th Happy Holidaysits 50 Now celebrating year, Caesars Palace has been the hotspot of special events By Mike Henle www.mikehenle.com Caesars Palace recently celebrated its 50th birthday and in a city renowned for blowing up anything older than 20 years of age, the iconic Las Vegas Strip resort has become a historic part of the Las Vegas scene. Since opening on Aug. 5, 1966 with singer Andy Williams as the headliner, Caesars has been in a class all by itself in attracting bigtime entertainers while also producing a long list of special events that once led the way in a city known for blockbuster entertainment. Key to the lifeblood of Caesars has been its consistent flow of attention-getting presentations both the indoors and the outdoors. Over the years, members of the media spent long hours at the hotel because the resort has been the hotspot of activity. Whether talking about entertainment or sports, Caesars set the standard in Las Vegas. No matter what time of year. Since the first shovel broke ground, entertainers have continued to return to perform. Sports events, which were vibrant at the hotel-casino more than 30 years ago included everything from outdoor championship boxing to auto racing programs in the parking lot to professional

tennis and even an outdoor National Hockey League game between the New York Rangers and the Los Angeles Kings. Caesars actually kicked off its special events with Dec. 31, 1967 when daredevil Robert “Evel” Knievel attempted to jump the resort’s towering row of fountains on his red, white and blue motorcycle. Knievel made the jump but was injured during the landing before Gary Wells and Knievel’s son, Robbie, both successfully jumped the fountains (Wells did it Sept. 15, 1980 while the younger Knievel pulled off the feat April 14, 1989). On May 4, 2006, “The Godfather of Freestyle Motocross” Mike Metzger broke the world record for longest motorcycle backflip at 125 feet over the fountains. However, with all of its glory over the years, the Caesars Palace Grand Prix from 198184 might be considered the resort’s most unique presentation. With Formula One for the first two years before being replaced by Championship Auto Racing for the final two years, the race course for the event was built in the parking lot just north of the hotel.

With the field running from the west to the east, the fascinating pitch of high-horsepower race car engines echoing off the surrounding hotels created what was a European-like atmosphere complete with huge crowds of spectators from all over the world.

The resort also capitalized on the Alan King/ Caesars Palace tennis classic in an arena behind the hotel. The major tournament featured such stars as Rod Laver, Jimmy Connors, Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe and was held from 1972-85.

14 years ago and am pleased that veterans with at least a 50 percent disability rating are eligible for concurrent receipt. I will not stop fighting until we right this historical wrong and legalize full concurrent receipt for the benefit of the brave men and women who have served this country in uniform. I also worked with Congress this year to honor a Nevada veteran, Master Chief Petty Officer Jesse Dean. Officer Dean is revered across Nevada for decades of work with his fellow veterans. This year, Congress passed – and President Obama signed – legislation naming the Department of Veterans Affairs community-based outpatient clinic in Laughlin in his honor. By naming the clinic after this good man, we ensured his legacy will be celebrated for years to come. We still have a long way to go in meeting our commitments to the brave men and women who have defended our country. Throughout my time in Congress, I have fought hard to ensure that veterans have access to the care and benefits they have earned and deserve. No veteran should ever find themselves out of work, homeless, or struggling. Taking care of our veterans is one of the costs of a robust defense that keeps America safe, and to neglect that responsibility is immoral. We must continue to do all that we can to uphold our sacred obligation to our veterans not just on Veterans Day, but every day. +

It is a good idea for adults of any age to get their wills and advance directives in order. Remembering Nevada In Nevada, there are four types of advance directives: Durable power of attorney for Happy Holidays health care. This document directs doctors to withhold or withdraw treatment that prolongs life if a person is terminally ill. Do-not-resuscitate order or DNR. This is a written directive issued by a doctor at the patient’s direction that tells medical professionals not to perform CPR if breathing or heartbeats stop. Physician order for life-sustaining treatment or POLST. This is a doctor’s order that is signed by the doctor and patient (or
patient’s representative) that directs what type of care the patient wants or does not want. My Mom had her advance directives in order, so we did not have to worry about that. I have told clients that getting advance directives in place is a gift to your family. It is one less item to worry about during a stressful and painful time. At one point, my Mom cried out “why is dying so painful?” She asked for her milk, and I placed the straw in her mouth. Her lip was curled inward. She was ready to go. I try to be strong, but really my heart is broken. Clients have told me in various ways that what really matters is being the love in the room. To be there without judgment, to be there with compassion. I am grateful for the time with my Mom and all the love. +

Furthermore, as Co-Chair of the VA Backlog Working Group, I recently wrote a letter to the VA to follow up on its progress in reducing the detrimental wait times and disability claims backlog. In my letter, I asked the VA what more can be done to eliminate the remaining backlog of claims impacting thousands of veterans, including Nevadans.

