FOR THE LOVE OF CLASSIC CARS

AT A YOUNG AGE TROY FULGHAM BECAME OBSESSED WITH CLASSIC CARS AND HE STILL FEELS THE SAME WAY TODAY

ABILENE, TX - In the heart of Abilene, Texas, there resides a man whose fondness for cars knows no bounds. Meet Troy Fulgham, an avid car enthusiast and proud owner of a remarkable classic car collection. His passion for automotive treasures runs deep, intertwined with his family’s shared adoration for these mechanical marvels.

With his wife, Traci Fulgham, Troy nurtures his car collection and owns and operates 5 Star Coatings, a full-service coating company. That also provides coating services to the automotive community in the Big Country. Now, let us delve into Troy Fulghum’s story, tracing his love affair with cars and the vehicles that have captured his heart.

10 ISSUE 8 | ABILENE MOTORS MAGAZINE

Troy’s affinity for cars blossomed during his teenage years. Starting as a young kid, he found himself drawn to the allure of automobiles, purchasing pickups, and other vehicles. As time passed, his passion intensified, and what began as a youthful fascination grew into a lifelong pursuit. “It’s like a disease,” Troy chuckles, “there’s no cure. I don’t know what else to do. I enjoy it. It keeps the sanity in a way.”

You never forget your first car, and Troy’s was a 1980 Chevy C30 Silverado, a cherished gift from his granddad when he was just 15 years old. This vintage beauty sparked a fl ame within Troy that still burns brightly today. Even as he grew older, Troy clung to the nostalgia of his first vehicle, eventually adding a 1979 Camaro to his collection. As the years went by, the collection expanded, snowballing into an impressive array of classic vehicles.

Troy’s car passion was not an isolated affair. It runs in the family’s veins. “My whole family is a bunch of car nuts,” Troy proudly shares. From his father to his uncle and cousin, the Fulgham’s share an automotive obsession. In town, Lance Fulgham, Troy’s cousin, even runs an automotive shop called Fulgham Automotive. The love for cars binds them, creating a strong sense of kinship and shared experiences. Troy’s father, Sam Fulgham, continues to share in his son’s passion, making memories and embarking on joyrides together.

Troy’s love for cars extends beyond mere ownership and admiration. As the owner of 5 Star Coatings, he and his wife, Traci, have seamlessly merged their business and personal interests. The company provides a wide range of coating services and some of the services extend to the automotive community in the Big Country, supporting their passion while helping enthusiasts protect and enhance their vehicles. Troy acknowledges his wife’s significant role in this endeavor, stating, “Without her, I don’t know what I’d do. I’d be lost.”

Amid Troy’s automotive journey, fate played its hand by bringing him and Traci together. Recalling their first date, Troy chuckles and shares, “She thought that was the only truck I had. She thought it was too loud and didn’t like to ride in it.” He vividly remembers the initial uncertainty that crossed Traci’s mind. Thankfully, their love story didn’t hinge on the success of that deal alone. Today, they continue to cherish their relationship and now, share a passion for cars.

With its rich history as a police officer and firefighter’s vehicle, as well as a testament to her grandfather’s military service, the restoration of this truck holds profound sentimental value. Traci oversees the meticulous process of restoring the truck to its former glory, including a captivating charcoal gray paint job, a nod to its storied past.

KEEPERS CAR CLUBS’ BOYD ZIMMERMAN BUILT A RAT ROD THAT DEFINITELY STANDS OUT FROM THE PACK

ABILENE, TX - In the realm of automotive enthusiasts, there exists a breed of individuals who dare to challenge convention and embrace the unconventional. They are the creators of uniquely designed hot rods that defy categorization and capture the spirit of individuality. Among these individuals in the Big Country is Boyd Zimmerman, a man whose love for cars has led him on an exciting journey, culminating in owning a truly one-of-a-kind vehicle – a 1951 Willys Sedan Delivery rat rod. As the Keepers Car Club’s President, Boyd has found a community that shares his passion and has also become a familiar face at car shows that he enjoys with fellow car enthusiasts in the Big Country.

