possible topics THE CONCEPT OF TIME AND HOW IT PASSED BY US

THE IDEAS OF MEMORIES AND THE LOSS OF MEMORIES

ADDICTION AND HOW IT CONSUMES US

WHY THIS TOPIC? When considering my topic I wanted to do something that I had a personal connection to, but something that I wanted to learn more about. Addiction within my family could be seen as a “traditional” addiction caused by pain and growing up with substances like alcohol and drugs. I wanted to find a different perspective on addiction within different communities and causes as well as different types of addiction.

PERSONAS Evan Lawrence

David Lander

Evan is a 18 year old who is a senior in high school and is applying to colleges out of state and cannot wait to have new experiences. He spends a lot of his time playing video games and completing some of his school work, as he isn’t super into school. He plays club soccer during his free time so he can get an athletic scholarship to college. He lives in Tulsa, Oklahoma in a wealthier suburb. At his mom’s house he has a large dog that he plays with when he isn’t gaming. He wears Nike and athletic brands because of his love soccer and being athletic, he is able to be comfortable and active. He drives a 2019 Honda Civic that he has gotten in minor accidents in. He has a girlfriend who is also a senior in high school. They spend their majority of their time together.

David is 45 years old and works as a welder outside of Cincinnati, Ohio. He has lived in the same suburb his whole life. He works three to four days a week and has two kids but they live in Michigan with their mother and sees them a couple of times a year for Holidays and over the summer. He drives a 1992 Ford Truck to get him to his job and home. His daily routine is waking up at ten in the morning and going to work at ten-thirty and works until seven. After work he turns on TV to any sports team he enjoys and makes dinner. He doesn’t have any hobbies, so he will watch TV and drink and take opioids after work until he falls asleep and then barely wakes up for work the next morning. Occasionally, he will hang out with high school friends In his home town at a bar once every couple of months and watch sports games or play pool. He is lower class and works enough to provide for himself, but he comes from a wealthy family who he no longer speaks to. He usually shops at his local general store or market to get basic foods and clothes but doesn’t spend a lot of money usually.

Evan has been affected by addiction in terms of his environment: his parents divorced when he was very young so has always lived in an environment of travelling back and forth and in a blended home. His father, Eric, has struggled with personality irregularities, childhood trauma, and emotional displacement; looking to alcohol allows him to forget about his issues. Constant drinking further allows Eric to lash out of Evan creating physical and emotional abuse creating stress on their relationship and making Evan uncomfortable and weary of his environment.

David grew up as an addict from an early age at 15. He abused drugs and alcohol, but was able to make it through high school. After high school he increased his drug and alcohol use and lost connection with his family. After that he stopped using and went to trade school to be a welder and meet his ex-wife who was a secretary at a company he worked at after trade. After he had his first kid he started using again and then him and his wife got divorced after they had their second kid. He continues using because of his early age of using.

Everything You Think You Know About Addiction is Wrong

about

entry

previous

What really causes addiction -- to everything from cocaine to smart-phones? And how can we overcome it? Johann Hari has seen our current methods fail firsthand, as he has watched loved ones struggle to manage their addictions. He started to wonder why we treat addicts the way we do -- and if there might be a better way. As he shares in this deeply personal talk, his questions took him around the world, and unearthed some surprising and hopeful ways of thinking about an age-old problem.
