive! The history of this event goes back to when the Hoover Dam was being constructed. There were many years where the hospital was under federal control. In 1954, community members rallied together to raise $15,000 and used the money to make the hospital a nonprofit community hospital. The proceeds from Art in the Park directly support maintaining Boulder City Hospital by raising funds for maintenance and improvements. Not That Old And Loving It!

The featured original art makes this show a big hit for artists and those interested in purchasing art. Furthermore, artists must go through an application process to apply for a booth and no commercial buy/sell artwork is allowed. This guarantees that all the artwork is unique. There are 1st through 3rd place ribbons awarded in the categories of Fine Craft, Fine Art, Traditional Craft and Best in Show. Be aware that animals and pets will be prohibited from the parks during the event unless they are a service animal. Additionally, bikes and skateboards will not be allowed during the event. There are a couple options for parking when you get to the event. The first option

38 Simply55+

is to find parking around City Hall or the surrounding streets so you can park your vehicle for free. There are limited handicapped parking spots available on the side of City Hall and on the side of Parks and Recreation Department at 401 California Avenue. Most likely, these spaces will be taken up quickly since Art in the Park is such a popular event. The second option is to pay ten dollars cash for parking on Aspen Drive, and then take the free shuttle bus directly to Art in the Park. Art in the Park is an event that is definitely worth attending because the array of artists and booths will provide a day of entertainment for artists and art-lovers alike. Happy Holidays

By Oscar B. Goodman, Las Vegas Host Committee Chairman

It’s hard to believe that summer is winding down, September is upon us and Labor Day is just around the corner! As we all make plans to enjoy the upcoming holiday weekend, it’s important to take a moment to recognize the wonderful opportunities Las Vegas provides not only for those who visit, but for those who call our city home. This Labor Day Weekend, the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) estimates nearly 307,000 people will travel to the destination. These visitors will generate nearly $206.5 million in direct visitor spending. With a robust schedule of pool parties, entertainment and events. It’s easy to understand why Las Vegas is a big draw for the holiday weekend- not to mention, my fellow football fans who will be heading to town to cheer on their teams at the start of the season. I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention a piece of Las Vegas history that occurred in August that is

40 Simply55+

September/October 2016

paving the way for job creation and the future success of Las Vegas. On August 16, the final remaining structures of the Riviera Hotel and Casino sight were demolished. While we bid farewell to a special part of Las Vegas history, this implosion marked the next evolution of the Las Vegas Convention Center District. The project will include the expansion and renovation of the Las Vegas Convention Center, which will broaden the convention center by 1.2 million square feet, including 600,000 square feet of additional convention exhibit space. UNLV and Las Vegas have seen their share of big events over the years, but some events go beyond the spectacle of the arena or the resort corridor. Some events are so big that they instill a great sense of community pride throughout Southern Nevada. This fall, one of those events is coming to the Thomas & Mack Center at UNLV when the final candidates to become the next President of the United States will take to the debate stage for the last Not That Old And Loving It!

time before the election. Hosting a Presidential Debate is an incredible honor. It provides an opportunity to showcase our University and our community to the nation. Everyone should take great pride in our selection as the final Presidential Debate site as it shows that our university, city and state are part of the conversation on the national stage. As a key battleground state, the issues that matter in our community are the issues that will matter to the nation. Those issues and our community will be in the media spotlight for several days leading up to the debate, as more than 5,000 members of the media are expected. We encourage all of you to get involved and show your civic and community pride as we march toward the Presidential Debate on October 19. There are a number of ways you can show your support. UNLV and the LVCVA have partnered with the Clark County School District to develop programs to get our youth involved, including specialized curriculum, mock debates, an essay contest and viewing parties for the students. We will also be developing viewing parties throughout the community to provide everyone with an opportunity to share in the Debate experience. Special Debate branding with our own custom logo is available to show your business pride in our community. You can show your support through social media and make sure to tag us with #UNLVegasDebate2016. To get more information, follow the events leading up to the Debate and volunteer, visit the Las Vegas Presidential Debate website at www.lasvegasdebate2016.com. Once again, Las Vegas is making history books as this debate marks the first time a university has partnered with a destination marketing association like the LVCVA to attract a presidential debate. The worldwide-exposure this debate provides will benefit our community for years to come, positioning Las Vegas as a serious place to do business. +

