90's kid

Being from the generation where we experienced transition from analoge to digital. How things have become smaller and how its not just an utility but its about the overall experience. Products back then used to have more of a tangible aproach whereas now its about digital experience. Combining both of these is a key for successful products. So I try combining physical and digital aspects to create great product experiences.

TITLE statement

THE CASSETTE Its a storage medium which carries audio data on magnetic film on two rotating spools enclosed in a casing. It was efficient and most widely used storage medium for music recordings. Cassette players were really famous in 90s and music enthusiast had their collection in this medium. Having a tangible medium added more value to their collection as they spent more time maintaining and preserving it and could proudly show off their collection. It was a compact storage medium compared to other mediums at that point of time.

INTERACTION Cassettes have this iconic Interaction of winding the tape by rotating the spools. People use to wind it off to reach their favorite track. They actualy knew where their song sits on which part of the tape. Along with tapes, Portable cassete players became very famous in 80's-90's and you use to see more tapes around. Its transperent body allowed you to see through your tape progression. 2 sides indicating side A and side B. 30 to 45 mins of play time on each sides. Walkman by sony is one of the most iconic Cassette players.

KIDS - CYCLING - MOTOR SKILLS

Cycling and other games. They live in their own universe, create stories and talk to their toys. Cycling and other physical games help them develope their motor skils. Different stages of cycling includes different types of bikes. First one has four wheels where kid sits and pushes with the feet. Second is tricycle where kid learns concept of peddling. Third is a balance bike which gets them used to bike seating and gives them understanding of balancing. Last one is a full fledge bicycle which combines everything. If each step is followed correctly, kid learns to cycle and develops interest for it. Kids usually tend to creat stories around their toys and also talk to them.

INDIANS LIVING ABROAD

Indian cuisine Each region of India has its own style of cooking and distinct flavours. Stable diet maily consists of Rice, Indian breads(Roti, Chapati, Naan... etc.), Curries made with Lentils or vegetables with different combinations of spices. Indians living in foreign countries face trmendeous issues associated with food. Most of them are abroad for their studies or jobs which doesnt allow them spending time on preparing meals. Unless one loves cooking or is skilled , Its the most difficult task one can face. Visiting a Indian restaurant on daily basis is not the solution, or hiring a labour for cooking in indian style is not economic. So they end up consuming intant packed food or junk dishes. They litrally depend on such cuisine which does not suit their body. Other problems associateed with cooking are setting up an inventory prior to cooking. Most of us dont know what spices adds up what flavour to the curry and which ingredients can be made with which combination. cooking apps and videos help you cook but they dont cook for you. One has to follow instructions shown in video and compare with on going cooking process which can miss match and end up into completely different taste.

"HOW CAN I GET HEALTHY INDIAN MEAL WITHOUT MUCH HASSLE"

86 86

A Complete Meal Indian prefer complete meal atleast twice a day. during the lunch and dinner. A complete meal consistes of Rice/Indian Bread and curry.

One pot recipes Dishes which require one vessle to cook. Most of the people prefer such recipes as they are easy, quick and hassle free. You have 3 things to mix and cook. First is the base which can be water or oil. then comes Spices which adds the taste, followed by Ingredients like vegetables. And let it cook. One can instantly cook One pot curry recipies and have it with Rice or Roti.

Problems faced Inventory management Planning meals Measurements Timely dispensing Stirring

What we thought of How about An Appliance which takes care of cooking that means, it can measure, dispense, do the stirring as well as monitor your cooking. The user just stes up the appliance with basic ingredients and defines what is what, and can command the appliance with an mobile app to start cooking. This mobile app will also help the user maintain inventory, Plan meals, Maintain diets, and also live monitor cooking wirelessly.

87 87

Automatic cooking appliance.

Automation has taken over in all sectors in home like cleaning, storing, enterntainment, furniture etc. It still lacks in kitchen in the category of appliance. Automation in the field of kitchen appliance is limited to Dishwashing and microwave, where the operations are partially manual. There in no such device which on command, Cooks meal and keeps it hot ready for you before time. Such machine would be able to cook variety of recipes keeping efficiency in resources usage and power consumption. Automation along with Artificial Intelligence would lead to infinite possibilities. Our Aim with this machine is to cook one time meal for family of 3-4 member.

88 88

TITLE statement

Existing Concepts Some of the concept which aim for similar results lead to semi auto-mated or assistive processes. These machines take care of few tasks like, temperature control, time span, ingredient measurement or making Cooking visible. Some these concepts target commercial cooking and cannot be used in home kitchen while othere features moving mechanical arms or other alternatives which requires huge installations.

89 89

TITLE

Sketching Ideas The basic structure was to have a storage are for ingreadients above

TITLE statement the cooking setup. So the cooking vessels are in between Induction and

dispensing section. We wanted to have a form which visually represents each section wth elegance. We had size constrains according to standard U.S. kitchen setups.

90 90

TITLE statement

Mock- up Form mock ups help us visualize product in real environment. I worked on multiple such mockups varying size, fillets, lid openings, tray, different vessel size and screen placement. We compare different mockups to see proportions and correct size.

91 91

TECH INSIDE

WORKING PROTOTYPE As we were building prototype of a cooking appliance, material selection was an important task. We start of with segregating different parts as to which needs to be food grade and which need not. Like all the parts coming in contact with food needs to be food grade plastic whereas outer casings needs to be strong and be able to withstand cooking heat. This appliance include storage of food ingredients which needs to be dispenced at correct interval. Adding automatic dispensing in the machine TITLE statement took us into usage of Liniear actuators, Stepper/Servo motors and several gear assemblies. For the prototype, all the movements will be actuated with individual actuators, whereas for the production model, Single or two types of actuators will transmit motion to rest of the mechanism. We have designed a clutch gear mechanims for the same. We use peristaltic pumps for accurate dispensing of liquids like water and oil. Other mechanisms includs automatic stirrer, lifting and opening up the lid. The spice dispensing included a push mechanism which dispenses fixed amount of spice every time its pushed. Sensors like Infrared, thermal and weighing scale are used to do the readings contineously andkeep a check if the cooking process is going well. There is also a camera on top of cooking vessel actually taking images at intervals and comparing with the data points feeded to it. All of these were caliberated and controled on a alogorithm and it runs on raspberry pi. The whole machine can be controlled by an app or the touchscreen display on Riku. 92 92

TITLE statement

TITLE STATEMENT WHICH IS IMPORTANT FOR THE PROJECT TO BE EXPLPANATORY Usage of stardard parts. As far as possible its better to use standard parts to ease prototyping. Also it makes the further production real smooth. Having a custom part built boosts up the cost of manufacturing. So unless it was a special nead for any movement, we stick to standard easily available parts on machine. My biggest chalange was to understand these standard parts and working on basis of their availability and constraints.I was deeply involved with the engineering team while working on the internal mechanical design.
