The New Food Street- a shahi experience By Injila Baqir Zeeshan Those of you who may be scared to death, like me, of driving to the far end of Lahore to reach the New Food Street, running alongside the majestic wall of Badshahi Mosque, should know that it truly fits the saying, well worth the effort! You have the option of parking your car right where the street begins (the old route to Cuckoo’s Den and Andaaz), but if you have some spirit then leave your vehicle in the parking towards the Minar-e-Pakistan side; climb the horse drawn carriages and let yourselves be enveloped by a short yet memorable ride that takes you through the Lahore Fort. With Jehangiri darwaza towards your left and Hazoori Bagh on the right, you can feel yourself being engulfed into the aura of the dimly lit towering Mughal architecture against the inky blue night sky. Majestic as they stand during the day, these buildings seem to come alive at night reminding us of the glory that once was ours. Step out of the qila into the old shahi mohalla, the New Food Street, where a different world has been constructed or rather renovated, in the age old buildings. A brilliant array of colours greets you here and it takes a while to fully take in all the woodwork, the statues, the filigrees the painted windows and of course the delightful little antique shop on one corner full of items that will bedazzle you. I will get to the food now: some very fussy desi food addicts that I happened to take along, could not help but admire most of the items there such as payaas, tawa chicken, hareesa, all sorts of tikkas and kebabs and then falooda, firni and almond sprinkled kashmiri chai. Tempted yet? Go and experience it, before it gets too hot to eat outside in the open.

Fashionista Fatima

From the catwalks of Paris to the Fashion Houses of Milan, walking the streets of New York to the boutique lanes of London, Fatima Khan, fashion stylist, designer, graduate of NCA and The London School of Fashion is a true Fashionista. Her unique esthetic sense, coupled with her experience as a fashion buyer/merchandiser for various Fashion Houses in London has helped to launch herself as a fashion connoisseur par excellence. Meet her every Sunday and learn what’s hot on the high streets in the global fashion village as well as the season’s must-haves and how to wear them.

Royal Romance Well, what would be the best outfit to put on this Valentine’s Day to look smart, stylish, astonishing and impressive is the big question in every woman’s mind. With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, here are some tips to celebrate this day the Fashionista way. Fashion has a very important role in our lives and when it’s the most romantic day of the year it is very important to look your best. We all know that love should not be based on external looks but the truth is, if someone is especially dressed up for you and is looking stylish, it all adds up. Fashion has gone to a funfair land this year, with the maximalism, bright colours and bold prints all over the runway. Valentine’s Day Fashion Trends are mostly including floral designs and edgy cuts. Floral colours like red, orange and pink are considered to be specially marked for Valentine’s Day.

Runway

Roksanda Ilincic, Elie Saab, Valentino, Michael Kors, Christian Dior, Talbot Runhof, Gucci, Versace, Lanvin, Sonia Rykiel, Akris, Giambattista Valli, Paul & Joe have one thing in common, One word: Impact and that’s exactly what you need. It needs to be sweet, garden-fresh yet chic and edgy. We know, red symbolizes love, life and happiness so what better time to wear it than on the Valentine’s Day. If you want to play safe then you can add red in the form of jewellery and accessories over nude colours. It was all over the catwalks and an investment now will go a long way. It’s time to leave the LBD behind and look for intricate detail that will win you kudos among the fashion cognoscenti. Whether it’s your turn to dazzle at a lunch, or just to make a really big entrance for dinner, a dress that’s up to the occasion is critical. We all love a bit of night time glamour and this winter there is no better way to wear the trend than embracing the super glam trend teamed with super high platforms.

Fashionista Fatima Red is bold. One thing I always advise people is to know your look. You can’t over do red as it is a loud colour. Subtle is the key. Your makeup and accessories should complement the colour, not overshadow it. Fatima has carried the look with perfection, with a hint of black and killer heels. I have always enjoyed reading Fashionista Fatima’s articles as they are informative and fun, truly a breath of fresh air, this is exactly what our industry needs right now.’ Shahzad Raza (AtherShahzad)

For my Pakistan

There are lots of shades of red, orange and pink around so experiment with what works best with your skin tone. For maximum impact, wear head-to-toe and, for extra wowfactor, choose sequins for a show-stopping look. You can wear for day or night as a new alternative to black but If full-on colour-blocking is a step too far for you, tone it down by investing in a ruby or pink top or accessories in precious shades of tangerine or coral. Team with crisp black separates for day and then autumnal oranges and maroons for a rich evening look. Why not opt for a hot red to really put yourself on the fashion radar? Lace dresses are also making a major comeback, so if you’re looking for a classy, vintage style going out dress opt for one of these lovely concoctions another major trend for going out dresses is that of the maxi dress. This is a great style for more casual nights out, such as to a dinner party, barbeque or for a fancy meal, as they suit most body shapes and are perfect for various occasions.

