JOテグ PORTUGAL RAMOS VINHOS | ESTREMOZ

Alentejo, Wines and Olive Oils| Day 1

JOテグ PORTUGAL RAMOS VINHOS In the very heart of the Alto Alentejo, the soil that originated from schist and limestone clay as well as the climate with its continental influence, make for unusually consistent quality, and ideal conditions for exceptional wine growing. This was the location chosen by Joテ」o Portugal Ramos to make his own wines, after a long career as consultant oenologist in wine creation in the main wine-growing regions of Portugal. Joテ」o Portugal Ramos began planting his own vineyards around Monte da Caldeira in 1990, choosing the double cordon for vine spacing. Since then the area covered by vineyards has increased, with the prime objective of obtaining from each vintage a selection of grapes capable of producing exceptional wines. In average, vineyards are planted since 1997.

ADEGA DA CARTUXA

Two kilometers from World Heritage denominated city of Evora, and 200 meters from the Cartuxa Monastery from which it takes its name, the Cartuxa Wine Tourism Centre is located at Quinta de Valbom, the former refectory of the retreat for the Jesuits who taught at the University of Evora in the 16th and 17th centuries. When the Jesuits were expelled in 1759 by the then Prime Minister, Marquês de Pombal, the property was taken over by the state. In 1776 it took on a new function as a significant wine cellar producing wines from the region’s grapes. Acquired in the 19th century by the family of Eugénio de Almeida, the Adega Cartuxa (Cartuxa Winery) has undergone various renovations and extensions over the years, but never at the cost of its rich history and architecture. Adega Cartuxa – Quinta de Valbom is now the cellar for aging wines produced by the Eugénio de Almeida Foundation. The success of this winegrowing venture generates the necessary funds to allow the Foundation to fulfill its mission of social, cultural and educational development in the region.

The grapes are processed at the famous Cartuxa Winery, a former Jesuit house that was designated a national treasure in 1755. A wine press was already there in operation in 1776. In this historic setting the EugĂŠnio de Almeida Foudation has invested in quality as well preserving its heritage and the house boasts a sizeable modern winery. Continuous research and development devoted to acquiring knowledge of the vines, the grape varieties and wine making techniques have resulted in wines with character and a distinctive style.

HERDADE DO MARMELO Ferreira do Alentejo has ten thousand of olive groves, one for each portuguese, and the biggest Oil Mill of the country. The objectives of this project, which go far beyond Ferreira do Alentejo, is to plant much more hectares of olive groves, both nationally and in other countries where the conditions for such are good. Herdade do Marmelo can be called as the starting point, because that is where lies the extraction unit.

HERDADE DO ESPORÃO | REGUENGOS

DE MONSARAZ

HERDADE DO ESPORÃO Situated in Reguengos de Monsaraz, Herdade do Esporão is a place that exudes history. Its roots date back to the prehistoric times of megalithic cultures and the Bronze Age. However, even during the Roman occupation, the wines of the Esporão settlement were exported throughout the Empire. At the heart of this estate, and in the scorching Alentejo heat, we find the Esporão Fortified Enclosure, which includes the Nossa Senhora dos Remédios Chapel and a curious fortified gate, with a winding staircase that leads up to the ramparts.
