Water the Skin.
The skin needs to be watered from the inside out. Drink water throughout the day. Water keeps
the skin hydrated. Water also aids in the removal of toxins from the body and in the distribution of nutrients. When toxins build up, they can manifest on the skin. This is a special concern if you have acne, psoriasis, or eczema. The body needs to eliminate efficiently and regularly; water helps to do this. Our body uses water daily for respiration, perspiration, bladder and bowel functions. It needs to be replaced. Other liquids are not on the same par as water when it comes to hydrating and removing toxins. So, not matter what else you drink; you need water. Eight glasses of water a day is a good guideline. Then there are the groups that, while not proven by medical
research, may also experience some relief from a gluten-free diet. This includes people with autism, ADHD, multiple sclerosis, and other autoimmune disorders. There are also plenty of generally healthy people that claim they feel better on a gluten-free diet -- less likely to be tired, have headaches, bad moods, that sort of thing. Others claim it is a great way to lose weight. None of these claims are substantiated by research, but they are not disproven either. It is often speculated that people who go gluten-free eat healthier in general because they are paying attention to what they eat. So, why not give it a try? Well, there are quite a few potential drawbacks: it is a major lifestyle change for most people and a lot of work, gluten-free products are often more expensive and sometimes contain more fat to replicate taste, and many vitamins and nutrients that are found in gluten-containing foods will need to be replaced with alternative foods; this requires a lot of vigilance. The good news (great news for celiacs!) Not That Old And Loving It!
is that as more products become available there will be a greater variety of food choices that may address some of these drawbacks. If you generally feel pretty good, then you are probably better off just eating a balanced diet, including those mostly healthy whole grains. If you really feel that something is not right with your body, you should probably see a doctor first for testing and then consider a glutenfree diet. Maybe you have heard so many good things from friends that you just want to give it a try regardless. If that is the case, and you are willing to be disciplined, then go for it. Just do it in a smart way. Try to eat mostly naturally gluten-free foods rather than the packaged and processed stuff. And make sure you are getting enough B vitamins, iron, fiber, and prebiotics. The truth is going gluten-free is not for everyone, but for some people it can make a big difference. + Not That Old And Loving It!

Fitness Bands
Entertainment & Food
In the popular world of consumer fitness products, wearable tech continues to dominate. And no product line is enjoying the growth potential as much as fitness bands. These small, lightweight, wearable devices are Financial worn on the wrist and monitor a variety of fitness metrics. Then, through somewhat different means, the fitness band communicates this information back to a smartphone, tablet or laptop for tracking fitness levels over a period ofAuto time. Travel This article will discuss five of the most popular and innovative devices in the wearable fitness tech category.
Jawbone Up and Up24
The Up24 model is the newest version of the Jawbone Up Home Improvement & Lifestyle line of fitness bands, but since there are differences that may attract buyers to both products, they will both be covered. The Jawbone Up does not have Bluetooth, but interfaces via a headphone plug hidden beneath a removable cap. For syncing, this plugs directly into the headphone jack of your smartphone. For charging, it plugs into a small USB interface. The Jawbone Up24 uses the same charging system, but syncs using Bluetooth. Both devices are similar, tracking movement

during the day and sleep at night. The Up24 is supposed to be more accurate and has extra features to keep you active and motivated.
Fitbit Flex
The Fitbit Flex is very similar to the Jawbone Up, although not quite as stylish. It syncs with your computer via a Bluetooth dongle that plugs into a USB port. Like the Jawbone devices, it tracks your activities during the day and sleep at night. Since it has its own interface to your computer, it doesn’t have the compatibly issues the Jawbone does with some smartphones. There isn’t a screen, but the Flex uses LED lights to indicate how you are doing compared to your goals.
Garmin Vivofit
The Vivofit, by GPS veteran Garmin, has a large display that shows how many steps you have taken, distance covered, time in motion or calories burned. It is bulkier than either of the previous devices, but for those that want real time feedback, this might be a fair trade-off. It will also warn you if you’ve been inactive for too long. It can be paired with a separate heart rate monitor. The Vivofit will also adapt to your level of activity and set goals based on past data. The device syncs in a similar fashion to the Fitbit Flex via a USB dongle.

