Remembering Nevada Happy HolidaysRailway Ride Nevada Southern Is Worth The Trip To Boulder City By Mike Henle www.mikehenle.com The Nevada Southern Railway excursion at the Nevada State Railroad Museum is a walk through history; and it’s a darned good one, too. Everyone enjoys a good railroad and this one starts at the yard of the museum at 601 Yucca St. in Boulder City before heading toward Railroad Pass Casino.

on select weekends are model railroad displays and 7.5” gauge live steam model trains with rides. Railroad cars are available in an open air car or air conditioned/heated Pullman coaches. A creative and enthusiastic staff of volunteers keeps visitors informed about the history of the train; while also offering special incentives for those who want to return again and again. Special events include a Sooul Train keeps the adults dancing the first week of October with music from the 60s, 70s and the 80s. Other highlights during year include a Halloween train along with Santa train each Christmas. As one enthusiast said with an on-line review, “It was great to just relax and look at the scenery from something besides a car window. Great for those who like old train cars and history. Didn’t hear much of the narrative because I was too busy enjoying the scenery.”

It’s a ride reminiscent of the 1930s when the tracks were used for the construction of Hoover Dam. The ride which takes about 45 minutes, heads for Railroad Pass Casino and returns to its station. There is the choice of open air car or air conditioned or heated Pullman coaches. The cars are wheelchair accessible and also available

Almost like the Richard Petty Driving School at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, there is something very fun about watching visitors at Nevada State Railroad Museum. In both cases, whether it’s getting out of a racecar at 175 miles an hour or riding a train to Railroad Pass and back, both experiences result in countless smiles. Not That Old And Loving It!

Director Randy Hees, a native of the Bay Area in California who joined the staff eight months ago, is ecstatic about his new home and his new gig. As he explained, both Carson City and Southern Nevada offer rides on trains and in each case, the experiences are very positive simply because there is a huge fascination about old trains nowadays. “The museum opened for tourist trains in 2002,” Hees said. “We’re now the fastestgrowing of the Nevada state museums as evidenced by the fact that 34,000 visitors rode the train in 2015. In addition, we have about another 10,000 visitors each year just to see the museum.” The history of the museum definitely plays a big part in the success for the attraction which is an agency of the Nevada Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs. As Hees explained, the railroad was started in 1931 to build Boulder Dam. It was last used in Not That Old And Loving It!

1961 when the last generator was installed at the dam. The system was finally abandoned in 1985 before being donated to the museum. “I have the best job in the world,” Hees said. “People love railroads and we try to preserve the history that is a part of this. I mean, think about what remains the favorite gift around a Christmas tree each year – a train.” In fact, a very fitting gift to the museum arrived when Las Vegas Motor Speedway mastermind Richie Clyne donated an 1888 private railroad car that goes by the name Ellsmear. Clyne, the ultimate professor of classic cars and most anything else that is classic, could not have found a better home for Ellsmear. The teamwork effort of the creation of the museum along with the dedication provided by the volunteers is the perfect combination.

TheAutoLove Travel in the Room By Kim Boyer Watching my Mom die was the hardest thing ever. As an elder Improvement Lifestyle lawHome attorney for over & twenty years, I have learned a lot from Simply Savers my clients about the process of dying. This document directs doctors to withhold or withdraw treatment that prolongs life if a person is terminally ill. Do-not-resuscitate order or DNR. This is a written directive issued by a doctor at the patient’s direction that tells medical professionals not to perform CPR if breathing or heartbeats stop. Physician order for life-sustaining treatment or POLST. This is a doctor’s order that is signed by the doctor and patient (or

patient’s representative) that directs what type of care the patient wants or does not want. My Mom had her advance directives in order, so we did not have to worry about that. I have told clients that getting advance directives in place is a gift to your family. It is one less item to worry about during a stressful and painful time. At one point, my Mom cried out “why is dying so painful?” She asked for her milk, and I placed the straw in her mouth. Her lip was curled inward. She was ready to go. I try to be strong, but really my heart is broken. Clients have told me in various ways that what really matters is being the love in the room. To be there without judgment, to be there with compassion. I am grateful for the time with my Mom and all the love. +

