Welcome to the January/February issue of About Stillorgan Hello and welcome to our first edition of About Stillorgan for 2011. This month we highlight the current plight of a local charity still trying to raise much needed funds, I wrote about their plight very briefly in the last edition and I have been made aware of how desperate they are to keep their essential project going. As we all find things a little tighter in the pocket, worthwhile local projects like this tend to lose out to much larger scale global fundraising. If like Saplings School you are involved in a local charity or community group we would love to hear from you to highlight your program. If like me you overdid the picking at the Turkey and stuffing this Christmas or just need to lose a few pounds we have some excellent advice and solutions from renowned South Dublin Nutritionist Anne Owens. The Mill Theatre’s new full program of great nights out at the theatre for January and February and we also highlight one of their popular Drama groups, the award winning Balally Players. If you are looking to open up your own set of lung’s and set the music free, CORus are looking for budding singers all over South Dublin to join in their new no audition choirs, so look for them. As always there is plenty for everyone Events, News, Advice and Competitions, if you have any interest in writing a piece on your local area, event or something that you think our readers might be interested in then please contact us we would be happy to discuss developing it. Happy New Year to you all and here’s hoping for a great 2011.

ABOUT RECIPE
Lemon Chicken with a Cashew Crunch With Christmas gone and the new year started with healthy intentions, we didn’t think it fair to tempt hungry readers with something cream-filled or chocolate-dipped. But healthy doesn’t have to mean boring, so here’s a little something for those cold January nights that’s packed with colourful vegetables and full of flavour. Ingredients: 1 tablespoon of olive oil 2 chicken breasts, sliced 1 clove of garlic, peeled and diced 1 onion, sliced 150g broccoli 1 large carrot, cut into sticks 1 red or yellow pepper, cut into strips 200ml chicken stock 1 tbsp cornflour 2 tbsp honey 1 lemon, grated rind and juice 75g cashew nuts A handful of beansprouts or white cabbage Chilli flakes (for an optional kick!) Brown rice or noodles to serve. Serves: 2 Method: 1. Heat the oil in a large pan or wok and add the chicken. Stir fry for a few minutes until the chicken begins to turn gold, then set aside. 2. In the same pan, cook the onion and garlic until they begin to brown, then add the broccoli and carrot and cook for about a minute. 3. In a jug mix the stock, honey and cornflour together and pour into the pan. Return the chicken to the heat and stir until the sauce has thickened and the chicken is cooked through. 4. Tip in the lemon rind, juice, cashews and a sprinkle of chilli flakes if desired and serve with brown rice or noodles - and a healthy conscience. 10 | ABOUT STILLORGAN

ABOUT COMPUTERS
Cyberbullying and your teen by Paula Flanagan
I have spoken to a lot of parents of teens lately who are worried about cyberbullying, or bullying using technology. Who is doing it? It’s important to recognise that very often the cyber bully will be quite different to the traditional schoolyard bully. The cyber bully can sometimes be the schoolyard victim, looking to use their intellect or technological knowledge to get revenge. Sometimes it’s the small group of “Mean Girls” who get together to embarrass or intimidate for fun. What do they do? Victims of cyberbullying can have their personal information put up on chatrooms or websites by the bully in a bid to draw unwanted attention to them. They can have their accounts hacked and passwords stolen, so the bully can go online masquerading as the victim in order to say mean things about their friends to alienate them. These are just some of the ways the victim can be bullied. So what can we as parents and educators do to prevent it and to deal with it when it happens? First of all we need to be aware of the danger signs. Is your child spending considerably more or considerably less time on their computer than they used to? Has their behaviour changed? Has their mobile phone bill suddenly gone up? Remember that your child could be the bully just as easily as the victim. What can we do if we discover our child is a victim of 12 | ABOUT STILLORGAN
cyberbullying? A survey was done in the States recently which showed that less than 5% of teens would tell their parents if they were being bullied online. When asked why not, they said that they were afraid their parents would either overreact or under react, and not take it seriously. Engage with the child and educate yourself. I’ve often heard children say “I can do whatever I like on Facebook, my parents don’t even know what it is”. How about sitting down with the child and asking them to help you set up a Facebook page so you can keep in touch with old friends. That way you’ll learn how it works. Educate the child as well. Common sense would say you shouldn’t put personal information online, so learn about privacy settings, and teach your child to set everything to private, visible by invitation only. Many people think this is the default, but it isn’t. Teach them not to enter competitions online or to register for sites unless they check with you first. Keep the computer in a public space where you can look in on them regularly, and limit their time online. Work with the school, they may spot something you don’t. Teach them that everyone online is a stranger. That 12 year old girl online might be a 45 year old man. Lastly, don’t do it alone, talk to someone who can help. If you are worried about how to make your online experience more secure there are professionals that we have used and we are sure that if you ask for advice they will give as much information as possible.