the newer pieces of wearable tech on the market and has good potential, but hasn’t quite met that potential yet. The Smartband, in addition to tracking fitness, attempts to be more of a life logger to keep track of everything in your life. As such, it may be a bit more than those just looking for a fitness band and it seems to be a bit less accurate than the other models. Inside the Smartband is Sony’s Core, which is a tiny tracker that will eventually be portable to other wearable tech devices. The Smartband syncs only with the newest versions of Android and Bluetooth, so checking compatibility first is important. If you are looking for more of a life coach than a mere fitness tracker, the Sony Smartband might be the best choice. Regardless of which fitness band you choose, they all track your physical activity and provide motivation and feedback, all of which experts agree are key elements to a long term fitness regime. + Not That Old And Loving It!

this kitchen appliance is more versatile than you think. To make a rice cooker pilaf, measure out your rice and water as usual. This will vary, depending on the type of rice you are cooking, the size of your rice cooker, and how many people you are feeding. When in doubt, follow the instructions on the bag. Add two or three minced garlic cloves and one small, chopped onion. To the mix, add your veggies and cooked meat. For a really quick meal, add frozen vegetables and leftover meat. Season according to the ingredients you used. For example, if you used bok choy and water chestnuts, go with Asian seasoning like ginger and soy sauce. If you used peas and ground beef, try chili seasoning. Turn the rice cooker on and cook until the rice is done. * Vegetarian option: Skip the meat and add cheese when the rice is done. Rice Cooker ... Oats: Don’t buy into the idea that oats are only for breakfast. They are extremely affordable and really good for you. Feel free to eat them any time of day - just like pancakes. They will be soft, but will add nutrients and flavour to your food. 4. Toaster Pizza: Do you have a craving for pizza? This solution is good on your budget and better on your waist than the kind you order in. Toaster pizzas are made in a toaster oven, but can be made in the oven on broil. Lightly toast the bread first and then butter it lightly. Add a spoonful of tomato sauce to each piece of toast and spread it around to all the edges. Sprinkle your favorite toppings, which may Not That Old And Loving It!
include diced peppers, pepperoni, minced garlic, onions, olives, etc. Sprinkle shredded cheese on top and dust with a bit of black pepper or garlic powder if it suits your tastes. Put the toaster pizza back in the oven and cook on the broiler setting until the cheese is just melted. * Keep it fast and simple by making plain cheese pizza. There’s nothing wrong with that. ** Instead of toast, make the pizza on pita bread. It doesn’t need to be toasted first and fits with that classic, round pizza shape. 5. Creamy Coconut Curry: You don’t need to buy fancy ingredients or expensive mixes to make this basic curry. What you need is your biggest pot, one large can of diced tomatoes, one can of coconut milk and 1 to 2 tsp. of curry powder. Plus the actual food you are currying. To start, sauté onion chopped onion and 2 to 6 minced garlic cloves in oil. Add your meat of choice like chopped chicken or pork, and cook until down. Add diced potatoes and vegetables like peas and carrots. Almost anything goes here. Simmer the whole mix together until the flavors mingle and the ingredients are done. Curry powders vary a lot and lose their potency over time so you’ll want to do a taste test. Stir in more curry if necessary. * Vegetarian option: To make this vegan, withhold the meat and add a legume like chickpeas. If you don’t want beans in your curry, try sprinkling slivered almonds or cashews over your finished curry for extra protein. **Walk away from the process by cooking it in your slow cooker or baking it in your oven. The curry smell might knock you over when you come home hungry. + September 2014