By Oscar B. Goodman, Las Vegas Host Committee Chairman We are just days away from a historic moment for our city, and the entire state of Nevada the final 2016 presidential debate! All eyes will be on UNLV and Las Vegas on October 19 as the presidential candidates take the stage at the Thomas and Mack Center. This is the first time a presidential debate will be hosted in the Silver State. Hosting a prestigious event like a presidential debate will further secure Las Vegas’ reputation as a serious place to do business and will erase and remaining stigma about government agencies and private industry holding meetings and conventions in Las Vegas. While the number of people attending the event inside the Thomas and Mack Center is limited, roughly 5,000 media are expected to cover the debate, generating more than $50 million in publicity value for Southern Nevada. In fact, approximately 70 million people are expected to tune in to watch the debate. This is our time to shine! Las Vegas is a destination built to host events, and while all of the excitement of the presidential debate is happening, thousands of people will also head to the destination for a number of high profile occasions and conventions. Henderson Awarded Happy Holidays $134,000 Grant to Create New Cyber Incident Response Plan With the threat of cyber incidents becoming increasingly commonplace in the news and even being featured as the backdrop for the cult hit television show “Mr. Robot,” the City of Henderson has been awarded a $134,000 state grant to create a step-by-step response plan in the event a cyber incident should occur. The city will start developing the plan with the help of outside vendors in October and it is expected to be completed within one year. Once finalized, Henderson’s plan will become the template and serve as a best practice model for the Nevada Department of Emergency Management and other state agencies. The city already has strategies in place to prevent hacking and procedures to activate if a cyber attack occurs, but the development of an action plan will streamline and optimize the response. “Cyber incidents aren’t just a threat to companies. Nevada and its communities must have a strong plan in place should an incident occur that threatens our digital security,” said City of Henderson Chief Information Officer Laura Fucci, who serves as director of the city’s Department of Information Technology.

42 Simply55+

October/November 2016

While sound technology and on-going employee training are both important safeguards, organizations must have a tested plan in place for responding to potential large-scale or minor intrusions. The cyber incident response template will enable an investigation to begin quickly and will guide users through the steps needed to determine what happened. The plan being developed by the City of Henderson will include program policies, procedures and protocols designed to thwart attempted intrusions such as hacking, the placement of malware or other security and electronic privacy threats. “It is important that we remain prepared here at the City of Henderson and that others in the state can use what we develop as a model for any cyber incident response,” added Fucci. A portion of the grant funding will also be used to train employees in Henderson and statewide who are assigned to critical cyber incident response roles. +

Veteran’s Day Ceremony 2016

The City of Henderson will hold its annual Veterans Day ceremony on Saturday, November 5, 2016, at 10 a.m. located in the Henderson Amphitheater, adjacent to the Veterans Memorial Wall at City Hall in the Henderson Events Plaza. Mayor Andy Hafen and the Henderson City

Council, along with the Basic High School Marine Corps Junior ROTC, local Veterans groups and others will honor all who have served The United States of America. This ceremony will pay tribute to Henderson patriots that fought for the basic freedoms for which our country stands. The Henderson Memorial Wall was dedicated in November 1994, and local veterans are honored annually at Henderson’s Veterans Day Ceremony. Constructed as a tribute to local war veterans, names will be added to the panel of the wall honoring several hundred Vietnam veterans, both living and deceased, as well as the panel reserved for all deceased war veterans who resided in Henderson prior to 1980. In 2006 a section of the wall was added to recognize Henderson residents who are “Killed in Action” or die from enemy action including terrorism and receive a Purple Heart. The Basic High School Marine Corps Junior ROTC will conduct the presentation of colors and read the names to be added to the memorial wall this year. The Henderson Symphony Orchestra will provide a special musical tribute to veterans and the armed forces. Moms Love Quilts, a group whose mission is to honor the men and women who serve in the U.S. military will present veterans with quilts. Remembering Nevada Happy Holidays Tips for Successful Fall Gardening

If you love to garden, you are probably dreading the winter season to come. But before you pack away your garden implements and hang up your gardening gloves, do yourself and your land a favor. The summer growing season may be all but over, but the entire autumn season stands between you and the winter yet to come. You do not have to waste those precious few months - with a few simple steps you can get your garden ready for next year and enjoy a bountiful fall harvest in the process. Here are some productive ways to spend those beautiful autumn days in the garden.

• G ive your lawn the nutrition it deserves. You may be ready to hang things up outdoors, but your lawn still has some life left in it. Fall is the perfect time to fertilize your lawn, and feeding your grass now will help it grow deeper and more resilient roots. • Plant your spring bulbs. Nothing jump starts spring fever quite as fast as the sight of a yard full of beautiful daffodils and other colorful flowers. Now is the time to plant those spring bulbs so you can enjoy a bounty of fresh flowers when spring rolls around.

Not That Old And Loving It!

• Repot those overgrown plants. It is great to have a green thumb, but sometimes a gardener can become the victim of their own success. If your plants grew better than you expected, use the cool fall weather to repot and transplant that overgrown greenery.

• Shop till you drop. You are not the only one who realizes that the gardening season is almost over. Your local nurseries and home improvement centers also know that summer is fast coming to an end, and that means plenty of bargains. Now is a great time to restock your gardening staples and score some great buys for next year. Not That Old And Loving It!

• Plant a winter vegetable garden. You do not have to give up your gardening hobby altogether this winter. Many plants, including kitchen staples like lettuce, chard, kale and broccoli, love the cold weather. If you want to extend your gardening hobby into a year-round endeavor and cook with the freshest ingredients, a winter vegetable garden is the way to go. You can also use the fall season to plant fast growers like Continued on pg. 54 October/November 2016

The fall season is the recommended time to plant not only saplings but young bushes and shrubs as well. By the time spring comes around, those new landscape elements will already be well established.