As Boyd explained to us, rat rods are the embodiment of personal expression in the world of automobiles. No rules govern their construction or design, allowing owners to create their dream machines without limitations. For Boyd, the journey with his rat rod began when he stumbled upon the remains of a 1951 Willys Sedan Delivery in a wrecking yard. It was a mere shell of a vehicle, lacking an interior frame or any semblance of its former glory. Undeterred by its dilapidated state, Boyd embarked on a mission to bring this forgotten relic to life.

As Boyd explained to us, rat rods are the embodiment of personal expression in the world of automobiles. No rules govern their construction or design, allowing owners to create their dream machines without limitations.”

Starting with a Ford pickup frame, Boyd meticulously rebuilt and customized every aspect of the vehicle. A formidable 347 Stroker Ford motor is powering his rat rod, delivering exhilarating performance on the open road. A five-speed transmission ensures smooth gear shifts, while a Mustang rear end provides stability and traction. But it’s not just the mechanical prowess that sets Boyd’s rat rod apart; the thoughtful attention to detail and the infusion of reflective elements make it truly unique.

Boyd’s rat rod is a testament to his childhood dreams and the influences that shaped his automotive tastes. He incorporated various items that captivated his imagination as a young boy, from a clear distributor cap to finding aluminum valve covers and traction bars. Marble reflectors on the back add a touch of vintage charm, evoking memories of a bygone era. With each addition, Boyd has carefully crafted a vehicle that embodies his expression and showcases his automotive artistry.

20 ISSUE 8 | ABILENE MOTORS MAGAZINE

The journey from a neglected wreck to a stunning rat rod has not been without challenges. When Boyd first introduced his project at the car club, he was met with some skepticism. However, time has proven them wrong. Over 13 years, Boyd’s vision has materialized into a hot rod that commands attention and admiration. Those who witnessed the transformation from the vehicle’s humble beginnings to its current glory stand in awe of what has been accomplished.

Boyd’s dedication to the car community extends beyond his rat rod. As the President of the Keepers Car Club, he has fostered a tight-knit group of like-minded individuals who share a deep passion for automobiles. Founded in 2004 and bolstered by Boyd’s leadership since 2015, the club has become an integral part of the local car culture in the Big Country. Members support one another, helping and sharing their collective knowledge and expertise. Their camaraderie and love for cars create an environment where lifelong friendships are forged.

He incorporated various items that captivated his imagination as a young boy, from a clear distributor cap to finding aluminum valve covers and traction bars. Marble reflectors on the back add a touch of vintage charm, evoking memories of a bygone era.”

The pinnacle of the Keepers Car Club’s activities is its annual car show, held every October in Clyde City Park. This event serves as a platform for car enthusiasts to showcase their prized possessions and connect with fellow enthusiasts. Beyond the excitement and admiration, the car show also serves a noble purpose. The club raises funds to support the Pals backpack program, an initiative by Clyde High School to provide meals to children who are in need. By combining their shared passion for cars with a commitment to their community, the club demonstrates the true power of their collective passion.

Boyd’s love for cars traces back to his roots in Hawley, Texas, where mechanics surrounded him from an early age. Growing up with mechanic uncles and a father who

worked on cars, he developed a natural inclination and curiosity for all things automotive. At 15, he saved up the fruits of a summer of hard work hauling hay to purchase his first car—a ‘74 Torino. Despite its less-than-stellar condition, Boyd poured his heart into restoring and fixing it. This experience ignited his love for working on cars and set him on a path toward becoming an auto mechanic.

Before he took to the open road as a truck driver for BML, Boyd honed his mechanical skills by working in wrecking yards during his teenage years. There, he discovered the art of combining parts from different cars to create something truly extraordinary. Dismantling cars and piecing them together opened his eyes to the endless possibilities and sparked his creativity.

Amid his busy schedule, Boyd prioritizes his involvement with the Keepers Car Club. The monthly club meetings on the first Thursday of the month allows members to come together, share stories, exchange knowledge, and stay updated on the upcoming events. Whether it’s discussing the latest modifications, sharing restoration tips, or simply enjoying the company of fellow car enthusiasts, these gatherings foster a sense of community that transcends the love for cars.

