The Trinity - a Divine Mystery. Trinity Sunday was, this year, celebrated on Father’s Day. We have little trouble thinking of God as ‘Father’- as a benign (though, perhaps, also strict) parent. But the biblical concept embraced much more than that. The father was seen as the one who gave life, the mother as merely the carrier. So God the Father gives us the understanding of God as Creator, bringing and holding all life in being. But Jesus introduces us to God as ‘Abba’; offering a much more intimate understanding of the father role. He invites us not to just worship God from afar but to enter into a real and living relationship with him: one where you can know and be known. And it is Jesus himself who makes that possible. It is through him that we can know the Divine Being more intimately. For Jesus was both fully human - and fully divine. As the prologue to St. John’s gospel tells us, ‘In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God …. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. … The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world” Jesus Christ points us towards God and yet also is God. So when we enter into a close relationship with him, we are brought into the closer presence of the divine source of all life. In knowing Jesus, we can know ourselves to be fully loved and accepted by God the Father. We are brought into the fullness of life: both here and for all eternity. But we also know that the presence of Jesus here on earth was constrained by both time and place. So, Jesus promised his disciples

that the Holy Spirit will come upon them and lead them in His way. “He will glorify me; will take what is mine and declare it to you.” (John 1.13) The Holy Spirit empowers and sustains not just creation but also discipleship. The power of God that ‘moved over the face of the waters’ at the beginning of creation is the same power that enables us to follow him today. We can see, then, that God has, throughout scripture been experienced as three persons in one: as ‘Trinity.’ Something which our limited, rational human minds, have trouble fully understanding. But we don’t need to understand in any scientific way. For if we could explain the divine nature in mere human terms, he would cease to be God. For all words are only partial truths whilst God is Absolute Truth. The Trinity is not to be explained away; it is to be fully experienced. What really matters is not our intellectual understanding but our willingness to believe that which we say in our worship every Sunday. “We believe in one God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.” Not three separate ‘persons’ but all bound together in One Unity. Let us enjoy the mystery of God as Trinity. Let us rejoice that this Triune God loves and sustains us more than we can possibly imagine. Then let us commit ourselves to go out and love in the same way as God loves us; building up relationships in our homes, our community and our world. In his name: Trinity.

Builth Ministry Area - Colwyn Dear Friends (as in the Christmas and Easter seasons) or in more severe penance (as in Advent and Lent), but in watchfulness and expectation of the Second Coming of Christ.
This is the time of the year in which we celebrate Ordinary Time. Because the term ordinary in English most often means something that's not special or distinctive, many people think that Ordinary Time refers to parts of the calendar of the Anglican Church that are unimportant. Even though the season of Ordinary Time makes up most of the Liturgical year, the fact that Ordinary Time refers those periods that fall outside of the major liturgical seasons reinforces this impression. Yet Ordinary Time is far from unimportant or uninteresting. It is called "ordinary" not because it is common but simply because the weeks of Ordinary Time are numbered. The Latin word ordinalis, which refers to numbers in a series, stems from the Latin word ordo, from which we get the English word order. Thus, the numbered weeks of Ordinary Time, in fact, represent the ordered life of the Church—the period in which we live our lives neither in feasting
The normal liturgical colour for Ordinary Time is green. This is when we have green vestments and altar cloths which traditionally have been associated with the time after Pentecost, the period in which the Church founded by the risen Christ and enlivened by the Holy Spirit began to grow and to spread the Gospel to all nations. July and August are a time for rest and relaxation for yourselves, your children and your families. My prayer for you all is that you will all have time to enjoy yourselves, to relax and recharge your batteries and no matter where you go, or what you do, may God be with you. Blessings to you all.
Linda