Bytes & Pieces Dealing with SPAM It’s almost impossible to avoid getting spam into your email account. However a bit of prevention and dealing with it when it arrives will minimise the quantity. Some spammers use software to randomly generate email addresses for popular email providers e.g. hotmail.com. Commonly called dictionary attacks, the software will guess the first part of an email address – for example HYPERLINK "mailto:johnsmith@hotmail.com" johnsmith@hotmail.com. So when creating your email address ensure you use special characters such as underscores or numbers. Some spammers use special software called email harvesters which scan webpages for email addresses. Common targets are message boards and social networking websites. So when including your email address on a webpage (for example when you use a message board) try to obscure it. For example, use john AT yourprovider.com instead of using the @ symbol. SPAM emails will almost always invite you to unsubscribe from their mailing list. This is a way for them to confirm your email address is real. It will offer a link, or it will say something like 'Reply to this email with UNSUBSCRIBE in the subject'. Only unsubscribe from mails you are certain you originally subscribed to.

Applisonix Hair Removal Unwanted hair is something that affects all of us. For over 20 years scientists have been trying to come up with a solution to remove blonde, grey, red and dark hair. Recent advances in technology mean it’s no longer a problem. Applisonix Ultrasound Hair Removal is the next generation of long term hair removal devices. It is suitable for all hair colours and skin tones. The technology is so accurate that the surrounding skin is not affected so enables precise eyebrow contouring and pain free treatment of sensitive areas like the upper lip, chin, underarms and bikini line. Treatments are safe and free of side effects. The procedure is straight forward and involves Ultrasound waves being focused directly down each hair shaft where they are converted into thermal energy which damages hair re-growth. Semone’s Mobile Beauty is the first in Dublin to offer this Ultrasound Hair Removal treatment in the comfort of your own home anywhere in Dublin. Semone’s Mobile Beauty offers a single 20 minute treatment for €55, a double 40 minute treatment for €100 saving €10 and a package of 6 treatments for €275 saving €55. ABOUT WEDDINGS
Choosing the Perfect Dress Planning your wedding, and especially choosing your wedding dress is a very special time. Before you visit any bridal shops it’s a good idea to hit the net and do some research on-line. Keep a scrapbook full of your favourite looks and designers and bring this with you when you start to shop. Try on different styles to see which ones suit you best. Generally its advisable to start looking for your dress about 6 months before your wedding. When you have chosen your dress it will be ordered in your size. However, you may have to think about having it altered to fit you perfectly. Subtle changes to a garment can make all the difference to how it looks and feels. Remember that even the most beautiful dress wont look the pert if it doesn’t fit you perfectly. It’s a good idea to plan your fittings so that a lot of the work is done well ahead of time. Choosing the right underwear is imperative. Not only will it affect your overall look but can make all the difference to your comfort. You may decide to combine design features from a number of dresses to create your own bespoke wedding dress. In that case give Denise a call and she will ensure that this is a happy experience from start to finish. Her dresses are renowned for their individuality and quality. Denise also caters for mother of the bride and mother of the groom.

ABOUT NUTRITION
Lose Weight and Feel Great Have you been gaining weight over the last few years? Do you find it increasingly difficult to lose weight? Do you crave particular foods? Do you feel tired all the time? Have you been yo-yo dieting? If the answer to any of above is yes then your blood sugar is probably out of balance. Keeping your blood sugar stable is the secret to losing weight. You may be familiar with the Glycemic Index (GI) of foods, however the Glycemic Load (GL) is a better way of gauging the effect of foods on your blood sugar levels, and thus your energy, wellbeing and weight. GL is a measure of the quantity and quality of carbohydrate in any given food. It shows us the effect each type of food has on our blood sugar. Foods with a high GL rating encourage the body to "store" fat. Foods with a low GL rating enourage the body to "burn" fat.
A quarter of all people, and nine out of ten people with weight problems have difficulty keeping their blood sugar balanced. The result is exhaustion and weight gain. Obese people are 77 times more at risk of developing diabetes than non-obese people - a statistic that alone tells you how strongly linked weight gain is to blood sugar control. So, the best way to lose weight is to regain blood sugar control which heralds the return of your body's ability to burn fat. How to balance your blood sugar Avoid sugar and stimulants (coffee, tea, alcohol, caffeine, cigarettes ) Eat a low Glycemic Load diet. Eat protein with carbohydrates Drink plenty of water Exercise every day.
You might be amazed by some of the foods that have a high GL rating. Cornflakes have a very high GL whilst ice cream and peanuts do not! Your body is designed to burn glucose for energy. Carbhydrates such as grains ( bread, pasta, rice ) and fruits are broken down into glucose in the body. But in today’s typical western diet, the wrong types of carbohydrates are consumed excessively resulting in too much blood glucose. The excess is stored as fat leaving the body craving even more food to meet its energy requirements. When this happens the body has lost blood sugar control and weight gain becomes inevitable. If your blood glucose levels are even, you'll have a steady supply of energy and a healthy but balanced appetite. But, if your blood sugar levels are too high, you'll lay down fat and if they are too low, you'll feel tired and lethargic. Balance is key.

