DISCOVER YOUR PURPOSE

Hayden Poorman has big plans for his future as an investment banker, perhaps on Wall Street, with his eyes on someday creating his own firm to handle wealth management and financial advising. But above all, he wants his career to be driven by Christian values. He has found at ACU the perfect place to achieve both. His studies have opened doors for him through Leadership Summit, which allows students to network with Christian CEOs from around the country, and through classes such as Social Enterprise Consulting, which traveled to Costa Rica during spring break to advise local entrepreneurs. Along the way, he’s discovered a passion for serving others that will follow wherever his dreams take him.

“If we treat each person like Christ calls us to, I think that’s the highest standard of business.” — HAYDEN POORMAN

Leadership Summit is a seven-day, three-credit course held in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado every January. The course blends academic rigor with an environment meant to promote your personal relationship with Christ, helping you connect faith to your future business career. Students receive mentorship from business leaders, CEOs and pastors who share their faith and leadership journeys within the workplace.

CALLED TO TEACHING AND RESEARCH Teaching is in Dr. Kyle Tippens’ blood. His great-grandfather, grandfather and father all taught students in secondary or higher education. “Initially, I had no plans to follow in their footsteps and instead pursued a career in business,” he says. “But over time my desire to do deeper research and to help students understand more about business, and finance in particular, led me to follow a call to a career in teaching and research.” Now he teaches business courses and heads ACU’s new Dukes School of Finance. “Working with students means that no two days are ever the same. I love to learn, and as any teacher knows, there is no better way to learn than to teach.”

“When students are open to it, I really appreciate the discussions and relationships that can form among us inside and outside of the classroom as we seek to learn and grow.” — DR. KYLE TIPPENS

LIVE OUT YOUR MISSION

When Asa Kusuma graduated from ACU with a degree in computer science, he had no idea that the international platform he used for his job search would become his future employer. Now as a software engineer at LinkedIn, he has seen his vocation intermingle with his faith and personal growth. LinkedIn strives to create economic opportunity for every member of the global workforce. “The desire to work, be productive, be creative and provide for your loved ones and yourself is a big part of being made in God’s image,” he says. “It’s been a blessing to be a very small part of a very big organization on a mission to empower everyone globally with the opportunity to satisfy that desire.” Our strong alumni connections play a vital role in fostering a sense of community, facilitating professional growth and contributing to the overall success and reputation of COBA at ACU.

“My time at ACU was formative because of the different perspectives impressed upon me by professors. I’m grateful for a community that invoked a broader purpose in life.” — ASA KUSAMA

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING Economies are powered by innovation. Much of that innovation derives from creative thinkers who possess the drive, vision and resources to turn an idea into reality. You can join nationally recognized student organizations and participate in campus competitions that promote entrepreneurial experiences, equipping you with the tools and resources to grow your business ventures under the guidance of our experienced staff. Entrepreneurship begins in every student’s freshman year with Venture Out, encouraging creativity and diligence within the context of an entrepreneurial pursuit. This experience includes students’ product development, pitch competitions and revenue goals, but extends farther than the classroom, into professional entrepreneuring opportunities.

Student Training and Research (STAR) Students gain first-hand experience by managing a multi-million-dollar investment fund belonging to the university’s endowment. STAR is an upper-level finance course that all business students have the opportunity to take. The course includes discussions about different sectors of the S&P 500, how current and historical events affect the market and, ultimately, how to buy and sell with the generous $2 million endowment fund entrusted to the students.

We see faith as a strength within industry. The vision of the Lytle Center is to transform the workplace by training up leaders of exemplary character. We do so by promoting conversation around the integration of faith and leadership. Past speakers include executives from Walmart, VMware, BNSF Railway and Kellogg’s U.S. Specialty Channel.