Ramp Up Your Retirement Savings with these Little-Known Strategies Happy Holidays You probably already know that participating in your 401(k) plan at work is a great way to save for retirement, but there are other strategies you could be using. These little-known strategies can help you save more money now and give you more income for retirement.

Make Up for Lost Time

The best way to accumulate wealth for retirement is to start early, but sometimes life gets in the way. Having kids, paying for college and buying a home can all force saving for retirement to the back burner. The IRS knows how hard it can be for young people to save for retirement. That is why the tax agency provides older workers with a way to make up for lost time. If you are 50 years of age or older, you can stash extra money in your 401(k) or other workplace retirement plan. You can also put extra money in your IRA and ramp up your retirement savings even more. It is still best to get an early start, but the availability of catch-up contributions can be extremely valuable.

58 Simply55+

October/November 2016

Double Your Savings This option is not available to everyone, but it can really boost your retirement nest egg. Some public sector workers, school teachers, health care employees and staffers of nonprofit organizations have the ability to contribute the maximum to both a 457 and a separate 403(b) plan. Those lucky workers could stash up to $18,000 in each plan, for a total of $36,000 a year. Saving that much can be a tall order, but workers with the cash flow to support it can really rack up the retirement savings.

Take Advantage of Self-Employment Plans

If you have a side gig as well as a full-time job, you can stash the cash you make in a SEPIRA, SIMPLE-IRA or other retirement savings vehicle. You will save money on current taxes while putting money aside for your retirement. Not That Old And Loving It!

Get the Tax Credit You Deserve Workers with limited incomes can take a tax credit for their retirement plan contributions. Depending on your income, you could recoup 10%, 20% or even 50% of your retirement plan contribution in the form of tax breaks. The maximum tax break is $1,000 for individual filers or $2,000 for couples. Ask your tax prepare if you qualify, or look up information on the credit in your tax filing software.

Open a Health Savings Account

Health savings accounts are most often used for current healthcare expenses, but they can

Not That Old And Loving It!

be valuable retirement saving tools as well. The money you put in your HSA rolls over from year to year, and you can accumulate a lot of money over the course of your career. When you turn 65, you can use the funds in your HSA to pay for your Medicare supplement, in essence using your tax-free account to pay those expenses. The flexibility of a health savings account, combined with its tax-free status, makes it an excellent savings vehicle. Saving for retirement may not be easy, but it is very important. No one else has as much riding on your retirement as you do, and if you do not save for retirement now no one else will. The above tips can help you get started and make your post-work years more fun and less stressful. +

How To Save Money During The Holidays

dar Of Events

Calendar Of Events

Remembering Nevada

Happy Holidays

Saving money is difficult at any time, but can be especially tricky during the holiday season. Whether you plan to attend holiday parties or you’ll be hosting your own, figuring out how you’ll stay within budget and avoid going into debt might seem impossible. Fortunately, there are several ways you can reduce your spending and actually save money during the holiday season. Saving money doesn’t mean you can’t have fun and it doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate. You’ll just have to do a little planning and be aware of where your money is going during this time. Here’s what you need to know.

• Track Your Spending

It’s easy to go over budget when you have

60 Simply55+

October/November 2016

a lot of small purchases. During the holiday season, you might buy paper plates, a gift for your coworker and holiday decorations. A few days later, you might pick up disposable cups or a wreath for your front door. Maybe you’ll buy a plate of cookies for a party you’re going to or you’ll need a new pair of shoes to go with your holiday dress. Small purchases might seem unimportant at the time, but when you’re looking at your bank account later, you’re going to notice just how quickly those incidentals add up. Consider downloading an app to track your spending. Log every purchase you make, regardless of how small it is. This will help you stay focused and within your budget. • Say “no” when you need to

During the holidays, you might get invited to several parties. You’ll budget and plan for these and purchase any needed gifts, but then you might get invited to another party. Don’t be afraid to say “no” when you’re invited to more parties and holiday events than you can afford to go to. Remember there’s nothing wrong with knowing your own financial limits. Unfortunately, the cost of attending holiday events and buying gifts for each host can make saving money quite difficult, so know when it’s time to politely decline an invitation.

• Use coupons

You don’t need to organize a huge binder, collect a dozen newspapers or spend an hour cutting out coupons in order to save

money when you shop. Many stores now offer digital coupons using their website or app. Before you head out to do your holiday shopping, check online for any digital coupons you can use while you’re shopping. This is a free, simple way you can reduce your costs and save money on your holiday expenses. While celebrating the holiday season can be a lot of fun, it’s important to stay focused on your finances. While you might feel bad about buying a moderately priced gift for someone instead of an expensive one, remember you’re going to be paying the credit card bill for months to come if you spend too much. There’s nothing wrong with celebrating the holidays mindfully and carefully. With a bit of planning, it’s possible to have a great holiday season while you save money. +