ABOUT GARDENING
Round the Garden in January by Tom Percy There are two seasonal diversions that can ease the bite of any winter. One is the January thaw, the other is the seed catalogues. Hal Borland. What can be more relaxing than using this quiet, dark and cold time of year as an opportunity to look through pages of the seed and shrub catalogues? You can spend plenty of time browsing pages of perfect flowers and shrubs, planning where they will fit into your garden.
Plug-plants are a great way of buying a considerable number of plants, usually annuals, to create large swathes of colour later in the year. However remember they are tiny seedlings that need to be grown on in a greenhouse before planting out. If you don’t have a greenhouse then pay a little more and buy plants that are larger.
The more planning you can do, the more likely your garden and choice of new plants will be a success. Research the plants that catch your eye and make sure they will grow on your soil and fit your garden once fully grown. Look back at the past garden year; what thrived and survived and what failed or outgrew its home? If you have never ordered from catalogues before or haven’t received any through the post, you can usually find adverts in newspapers and magazines. It’s worth ordering a few to gain some background information on a range of plants and also to see the countless new varieties that will have been recently released. Often the catalogues carry varieties not found in the garden centres.

ABOUT DATING
Dine to Meet We make the reservation, the restaurant serves the food . . . .the rest is up to you! The New Year is a great time to make promises to extend your social network etc. but how is the best wa to do this?? We all know somebody who has tried different ways to meet new people whether it is speed dating, blind dates, online dating etc. with mixed results. At Dine to Meet, we have a great insight into what can work for one person may not work for another - the saying that ‘one size fits all’ is not true!
the meeting takes place. We make the restaurant reservation & arrange one small table (and by small we mean 6 or 8 people in total) with same number of men & women. A generalisation is that men tend to be hesitant to try new options and we want to change this and encourage more males as members! - so if you are a man or know any men over 30 who might be interested – check out or encourage them to check out our website www.dinetomeet.ie or call 087 7640 385
From a marketing point of view, we are always reminded to focus on similarities of different services in existence – however in our case we took the feedback of why people were disenchanted with the above services and produced a totally different option! Dinner dates in a small group. www.
One of the major concerns about meeting new people is the safe environment & atmosphere of how and where
.ie
Dine to Meet make meeting new people a far more palatable experience. We arrange for groups of like minded individuals to go out and enjoy each others company in some of the city’s finest restaurants. So, whether you’re looking for love or would love to just widen your social circle, it’s all served up at www.dinetomeet.ie
Well, let us make you a reservation.