Beauty - An Array of Reds

Lipstick’s most iconic colour was reinvented this season, proving that there are endless ways to wear a dramatic red. With inspirations ranging from pop art expressionisms at Jason Wu to art deco experimentation at Rick Owens to Betty Draper-style elegance at Dior, it’s a great time to go for rouge.

Art

Fantasy, frailty and flowers Ali Azmat is inclined towards figurative painting, but at the same time he has frequently composed his figures with still-life objects

H

By Nadeem Alam

e started with the infertility and barrenness of the body and soul, shown on the faces of eunuchs. He also adopted the whole jargon; the eunuchs used, to title his paintings with all possible relationships of love, hate and loneliness that are commonly associated with this part of the society. He was successful in carrying out the depression and anxiety of untold and unfolded sexuality, which is coupled with the unfulfilled specie around the globe. It was a painting show by Ali Azmat, which; he titled as ‘Moorat’, a term itself to elaborate the aesthetical accomplishments of the eunuchs. Later, Ali went on to explore children, a leap from barrenness to fertility. There, he groped the meaning of horror and loss in the diction of innocence. Although Ali used the symbol of child as a physical continuation related to human beings but the metaphorical expression, he used to convey the element of fear and fragility, in connection with terrorism, became more obvious than the character of a child. Very recently, Ali Azmat displayed an array of small frames; comparatively to his previous work, and contrary to his figurative style, which he is best known for. It was another symbol this time, another metaphor and a unique emblem in the lives of the Muslims, the Holy Quran.

52 I February 12 - 18, 2012

Naturally, Ali Azmat is inclined towards figurative painting, but at the same time he has frequently composed his figures with still-life objects. It is part of a symbolic representation, which most of the figurative artists have been inspired of! Claude Monet composed a woman with parasol, while Vermeer’s famous painting ‘Girl with a Pearl Earning’ is also a good example of this practice. In Pakistani Art, Collin David is considered as the pioneer and the chief exponent of figurative painting. He is also found composing figures with everyday life objects. Shakir Ali added some objects to balance his figural compositions as well, whereas

Mashkoor Raza’s pigeons are famous enough for accompanying his nudes. However, Sadequain with his grotesque thoughts, focused on painting crows

alongside his self-obsessed figures. Ali Azmat in his Moorat Series, exploited the cactus to denote hardships and fruitlessness of the life of eunuchs. They were weapons next time when he came up with ‘Let a Thousand Flowers Bloom’ where his main figures were children of various ages; ranging from infancy to adolescence. It was this show where the painter reacted against the instability and vulnerability of human life in Pakistan under the heavy smoke of terrorism. In this very show, Ali adopted the red-dotted handkerchief, in a symbolic way, which is now largely associated with the Jihadists. Later, he went on to paint the fabric and cloth that have some important ties with our socio-religious lifestyles. In her last exhibition, his concentration was on the variety of Quran covers and casings, known as Ghalaf. In this show, the painter presented a range of Quran covers, arraying from the simple to the lavishly o r n a t e ones.

In his compositions of figures with still-life objects, Ali creates a perspective and depth within and across his frames

In the first two shows where the figurative rendering and facial expressions were involved, the painter helped his frames to attain the everpopular ‘humanistic’ element in his paintings, especially of the modern era. With the help of eyes; deliberately painted barren, tearful or sometimes ironic, the painter conveyed the silent message of hopelessness to the viewers! Moreover, as far as the skills of the painter are concerned, in constructing the human bodies of two diverse shapes and environments, the eunuchs and the children, the mastery of portraying various emotions and the dexterity of painting human anatomy is noteworthy. Another important feature of these two shows was the texture. Ali Azmat, in ‘Moorat’ series, took advantage of his topic in articulating diversity of skin tones and textures of a eunuch and his male lover (Girya). While in the ‘Let a Thousand Flowers Bloom’, he seems to enjoy the rendering of wrinkle-less skin and comparatively smooth texture of the young children and the infants. In ‘Sirat-e Mustaqeem’, the third show, we can see the painter entailing the miscellany of texture through the variety of casing or covers for the Holy Quran (Ghalaf). However, in the last show, Ali Azmat’s style of painting seems to curve away from his figurative expertise and looks as if it is absorbing, as far as the size and perspective go, the effects to of miniature painting style. In all of his figurative work, the three-dimensional modeling of the form has been his main skill. In his compositions of figures with stilllife objects, Ali Azmat creates a perspective and depth within and across his frames. On the other hand, where he has painted an assortment of the Quran Casings, there is no visual depth, and compositional aspect in these small frames and the artist has concentrated more on the diversity of the texture. He has composed all the wrapped books in a very similar way and in the same angle, diversifying them from each other by changing the nature and design of the surface or the wrapping or by adding some flowers, grenades, and leaves; the only linkage with his previously exhibited work.

