Doctors all over the world have been advocating the benefits of physical exercise for their patients for decades now. As the obesity Home Improvement & Lifestyle rate continues to climb and more people Savers struggle to find effective weightSimply loss measures, doctors and medical practitioners areFeedback more determined than ever to find ways to get people to increase their physical activity levels. EventsUnfortunately, the whole idea of a formal work out at the gym makes many people Calendar Of Events cringe with distaste. The notion of purposely exercising until you’re all red-faced and sweaty is enough to deter people from even starting an exercise program. Remembering Nevada Most people also struggle to find time in a hectic lifestyle to fit in a one-hour aerobics class at the gym a couple times a week. Yet Happy Holidays a few minutes of incidental exercise done in small bouts throughout each day could offer the exact same benefits overall.

10 Simply55+ June

Incidental Activity vs. Working out At the Gym Research published online by the British Journal of Sports Medicine shows that incidental physical activity throughout each day could be just as beneficial for health as a planned workout at the gym. Many doctors and medical practitioners recommend their patients get at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity each day. Aside from making it easier to maintain a healthy weight, a moderate amount of physical activity can also improve heart health. Instead of trying to plan a formal 30 minute workout, it may be possible to achieve the same results with smaller bursts of activity spread out through the day. You may spend ten minutes pulling weeds out of the garden and another ten minutes sweeping the floor. Add another five minutes of walking through Not That Old And Loving It!

the mall and five minutes to unpack groceries from the car and you’ve reached your 30 minutes of daily physical activity. Researchers found that people who maintained an active lifestyle that included regular nonexercise physical activity (NEPA) had a lower risk of developing cardiovascular disease. The same research also found that people who did a regular amount of daily incidental exercise were also more likely to maintain a healthy weight and have less chance of developing metabolic syndrome.

What Is Incidental Exercise?

Not That Old And Loving It!

Incidental exercise is the term given to any physical activity that isn’t part of a planned workout. Walking around in the mall or even pushing a grocery cart around the store all contribute to your daily activity levels. Simple chores around the house count as incidental exercise too, such as sweeping or mopping floors, vacuuming rugs, washing the car with a bucket and sponge, pulling weeds out of the garden and even hanging laundry. Park the car away from the mall doorway and walk an extra minute across the car park. You’ll find it easier to get a park and you’re getting a bit of extra activity. Switch on your favorite tunes and dance around the house for a few minutes. No one’s watching anyway, so why not have a bit of fun? Even sitting in a boat enjoying a bit of fishing can burn more calories than if you sat on the sofa and watched TV. Of course, many people have become increasingly sedentary as modern technology allows us to complete more tasks with a push of a button. Many jobs now require people to sit in front of a computer during working hours, before getting into the car to drive home and sit in front of the TV. The whole point of incidental exercise is to look for ways to get your body moving. Even a small increase in the amount of activity you get throughout the day can have a positive effect on weight loss efforts. You’ll be helping to increase your fitness levels a little more and you’ll boost your cardiovascular health at the same time.

If the wind kicks up or the temperature drops when you are wet, you’ll become cold. However, if it’s hot, then cotton is an option. Since it retains your perspiration, it has a cooling effect. Cotton is appropriate for the long treks up and down the sandstone mountains in Red Rock Canyon when it’s hot. Also, don’t wear dark colored clothing. Why? It retains heat and that’s the last thing you want when it’s hot. Do hikes that have shade. You can’t control the sun, but you can do hikes that have a lot of shade. This will keep you significantly cooler. Tip: Kraft Mtn, West route, Oak Creek Overlook, and Las Vegas Overlook aka The Muffin Boulders are hikes that have early morning shade. Nutrition

The avocado contains many of the vitamins that are most important to the body, such as vitamins K, C, E, B5 and B6. As a result, the nutrient-packed fruit is included in many of the world’s leading dietary programs. When combined with minerals like potassium and magnesium, as well as monounsaturated fats, fiber and folic acid, adding avocados to the diet can help meet the guidelines set out by the American Heart Association (AHA), as well as those of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the American Diabetes Association (ADA).

Cancer Prevention

Avocados are also rich in many of the compounds known by researchers to reduce the risk for certain cancers, such as breast, prostate and oral cancers. Studies show that carotenoids, such as alpha carotene, beta carotene and zeaxanthin can actually inhibit the growth of such cancer cells. The vitamin E in avocados has been shown to reduce breast cancer risk by 43 percent in pre-menopausal women who had a family history of it, according to the “Nurse’s Health Study.” Similarly, research also shows that women who increase their intake of lutein and oleic acid have a lowered risk of breast cancer. Not That Old And Loving It!