ABOUT CHARITY
Saplings School - For Children with Autism by Stuart Ferguson Until relatively recently, Autism was considered a devastating diagnosis with grim prospects for the sufferer and their family. Now we know that people with autism can in fact be helped enormously towards independence, if they receive Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA) intervention in their early childhoods. Through one-to-one education and therapy, students at Saplings learn how to learn. This is something that children with autism are unable to do to a greater or lesser degree in the natural environment. If children with autism are not taught the fundamental step of how to learn, many of them don’t learn – hence the potentially devastating nature of autism. ‘Learning’ at Saplings incorporates everything from eating, dressing and going to the toilet independently, to forming social relationships and making friends; from regulating one’s emotional responses and anxiety as a result of heightened senses, to academic subjects such as reading, writing and maths. Communication skills – using speech, sign language or pictures – is one of the most important subjects taught at Saplings. Much of the extremely challenging behaviour traditionally associated with autism – including tantrums, aggression, injury to self and others – is a result of the autistic person’s frustration and isolation. Saplings take these vulnerable children, who are at risk of social exclusion and institutionalisation, it gives them the chance to unlock and achieve their full potential. People with autism are fascinating and unusual. Their heightened sensitivity often provides them with exceptional gifts, high levels of creativity and artistry and a unique perspective on life, as well as many challenges that the ‘neurotypical’ population never face.
Rowena with Louise Lynam of EBS Rathfarnham
The State currently provides our children with basic requirements. These are minimum service levels that provide basic care, but do not allow for higher level needs of these children to be satisfied. The parents of Saplings are constantly seeking to secure the funding for crucial projects. Every month they struggle to raise the €14,000 needed in which to teach their children daily living skills, engage in family life and educate themselves in the many extra skills that they need as parents of Autists. With the economic situation as it is, local groups such as Saplings are struggling even more to raise their much needed funds and are now running at a deficit which has led to them having to reduce the teaching staff, meaning that new children admitted to the school could be missing out on crucial progress in a child’s development. One local business has helped last December, EBS Rathfarnham donated €500 through the EBS Community fund which provides support to projects that benefit local communities around Ireland, with the intention that the money helps people to continue the great work that they do. To date over a quarter of a million euro has been donated under the EBS Community Fund and in the last round of the fund 21 South Dublin causes received funding from a special 75th Birthday round. If you wish to know more about Saplings School or how to help with their much needed fund raising you can contact Rowena Maiden on 087 6822363 or rowenamaiden@gmail.com If you know of a charity or local group in South Dublin that would like to have their story told please contact us.

ABOUT HIGHLIGHTING
Balally Players Theatre Company Founded in 1982, Balally Players has welcomed everyone interested in sharing and enjoying theatre from within the local community and farther afield. The company has been successful in building up a faithful group of committed and dedicated members over the succeeding years and is now one of the success stories of the drama movement in this south city suburb of our capital city. Competing in the All Ireland One-Act Finals from the mid nineties, Balally reached the Finals in 1997 with five wins and Vinegar Tom –no luck then - and has had to be content with second place for Aristophanes’ Women in the Assembly in 1999 and a 3rd place for The Hunger March and Under The Stars until in 2006, our first win came with Melody by Deirdre Kinahan and a second consecutive win with Riders to the Sea the following year, 2007. Balally likes to travel and has represented Ireland at the Bi Centennial of the French Revolution in Paris in 1989, at the Mondial du Theatre - the Amateur World Conference in Monaco in 2009 and at various festivals in the US, Britain, Denmark and France. Highlight of this decade must be appearing on the stage of the National Theatre during the centenary celebration in 2004 with the WB Yeats On Baile’s Strand a once in a lifetime achievement – or perhaps it is the opening of our own Mill Theatre in 2006, donated to five local drama groups by developer Joe Reilly. The company has built a solid programme of events and now produce several full length productions annually for performance here in the Mill Theatre and on the full

length festival circuit as well as one act plays, workshops covering all aspects of theatre and the very successful open air Shakespeare productions in Airfield and the Christmas show at the same venue. The variety offered to members ensures that all needs are catered for both on and off stage. Our upcoming production in The Mill Theatre Dundrum is Arthur Miller’s ‘All My Sons’ it’s the story of war profiteering and its tragic consequences on family life. Set in a small town in America, this is a story of moral obligation and …retribution. Although written over 60 years ago, its theme is particularly relevant today in light of the financial scandals both home and abroad. ABOUT TALENT
Churchtown School Of Music Hits The Airwaves Martina is a seasoned performer at this stage having played solo flute at The School of Music’s End of Year Recitals in Marlay House in May, The Dundrum Festival in June and The Bank of Ireland, Dundrum in November.
Churchtown School of Music was recently given the thumbs up when Martina O’Connell was chosen to perform in The Late Late Toy show in November. Martina was one of only a few instrumentalists who were chosen from thousands of hopefuls who had sent in an application to perform. She successfully came through a rigorous audition process in RTE playing solo flute and was finally chosen as one of the performers in the dramatic Willy Wonka- style opening for the show.
Mini Music, the popular mother and toddler music curriculum, was recently featured on RTE Junior TV when Rebecca Maybin of Mini Music was invited on to the childrens’ programme Hubble where she demonstrated how to make simple musical instruments from everyday objects and was interviewed by a puppet from Cork!! Rebecca was also filmed teaching a Mini Music class in The National Concert Hall by TV3 for their Ireland AM show earlier in the year. This was aired as part of their Parenting slot and was given the seal of approval by their resident child pyschologist as an excellent way of improving your child’s development. Both the School of Music and Mini Music resume after the Christmas break on Monday 10th Jan. Mini Music can now be booked online at www.churchtownschoolofmusic.com and instrumental classes at the school can be booked by calling Ann on 087 2471208 or email info@churchtownschoolofmusic.com

