A U D I E N C E P E RS O N A Her name is Aniela, you were best friends with her in middle school, but once you switched schools, you lost track of her. You knew that her family immigrated from Mexico but didn’t ask many questions besides where the scar on her arm was from, and she said a shot she had to get when she came to the US. She was kind, smar t and pretty, and spoke excellent English, you both went to the movies together and hung out at lunch and every class you had together. You wouldn’t know that she was a dreamer, that she was fighting to stay in the United States as Trump announced that he was trying to end the DACA program. You wouldn’t know that she pays a DACA fee every year to have a permit to work, have a driver ’s license and contribute to America’s economy as she fights to climb for the American dream. You wouldn’t question whether she was a citizen or not, or whether she is a DACA par ticipant. She was your middle school best friend, and you wouldn’t even think to question her citizenship, as you were both the same.
