Process + Sketching The design process was explained to me as a loop. You take three steps forward and two steps back, working on larger concepts down to smaller details and then back again. Sketching is my way of working through the design process, brainstorming and conveying ideas about a project.
Smart House first floor plan ground floor plan
Smart House is the house of the future. Set in 2111, this house is fully automated, monitoring your nutrition, sleep, mood, and activity through a wristband worn by the tenants. The overall concept of this project was “You don’t even have to think.” Begun in second year and continued in third year, this project was created with hand drawing and physical model building and evolved into 3DS Max renderings and edited in Photoshop.

second floor plan
Destination Disney is a retail and restaurant project that was completed in third year design studio that called for a complete interior renovation of an old warehouse. The structure of this project was built in Revit and the materials and lighting were done using 3DS Max.
The three concepts chosen for Destination Disney were juxtaposition, verticality and layering. The verticality was taken literally and started to warp from just a straight line into a more whimsical swirl and then further to the anchor of the project being Mickey from Fantasia. The magical fiber optic lights swirl around sorcerer Mickey up and out through the cone of the facade and roof. Mickey’s cliff was placed so he could be viewed from all angles whether viewed by people on the street or sitting around the upper mezzanine. A main idea that developed was the use of a full LED light wall on the back of the dining area. This light wall would fade in to show early concept sketches being drawn and then animated across the screen. During the project, the goal of amazing people of every age was kept in mind to reflect the goals of Walt Disney Studios.

Flow by Studio 435
‘Flow’ is a group project that is sponsored by Herman Miller. The goal was to design and build a new desk system for the distance learner in the work space. The groups consisted of tweleve members designing storage, surface and seating. It was a semester long project calling for not only computer models but also a full scale model for presentation. Description on: Design a “near environment” distance-learning, graduate design student’s studio workspace workstation to be installed in a professional design office/studio. Problem: Office systems and distance education centers do not address the needs of design students; using more supplies, surfaces, and collaboration, these students require a more specified learning center. Human need: To gain knowledge in design, to reignite a passion for design, and to achieve higher self fulfillment (...and $$$...).

technology is a given; want it to be fast and efficient need individual attention in the classroom; expect feedback and direction
Our ‘Vission’ is to create a personal destination that encourages appropriate collaboration, incorperates the most effective technology, and promotes efficancy, in order for design students to gain new knowledge and skills, to reingnite their passion for design, and ultimately to gain higher self fullfillment. -Studio 435
