A survey released by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) revealed that gardening makes people happy. This shows that the U.K. is a nation of gardeners, with 77% saying that they do gardening and 82% admitting that the activity helps improve their mood. As such, it is no wonder many households are hiring landscape artists to build their own gardens in either their front or backyard. 

Making People Happy No Matter the Season RHS Chief Advisor Guy Barter says that January is the most depressing month because job hunting is at its highest. Many have quit their jobs as a bank manager, finance worker, chef and many more to start a horticultural career. Surprisingly, they are enjoying the career shift. The RHS survey noted that gardening could help beat the January blues, as well. From its 2,000 participants, about 80% said that they love gardening because it gives them a reason to go outside and be active. Around 72% confessed that they love the feeling of being able to grow something.

Helping People Keep Signs of Depression Away A survey conducted by Gardeners’ World magazine even had higher results with 90% of people saying that gardening makes them happy and satisfied with their lives. They are less likely to show signs of depression, as well. Next to computing and gaming (52%), gardening, walking and hiking (43%) came second in the most popular hobbies in the U.K. Lucy Hall, the editor of Gardeners’ World, said that they have long suspected the benefits of gardening, but now that they have solid evidence, it makes more sense to build a landscape that households can maintain. Whether it is a small backyard vegetable garden or a large flowerbed, gardening can go a long way for people in the U.K.

Gardening may simply be a hobby, but it helps improve the mood. The next time U.K. households feel blue, a little work in the garden could be an effective solution.
