RIETVELD ARCHITECTS NEW YORK 7

Introduction Architects Margaret and Rijk Rietveld are design partners in the New York based architectural firm of Rietveld Architects LLP. Established in 1993, Rietveld Architects was originally located on the 70th floor of the Empire State Building and relocated eight years later to the Film Center Building in Midtown Manhattan. The firm is an international architecture practice dedicated to the integration of modern European design sensibility with American ingenuity. Working together, Margaret and Rijk are responsible for the conceptual design and execution of a wide range of projects that include offices, headquarters, schools, libraries, affordable housing, residential towers, villas, office and apartment interiors and master-planning. Built projects consist of 10 stand alone projects as well as 10 American interior designs. An additional 350,000 square feet of multi-use projects are in various stages of construction. Six designs have received a total of nine SARA and AIA Honor and Merit Design Awards. Rietveld Architects is a U.S. Green Building Council member and a pioneer in the use of green building technology.

Margaret As an architecture student focused on European modernism, Margaret Rietveld was fortunate to intern abroad for an established firm in Basel. After graduating from college and building upon her experience in Switzerland, she lived in European cities rich with design culture. Margaret Rietveld worked in a number of architecture practices over a period of years, first in Amsterdam, then Berlin and finally Paris. During this eye opening experience, she learned of the political stakes involved in realizing complex modern design with a historical context and pursued proficiency in Dutch, German, and French languages. She considers her work in the Paris office of I.M.Pei and partners on the Agrandissement Le Grand Louvre to be a defining experience. Prior to practicing in New York, Margaret Rietveld worked for five years abroad, joining the firm of Herman Hertzberger in Amsterdam immediately upon receiving a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Virginia Polytechnic and State University. She also practiced in Berlin, Germany with the firm of Ingeborg Kuhler on a museum in Mannheim before joining the Paris office of I.M. Pei. Margaret Rietveld received her Masters of Architecture degree from Columbia University in 1987. She has lectured at MIT, Columbia University, Virginia Tech, American College in Paris and Parsons School of Design. She is a registered architect in New York and the Netherlands, and a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects.

10

Rijk Rijk Rietveld grew up working in his father’s architecture office. He spent his formative years at the Academy of Building Arts in Amsterdam. To fulfill an academic internship, he chose the office of Herman Hertzberger and remained there for many years where he eventually became the head designer of an international practice. Rijk RIetveld worked on the design of the Utrecht Concert Building, the Ministry of Social Affairs, and the Montessori School in Amsterdam, among others. Being part of the Structuralist group of architects with Aldo van Eyck and Jan Rietveld was an especially memorable experience. Rijk Rietveld worked for twelve years in the Amsterdam office of Herman Hertzberger before moving to New York. He became an Associate Partner at Richard Meier and Partners in 1992 and was in charge of the City Hall in Den Haag, as well as Canal Plus in Paris, and Compaq Headquarters in Houston. Rijk Rietveld has lectured at man European and American Universities including Berkley, Sci-Arc, MIT, Penn, and Columbia. He was an Assistant Professor at Virginia Tech and is a registered architect in New York and the Netherlands.

Sustainable Design Rietveld Architects is singularly dedicated to the development of environmentally progressive architecture, merging leading edge sustainable design concepts and technology with bold design expressions. Rietveld Architects’ approach to green building has been shaped by the international perspective of the firm’s work, allowing partners Margaret and Rijk Rietveld to draw upon a breadth of ideas from architects, governments, analysts and theorists from across the globe to develop environmentally sustainable designs. For example, throughout the Netherlands and northern Europe, generally high energy costs necessitate high energy efficiency. To create buildings that save energy has been a long standing goal in professional design in these areas. While this focus is, in some part, motivated by altruism and responsible thinking, it is actuated by practical financial concerns. Long-term thinking is required of building owners and investors who must recognize the eventual value in an increased upfront investment in modern green building technology. Generally, building owners are willing to shoulder the initial financial burden if energy saving costs can demonstrably earn back the extra investment in seven years or less. With energy prices currently at one-third of those in Europe, construction in the United States leaves little room to recoup an increased initial investment in green building technology but there is new hope in the emerging political environment that legislation will someday reduce the energy waste in United States’ buildings to a par with their European counterparts. Presently, the LEED system in America is the only voluntary system for integrating sustainable design early into the design process itself. LEED is an acronym for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. There is a seven part list of