When Television Financial WASN’T an ‘Idiot Box’Auto Travel The platinum age of television was the 1970’s. There was something good on, even though we only had the original thirteen channels. We didn’t have CNN, or HBO, or even cable. What we did have was ‘All in the Family’. Home Improvement & Lifestyle All in the Family was groundbreaking television. We all remember that the first toilet flush on TV was on this show. But the show also was the first comedy show to really tackle current issues. It wasn’t until recently that it was noted that bigoted Archie was the first person to face racism on TV. Gloria was our first rape victim, and Michael, was our first liberal. Even Edith had her firsts. She was our first real mom. She wasn’t Mrs. Cleaver, who was always yes, dear-ing Ward, yet she was respectful to Archie, but still didn’t take his crap for too long. We could all learn a thing or two from Edith about being a wife. She had disagreements with her husband and her daughter, and her friends, but she was never pushy or unyielding.

The show was incredible, and spawned so many spin offs, our heads are still, well, spinning. There was The Jeffersons, Maude (which had a spin off, Good Times), Sanford and Son, Archie Bunkers Place, Gloria, and
Not That Old And Loving It!
704 Hauser St. Are you dizzy yet? All of these shows owed their very existence to the Bunkers. The writing was perfect, the characters were perfectly flawed in all the right places, and the show itself pushed the envelope in all the right ways. Nowadays we have reality shows, talent shows, and CSI – Pick a City. We don’t have real writing, or acting for that matter. Gone are the days of art imitating life. The Bunkers made it okay to be pregnant, to have to use the bathroom, and for husbands and wives to have an intimate relationship. They even made it okay to call your son-in-law ‘Meathead’ and disagree with him politically, religiously, and socially, but to respect him because he makes your ‘little girl’ happy. Today’s television fare makes it okay to do drugs, drive-bys, and deviant behaviors. This show changed the face of television forever, and we should thank the cast and crew for that. Black characters and white characters were never equals before on TV, or in the movies, for that matter. The only exception would be, of course “Guess Who’s coming to Dinner” (1967). Before that, we had a few blacks’ only movies, or blacks were always maids, gardeners, or chauffeurs. And it wasn’t just racism that was tackled head-on here. There was Gloria’s a Victim, when Gloria was assaulted. This episode showed the reality of what happens, even today, when a woman is assaulted. The first thing people want to say is, “Well, what were you wearing that for?” or “Why were you there in the first place?” This episode showed us that that kind of thinking only makes a rape victim a victim all over again, only it’s by those that are supposed to be our champions. Then there was the banter with Mike Improvement and Archie. Admittedly, Home & Lifestyle Archie was dead wrong ninety percent of the time in his thinking, but was Mike ninety percent right? What is a Living Will? NATHANIEL J. REED, ESQ

Living Trusts Are Better Than A Will By Nathaniel J. Reed
Wills do not become effective until the maker passes away. However, Living Trusts are effective during the Maker’s lifetime. A Living Trust can provide for the Maker’s care and health, if the Maker is physically or mentally incapable. Will cannot, since it is not effective until the Maker passes away. Wills have to be probated. Probate is a Court procedure required by law that is administered by a Court. Living Trusts do not have to be probated. Probate is burdensome, costly and takes time. In most cases the executor or a Will has to have the probate judge approve sales, purchases, distributions and fees almost everything mentioned in the Will. If you have an estate over $200,000.00 the attorney fees are high and it could take a year or longer to complete the probate. Simple Living Trusts are not expensive and not complicated. There can be a spend-thrift provisions in the Trust; this would protect a beneficiary that has a debt. The Creditor cannot attach the beneficiary’s share; Living Trust is the best answer. WAYS
Auto ToTravel Cut Down
On Spending
If you realise that you are overspending resulting in a depletion of your savings account, Home Improvement & Lifestyle it’s time to keep your spending in check. It takes a lot of discipline to stick to your financial plan. However, keeping to a financial goal is not that difficult if you start with the basics. Fortunately, there are effective strategies you can adopt to make sure you follow through on your good financial intentions.
1. Be Specific
Be specific about what you want to achieve out of your financial plan. Decide how much you should save each month or how you should pay off your credit card debt. For example, specifying $200 as the sum you should save each month will help you to visualise and reach that target instead of simply saying ‘I’d like to save some money per month”. Likewise the motto ‘Cut down on grooming expenses’ sounds vague and less concrete. How about turning it to ‘Spend no more than $100 each month on grooming’? This puts your goal into perspective.