We can’t help but be inspired by Boyd Zimmerman’s journey. From rescuing a forgotten relic to transforming it into a rat rod masterpiece, Boyd’s passion for cars has brought him joy, camaraderie, and the chance to make a difference in his community. Through the Keepers Car Club, he has found a supportive network of like-minded individuals.

He reminds us that cars are not merely machines but extensions of our dreams and expressions of our individuality. Boyd’s story is a testament to the vibrant car culture in the Big Country and the enduring spirit of those who dare to embrace the less traveled road.

As we look upon the image of Boyd Zimmerman and his meticulously crafted rat rod, we are reminded that the love for cars knows no bounds. It is a universal language spoken by enthusiasts worldwide. Boyd has firmly etched his name among those who understand and celebrate the artistry and freedom of owning a unique vehicle. With his 1951 Willys Sedan Delivery rat rod as the centerpiece, he embodies the spirit of individuality and the limitless possibilities of embracing one’s passion for cars.

ECAR COMMUNITY HONORS PROMISE TO STEPHEN COX

ABILENE, TX - In the vast realm of automotive artistry, there are individuals whose talent and skill transcend the boundaries of imagination. Stephen Richard Cox was one such extraordinary artist, whose awe-inspiring pinstripes and hand lettering on vehicles left a lasting impact on all who witnessed his creations.

Although no one on our team had the opportunity to meet him personally or interview him, the news of his passing reverberated through the car community in the Big Country. So much, it prompted us to learn more about him and the profound impact that Stephen Richard Cox made by pursuing his life passions.

26 ISSUE 8 | ABILENE MOTORS MAGAZINE

Renowned for his professional freehand line art, Stephen possessed an unparalleled ability to transform vehicles into stunning works of art. His pinstripes and hand lettering were executed with such precision and realism that many mistook them for expertly crafted decals. Stephen’s passion for his craft and his exceptional talent earned him recognition both locally and nationally, solidifying his place as a true master in the world of automotive pinstriping.

Stephen’s multifaceted career path took him from being a registered nurse to enlisting in the United States Army, where he served as a nurse and medic during the Vietnam War as a member of the 101st Airborne. His unwavering dedication to service led him to receive the prestigious Purple Heart, a testament to his bravery and sacrifice.

However, Stephen’s true calling awaited him in the realm of art. In the early 1980s, he founded his own business, Steve Cox Custom Design, marking the beginning of a new chapter in his life. It was through his art that Stephen achieved widespread recognition and touched the lives of countless individuals. His extraordinary talent even drew the attention of celebrities, who sought out his unrivaled craftsmanship.

Stephen’s artistry earned him invitations to prominent car shows and events across the nation, establishing his name as a household one among automotive enthusiasts.

The automotive community held Stephen in such high regard that, before his passing, he expressed a heartfelt wish for his funeral to be a tribute filled with hot rods and classic cars. True to his desire, members of the car community in the Big Country, including Steve Longmire, Bobby Green, Robert Fain, Cal Sumrall, Joe West, and many others, attended his funeral service at Trinity Baptist Church, and then traveled to the graveside service at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Abilene, Texas, to honor Stephen Cox and support his family during this difficult time.

Over the years, Stephen made many friends who shared the same passion for cars as he did. We had the privilege of interviewing a few people who had the pleasure of meeting him and they had nothing but good things to say about Stephen. One of them was Bobby Green, a member of the Last Chance Car Club in Abilene, Texas, and the proud owner of a 1968 Dodge Charger. Bobby, along with his wife Dianne Green, attended the service to pay their respects to a man whose artistry had left an indelible impression on them. Reflecting on Stephen Cox, Bobby shared, “I watched him for years. Anytime there was a car show he would be out there pinstriping.

The automotive community held Stephen in such high regard that, before his passing, he expressed a heartfelt wish for his funeral to be a tribute filled with hot rods and classic cars.

