John’s love for cars shines through in every aspect of Outlaw Automotive. He always enjoyed fixing things before he started working on cars. John says this passion started at a young age, “Honestly, I think it started with a lawnmower. It wasn’t working, and I was able to get a couple of parts, get it cleaned up and working again. I have always been pretty fascinated with that. Getting something that doesn’t run and making it run again.”

Soon, he would start working on his own car after he learned how to drive. One of the first cars he bought was an El Camino, which needed some work. It didn’t have an engine or transmission. He was able to fix it and drove it for a while. What’s most impressive about this is that he was only 15 years old, which is pretty awesome!

A few years later, John graduated high school and chose to attend college to pursue a non-automotive-related major. In his heart, he knew he wanted to be a mechanic and did not want a career in the field he chose in college. He explains here, “I got my first real mechanic job right when I got out of college. I did not want to really work in the field I graduated in. This is what I always loved to do. So, I have been working as a mechanic ever since I graduated from college.”

After college, John decided to pursue his dream job and become a mechanic. For years, he worked as a mechanic, but then something unexpected happened, and he was not able to work the way he was able to before. John explains here, “So, I was working full time as a mechanic, and I got hurt. I hurt my back and needed to move into an office position. I took a few jobs managing other people’s shops and really enjoyed it. That is when I decided I really wanted my own.”

Through this unfortunate injury, John found a new passion and he is able to continue doing what he loves. John still helps in the shop whenever he can. Still, he is primarily in the office overseeing the business, ensuring everything runs smoothly.

Since opening the repair shop, John says it has been great. It’s a lot of hours that he is used to working but overall he says it has been fantastic.

Jaxon is a bright and intelligent kid that loves learning new things. He is now attending college to become a math teacher. Jaxon has a knack for technology and computers, which led his dad to hire him as the Office Assistant at Outlaw Automotive. Still a full-time student, Jaxon works whenever his college schedule allows.

As we all know, mechanics love cars, and John has a few toys of his own. He has a collection of 7 to 8 cars. But the one he loves the most and sits tall in front of the shop is his 2017 Ford Super Duty F-250 King Ranch Pickup. If I could give it a name, I would call it Beauty and the Beast, with its immaculate leather interior and a 6.7 Power Stroke V8 engine that would give any pickup a run for its money. John says he loves its power; unbelievably, this was not his first choice.

Here he explains, “The amount of torque it’s got. No matter what I strap behind it, I can haul it like it’s nothing. It just gets up and goes, and to be honest, I wasn’t looking for that nice of a truck. Just wanted a reliable truck with rubber floor mats. But when it was time to buy one, that was the only one they had. Which was a blessing in disguise; I love it!”

When he is not working on his own cars at home or spending time with family and friends. He is putting in hours at the shop. John Lenamon’s tireless work ethic is well-known in the community. When he was a full-time mechanic, John worked many hours, which did not stop when he opened the business. John dedicated himself to building Outlaw Automotive into what it is today. However, he realized that he needed to delegate responsibility and empower others for sustainable growth. By expanding its team, Outlaw Automotive thrives while providing employment opportunities in Abilene, Texas.

John says the business would not be where it is today without his hard working mechanics and office staff. Specifically; Johnny Flores, Jason Stevens, and Josh Lovins are the highly skilled mechanics at Outlaw Automotive. David Guerrero takes care of the office duties and customers that visit the shop. They all contribute significantly to the shop’s reputation for top-notch service.