2. Avoid Shopping As An Extreme Emotional Outlet
Many of us are guilty of spending when we are stressed, bored or depressed. Yes, no one can deny that shopping gives us momentary satisfaction and happiness. This perk-me-up feeling will wane as the novelty wears off. One way to avoid shopping during times when there is an extreme emotional surge is to enjoy the simple pleasures in life such as catching up with a friend over a cup of coffee, cooking a new dish for the family or having a picnic in the park.
3. Buy Time
Buying time is essential and effective strategy to avoid impulsive shopping. I shamefully admit that I tend to surf the net from time to time for luxury items like accessories. From experience, I’ve learnt that impulsive shopping will lead to regret. Once the novelty of the item wears off, I realise that I don’t really need the item as it is never or rarely used. Buying time helps to put my spending in check as it gives me time to Not That Old And Loving It!
rationalise and weigh out the pros and cons of the item I have been eyeing.
4. Reward Yourself For Achieving Your Goals
Once your saving goal for the month is reached, reward yourself with something small such as a trip to the movie or simply buying scones for afternoon tea for the family. It is essential to acknowledge your achievement, no matter how small as this will motivate you to maintain the good savings habit. Cutting down on expenses is not an easy task. It takes a lot of discipline and will power to achieve results. As Helmut Schmidt quotes ‘Whoever wants to reach a distant goal must take small steps’. A small consistent achievement goes a long way in realising your long-term financial goal. +

Paying Down Your Debt Debt Snowball Auto Travel vs. Debt Avalanche
Financial freedom means not being a slave to your checkbook. Payday has less importance Home Improvement & Lifestylebecause you aren’t broke waiting for your next infusion of cash. You don’t live paycheck-to-paycheck but rather you have plenty of cash in your bank account.
Save Vs. Pay
Your first step to financial freedom is to put some emergency money away. The last thing you need is an emergency which forces you to put a charge on your credit card or take out a loan. There is some discussion regarding whether you should save or pay down bills. If you don’t have something saved up, you turn to credit to finance emergencies. Ideally, you want between three and twelve months in an emergency fund. To start with, put away $1,000 to buffer against emergencies.
The Debt Snowball
The debt snowball is the most popular debt repayment method. Debt snowballs reorder your debts by balance with the smallest debt paid off first. You
28 Simply55+
September 2014
pay down the lowest balance first. Once paid off, you tackle the second lowest debt by paying the minimum on the second debt plus the monthly payment on the paid off debt. For example, you have three credit cards with three monthly payments: $25, $50 and $75. You pay off the lowest balance first with the $25 monthly payment plus any extra you can afford. When that is paid off, you take your $25 payment and apply that to the next balance so you are rapidly paying down your debts. With the second credit card paid off, you take the $75 from the first two debts and pay down the third one giving you $150 a month to put towards your third credit card.
Not That Old And Loving It!
The downside of the debt snowball is that you pay more in interest. Your lowest balance card is not necessarily your lowest interest rate. While you focus on your lower balances, cards with higher interest rates are still charging you each month. So, why do it? It’s a psychological trick. By paying off lower debts, you get immediate satisfaction of paying down your debts making it more likely you stick to the program. If it takes forever to pay off your bills, you are more likely to fall back into a debt cycle of charging and paying minimum payments.
The Debt Avalanche
If you aren’t lacking in motivation, consider the debt avalanche instead. Just like the debt snowball, you order your Not That Old And Loving It!
debts and pay them off oneby-one. You take the monthly payments for your paid off debts and apply them to the next one rapidly paying them down. So, what’s the difference? In a debt avalanche, you order your debts by high interest rate. You tackle the bills charging you the most interest each month and save money in the long run. So, which method is right for you? In most cases, the debt avalanche is the better option as you save money in high interest rate fees. But if your highest rate interest creditor is also your biggest bill, it’ll take a long time to pay off that first debt making it more likely you give up on the debt repayment plan. +