Stroke

As one of the leading causes of death in much of the civilized world, stroke can leave its victims partially or totally incapacitated for the remainder of their lives. Studies done on potassium and the fruits and vegetables that contain it have shown that increasing potassium intake by around 400 milligrams per day can actually cut the risk of stroke by up to 40 percent. Of the many fruits and vegetables that are considered rich in potassium (such as carrots and potatoes), the avocado has a distinct advantage in that it contains significantly more, without the disadvantages associated with cooking and boiling some of these foods. Such preparation methods have been shown to reduce available potassium by up to 30 percent. In addition, the avocado actually contains about 52 percent more potassium than sodium, clearly making it a superior choice.

Heart Disease

Low levels of sodium in the avocado make it a healthy alternative for seniors and anyone concerned with high blood pressure, which can lead to heart disease. With the USDA recommended limits set at 2,300 milligrams for healthy adults, the 5 milligrams in one serving of avocado leave plenty of room to spare. In addition, folate has been shown to significantly reduce the risk for heart disease and just one cup of avocado contains 23 percent of the recommended daily amount of it.

monounsaturated fats replaced carbohydrate calories. After one month, the results clearly showed that not only were the levels of harmful low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol around 35 percent lower, but the levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) had risen by roughly 12 percent. HDL cholesterol is considered “healthy” cholesterol, because it offers protection from free radicals and helps diabetics to control their triglyceride levels. In addition, avocados contain beta-sisterol, a phytosterol known to block the absorption of LDL cholesterol. With all of these benefits available, it’s difficult to think of any good reason why one wouldn’t want to tear into an avocado, right away. While it can be argued that the hectic pace of life today makes it much easier to just load ourselves up on burgers and fries instead, the truth is that there are far too many silent killers lurking within all that beloved junk-food. Remember, there’s no need to feel that eating healthy has to be dull and boring. There are plenty of interesting avocado recipes available in books and online, each of which can provide you with a variety of different ways to take advantage of everything this delicious and amazing fruit has to offer. Try some of them out and see what you’ve been missing.

Lower Cholesterol

Because over 75 percent of the avocado’s calories come from fat, the fruit has sometimes received a bit of a bad reputation. However, the monounsaturated fats in the avocado are actually healthy fats that offer many benefits, one of which is regulating cholesterol levels. One study involved placing participants on a vegetarian diet in which calories from Not That Old And Loving It!

Happy Holidays

Let’s Do the Twist - Again! more easy but fun dances like the funky chicken. But while Chubby Checker twisted his way to the top of the charts with “The Twist.” The song was written by R&B singer Hank Ballard and released as a B side a year before Checker recorded it. Undoubtedly it was Checker’s lively personality and enthusiastic demonstration of the dance that took it from obscurity to worldwide popularity.

For decades, amateur dancers struggled with the complicated steps of the foxtrot, the samba, and the waltz, all in effort to not look foolish on the dance floor. Men based their reputations on their ability to sweep a partner around the floor to a popular tune, while those with no terpsichoral gifts looked on in hopeless despair. Then came the twist, which was so simple that anyone with two left feet could dazzle on the dance floor. Expert twister Chubby Checker described it best: “Move your hips like you’re drying yourself with a towel.” The twist was a phenomenon in many ways. Not only did it free those outfoxed by the foxtrot to get out on the floor and move it with the best of them, it suited the clothes, the style, and the mood of the 1960s, and inspired many

In September 1960, Checker’s bubbly hit made No. 1 on the Billboard charts. By the following year, uppercrust patrons at New York’s Peppermint Lounge were twisting like crazy to the “Peppermint Twist.” Checker hit back at other bands and performers jumping on the craze with another hit, “Let’s Twist Again,” though he needn’t have worried -- the twist would forever be associated with his masterly moves. Just in case his drying-yourself-with-a-towel directions don’t resonate, here’s how to do the twist: stand with feet slightly apart, one in front of the other, or in a boxing stance. Twist your feet on the floor, moving your hips in rhythm with your feet. You can vary the dance by twisting on both feet or one foot, waving your arms in the air, leaning forward or back, or jumping in the air and facing the other way. You Not That Old And Loving It!

