Travelling in Iberian Lands | Day 2 PARC GUELL Parc Guell is one of the world's most intriguing parks. The park's colorful main staircase and the fanciful pavilions that were designed by Antoni GaudĂ look like they belong in some fairy tale. This popular park started out as a development project. Eusebi GĂźell, a well known Catalan industrialist, acquired a 17 hectare (42 acres) large hilly plot in the GrĂ cia district, north of Barcelona. He wanted to turn the area into a residential garden village based on English models. 60 Housing units as well as several public buildings were planned.

MONTJUIC
Montjuïc is a hill located near the center of Barcelona. It features a large number of attractions including the Spanish Village, the Magic Fountain and MNAC, one of the city's most important museums. Several thousand years ago, Iberic Celts settled on the Montjuïc, a 213 meter high hill southeast of Barcelona's current city center. The hill was later used by the Romans as a ceremonial place. Today the Montjuïc is a mostly recreational area with a large number of sights and attractions, most of them originating from two major events that took place here: the 1929 International Exhibition and the 1992 Olympics. Travelling in Iberian Lands | Day 4
Madrid is the capital of Spain and its largest city, located on the Manzanares River. As the capital city of Spain, seat of government, and residence of the Spanish monarch, Madrid is also the political, economic and cultural centre of the country. Due to its high quality of life, Madrid is considered one of the best cities in the world to live. And while it holds modern infrastructure at all levels, the city was able to preserve not only the appearance but also the joyful life and the "movida" to many of its historic neighborhoods and streets.
The Palacio Real - Royal Palace, also referred to as the Palacio de Oriente is the lavish site of royal events, but is not home to the royal family (they have lived in the smaller Palacio de la Zarzuela for some time). The Palacio Real is still a fascinating place to walk through though, with its maze of 50 themed rooms decorated in the finest metals and richest fabrics - though this is only a small sampling of the total 2,800 rooms of the palace. On the guided tour, you will also learn much about the interesting history behind the Bourbon dynasty, during whose reign the palace was most in use.

PLAZA MAYOR Plaza Mayor ("Main Square") is located in the center of Madrid just a few meters from Puerta del Sol and Plaza de la Villa. It is a rectangular square, surrounded on all sides for three floors of buildings. It has 129 meters long and 94 wide. There are altogether 237 balconies over the entire square. The best known is the “Arco de Cuchilleros”, at the southwest corner of the square. In the center, on the north side, stands the “Casa de la Panaderia” and on the south side, the 'Casa de la Carnicería”. Under the porticoes, in its arcades, traditional stores are established, constituting one of the more prominent sights in the city.
The Plaza de Cibeles (Cibeles Square) is one of the most symbolic places of the capital. In the center of the square is located the famous Cibeles Fountain, carved in the year 1782, from a design of Ventura Rodríguez. In each of the four corners are emblematic buildings, built between the late eighteenth century and early twentieth century. Toledo
Successively a Roman municipium, the capital of the Visigothic Kingdom, a fortress of the Emirate of Cordoba, an outpost of the Christian kingdoms fighting the Moors and, in the 16th century, the temporary seat of supreme power under Charles V, Toledo is the repository of more than 2,000 years of history. Its masterpieces are the product of heterogeneous civilizations in an environment where the existence of three major religions – Judaism, Christianity and Islam – was a major factor. SALAMANCA The city is large enough (180.000 inhabitants) to be able to offer the advantages of a real city, but at the same time it keeps the intimacy of a village. In Salamanca, the inhabitants speak the "purest" Spanish in Spain Castilian. For this reason Salamanca is enormously popular with people all over the world who want to learn Spanish. Contacts are made easily. You don't have to make rendezvous as you are bound to see everyone in the Plaza Mayor, one of the finest squares in Spain and known as the living room of the Salamantinos. As there is such a varied range of nationalities, it is tempting to keep to fellow don Quijote students. Salamanca is however, a real university city, Spanish students are everywhere and you can go practically everywhere on foot.

Monsaraz is a tiny fairytale walled village that maintains a delightful medieval atmosphere. It was originally fortified by the Knights Templar, and today its 150 or so permanent residents live in ancient white houses with outdoor staircases and wrought-iron balconie. Évora is the capital of Alentejo Province and one of the tourist attractions of the south. In spite of sharp population growth which has led to the construction of new quarters to the west, south and east, this museum city has retained all of its traditional charm inside the Vaubanstyle wall built in the 17th century according to the plans of Nicolas de Langres, a French engineer. The rural landscape to the north has remained virtually unchanged.Évora has been shaped by some 20 centuries of history, going as far back as Celtic times. It fell under Roman domination, when it was called Liberalitas Julia and, among other ruins, still retains those of the Temple of Diana. .