Do You Understand What Your Pet Feels? Remembering Nevada

All pet-owners know how challenging,Happy Holidays even downright frustrating, it can be to grapple with the language barrier that defines humananimal communication. It’s not always apparent why Fido insists on relieving himself on the rug relentlessly, despite your firm—and, as you see it, emphatically clear— insistence that he does not. When your pet’s in pain, however, this language barrier becomes a frightening one: Whereas a miserable infant can wail at the top of his or her lungs—or even articulate “It hurts!”—a dog or a cat may convey an illness or injury far more subtly. If symptoms go unnoticed too long, your pet may enter a truly life-threatening situation—perhaps an irreversible one. That being said, we have many tools at our disposal to monitor our pets’ state of being. The most important is our power of observation. Staying aware is the foremost practice to detecting a problem with your animal in its early, treatable stages. By making a point to regularly and closely observe your pet’s behavior, you’ll be able to watch for patterns—and for aberrations from the norm. A shift in routine, even a small one, can be a warning sign. A cat that abandons a habitual post, a normally vocal dog that goes silent—while these may simply reflect a passing mood, they could also be harbingers of a malady.

56 Simply55+

September/October 2016

Other clues may manifest a bit more obviously as symptoms, at least to the pet-owner who’s diligent about paying attention. Vomiting or diarrhea should always raise red flags, even though they’re not invariably signs of a serious condition. A pet that loses its appetite or takes to hiding may be advertising unhappiness or pain. Watch for a leaking eye or nose, or an animal that is squinting noticeably. Don’t ignore even a slight limp; a minor cut or scrape can become more serious if left untreated, and a pet may be favoring a leg because of some internal discomfort as well. A swollen abdomen, which can pass notice if you’re not staying aware, might reflect a very serious issue demanding direct medical attention. Call your veterinarian if you have any concerns, and certainly seek out medical assistance immediately if an animal is in serious trouble— having seizures, openly bleeding, showing blood in its urine or stool, or the like. Your dog can’t sit you down for a one-on-one chat about his bellyache; your ill cat won’t run down a symptoms checklist with you. That doesn’t mean your pets can’t communicate a sickness or wound: It just means you have to listen carefully and maintain a sharp eye. You know your pet more intimately than anyone else, so there’s no better person to detect when something’s a little off. +

How to Catch Up on Your Retirement Savings Whether you are getting a late start on your retirement savings or your finances have been wrecked by divorce, putting the kids through college or something else altogether, you may now find that you have fallen significantly short of where you should be with your retirement savings efforts. This can be a worrisome and even devastating discovery to make, but rest assured that you may still be able to salvage your plans for a reasonable retirement. Consider these steps to catch up on your retirement savings.

Cut Back on Spending Severely If you have fallen behind on your savings efforts and retirement is quickly approaching, it is important to cut back on your personal expenses now. Depending how far behind you are and how much you need to save to catch back up, you may take such drastic measures as going down to a single car, eliminating cable TV, decreasing to a single cell phone and more. These and other measures may help you to free up several hundred dollars or more each month in your budget, and this can be a true benefit to you as you attempt to save more money.

Automate Your Savings After you have increased the amount of money that you have available to save each month, it is important to automate this savings. Set up an Not That Old And Loving It!

automated draft that pulls the money from your account each month. This may be an auto draft into a savings account, a retirement account, a stock account or a combination of all three.

Increase Savings With Your Raises Going forward, with each raise that you get, keep you current standard of living the same, and apply the additional income from your raises to your savings efforts. Each year, you will be able to save more money, and this can have a truly positive impact on your account balances.

Save Bonuses If you are like most people, there are certain times each year when you receive a modestly sized windfall. This may be a seasonal holiday bonus, a quarterly bonus or even a tax refund from the IRS. When you receive these windfalls, save the money in your retirement accounts.