can also bend your knees and twist down to the dance floor. That’s it. Like the hula hoop craze, the twist is good exercise in disguise. Many young ladies of the ‘60s were delighted at the way it trimmed that all-important midsection. That’s important, because to do the twist right, you need to dress right. The jive-era petticoat, with its layers of net ruffles that held out a full skirt, such as a kneelength crinoline, looked great swirling about the dance floor, even if they were sometimes a hazard to other dancers. In 1960, the trend was toward longer, slimline skirts. While boys appreciated the sight of a trim derriere in a tight skirt twisting the night away, girls preferred skirts with pleats or gathers that would twirl and show off their legs as they Not That Old And Loving It!

danced. It wasn’t until later in the ‘60s that the miniskirt took over the fashion scene. However, when the mini arrived, twisters found it didn’t twist so well; in fact, some of the moves became downright embarrassing. In a mini, it was cooler to stand still and move the upper body only, hence dances like the swim. As an early ‘60s dance craze, the twist was unique and liberating. New dances quickly took its place, including the funky chicken and the swim, but all were easy to learn and easy to do. The twist freed young people from stiff, formal moves on the dance floor and the rigid patterns of the past and ushered in a new era of freedom of movement. You no longer have to learn complex moves to have fun to music. You have Chubby Checker and the twist to thank. +

People love to come to Las Vegas. More than 40 million arrive every year. They go to the strip or downtown to Fremont Street. They f Events gamble, catch a show, eat at one of our Calendar Of Events celebrity-chef-owned restaurants, or just sit by the pool. They see Las Vegas as a gambling mecca, an entertainment capital, or simply sin city. What they don’t see is the real Las Remembering Nevada Vegas valley. I spend a good deal of my time trying to convince friends and acquaintances alike that Las Vegas has so much to offer Happymore Holidays than simply bright lights, gambling, food, and entertainment. For example, did you know that Las Vegas has been given a bronze level award as a Bicycle Friendly Community? Or that Henderson has joined a select group of only 75 cities across

28 Simply55+ June

2018

the United States who have achieved the level of silver? Most people don’t. What does it mean to be a Bike Friendly Community? It means the community has striven to “welcome bicyclists by providing safe accommodations for bicycling and that it encourages people to bike for transportation and recreation.” Henderson Mayor Andy Hafen told the Las Vegas Review Journal in a 2015 interview, “We have made significant improvements to our bicycling amenities since our bronze designation in 2014.” Not only is Henderson the first city in Nevada to receive a silver level designation, it received it only a year after getting the bronze level award. “Winning the silver Bicycle Friendly Community award proves that we are not only committed to the growth of the cycling culture, but also dedicated to enhancing the quality of Not That Old And Loving It!

life for our residents,” said Mayor Hafen. Henderson did this, in part, by creating 184 miles of dedicated biking trails, separated from roadways—which means you can bike on the trails and not have to worry about cars. Henderson also created a Bicycle Advisory Committee that meets monthly to discuss how the city can better the biking community. They even went so far as to install a bicycle work station on the River Mountains Loop trail where you can fill low tires or perform simple maintenance. Henderson’s commitment to the cycling community is evident, and we get to reap the rewards. So how does one become a Bicycle Friendly Community? According to the League of American Bicyclists Vice President of Programs Bill Nesper, the group judges the city in five key areas: education, engineering, encouragement, planning, and evaluation. “Only 40 percent of the cities that apply receive any kind of designation,” Nesper told the Las Vegas Review Journal. “It’s not a gimme.” Both Henderson and Las Vegas are dedicated to bicycling. Following the guidelines of the League of American Bicyclists, they have “made bicycling safe, comfortable, and convenient for people of all ages and abilities.” Not to be outdone, Las Vegas has developed an online resource called Neon to Nature that helps you find bicycling trails throughout Not That Old And Loving It!

Southern Nevada. Each trail in the program has a colorful circular marker with the words “Neon to Nature” and the mile designation right on the trail. Available also as a free app, Neon to Nature is the place to find information such as a description of the trail, the length of the trail, and various amenities—like where to find restrooms. The trend is catching on all across Nevada. While our state ranking is currently 31 out of 50, we are continuing to rise in the rankings. We have 5 Bicycle Friendly communities, 12 Bicycle Friendly businesses, and 1 Bicycle Friendly university. All of this begs the question, why aren’t you riding? Why aren’t you, your friends, and your family taking advantage of the trails that both Las Vegas and Henderson have worked so very hard to create? Whether you prefer to ride a road bike, a mountain bike, or an urban bike, we’ve got the trails for you. So come on, let’s go ride a bike! + Paul W. Papa is a bike enthusiast and the author of Best Bike Rides Las Vegas and Mountain Biking Las Vegas and Southern Nevada. When not out on the trails, he can be found at www.paulwpapa.com.

