Designbrief

The style of architecture I want to achieve is parametric architecture. Parametric design is a design method in which features, such as buildingelements and engineering components, are shaped based on algorithmic processes rather than direct manipulation.

The Harbin Opera House occupies 850,000 square feet of space on the specially designated Cultural Island and incorporatesa grand theatre with a capacity of 1,600 and a second, more intimatestage with space for an audience of 400. The sinuous buildingreads as a natural extension of the surrounding habitat, its parametric skin of aluminiumand glass reflecting light in a manner reminiscent of the surrounding water.

These buildingsand structures are examples of parametric architecture

Designing a hotel

I will be creating a hotel in the vibrantand diverse community of Lambeth, located in South London. The city has a palpableenergy that is both inspiring and inviting. With its captivatingblend of art, music, and culture, Lambeth is an ideal location for a hotel that meets the needs and expectationsof modern travelers.

When approachingthis project, I aim to design a hotel that reflects the unique character of Lambeth, while providingguests with a comfortable and memorable experience. The design brief for this project is centered around creating an inspiring and invitingspace that reflects the warmth and vibrancy of the local community.

The hotel will feature a contemporary and innovativedesign, with a focus on incorporatinglocal materials, artwork, and cultural elements. The interior design of the hotel will draw inspiration from the vibrant colors, livelymusic, and uniquearchitecture that characterize Lambeth. The design will also be functional, ensuring that the hotel provides all the necessary amenities that modern travelers require. One of the main features of the hotel will be its community-focused approach. The hotel will strive to foster a strong sense of community within its walls and with its surrounding neighborhood. To accomplish this, the hotel will feature a variety of spaces that are open to both guests and the public.

Lambeth, located in South London, is a vibrant and diverse community. This area is known for its rich cultural heritage, bustling high streets, and great transport links. Whether you're a resident or just visiting, you'll find something to love about Lambeth. The area boasts an eclectic mix of restaurants, shops, and venues, making it a populardestination for foodies, shoppers, and music lovers alike. In Lambeth, you'll discover a friendly and welcoming atmosphere that is full of opportunitiesfor learning, networking, and entertainment. With its easy access to central London and a variety of local attractions, Lambeth is a great place to live, work, or visit!

It boasts of several excellent schools. The shopping options in Upper Marsh are diverse, ranging from independentstores and boutiques to big retail chains, ensuring that you will find everything you need. There are also plenty of popular restaurants and cafes in the area

Location

Design research and sketches

This is the wigwam motel in Arizona USA. This buildingis an example of programatic architecture. This is the typical American retro styled motel. However the design of the rooms invitepeople because of its uniqueness. this may be an aspect I want to add to my design

I love how this structure is dedicated to the history of Qatar. It’s architecture symbolises the desert and it’s silent and eternal dimension, but also the modern aspects.

Another thing about this structure is how it connects people from around the world. It has become a tourist attraction due to its simplistic and interesting architecture. It helps bring society together. This contour shape is something I want to explore towards a final outcome of my projects

Contour lines

I began by placinga simple sine wave on a vertical, flat surface.I then created many contour lines that will roughly depict how the shape will appear. Finally,I filled in the blanks and produced a parametric feature of the sine wave in three dimensions.

This feature could be employed as a building's roof design, an interior sealing element, or even a wall pattern on the building'soutside. This kind of construction has also been utilised as a paintingor prop that is hung on a flat wall. I could make the entire wall look like that instead of doing that. I could accomplish this by designing a tile that would have this form and extend the entire length of the wall, as seen in the image on the left.

Contour lines building ideas

I have attempted to make this as a model to show how it should look, since I have explored the contour lines and practical applicationsthat would be availableif I used them. Using SketchUp, I was able to create a parametric shape similar to that of the previous slide.

Giving my model contour lines

I drew what resembles contour lines over my model, to make it look a lot more interesting. To enhance the model's features and add texture, Plus, it's a great way to experiment with different techniques.

Parametric Model design

This 3D printed model will sit on top of my Hotel model. It will be supported by metal beams to hold up the structure. It adds the the parametric theme

Creating circle intersections

Stacking two circle intersection

In two imaginary points, a degenerate pointor two separate points it may be possible to connect two circles. A line known as a radical circle is defined by the intersection of two circles. When three circles come together in a single point, the intersection of their pairwise radical lines, known as the radical center, is their point of intersection.

Here is the Hotel with the roof raised to show the layoutof the top floor

This is what my final model should look like. I utilised the parametric technique to create the model’s layers. The first layerof my model was the foundation. It provided a solid base for all the other layers to rest upon and was the substrate on which the entire buildingwas built. The model at hand is a carefullycrafted computational representation that characterises the behaviourof a system or phenomenon based on a set of predefined parameters. This model has been designed using a rigorous methodology, taking into account relevantscientific principles, empirical data, and mathematical techniques. Its structure is composed of interdependentvariablesthat interactwith one another in a precise and predictableway to generate outputs that can be analysed and interpreted within a given context.

Sketch up model and elevations

Elevationsplaya significant role in making buildings look better. By raising a buildingup from ground level, it can stand out and become more visuallystriking. Moreover, elevationscan highlightthe architectural detailsand features that otherwise might not be noticeable.A well-designed elevation can add depth, texture, and personalityto a building, making it more appealingand attractiveto the eye. Not only does an elevation enhance the overall appearanceof the building, but it also adds a sense of grandeur and importance to the structure.

As we move towards a more data-driven approach to design solutions, parametric architecture has emerged as an essential tool for architects. It enables designers to account for multiple variables across a project, leading to more accurate design solutions. The application of parametric architecture in hotel design has been especially useful, allowing me to create a unique space tailored to the hotel's site-specific and functional requirements.

With that said, I am thrilled to share with you my parametric model of a hotel. The design merges locally inspired architecture with contemporary aesthetics, all while optimizing natural light and maximizing space efficiency. I am confident that the model addresses all the requirements that would be expected of a modern hotel, including functionality, accessibility, and safety. To evaluate the model, I propose a thorough review of the design from all stakeholders. This will include a thorough analysis of the design in terms of its aesthetics, functionality, and any potential deficiencies. Any feedback, whether it be positive or negative, will be taken constructively and used to refine the design further. Additionally, the project's budget will be taken into account when evaluating the feasibility of the project design and costs.Overall, I am excited to see the potential of this design, and I believe it meets all the necessary standards for a successful hotel project.
