Joshua Tree A Hidden Gem in the Desert

Instead of scurrying off to a tropical destination, many find the peace and tranquility of the desert more enticing. An other worldly landscape void of crowds and consumerism might just be the ideal place to rejuvenate. Joshua Tree National Park in southeastern California lies 140 miles east of Los Angeles and has been growing in popularity among visitors of all ages.

Joshua Tree National Park

Spanning approximately 790, 636 acres, the park was named for the unique Yucca brevifolia or Joshua trees found throughout the location. The unusual landscape spans from the highlands of California's Mojave Desert to the lowlands of the Colorado Desert. Other vegetation found here includes pinion pines, California junipers, mixed scrub bushes and a combination of Cholla and Yucca cactus. Not That Old And Loving It!

The western region of the park features a variety of granite rock formations and boulder piles that appeal to climbing enthusiasts. Conversely, the Coachella Valley found in the southeastern area of the park bears flat, sandy grasslands and dense cactus groupings that resemble a manmade garden. Scattered here and there are oases complete with arrays of California fan palms. The park has north, south and west entrances that all have interesting and informative visitor's centers. Paved roads meander through the park and lead guests to campgrounds, picnic spots, trail heads and viewpoints. Along the way, visitors are invited to stop and explore the interpretive exhibits, which provide insight into the ecology, history and wildlife of the area. Not That Old And Loving It!

By night, the vast barren space and lack of urban light pollution make the perfect stargazing location year round. During the winter months, the southern sky displays the Orion constellation, which features the brilliant Sirius star. Gemini and Taurus are also highly visible at this time. Some prefer visiting during the summer for the chance to gaze upon the Milky Way and Sagittarius. The desert is also a grand destination for witnessing the spectacular Perseid meteor shower that occurs each August. In the fall, the Great Square of Pegasus rises in the northeast and the Andromeda Galaxy is also visible. During the last weekend in October, the park hosts the annual Night Sky Festival. Remembering Nevada

Las Vegas Becoming Happy Holidays Sports and Expansion Capital of the World By Oscar B. Goodman, LVCVA Host Committee Chairman

As we close 2017, I want to reflect on the power and resiliency of our city. Let us all continue to recognize the first responders, police officers and volunteers who stepped up during our darkest moment. I have never doubted the strength of this community. The actions taken on that fateful day and after by public servants and private individuals alike, are proof of our city’s unbreakable bond. I am so proud to be a part of the Las Vegas community. Last year was an impressive year for our city. Although we’ve long-hosted a variety of sporting events from championship boxing to professional bull riding, in 2017, we stepped into the major leagues. March—one of my favorite times of the year for sports—was full of historic announcements. The Las Vegas Motor Speedway revealed NASCAR would add a second NASCAR Cup Series race beginning in the fall of 2018. The race will be in addition to its customary March NASCAR weekend. Later that month, the National Football League (NFL) voted 31-1 in favor of the Raider’s move to Las Vegas and now their future stadium has broken ground. I cannot wait for Las Vegas to join the thrilling Raider Nation!

In August, the United Soccer League (USL) announced that Las Vegas would be the third and final USL expansion franchise to join the league for the 2018 season. The new team, Las Vegas Lights FC, will play at Cashman Field. We followed this incredible news, with the revelation that the Women’s National Basketball League (WNBA) and the National Basketball League (NBA) Board of Governors had unanimously approved the relocation of the San Antonio Stars to Las Vegas. Owned and operated by MGM Resorts International, the team will also begin play in 2018 at their home arena in the Mandalay Bay Events Center. All this flurry of news comes as we celebrate the incredible success of the Vegas Golden Knights. The boys’ impressive track record in their inaugural season has proven that they bring the best of the desert heat to the ice. Here’s hoping they keep breaking records and make it to the playoffs. The latest sports announcements shouldn’t be surprising. Las Vegas is the Entertainment Capital of the World and was built to host the very best at the highest standard. It’s exciting to see us pave the path to becoming a fabulous sports mecca. I