The VA must be held accountable for the services it promises veterans. I have found the VA’s lack of efficiency in certain areas inexcusable and will continue working to solve these shortcomings. 4. Las Vegas - Staycation
Las Vegas beckons tourists year-round, but the window of time between Thanksgiving and Christmas is one of the quieter periods in the city. During these few weeks, it’s easier to find bargain-priced hotel rooms than at many other times of the year. If you can, try to avoid booking your room when large conventions or sporting events are taking place. At these times, hotel rooms fill up and prices rise.
5. Thailand
Thailand has a well-deserved reputation as a budget destination. If you want to save even more money on your vacation, consider going to Thailand in September or October. These off-peak months are part of the rainy season, with wet and humid conditions, but you can take advantage of discounts on flights and lodging. Additionally, major attractions won’t be as crowded as during peak visitor periods. While fall is not the most popular vacation season, travelers who visit the above destinations during the autumn will be rewarded with lower prices and uncrowded conditions. included provisions for the development of a $1.9 billion, 65,000-seat stadium that could house the University of Nevada, Las Vegas football team as well as a potential professional football franchise and a variety of special events. The legislation calls for a 0.5 percentage point increase in Clark County’s room tax to help fund the Las Vegas Convention Center District as well as an additional .88 percentage point room tax increase to support development of the stadium. Combined, the convention center expansion and stadium projects are expected to create more than 14,000 jobs and pump one point four billion dollars into the economy. The two projects will have an annual incremental economic impact of $1.43 billion and will attract one million additional visitors each year. The projects were vetted by the Southern Nevada Tourism Infrastructure committee before the special legislative session was called to order. The group was created by Governor Sandoval to review several projects critical to the future of Southern Nevada. Common Holiday Hazards To Pets The holidays are a wonderful time of the year. Friends and family surround us and everyone is in good spirits. There are trees to be decorated and presents to be wrapped and food to be eaten and songs to be sung. Amidst all this wonderful chaos it’s easy to forget about the four-legged members of the family, but many of the things that make this time of year so enjoyable for us humans are, unfortunately, things that can make Christmas a very dangerous time of the year for our pets. For example, the beautiful tree adorned so gloriously with lights, tinsel, and ornaments may be the centerpiece of your festively decorated living room, but it’s just a climbing challenge to Tiger and an indoor toilet stuck in a big water bowl to Rover. Additionally, many pets won’t hesitate to pick ornaments directly off trees and use them as chew toys. While all ornaments pose potential choking or blockage hazards if ingested, tinsel and ornament hangers obviously pose a particularly dangerous problem as those can tear stomach lining or become entangled in the intestines. Finally, those beautiful strands of lights can become an electrocution hazard if pets are not supervised - many animals have an affinity for chewing on plastic. The holiday season is a time of great joy, but the expense of Christmas shopping, endless parties and costly festivities can put a damper on the enthusiasm. If your wallet is empty when January comes around, you might want to take a step back and look for frugal alternatives to your favorite holiday activities. These frugal tips can get you started. • Seek out free events in your area. Many churches host free Christmas concerts during the holiday season, and some schools open their doors for free plays and performances by their students. If you look around, you can probably find plenty of free and low cost ways to enjoy the holiday season. • Host a potluck dinner instead of doing all the cooking yourself. Hosting a holiday party can cost hundreds of dollars, but a potluck dinner will cost very little. Ask your friends to bring their favorite dishes and share their creations with everyone. • A family recipe book makes a great low cost gift. Solicit favorite recipes from your friends and family members, then print those recipes and bind them into a handy book. You can print the recipes on your home printer and have them professionally printed at the local office supply store. • Use strategic re-gifting to save money. Regifting is not always bad. Chances are you have items you do not want that others would love to have. From the blender you

got last Christmas to the coffee maker your well-meaning aunt gave you for your birthday, finding new homes for these gifts is a great way to save money on holiday shopping. • Shop early for the best bargains. Sometimes the best holiday bargains take place long before the holiday season arrives. Watch out for clearance sales, closeouts and other bargains and put the items away for holiday giving. • Set up a holiday gift exchange. If you have a big family, buying gifts for everyone could leave you broke before the new year arrives. This year set up a gift exchange instead, with everyone drawing names from a hat. You can then focus on buying one great gift instead of a dozen smaller ones. • Make homemade gifts this year. Your father probably does not need another tie, but he would probably love a gift you made with your own two hands. Use your skills to create handmade gifts for your family and friends. You will save money, and they will get some truly unique gifts. The holiday season should be a time for fun and family -- not a time of empty wallets and maxed-out credit card bills. The tips above can help you save money this holiday season without sacrificing the fun of this special time of year. + Not That Old And Loving It!