Builth Ministry Area - Erwood & Painscastle Dear All,
This may allow our holiday period to be a time to relax and nurture the sometimes neglected core that is obscured by the labels that we accumulate around ourselves - boss, employee, husband, wife, mum, dad, carer….. we are all well acquainted with the perceived roles and titles that we carry through life. This time of the Christian year is the time for asking Christ to naturally lift your heart towards the place where your deepest longings are realised - through our humanity within nature and also the divine nature of our humanity. Simply worship him, love him and rest in him. The Feast of the Transfiguration of Our Lord on the sixth of August emphasises the clarity of connecting with the, often neglected, divine part of ourselves and serves to reaffirm the strength of our relationship with Jesus. Within the mystery of the story, the transfiguration of Jesus is presenting a simple truth that this is revelation of Jesus as he truly is, the Son of God. At this awesome moment for Peter, James and John, nothing of the nature of Jesus is hidden from them and his kinship with God is made apparent. This is a dramatic mingling of the divinity and humanity of Jesus Christ that the disciples find difficult to comprehend, yet if Jesus is fully human and a model of the perfected humanity that we aspire toward then may we infer that if we stand before God as we truly are – as His beloved children, then may we also may be transfigured?
Summer is passing quickly. May this season be the time to experience a sacramental view of all things. As we absorb nature’s greenery, from the shrubbery and trees in the gardens to the stretching, working fields and distant beacons, may we respond to creation around us with a breath of joy that places us into God’s care. Summer is a time for the heart; for learning the lesson of abundance, if you cannot feel the life of God’s creation at her fullest then you cannot live it. Love, as a unifying factor, may provide us with insights into the lives of the major Saints that have their feast days in July; Thomas on the 3rd, Benedict on the 11th and James (The Greater) on the 25th . Thomas was so filled with love for Jesus that he was anxious not to fully believe the wonderful news of his resurrection until he saw Jesus for himself. When he did encounter Jesus, Thomas did not waste time putting his hands into the wounds of Jesus but simply said the ultimate profession of faith, “My Lord and my God.” This speaks of so much love. Benedict, the founder of western monasticism, at the beginning of his Rule says quite simply, “ This is advice from a father who loves you.” The Rule speaks much of obedience but all the teaching to the monks is given within this invocation of love. James is the first Apostle to be martyred; the first of them to follow the way to death for love of his Lord. (Acts 12:1-2); We need to love ourselves as God loves us. August does bring us a natural caesura in the flow of the year.
I hope you may all find some ‘holiday’ time this Summer. True refreshment may be found if we bring back to our responsibilities all the insights that come to us in times of true relaxation. May we all find renewal in Christ. Be drawn into his love for all people so that you will be counted among the Saints in glory. Blessings as always. Father Paul. XX

Humphrey used to attract a large congregation from neighbouring villages and further afield, who liked the Book of Common Prayer, Humphrey’s inclusive style and his idiosyncratic preaching. He started the leaving of out refreshments for walkers and visitors in the Church, which we still do. He preached at the Newchurch Chapel, where he was held him in great affection – they showed great understanding when he descended into dementia. Humphrey and Helga were also regular attenders at the Quaker meeting House in Almeley, where they treated him with similar kindness.
Obituary: The Revd Dr Humphrey Fisher Humphrey Fisher, born 1933 and died 20th May this year. In the month of the Kilvert Pilgrimage – a good time to reflect on the life of its cofounder. Humphrey was buried at Newchurch, next to Helga on 31st May. His family had organised a wonderful and musical service, and mourners came from all parts of the country and overseas.
There are many stories that be told of Humphrey and Helga, but there is no space here. Their company was warm and good humoured, and there was always a delightful welcome at Rose Cottage.
Humphrey retired came to Newchurch after a very distinguished career at SOAS. Before that he had been educated at a Quaker and Christian colleges in the USA and at Harvard and Oxford Universities. He had befriended and studied the Almaddiya, a persecuted peaceful Muslim sect in Nigeria, managed a farm for Palestinian refugees in Jordan and done missionary and academic research in Sierra Leone.
Having spent nearly all his life in other countries, Humphrey was not attuned to the niceties of British social intercourse. He could put his foot in it and get on the wrong side of people. His friend and supporters, however, well outnumbered the others. When we needed to raise the £5000 to restore the Church bells, he wrote to his friends and the money was forthcoming Dementia took hold over a long period, hastened by Helga’s unexpected death in 2013. The congregation dwindled and Humphrey slowly disengaged from the life of the church.
Humphrey, already an Anglican lay reader, was urged by our Rector to put himself forward for ordination, and went for pastoral training to a Roman Catholic college in London. The Church in Wales at first hesitated to ordain Humphrey, who seemed to have an imperfect grasp of the workings of that Church, and whose views and background were unorthodox. The Bishop, after due consideration, intervened, and Humphrey became NSM at Newchurch.
At SOAS, Humphrey had gone out of his way to ensure that overseas students, disoriented in a new country and institution, got his full help and support. Humphrey’s lifelong concern had been the plight of the displaced and the persecuted, and this concern remained with him to the end, as did his Faith. 12
Congratulations to Janet Day and Meinir Ronicle who were ordained as Deacons on Sunday. Meinir will be serving as Curate in the Benefice of Gwastedyn and Janet joins us in Builth.
