Amy Beth Kirsten
strange pilgrims for Chorus and Chamber Orchestra (Score)
strange pilgrims began as a meditation on creativity and its relationship to the spirit. For me personally, composing is a deeply spiritual practice that essentially feels like rooting around inside my self to find what sounds like the ring of truth. As such, there are a lot of beginnings, a lot of discarded attempts, many ideas that don’t make it. The musical material for this piece is made up of several of these “attempts” adjacent to material that returns over and over again. In the end, I realized that the theme of the poem is more universal; it isn’t just artists who are listening for the truth of life—in some way we all are. That we keep listening is the most beautiful thing to me. This is my second collaboration with Mark DeChiazza and my first with Mark Andrew. One of our aims was to allow a harmonious conversation to unfold—a conversation between text, music, and image—so that all the elements (film and music, music and text, chorus and orchestra) would be inextricably linked to each other. We started with this poem I wrote, began to exchange ideas, those ideas became ninety seconds of music, which inspired photographic images, which inspired a musical and visual concept and structure. I dedicate this piece to a like-minded pilgrim, Christopher Theofanidis, whose love is like wings to me. —AMY BETH KIRSTEN October 2013 strange pilgrims as I write You hold my conscience carefully and I look as I fail (with all my heart) and fail and fail I look with only my self at stake I step each rock a vision now petrified—now stone now beautiful for what it could have been as I pray I hold You in my conscience carefully and listen (for my voice): failing that (look up) failing that (look left) failing that (look right) failing that (look)… look. (as I fail) with all my heart (and fail and fail and fail) I (step and) listen (for my voice)
Commissioned by the American Composers Orchestra with support from New Music America
INSTRUMENTATION Piccolo Alto Flute in G 2 Clarinets in Bb Chorus (SATB) Strings Video duration: ca. 10 minutes
PERFORMANCE NOTES The music for strange pilgrims is made up of two disparate vocal styles interacting and eventually merging: 1) an early music/new music style with little or no vibrato and 2) a style that alludes to music of an oral tradition: it bends into and out of pitches, is rather laid back rhythmically, and makes use of loosely articulated syllables. The role of the orchestra is to mimic these vocal styles as closely as possible, therefore I have asked for senza vibrato throughout. Additionally, please play the full duration of eighth notes and sixteenth notes (unless marked staccato). I’ve included some sound clips as a reference for passages where traditional Western notation is insufficient. Please listen to the clips to hear how to play these figures. They are posted online at www.amybethkirsten.com/aco There is a required video component to the work. 1. 2. 3. 4.
5. 6. 7.
GENERAL VOICE NOTES Consonants in parentheses are not pronounced. Vowels in brackets are pronounced—brackets are used when a vowel stands alone. x note-heads are whispered [x] = exhale, full duration ^ = u in “run” e = e in “bet” a = a in “father” o = o in “whole” ɪ = i in “did” eɪ = a in “bay” aʊ = ow in “now” SPECIFIC VOICE NOTES m. 4 – basses, listen to sound clip (spM4)—you’ll notice that the given IPA is only an approximation of the intended pronunciation. m. 8 – tenors, same as above m. 23 – basses and clarinets listen to sound clip (spM23)—the notation is an approximation Rehearsal letter I (and all “ecstatic spinning sections”)— this note applies to all voices and instruments playing the quarter-note-triplet figures. The notation is an approximation. Please listen to the short sound files to hear an example of how these figures should be played. The most important elements are: a. Accents – exaggerate them (unaccented pitches are extremely de-emphasized) b. Pitches – they sound like “blue” notes. The sonic goal with each of these “ecstatic spinning” sections is to create an un-blended sound, as possible Rehearsal Letter L – altos – same as above m. 118 tenors and basses – listen to the Composer Sketch at around 3:50 m. 202 - sopranos – see note #4 above
SPECIFIC INSTRUMENT NOTES 1. clarinets m. 23 – see sound clip spM23 2. clarinets, basses, cellos m. 56 – see sound clip spM56 3. violins m. 182 – see sound slip spM56 The following sound clips are provided for reference 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
spM4 (strange pilgrims measure 4) spM8 spM23 spM56_bass and low strings spM56 tenor (also clarinets and violins would benefit from hearing this as they play parts of this figure throughout) 6. spM81 tenors altos 7. Composer Sketch of whole piece—not entirely accurate, but will give a sense of what I’m going for