Not That Old And Loving It!
While Las Vegas might seem like a rather isolated oasis in the middle of a vast desert, its location is actually great for quick travel to a variety of amazing destinations. One of the nation’s most beautiful and breathtaking national parks is only 2-3 hours outside of Las Vegas. Zion National Park in Utah is a national treasure and is visited by millions of people each year. This park is the perfect place for high adventurers as well as those who may be looking for a more relaxing way to enjoy the splendid outdoors. Zion National Park was the first national park established in Utah. Ancient people found
the area to be a shelter and haven from the harsh surrounding desert. The impressive Zion canyon was carved out by an arm of the Virgin River. The canyon provided year-round water and a fertile place to plant, while the towering cliffs and rock formations provided shelter from winter storms. As the West was settled, people of European descent built homesteads in the area, farming and ranching in and around Zion. Fredrick Dellenbaugh traveled to the area to paint, and his sweeping landscapes of the region were displayed at the World’s Fair in 1904. This helped to expose the beauty of the remote area to the nation at large and William Howard Taft made the area

into a national monument in 1909. Ten years later, the protected area was expanded and it was named a national park. Visitors have been awed by its beauty ever since. Zion provides visitors with a variety of sightseeing options. There are seven main trails in Zion Canyon that range from a half hour to 8 hours round trip. The park also provides back country permits for those looking for more advanced adventure, including repelling and navigating tight slot canyons. The drive
through the park on the Zion-Mt. Carmel highway is enjoyable and provides plenty of sight-seeing by itself. Zion Canyon is closed to individual vehicles, but a large parking lot is located at the bottom of the canyon and frequent and comfortable shuttles are provided for visitors. The shuttle will take you up the canyon, stopping at trailheads along the way. Besides the day hikes, there are also horseback rides and guided nature tours available in Continued on pg. 32

the park during the spring, summer, and fall seasons. The geology and biology of the area are unique and fascinating. Going to the visitor center and learning more about the park can enhance your trip. A guided nature walk is also a good idea if you are interested in the plant life and wildlife in the area, as well as the geological history of the impressive sandstone cliffs and canyons. While Zion National Park is still an arid climate, it is brimming with life. Over 1,000 different varieties of plants live and bloom in the park, and hundreds of species of mammals, reptiles, and birds live or travel through the park.

