Behold What You Are, Become What You See – A reflection on the transfiguration. The term "suspension of disbelief", was coined in 1817 by the poet and aesthetic philosopher Samuel Taylor Coleridge, who suggested that if a writer could infuse a "human interest and a semblance of truth" into a fantastic tale, the reader would suspend judgement concerning the implausibility of the narrative. It is now employed to great effect by the film industry, with the aid of special effects, to convince us that space travel is as simple as climbing on a bus, that vampires and werewolves live amongst us, and that apparently human characters exhibit super-human powers. In a similar fashion, the readings surrounding the transfiguration speak of the unbelievable and yet through faith they are, and must be, believable. In the 2 Corinthians reading Paul is referring directly to the reading from Exodus. What he’s doing is giving us a rare chance to see one biblical author doing a thorough exegesis of another. The word exegesis in this context means that the author is critically giving an explanation or interpreting a piece of the biblical text. Paul is referring to the Exodus reading, but he is playing rather loosely in his exegesis of it. In Exodus, there is no suggestion that the people of Israel are to be blamed for the veiling of Moses’ face. This shining, unbelievably dazzling, diamond like aftereffect of Moses’ face is because of his encounter with God. But Paul implies that the veil is a sign of the Israelites determination not to see what is offered to them. He suggests that they deliberately choose to put a barrier between God and themselves, and that the barrier remains until Jesus removes it. Christians, he urges, have had the veil removed by the Lord, the Spirit, and must now learn to live and speak openly. Luke, our careful storyteller, is meticulous with his dates and history, but at the same

time he shows the most delicate skill in weaving together the believable and the unbelievable, the real and seemingly unreal. In this, he displays something of the film director’s touch. The Christian story is full of unbelievable things, such as the virgin birth, Jesus’ miracles and his resurrection. Yet unlike the film director, who simply has to make that which is untrue believable, the greatest and most difficult task of every Christian is to convince others – and even ourselves sometimes – that the unbelievable is true. This is what the transfiguration is all about and it comes at a vital turning point in Luke’s Gospel. Jesus has just ended his relatively popular ministry in Galilee and is about to start a journey to Jerusalem. At this crucial point Jesus and three of his disciples go up a mountain to pray. While Jesus is praying, Luke tells us, his appearance is altered, and his clothes become dazzling white. No surprise then that the disciples don’t seem to know whether they’re awake or asleep. Its purpose though is to clarify Jesus’ identity and to cement his credentials for the task ahead. We will stand at the foot of the cross, and in front of the empty tomb, and reflect deeply on what they mean. Faith is seldom a question of lining up the facts and making a cold-hearted decision. Luke wants us to comprehend the breadth of Jesus’ identity: to see who he really is, and what he means for each of us here today. However rational and level-headed we are, we all have those moments when God asks us to declare our faith in his impossible story. Let us pray for God’s gift of passion and imagination so that when that moment comes, we will be able to respond with words of wonder and worship. This is an edited version of a Sermon provided by Rev. Linda Watson for which we offer her our sincere thanks.

skills we have been given by the Spirit (I Corinthians 12:7-11).
September is a time of changes, it’s a time of beginnings and of starting something new. We can see this with our children who will be starting school for the first time, others will be starting back to school with a new teacher and there are those, who as leavers in July, begin at a new school and so start a new chapter of their lives.
Please could all our readers consider whether or not they are using their skills to the full. If you understand figures, you may be the one we are looking for to act as our new Benefice Treasurer or as treasurer of St Matthew’s Llanelwedd or St Bridget’s Llansantffraed. We in the Colwyn Benefice need your help because without treasurers we cannot function. Please think hard and at this time of change come forward and help us to rise to this challenge and overcome it.
There is also a big change for us because David Anderson, our much-loved Benefice Warden and Treasurer, died last month. He did so much for our Benefice as Benefice Churchwarden and Benefice Treasurer, for the local community as Chair of the Red Kite Credit Union, in promoting saving amongst our schoolchildren through visits to our schools and in supporting our farmers through the Farm Community Network. David had skills and he used them to full. As such he followed St Paul’s exhortations in his epistles to go out and use the
Blessings to you all.