And here is a quick story. One time I bought a motorcycle and when we were unloading it off the trailer, the paint was scraped. So, I called Stephen and he told me to bring it to his house. There he fixed it in his garage and didn’t charge me a penny. He was a great guy and his work was amazing!” Bobby’s words echoed the sentiments of many who had admired Stephen’s work.

Another conversation he had was with Robert Fain, the former owner of Fain’s Automotive in Abilene, Texas. Having spent close to 50 years in the industry, Robert spoke fondly of Stephen Cox, emphasizing his exceptional talent and the impact he had on the automotive art scene. Robert remarked, “Steve Cox was unbelievably talented. Almost all of my cars have some of his graphics on it. He did about 8 or 10 cars for us. People would walk up to my car and think the pinstripes were decals, that’s how great his work was.”

We also had the pleasure of speaking with Steve Longmire, who met Stephen Cox in 1984 when he did some pinstriping on the first truck that he said could afford to get pinstriped. After meeting for the first time, they instantly became friends.

ABILENE MOTORS MAGAZINE | ISSUE 8 29

Steve admired Stephen’s dedication and skill. He expresses those feelings here, “ I always admired his outlook for color. One time I had a metallic brown pickup that I wanted pinstriped. And I said, “Stephen, I want brown and tan pinstripes on it.” He looked at me and said, “Well, I won’t do it, you’re paying me to do what I do, not what you do.” So he put teal and orange pinstripes on it and it turned out beautifully. Once it was done, everywhere I went, everybody said, all those colors are perfect. So he had such a good eye for color and he was just a wonderful person.”

His pinstriping artistry reached far beyond the local community. Stephen’s work garnered national recognition, showcased at major car shows and motorcycle events across the country. The demand for his talent extended even to notable figures outside the automotive realm, demonstrating the universal appeal and admiration for his art. His intricate designs and attention to detail captivated audiences and became an integral part of the automotive culture.

Stephen Cox and Steven Longmire’s friendship went far beyond cars. They would meet often, share laughs, memories and talk about anything under the sun.

One day when they were at Stephen Cox business’ Steve Cox Custom Design, he shared something with Steve Longmire that he would never forget. “He told me a long time ago when we were sitting around his shop over on Glenwood and we would go over and we would talk about life, we talk about Jesus, we talk about church, we talk about the walks to a mass, we talk about our families. He told me one time, he said, “I want you to preach at my funeral.” And I told him, “I said I’d gladly do it if it doesn’t come too soon.” So, getting to preach his funeral was one of the biggest honors of my life because I considered him to be a true friend. He was a great talent, so well known, He pinstriped all over the country, New York, he even pinstriped at the Sturgis Motorcycle rally in Sturgis, South Dakota. He was just a nationwide, known personality in the pinstriping community.”

Stephen’s multifaceted career path took him from being a registered nurse to enlisting in the United States Army, where he served as a nurse and medic during the Vietnam War as a member of the 101 st Airborne.”

Beyond his many talents, Stephen was also a great dad, a family man. He loved spending time with his children. In all, Stephen had 7 kids and 7 grandkids. He is survived by his wife, Voncille Hardy Cox, who he loved dearly.

He will truly be missed, but Stephen’s artistry and legacy will continue to inspire and influence those who appreciate the beauty of custom vehicles. His ability to transform vehicles into rolling works of art earned him respect and admiration both locally and nationally. The car community, driven by their shared passion, came together to honor him, showcasing their support and gratitude. Stephen’s journey from serving his country as a nurse and medic to becoming a celebrated pinstriper exemplifies the transformative power of pursuing one’s passion. His artistry will forever be remembered as a testament to the marriage of craftsmanship and creativity. Many car enthusiasts in the Big Country were fortunate to witness his remarkable talent, leaving an indelible mark on the automotive landscape. Stephen Richard Cox, a true artist, may have departed from this world, but his spirit lives on through the art he created on vehicles across the country and the hearts he touched.