The best time to visit Zion National Park depends on what you would like to do there and what kind of weather you are looking for. In the spring, the weather can be very temperamental. You may have a warm sunny day followed by cold and rain the next. Sunny weather is more typical, but wet weather is not uncommon. Mornings and evening can be much cooler than the middle of the day, so plan on bringing layers. The temperature at night can often be 30 degrees cooler than the temperature during the day. rivers and streams are high due to spring runoff from snowmelt in the mountains. Home Improvement & Lifestyle Summer is a popular time in the park, but be prepared for high temperatures. Temperatures that exceed 100 degrees are common depending on your elevation in the park. Summer is a great time if you want to hike the Narrows, a popular hike that involves walking directly in the water. However, summer is also monsoon season which can increase the risk of flash-floods. You should always be aware of weather conditions and any flash-flood warnings that have been issued. Even if it is not raining in the park, if nearby mountains are receiving heavy rain, flash-floods could be possible in the park. Many consider fall to be the ideal time to visit the park. In the fall, temperatures lower and the weather is drier. Fall colors are also gorgeous in the park. The cottonwoods turn yellow along the Virgin River, and the bigtooth maples flash a brilliant scarlet. Temperatures can still vary and you can expect evenings and nights to be cold. You should plan on layers during this time of the year as well. Winter is the least popular time of year to visit the park. Temperatures are often freezing and conditions are usually wet. Although Zion is located in the desert, its high elevation
means that parts of the park receive heavy snow. Snow in lower elevations usually melts during the day, but in the higher elevations the snow accumulates. There are some winter activities that are available in the park and roads are kept plowed so that they are passable. Trails may be closed due to snow and ice, however. When you are planning your trip to Zion National Park, you will want to choose what kind of lodging you are looking for. There are three designated campgrounds in the park. Campsites have areas for tents and areas for RVs. You are allowed to have two vehicles at each site, but only one RV or trailer per site. Camping is very popular in the park and reservations fill up fast so it is important that you give yourself plenty of time to make a reservation. Pets are allowed in campgrounds and can be left unattended at campsites as long as they are restrained and their needs are provided for. There is only one trail in the park that allows pets and they must be leashed at all times. The Virgin River does run alongside each of the campgrounds, but many of the sites get little to no sun during the day so tents and camping trailers can get very hot. Bathrooms with flush toilets and running water are provided at each campground. Continued on pg. 36 Not That Old And Loving It!

Why You Should Consider an Electric Car Home Improvement & Lifestyle
A transformation is happening in the automotive industry as an increasing number of consumers demand alternatives to fossil fuels. At least some automakers have heard the calls and are responding with vehicles like the Tesla Model S and Nissan Leaf. Both cars run purely off of electricity, meaning owners must plug their cars in to charge up the batteries instead of having to fill up a fuel tank at the local gas station. If you are considering switching to an electric car, or just adding one to compliment your traditional vehicle, read on for reasons why you should take the plunge into the new vehicle technology. One of the biggest benefits of electric cars is something most people don’t even think about. Cars that use internal combustion engines have a lot of moving parts, but electric cars have very few. Fewer moving parts means fewer mechanical problems. If you hate having your car serviced all the time, an electric car would be right up your alley. You will never have to take your car in a for an oil change, have the belts replaced, or have the fluids topped off. The only fluid the car uses is for washing off the windows while driving. You will have to replace the wiper blades and tires, plus have the brakes worked on, but that’s about it. By skipping the gas station, you will save money. It costs less to drive the same distance using an electric car versus a car that runs on fossil fuels. Gas and diesel prices are constantly shifting, and sooner or later
38 Simply55+
September 2014
they will spike again. If you drive an electric car, you skip out on those costs. The price for electricity stays relatively consistent throughout the year. Not only that, you will skip out on getting roped into buying big drinks and fattening treats that are sold at gas stations. Driving an electric car means you will be contributing to air pollution less. Like it or not, driving a car that burns fossil fuels leads to more air pollution, which has been linked to rising global temperatures as well as a number of human respiratory problems. You also will no longer have to worry about running your engine in a closed garage. Some people have pointed out that electricity often is generated by burning coal, which produces considerable air pollution. To get around this problem, install solar panels on your house and generate your own electricity. Electric cars are quieter and thus more pleasant to drive and ride in. If you are on a long trip, you won’t have to hear the roar of an engine for hours on end. The same thing goes for if you are riding around in the city. Fewer road noise actually benefits everyone, including residences and business located near busy roads. Driving an electric car is incredibly fun. Not only do you get to feel like you’re driving some futuristic machine, electric cars rocket forward from a standstill. Electric motors deliver their peak torque output at a standstill, meaning you can have a blast launching from a full stop. + Not That Old And Loving It!