Builth Ministry Area – Buallt The Annual Churches’ BBQ……
Our annual BBQ took place in the grounds of the Riverside Community Centre. It was well attended, and the weather was kind. Many thanks to Derek and Doug for applying their culinary skills so deftly at the BBQ and to those who brought delicious salads and desserts. Ivor acted as bar-tender and Laura & David Childs provided the quiz, for much head scratching and merriment in equal measure. Many thanks to Valery for selling tickets and keeping track of funds. Thanks also to Ted who ran the raffle in his special hat. Your support, as always was appreciated and this happy occasion raised £300.
Visiting Preacher…… One of the few enjoyable parts of an interregnum has been welcoming a guest preacher once a month. On 21st July it was Archbishop John’s turn to visit, so we took the opportunity to have a group photo. Yet again, Ted has provided an excellent record of the event. It’s a mystery how he manages to take a photo and appear in it. How does he do it? I like to think of it as a small miracle……..

Builth Ministry Area - Erwood & Painscastle Dear All, This year is passing so quickly. As we approach our celebrations of Harvest, our place in God’s created world is, once more, much in our minds. September is a month of transition. We dwell on the passing summer while we prepare for the forthcoming autumn and winter and we take reassurance from the steady rhythms of the continuing Ordinary Season of the year in preparation for the excitement of Advent. Toward the end of the year our hearts will lift with fervour and wonder at the mystery of the Incarnation of Christ. Now, in the warmth of the dying embers of summer, let us simply rest in His comfortable arms, where we will find a home for our sometimes tired and troubled hearts. With Creation in mind, let us reflect on the Autumnal Ember Days of September. The Ember Days were traditionally four sets of three days of fasting and prayer surrounding the agricultural practice of acknowledging the changing of the seasons. They coincide approximately with our Christian festivals of St Lucy (13th December) Pentecost and Holy Cross Day (14th September). The Spring/Lent Ember Day was added later. This year, in the Church in Wales, the Autumnal three days fall on Wednesday the 25th, Friday the 27th and Saturday the 28th of September. Modern Catholic practice has no obligatory recognition of the Ember Days but as Anglicans we may recognise that they remain part of the unique spiritual tradition of our islands that is linked so much to our agricultural heritage and the vagaries of the climate here in the North West of Europe.
We are creatures wedded to the land (the root of humility is of course humus – earth). As we approach Harvest, the Ember Days remind us how our own Christian faith may be part of keeping our working link with creation alive. Within the hardship and anxiety that is, often, part of our relationship with the land and all God’s creatures, we may be sure that all our hard work draws us closer to God and he does love us for serving him through our care for his creation. Amidst all this gentle reflection in September there is still excitement to draw us even further towards Advent. We celebrate the Feast of the Birthday of the Blessed Virgin Mary on the eighth. To deepen the mystery and pull us beyond Advent to Easter, we have Holy Cross Day on the 14th. The heavenly realm truly beckons as the month closes with the Feast of Michael and All Angels on the twenty-ninth. Within creation, the Archangels are truly servants of a loving God and it is worth getting to know their working power through your prayers and meditations. Michael (The Godlike) is ready to protect us against evil, Gabriel (The Potency of God) greets us with the water of life to refresh us on our journey and Raphael (The Healer of God ) stands prepared to heal our wounds. May your faith deepen through all the transitions of life. and the coming Harvest be a season of abundance every way.

Re-dedication of St.David's Church, Llanwrtyd.
Always very popular for weddings, given its beautiful tranquil setting, the profile of the church will now be improved through the provision of new display boards, production
Archbishop John recently held a special service on Wednesday 7th August to rededicate the “Old Parish Church” of St. David's, Llanwrtyd, a church whose history dates from the 6th Century, at a site believed to have been chosen by St.David himself. Known locally as the “Old Parish Church” the site was founded after the synod held at Llanddewibrefi in 519AD. Famous clergy associated with the church, in far more recent times, include Theophilus Evans (16931767), William Williams (Pantycelyn, 17171791) and “Kilsby Jones” (1813-1889), the latter being buried in the churchyard. Rev. Evans was vicar from 1738 of various local churches, with William Williams being curate from 1740 to 1743, but with strong Methodist views he was removed and not recommended for ordination and became an itinerant preacher (to become the most famous of all Welsh hymnwriters).
of brochures and creation of a new church website. At the service a new altar cloth was dedicated, this having been designed by pupils at the local Primary School, Ysgol Dolafon. The service was held by candlelight as there is no electricity (which adds to its ambience), there is no running water, nor currently any heating. Archbishop John said it was “a privilege to have such a beautiful building in such a beautiful setting” and that “this is a place of welcome, a place of calm, a place where the grace and truth of God made visible in Jesus can be touched and felt”.
Restoration of the interior and especially the exterior of the church involved completion of a £152,000 project and renovation started in September 2018 following some three and a half years of planning and fundraising, funds largely