OVER 50 YEARS AGO, MICKEY LAWRENCE FATHER WON A HOT ROD THAT HE NOW OWNS

ABILENE MOTORS MAGAZINE | ISSUE 8 35
TEXT BY ADAM MITCHELL | PHOTOS BY JOSHUA HAYNES

ABILENE, TX - There is a man that lives in the Big Country, that has a deep-rooted love for cars, a passion that had been ingrained in him since childhood. He grew up surrounded by hot rods and classic automobiles, and that man is Mickey Lawrence. And out of all the cars that he has had over the years, there is a special vehicle that holds an important place in his heart—the 1968 Firebird. This car’s remarkable history spans over 50 years, starting with Mickey’s father winning a brand new hot rod at a local gas station.

Mickey’s father, Holder Lawrence, won the ‘68 Firebird from Mobile Oil, a popular gas station in the 1960s. It was 1968 when Holder, then 46 years old, fueled up at the Mobile Oil station, participating in their scratch-off card promotion. The gas station attendants handed out these cards, offering customers a chance to win various prizes. Struck by a stroke of luck, Holder asked a young attendant for an extra card. He absentmindedly stashed the stack of cards in his shirt pocket, not realizing the life-changing event that was about to unfold.

While working at Locking Hooks Roofing Company during his lunch break, Holder sat down with his lunchbox and began scratching off the cards. As fate would have it, he uncovered the back half of a car, or perhaps it was the front half; Holder couldn’t quite recall. What mattered is that he had won a brand-new Firebird. Excitement surged through his veins as he scratched through both halves, confirming his prize.

The dealership, Manly Pontiac, presented Holder with the award, and Mobile Oil congratulated him on his win. However, the Firebird he won was a six-cylinder standard model, and neither Holder nor his wife were particularly fond of those specifications. But they were firm to make the most of this stroke of luck.

A discussion ensued, and Holder decided to visit the dealership, accompanied by young Mickey, to explore their options.

A vibrant yellow Firebird H.O. caught their attention as they entered the dealership. It stood there on the showroom fl oor, beckoning them with its allure—a 400 automatic engine, white top, fl at interior, and all the features that defined a true hot rod. Holder entertained the idea of trading in their 1965 Galaxie for this enticing machine. However, fate had various plans in store for them.

ABILENE MOTORS MAGAZINE | ISSUE 8 37

Holder’s attempt to convince his wife to trade their car for the yellow Firebird resulted in a heated argument. Mickey, then just 11 years old, vividly remembers the tension in the air. Ultimately, his mother stood firm, refusing to pay for another car. Disheartened but determined, Holder stormed out of the house, his anger apparent as he drove off, leaving a cloud of gravel dust in his wake.

After about an hour, Holder returned, his emotions more subdued. He announced that the car would be theirs in six to eight weeks. Still peering through the screen door, Mickey witnessed this unexpected turn of events. They ended up with the very one Holder had traded for a green Firebird with an automatic transmission, power steering, and a V8 engine. It perfectly suited the preferences of both his parents, with its emerald green exterior and Ivy gold top and interior.

As the years passed, the ‘68 Firebird became a significant part of Mickey’s life in the following years. While he and his brother didn’t get many opportunities to drive the car, they frequently rode alongside their mother, who considered it her taxi. Mickey reminisces about their countless family outings, road trips, and adventures in the Firebird. From weekend drives to nearby towns to summer vacations across the country, the car was always there, faithfully carrying them to their destinations. The Lawrence family created lifelong memories with the Firebird as their trusted companion.

As Mickey grew older, his love for cars deepened, and he began to appreciate the beauty and craftsmanship of the Firebird even more. He would spend hours polishing its sleek exterior, meticulously maintaining its engine, and ensuring every detail was pristine. The Firebird became a symbol of his passion for automobiles and a testament to the legacy passed down from his father.

Over the years, the Firebird aged gracefully, its emerald green paint acquiring a patina that told the story of countless journeys and unforgettable experiences.”

Mickey always thinks of memories made with his beloved Firebird. It remains a constant presence in his life, a reminder of his roots that started his love for cars. He often takes it out for drives on weekends, relishing the nostalgic feeling and the pure joy of being behind the wheel of such a timeless classic.

Over the years, the Firebird aged gracefully, its emerald green paint acquiring a patina that told the story of countless journeys and unforgettable experiences. People often stopped Mickey on the streets, marveling at the car’s beauty and asking about its history. He would proudly share the tale of his father’s win and how the Firebird became integral to their family’s story.