Pets
The Best Medicine for Seniors by Rachel Wright
You may think of Fido and Fluffy as your faithful companions, but did you know owning a pet has serious health benefits, especially for senior citizens? If you’re looking to live a longer, healthier, and happier life, a dog or cat may be the best medicine! Medical studies show that owning a pet can help lower blood pressure and pulse rate, resulting in fewer trips to the doctor. Petting an animal helps reduce stress, and sharing your home with a furry friend can provide a sense of security and companionship. Taking care of a pet can also help seniors ease feelings of depression, isolation, and the grief of losing a loved one. Looking to get active? Adopting a dog will provide many opportunities for long walks, trips to the dog park, and meeting new people. Plus, owning any pet often requires a routine -- feeding times, walks, litter changes, etc. -- that can be both mentally and physically stimulating. The additional exercise will further add to the list of health benefits pet owners receive from their furry friends! Seniors aren’t the only ones who benefit from pet adoption.
40 Simply55+
September 2014
Adopting an older shelter pet gives the dog or cat a second chance at a happy, healthy life. Many believe that rescued pets simply know they were specifically chosen to join a new family, too! Walks, playtime, and socialization will keep both senior pets and owners active and engaged. In animal shelters everywhere, “senior” dogs and cats -- often dogs over age 3 and cats over age 1 -- are frequently overlooked for puppies and kittens. Taking home an older furry friend has plenty of benefits, though! Older pets may already be housebroken, and adult dogs may have received basic obedience training from a prior owner or shelter volunteer. Animal shelters will also have a wider range of senior pets, so adopters can find the right breed, size, and energy level for their lifestyle. Many offer senior discounts, too! Saving the life of a shelter pet is the easiest way to help add more years to your own. With so many pets in the care of local animal shelters, make adoption your only option when the time comes to welcome a dog or cat into your heart and home. You’re sure to be bow-WOWed by the unconditional love and enjoyment you receive from an adopted furry friend! + Not That Old And Loving It!

Home Improvement & Lifestyle Whether you want to get your house ready to sell or simply freshen up your home’s appearance for a party, decluttering is an important part of organization. Decluttering your home will not only free up your personal space, but it will also make your home look larger, more inviting, and more welcoming to any guests you may have. Unfortunately, many families aren’t sure how to start decluttering their homes. As a result, the idea of getting organized can be difficult and overwhelmed. If you’re ready to start enjoying a cleaner, tidier home, there are a few simple steps you can take to conquer your house’s clutter once and for all.
Set Your Goals
Decluttering Made Easy
Avoid saying, “I want a clean house.” This goal, while certainly worthwhile, is nonspecific. Because the goal doesn’t state exactly what you expect from a clean home, it’s going to be more difficult to attain. Write down clear, precise things that you want from your house. Look at your goals and make a list of steps you need to take to achieve each one. Having a list will help you break down your goals into reasonable, attainable steps. For example, if your goal is to have a clutter-free kitchen,

Take Your Time
Don’t rush the cleaning process. If you wait until the night before a party or an open house, you’re going to be rushing. This will not only stress you out, but it will also cause you to make hasty decisions. Try to take your time cleaning. If you’re in the mood to organize, by all means work through an entire room. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with cleaning large spaces at once. What you don’t want to do is feel rushed and throw out items that Downsizing Your Home you’ll later need.
The first thing that you need to do is set some personal goals. Whether you have a studio apartment or a Tips for large mansion, setting goals will help guide you in the decluttering process. Your goals can be absolutely anything. The point of setting goals is simply to give yourself a specific guide when it comes to decluttering. For example, you could say, “I want to have clean counter tops and a tidy kitchen.” Another possible goal would be to have a clutter-free, organized bedroom.
Make A List
your list could look something like this: 1. Clean out kitchen cabinets 2. Place trashcan in a usable spot 3. Clear off counters 4. Create organization system for papers and mail
As you go through a room and begin to declutter and organize, ask yourself if you want the item, if you need the item, and if you use the item. When you go through your bedroom specifically, also ask yourself if you like the item. You might find that you’ve been holding onto some things that you don’t necessarily enjoy using, but that you’re afraid to get rid of.
Say Goodbye
Put your unwanted items in black garbage bags and put them in your car. This way, you won’t be tempted to grab items and put them back in your house. If there’s an item that you’re having a particularly difficult time parting with, consider taking a picture of it so that you’ll always have the item with you. You can also verbally say “goodbye” to each item that you get rid of. This could help you emotionally separate yourself from the items that you’re getting rid of. + Not That Old And Loving It!