By Syed Afsar Sajid

N

aya Suraj Nikalta Hai M a n z u r Saqib is a senior poet from Faisalabad. This is his second verse collection in Urdu – after Jugnu Tujhey Talash Karein (2005) – comprising a miscellany of ghazals,

54 I February 12 - 18, 2012

nazms, qat’at and fardiyat composed by him in the intervening years. Shahzad Ahmad, Amjad Islam Amjad and Dr. Aasi Karnali have written introductory notes for the book. Shahzad Ahmad thinks that Manzur Saqib belongs to the ‘reflective’ school of thought in Urdu poetry as his verse seems to convey a message of humanitarianism and

peace. Likewise Amjad Islam Amjad also takes cognizance of the reflective element in his verse reared and geared by an avid pursuit of perfection. (Late) Dr. Aasi Karnali views this poetry in a contemporaneous perspective with little or no affiliation with any previous poetic tradition, and perceives a broad representation of the contemporary problems and situations in it.

The contemporary literary scenario abounds in poetic collections of sorts by both young and old poets. To pick and choose readable poetry out of the available stuff is a difficult task for the common reader of literature. This review is meant to focus on three such collections, two in Urdu and one in Punjabi, on fresh but familiar themes reflecting the spirit of the age In his preface to the book, the poet recounts his faith in human values and his resolve to stir the human conscience on evils and malaises like hate, injustice, falsehood, deceit, repression, discrimination, poverty, illiteracy, prejudice, extremism, sectarianism, war etc. To him the function of poetry, and for that matter literature, is to wed the truth to beauty and thus provide ‘eternal joy’ to the reader. In the process, the poet also creates an aura of self-composure leading to a zestful life, eventually terminated by a peaceful death. Although the intrinsic moral themes permeating his poetry are quite conspicuous, the poet does succeed in sustaining its aesthetic appeal by virtue of his adept treatment of versification in terms of both content and form. His optimism tends to lend credence and vigour to his poetic accent. Here are some examples: Sitam kay baad sitam tha hamari qismat may/K khushk sehra pay barsi hain barishain kya kya ..... Mra qalam mray logon ki ab amanat hai/Qalam ka maqsad-e-awwal badal gaya maira .... Agar tughyanian barh jaain had say/ To phir kat-tay kanaray boltay hain .... Yun to jugnu bhi madava hai andhairay ka magar/Shab-e-tareek to ek mehr-emunawwar mangay Khwab Ju The book is writer and poet Asghar Ali Baloch’s second verse collection in Urdu – comprising his creative work

in the domains of ghazal and nazm. Prof. Dr. Shabbir Ahmad Qadri has contributed its flap. He opines that Asghar is basically a poet of ghazal relying on poetic reverie and sensation as its prime ingredients. Asghar’s poetic journey seems to be self-explorative inasmuch as he seeks to vent his dreams and fantasies in a purely personalized accent. He manipulates the various rhyming schemes (in short measures) adroitly to suit the tenor and tempo of his verse. The growing polarity between fulfilment and desire is a marked feature of Asghar’s ghazal despite his innate propensity to equivocate his dreams. In nazm, however, he changes his stance to objectivity. On the whole, his poetry is fresh but stimulating as the following lines will exemplify: Tairay mizaj-e-sard ki yakh-bastgi ki khair/Dil kay shajar pay baitha parinda thither gaya … Dhool hoti hui masafat ko/Shahr-e-khush posh ki hawa daina … Apni pehchan hosaki na usay/Yun to woh aainay banata hai … To sun aey khwab-ru lamhay/Mray hathon ki raikhaon may/Taira naqsh raushan hai/Tu mairy band ankhon par/Hamesha dastakein day kar/ Kahan ruposh hota hai? Rut Asaan Di Haani Zahid Hasan is a well known bilingual writer, poet and translator with sixteen other publications to his credit. This book carries his Punjabi verse (nazm) composed during the

period 1997-2009. Wajahat Masood and

Ghulam

Hussain

Sajid

have

written the introductory notes included in the book. The former appreciates the poet’s genius and versatility as an artist whereas the latter analyzes the substance of his verse in the light of the reigning socio-cultural, as also aesthetic, trends in Punjabi verse. Both

of

them

agree

that

the

seminal theme of his poems is ‘birha’ – separation and the concomitant passion, pang and pathos. Ghulam Hussain Sajid goes even further to term his verse as the ‘sultan’ of ‘birha’ a la Shiv Kumar Batalvi’s collection of Punjabi poetry selected and christened by Amrita Pritam as ‘Birha Da Sultan’. The subjects of Zahid Hasan’s poems

encompass

reminiscence,

autumn,

separation, loneliness,

truth, war, passion, pathos, decline, introspection,

wish-fulfilment

and

the like. His style derives force from his command of the native idiom and his expressional skills. In his epilogue to the book, he speaks on the vitals of his poetics. To him poetry is an amalgam of truth, beauty, love, tradition and metaphysics. His poems seem to transliterate his poetic creed into words charged with spontaneity, lyrical grace and insight. Thus the book is a good addition to the extant Punjabi literature (verse).