12

criteria to inform the design for new construction in order to earn points for a bronze, silver, gold or platinum level accreditation. There are means of independent audit and systems integration such as Comissioning to ensure that mechanical, electrical and plumbing system (MEP) will work together and provide the planned environmental benefits. In Northern European construction, walls are not simultaneously exposed to interior and exterior air. This innovation absent in most American buildings contributes to the overall cost effectiveness of green design. There is however, a negative consequence to the total separation of inside and outside walls in Northern European buildings. The outside walls remain cold and wet longer than they would if exposed to a building’s interior heat. Therefore, building exteriors accumulate dirt more rapidly than their United States counterparts and require more frequent cleaning. This may be the only positive aspect of the relatively unsophisticated construction methods in the United States. Rietveld Architects is dedicated to remaining at the forefront of environmentally sustainable design. To this end, the firm is a member of the United States Green Building Council and frequently collaborates with European Building Physics consultants. This vital engineering service has proven integral to Rietveld Architect’s capacity to meaningfully integrate sustainable design practices into the firm’s design philosophy. Therefore, for the purposes of this book both LEED and building physics principles are combined to create technology icons. Highlighted icons on each featured project page designate green building practices relevant to the design. Rietveld Architects experience with environmentally sustainable design includes Wind Management, Roofs, Daylight and Views in addition to LEED concerns centered on Site Design, Transportation, Curtain Wall/Façade, Materials, and Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing technologies.

CENTRAL LIBRARY

The site is in Rijswijk, a small town outside of The Hague. The town features a public transportation hub that includes a train station, tram and bus stops, a taxi line, bicycle lanes and bicycle parking. Urban guidelines stipulated the creation of a new pedestrian square surrounded by offices, apartments, a leisure center and the central library to the south. A diagonal path through the square connects the train station and public transportation with existing offices to the south. The development of the square provided the opportunity to expand and modernize the central library of Rijswijk. The total library program provides for 3,400 square meters of space with the public functions all on one level. In our schematic designs we concluded that the library needed a public presence on the square and gave the building a front–of house and back-of house program division. This is strongly expressed in the front building crescent shape and double high open space. The library crescent is entered off of the main square. The entrance floor consists of a double high entrance hall and supports a center for art lending, a reading café, exhibit space, and a book and media circulation desk. The mezzanine level in the crescent building contains the second floor administrative offices. The heart of the library is in the rear building under the parking garage. It contains 2,100 square meters of book stacks, children’s library, study carrels and computer stations all in one open space.

The main space constitutes a compartment that exceeds the fire department maximum without a sprinkler. A sprinkler is of course not desirable in a library and we did not want to loose the open space quality of the design by dividing the space with fire rated walls and doors. Our solution involves the installation of an industrial fire curtain, 28 meters wide and 3 meters high. In the rolled up position it disappears in the ceiling and is designed to drop down to divide the space into two compartments in case of a fire. The exterior of the building is designed to express the library function within and to unite the library and garage functions. The blue-on-silver and silver-on-blue bookshelf pattern is an abstract representation of a bookcase, the main feature found in any library. The alternating open and closed panels unite the total volume by enclosing the perimeter of both the library and the garage. A variation of the exterior panels features a screen-printed pattern on clear glass to allow for daylight in the library along the crescent facing the square. The panels are also intermittently absent along the garage floor perimeter to admit natural ventilation to the parking garage. In keeping with the library function we wanted the predominantly closed facade to express the collection of information in a clear minimalist way. So in the tradition of “architecture parlant” we proposed to commission a British artist, Rachel Whiteread to create solid panels in negative relief of books on bookcases. Our initial idea involved one or two variations that we arranged in an alternate pattern. The inverted bookcase proposal foundered on the problem that the focus of a contemporary library has shifted away from books toward electronic information and digital media. In fact, the new name of the Rijswijk central library is the “Center for nformation and Culture”. text: Lucas Ligtenberg