Today, Mickey Lawrence regularly participates in classic car shows and events as a proud member of the Last Chance Car Club, showcasing the Firebird’s immaculate condition and sharing its remarkable story with fellow car enthusiasts. The car symbolizes resilience, determination, and the enduring power of a lifelong passion.

Mickey’s journey with the Firebird exemplifies the profound impact that cars can have on our lives. Beyond being a means of transportation, they can become cherished companions, vessels of memories, and sources of inspiration. And for Mickey Lawrence, his beloved Firebird will always hold a remarkable place in his heart, reminding him of the love for cars passed down through generations and the extraordinary journey it has taken him on.

HOW I BOUGHT

MY IMPALA TWICE

BARTON BURGOON’S 1965 CHEVY IMPALA HAS A UNIQUE STORY

ABILENE, TX - Barton Burgoon is a familiar face amongst car enthusiasts in the Big Country. As far as he can remember, has always had a love for automobiles, particularly his cherished 1965 Impala. But there is more to Barton, than a man and his car. Behind the gleaming paint and roaring engine lies a hardworking man who loves his family, and has a lifelong passion for cars.

Born in Fort Smith, Arkansas, just before the outbreak of World War II, Barton’s early years were shaped by his father’s career as a refinery engineer. Although his father never served in the military, he performed a vital role in the war effort, working on critical civilian jobs. Eventually, the family settled in Abilene, Texas, where Barton’s father joined the Universal Motors Ford dealership.

44 ISSUE 8 | ABILENE MOTORS MAGAZINE

Growing up in Abilene, Barton’s love for cars started at a young age. Even as a child, he would sit in his father’s 1940 Ford sedan, pretending to drive. His enthusiasm only grew as he got older. At 14, Barton shared a car with his father, driving it to high school and fueling his automotive dreams.

In 1961, Barton purchased his first significant car, a 1958 Impala convertible, marking the beginning of his journey as a car enthusiast. Little did he know that his enthusiasm would extend to his family, especially his children.

In 1987, while searching for a car for his oldest son, Barton stumbled upon a remarkable find at a garage sale—a 1965 Chevrolet Impala. The box-top original car caught his eye, despite being in non-running condition. The elderly Hispanic lady selling the vehicle could barely communicate its history, but Barton knew he had stumbled upon something special. With a price agreed upon, he brought the car home with the help of a friend, a battery, and some fuel. But Barton would not have the car for long because his older son always wanted a classic coupe.

Growing up in Abilene, Barton’s love for cars started at a young age. Even as a child, he would sit in his father’s 1940 Ford sedan, pretending to drive.”

The Impala became his son’s prized possession for several years until an unfortunate incident involving a lit cigarette caused minor damage to the backseat. Eventually, the car was parked and fell into disrepair. Barton’s younger son then acquired the vehicle, intending to reconstruct it, but life got in the way.

In a twist of fate, Barton ended up trading his motor scooter for the beloved Impala, effectively buying back the car he had initially purchased for his son. From that point forward, Barton poured his heart and soul into restoring the vehicle to its former glory, which he achieved through upgrades and meticulous care.

Today, the ‘65 Impala boasts an impressive list of specifications. It is painted in a “willow green” factory color; the car has a 350-horsepower ZZ6 factory replacement engine, a 700R4 transmission with mild torque and burr, and Holley fuel injection. Barton also added disc brakes to the front and a 10-Bolt Posi-Traction rear with 3.73 gears. The car retains its original factory air conditioning, a testament to automotive history.

Barton’s passion for cars extends beyond his hot rod; he is an active member of the Keepers Car Club, a close-knit community of fellow car enthusiasts.

The repair shop’s reputation for providing excellent service can be attributed to John’s unwavering commitment and expertise. Although experiencing initial challenges, John’s passion for cars and desire to serve the community drove him to establish the business. Outlaw Automotive quickly gained recognition for its comprehensive services, including; engine repairs, transmission maintenance, brake services, suspension upgrades, and more. The company website, www.outlawautomotivetx.com, offers detailed information about its various services, ensuring that customers’ automotive needs are met with professionalism and quality workmanship.

