BETWEEN EARTH + SKY GRADUATE DESIGN STUDIO BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA SPRING 2013
painting lighting model studies nestled in the bay area hills, the gallery is a place for the viewing and storage of painting and paper works by the abstract expressionist richard diebenkorn. his oversized works draw from ideas of site-specific landscapes and localized atmospheric and experiential sensations of the cities in which he lived, requiring a gallery which provides a neutral backdrop for these contextual pieces while respecting the character of its own california location. 5
the requirement of natural toplighting for the paintings pushes the galleries to the upper level, creating a path of vertical ascension reflected outside in the terraced gardens. 7

TENTATIVE RIGIDITY GRADUATE DESIGN STUDIO SELMA, ALABAMA FALL 2012
alabama has a long history of cotton production, manifested through textile works such as the gee’s bend quilts. the project capitalizes upon this resource by instilling a new economy of high fashion which draws designers, visitors, and residents alike to a riverfront site for large scale events throughout the year. between shows the site serves as a public park and residence for designers who stay in selma to be inspired by the culture and natural beauty of the historic south. 11

500’
the approach to landscape manipulation comes from the processes of cutting, folding, and pleating used to structure textile fashion works. these techniques create a landscape which creates pockets of space folded into the larger context. 13
the rise and fall of the landscape architecture allows for rooms to be inserted along bands of circulation which move from city toward nature. the gently undulating ground plane creates a spectacle of procession along the site, drawing from the inherent drama of high fashion and runway events. 15
THE ODD LOT GRADUATE DESIGN STUDIO ST LOUIS, MISSOURI FALL 2013
lot dimensions 8’ 120’ inspired by the work of artist gordon matta clark, the project embraces an odd, residual space resulting from an abandoned infrastructural zone and reimagines it as an integrated architectural experience. a dissolving gridded structure responds to the tectonics of adjacent railway bridges. stereotomic masses carved within the grid create an architecture which is at once heavy and light, object and experience, that manifests itself as an inherent member of its context. 17

WOODLAND EXTRUSIONS DIGITAL FABRICATION PROJECT FALL 2012
multiple geometries of the formal precedent, a pinecone, are extrapolated and extruded to create elongated forms. these forms are then manipulated into complex formal itineraries. in the first part, the extrusion is bent and then rotated to reimagine the formal aesthetic presented in the precedent. 21
a simplified geometry based on the pinecone is taken and extruded to columnar forms. these forms are connected via cross-ties along their gently undulating surfaces. gaps in between these top pieces are extruded downward to create suspended forms and attached in a similar manner. this construction is imagined as a superstructure of concrete and glass which would create an architectural repose in the woodland setting from which its formal precedent is taken.

METROPOLITAN VOYEURISM UNDERGRADUATE DESIGN STUDIO DESIGN PARTNER: CRISTINA MORENO NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK FALL 2011
the design of the west chelsea entertainment hub disregards all notions of the rigid and formally defined literal edge to facilitate human movement in a concrete city. the hub is a cultural entertainment anchor in a transitional neighborhood traversed by the popular high line. it explores the urban conditions of the metropolitan context as well as the implications of design as spectacle within its surroundings. 25

relationships between public and private areas are challenged through the specific architectural moments, as traditional ideas of isolation and access in relation to exclusivity are dominated by an urban sense of voyeurism and a maintaining of views between areas of different program. the project acknowledges that urban void is the underlying element in social relations within the urban form. it does not try to control the experience of the individual but allows for option, chances, and opportunities for the individual to wander and create his own experience. 27

SHIFTING HORIZONS UNDERGRADUATE DESIGN STUDIO IMAGINED DESERTSCAPE SPRING 2010
the topography of the imagined desertscape generates the linear shifts of the earth-sculpters’ studio. an exploration of the horizontal subtleties of the desert leads to geometrical analyses and an angular compound emerges, implanted within its surroundings and taking full advantage of the surrounding open area as a canvas for the work of the earth-sculpters. 31