Tips on Keeping your House Cool Remembering Nevada During the Hot Summer Months Happy Holidays In summer, your air conditioner will probably work overtime to keep you cool. There are other ways you can keep your home even cooler and feel more comfortable while saving on your cooling bills. Here are some of the best tips for beating the heat this summer.

Create a Breeze

Using fans, especially ceiling fans, makes everyone feel cooler. It won’t decrease the actual temperature in your home, but it will make you feel cooler by helping your perspiration evaporate.

Add Arbors

As the sun’s hot rays strike your windows and exterior walls, your home absorbs a lot of that heat. In summer, this means your home can heat up very fast, especially if you lack shade trees on the south or west facing sides. Tall arbors covered in vines offer natural and attractive shade to alleviate some of the sun’s impact. Whether arbors are the right method for you to use will depend on several things, including your home’s external architecture.

30 Simply55+ June

2018

Create a Vertical Garden Wall

An alternative similar to using arbors is to create a vertical exterior garden wall. Unless you are handy with tools, it’s best to purchase these premade and hang them on the outside of the home. Vertical gardens are best used on walls rather than for covering a window, and so you will still need to find shading for windows. If you do use a vertical garden in front of a window, make sure you leave enough space to exit the home in case of fire.

Install Awnings

Retractable awnings are an easy way to create shade, and they can be left in place all year long. Many of the top models have a remote control feature, which means that you can extend or retract the awning at the push of a button.

Use Patio Umbrellas

This cooling solution is best for homes with south-facing windows that overlook a patio. Placed close enough to the home, patio umbrellas can offer some temporary shade to walls and windows. This solution is most Not That Old And Loving It!

suitable if the side of your home facing the south or west happens to be the backyard or a side yard.

in the oven. Instead, stick with foods you can quickly heat in the microwave or on the range. Better yet, cook outdoors when you can.

Install Shutters

Ventilate the Attic

Use Heat-Reducing Window Dressings

Add Attic Insulation

Shutters are available in many materials, such as wood, aluminum or vinyl. If you use wood shutters, any color is fine, but if you choose metal shutters, make sure they are a bright color to reflect heat since darker metal will heat up and partially defeat the purpose.

Indoors cover your windows with insulating draperies. You can find these at most home retail stores. They are often labeled as energyefficient or blackout curtains.

Reduce Humidity

Humidity will make your home feel hotter no matter what the thermostat reads as the actual temperature. Using a dehumidifier will go a long way towards making your home feel cooler, but you can also take other steps. These include using fans to keep air flowing, using your washing machine and dishwasher only at night and using exhaust fans to draw humid air out of bathrooms and the kitchen.

Unplug Electronics

Most people get into the habit of leaving the television and other electronic items on and plugged in. This uses extra electricity and it adds heat to the home. It might not seem like much heat, but it does add up. Try to remember to turn off and unplug items such as toasters, computers and the television set when you aren’t using them.

Avoid Using the Oven

The oven heats up the kitchen fast and this heat doesn’t have anywhere to go but to the rest of the house. In summer, avoid cooking Not That Old And Loving It!

The hot air building up in your attic needs somewhere to go or it will radiate through the ceiling, joists and walls and increase your home’s temperature. Have an HVAC professional come out to inspect your attic to ensure that the ventilation system is functioning properly.

Another important feature of the attic is insulation. If your attic doesn’t have enough insulation, the heat will transfer easily into your home through your ceiling. Call an insulation professional to check your existing insulation and add new insulation if necessary.

Prevent Hot Air from Entering

When you open a door, it isn’t so much that cool air rushes out but that hot air rushes in. This is because heat is attracted to cold and seeks to displace it. If your home has many gaps and cracks between the indoors and exterior, more hot air can enter and make your home feel warmer in summer. The best way to handle this is to look for sources of these leaks, which can include foundation cracks and loose seals around doorframes, and seal them. The more you can create shade, reduce indoor humidity and avoid gaining heat through air leaks, the cooler your home will be. Permanent solutions that last from year to year are best because they relieve you of concerns about next summer. However, until you can get permanent installations, such as awnings and ceiling fans, use quick methods, such as window dressings and floor fans, to keep your home cooler this summer. +