John’s love for cars shines through in every aspect of Outlaw Automotive. He always enjoyed fixing things before he started working on cars. John says this passion started at a young age, “Honestly, I think it started with a lawnmower. It wasn’t working, and I was able to get a couple of parts, get it cleaned up and working again. I have always been pretty fascinated with that. Getting something that doesn’t run and making it run again.”

Soon, he would start working on his own car after he learned how to drive. One of the first cars he bought was an El Camino, which needed some work. It didn’t have an engine or transmission. He was able to fix it and drove it for a while. What’s most impressive about this is that he was only 15 years old, which is pretty awesome!

A few years later, John graduated high school and chose to attend college to pursue a non-automotive-related major. In his heart, he knew he wanted to be a mechanic and did not want a career in the field he chose in college. He explains here, “I got my first real mechanic job right when I got out of college. I did not want to really work in the field I graduated in. This is what I always loved to do. So, I have been working as a mechanic ever since I graduated from college.”

After college, John decided to pursue his dream job and become a mechanic. For years, he worked as a mechanic, but then something unexpected happened, and he was not able to work the way he was able to before. John explains here, “So, I was working full time as a mechanic, and I got hurt. I hurt my back and needed to move into an office position. I took a few jobs managing other people’s shops and really enjoyed it. That is when I decided I really wanted my own.”

Through this unfortunate injury, John found a new passion and he is able to continue doing what he loves. John still helps in the shop whenever he can. Still, he is primarily in the office overseeing the business, ensuring everything runs smoothly.

Since opening the repair shop, John says it has been great. It’s a lot of hours that he is used to working but overall he says it has been fantastic.

Outlaw Automotive, a family-owned business, has established itself as a reputable auto repair service provider in their community. What sets them apart is their commitment to excellence and the great bond between John with his staff and his son, Jaxon Lenamon.

Jaxon is a bright and intelligent kid that loves learning new things. He is now attending college to become a math teacher. Jaxon has a knack for technology and computers, which led his dad to hire him as the Office Assistant at Outlaw Automotive. Still a full-time student, Jaxon works whenever his college schedule allows.

As we all know, mechanics love cars, and John has a few toys of his own. He has a collection of 7 to 8 cars. But the one he loves the most and sits tall in front of the shop is his 2017 Ford Super Duty F-250 King Ranch Pickup. If I could give it a name, I would call it Beauty and the Beast, with its immaculate leather interior and a 6.7 Power Stroke V8 engine that would give any pickup a run for its money. John says he loves its power; unbelievably, this was not his first choice.

Here he explains, “The amount of torque it’s got. No matter what I strap behind it, I can haul it like it’s nothing. It just gets up and goes, and to be honest, I wasn’t looking for that nice of a truck. Just wanted a reliable truck with rubber floor mats. But when it was time to buy one, that was the only one they had. Which was a blessing in disguise; I love it!”

When he is not working on his own cars at home or spending time with family and friends. He is putting in hours at the shop. John Lenamon’s tireless work ethic is well-known in the community. When he was a full-time mechanic, John worked many hours, which did not stop when he opened the business. John dedicated himself to building Outlaw Automotive into what it is today. However, he realized that he needed to delegate responsibility and empower others for sustainable growth. By expanding its team, Outlaw Automotive thrives while providing employment opportunities in Abilene, Texas.

John says the business would not be where it is today without his hard working mechanics and office staff. Specifically; Johnny Flores, Jason Stevens, and Josh Lovins are the highly skilled mechanics at Outlaw Automotive. David Guerrero takes care of the office duties and customers that visit the shop. They all contribute significantly to the shop’s reputation for top-notch service. He says camaraderie among the team members created a great atmosphere where everyone is driven to deliver exceptional results and exceed customer expectations.

Furthermore, it is essential to mention John’s wife, LaDonna Lenamon, who provides unwavering support to him and the business. He says her belief and support in him have played an instrumental role in the business’s growth and success. Which he is ever so grateful for.