Top Ten Memory Exercises for Seniors 1) Association One way to remember things more clearly is to create linkages between different concepts, ideas, words, and visual pictures. Pick some common elements between disparate concepts, and then try to come up with something memorable based on those commonalities. 2) Crosswords and Other Puzzles Puzzles test problem-solving ability and memory. They also require you to make new associations between words while reinforcing the old ones. Puzzles using numbers, such as Sudoku, also test your problem-solving ability together with your mathematical knowledge. Puzzles can help sharpen your mental processes by forcing your brain to dig deeply into its storehouse of knowledge and abilities. This exercises your memory in a direct way at the same time as it stimulates your cognitive processes generally. 3) Playing Cards and Other Games Like puzzle solving, card games test your memory and analytical abilities. But another thing that is very helpful about card games like Poker and Bridge or board games such as Monopoly or Trivial Pursuit is the fact that playing them is a social activity. Social interaction provides encouragement and reinforcement while making otherwise challenging experiences more pleasant and enjoyable. Conversation with old friends about good times in a pleasant atmosphere also helps to stimulate the informational retrieval processes associated with memory. 4) Reading Something Different The chances are that your reading choices probably tend to follow certain patterns with respect to subject matter and viewpoint. This can put you in somewhat of a mental rut, which is exactly the opposite of what you want when your cognitive functions are starting to become impaired. If you challenge yourself by reading new types of materials, or new viewpoints on old subjects, it forces the brain out of its comfort zone. This stimulates new neural connections, which will connect elements of your memories in new and vital ways. 5) Loud Recitation When you want to memorize something, simply repeat it out loud, over and over. Since this is an unusual and unfamiliar way to learn things for most people, it will bring a new dimension to your techniques of memorization. 6) Storytelling This is somewhat different than ordinary storytelling, where you give an account of something that happened to you in the past. With this exercise, you will take a set of randomly selected objects, (i.e. a toothbrush, stove, bed, and your pet dog), and then make up some kind of story that connects all of those disparate items. This story creation process leads you to call forth everything you know about particular objects, all of the facts you have learned about them over the course of your life, so that you can come up with connecting ideas that will make sense as you build your story. 7) Mental Calculation This is an exercise that combines shopping and mathematics. The idea is that as you shop for groceries, or other items, you should keep a running tab in your head of the total cost of everything. If you know the sales tax, you should try to include this in your calculations as well. Test yourself to see how accurate you can be, and don’t write anything down so it all has to be done from memory. 8) Blind Jigsaw Puzzle Look at the completed picture once, but once only. Then put it aside, and go ahead and try to reconstruct the pieces of the puzzle without going back to the original picture for reference. This puts your memory to the test at the same time you are sharpening your overall mental processes by calculating how the assorted pieces might fit together. 9) Learning New Skills Whenever you learn anything – a new language, a sport, how to cook, etc. – you are creating new and vital mental activity. And a major part of learning something new is memory because you must memorize each aspect of your skill before you can move onto the next part. Learning any new skill would be impossible without memory. 10) Go Online! The Internet is an incredible resource for activities, games, puzzles, or competitions that can help improve memory and overall mental function. Sites like Buzzle and Play With Your Mind are loaded with possibilities, options, and suggestions. If you are willing to do just a little bit of searching, you can find plenty of new and interesting alternatives to some of the old favorites that we have already mentioned.