Stillorgan Diary with THE MILL GALLERY Tel: 296 9340 Paintings by ANDREW CARROLL 8th January – 4th February 2011 The theatre of the Space Race – the proscenium of the television-set through which was viewed those worldaltering moments; that drama was used to win the hearts and minds of the viewers, to created investment in the hero-characters who represented an ideal, and ultimately the triumph of an ideology. Was this a type of mythic space that was perceived, a poetic and idealised space, as in the theatre - or has it become so over time, as we view it from the hindsight that might question man’s ability or need to explore the cosmos beyond a certain point?

Use the phone in your camera if necessary. 7. Do not admit liability or state who was right or wrong. 8. Get witness details, addresses and phone numbers. 9. Ring 999 for the local Garda Station. Take note of Garda on duty to whom the report is made. 10. Notify your insurance company as soon as possible.
What if I do not know the identity of the other driver? Sometimes it is impossible to obtain the details of the other driver at the scene of an accident. However, you can still pursue a claim even if you do not know the identity of the party at fault. If the Gardai have attended the accident scene your Solicitor can and pay a small fee for the details of the other driver and request the relevant Gardai report. If one has been the victim of what is known as a ‘hit and run’ incident or have later discovered that the driver of the other vehicle was uninsured a legal remedy is still available. In such circumstances your Solicitor can refer the matter to the Motor Insurers Bureau of Ireland which exists to protect the victims of car accidents when the party at fault is unidentified or uninsured. The MIBI effectively acts as the ‘insurer’ of the unknown or untraced driver . Talk to us today if you have had an accident and you wish to discuss a possible claim or to obtain a copy of our accident assist brochure that comes with a free insurance disk holder.
If you have a motor accident the law says you must stop. If you drive away, you could be charged with hit and run even if the accident was not your fault. You should give reasonable assistance to anyone who is injured. For example, you may need to call an ambulance, take the injured person to a doctor or hospital, or give first aid— only if you know how.
COMPETITION - Win a €15.00 Marlay Wine Shop voucher sponsored by Dillon Solicitors. FILL IN THE MISSING WORD “When involved in an accident it is important to notify your ___________ company as soon as possible.” Text your Answer, Name & Address to 086 264 8280. Good luck!

ABOUT TAROTSCOPES
Tarotscopes by Mags ARIES You welcome in the new year with an air of caution, Aries. Truly, the best way to come to terms with the future is to face the problems head on. A time of thought, reflection and holding back on wasteful spending. You are at last willing to accept that you have a choice of which role you play in the formation of your own happiness. TAURUS Your patience is about to pay dividends. You are an avid believer in karma, thus you tend to send out a more positive universal vibe, which in turn comes back to you in a positive way. Yes! You are so much loved, although this may not always be evident. You are determined this year to reach a new spiritual high and truly tune in harmoniously with the power of the heavens. GEMINI You want improvement so much. All you seek is on the way and the wheel of fortune spins out of control in your favour. In love, the cards are stacked in your favour, although you cannot see that now. Your friend, who has cried a lot in the recent past, is on the mend. He/she respectively will settle down to a wonderful, contented and harmonious life. CANCER The loneliness of the past make you appreciate the present. A word of caution; do not display possessiveness towards a loved one, you have no need. You are very much loved; just be yourself. Unattached? A past love wishes to re-enter your life. There is no winner or loser in this, only a pure and forgiving love. LEO Leo’s lot may not be as happy and harmonious as you would like. The next few weeks sees the love life in turmoil. This is probably caused by you over-reacting to what others see as normal. However, opening the doors of communication allows reconciliation. A re-birth of relationship is on the cards. VIRGO If you are not in a relationship, you will be agreeable and say yes to a romance that can only blossom as time goes on. You have choices, but you are quite content to muddle through for the time being. You seem to take sustenance from your religious beliefs and are much calmer as a result. A job offer from across the water is a decision only you can make.
LIBRA A “D” name can offer you so much support in all aspects of your life. If this is a romantic liaison, you are truly blessed. This may be the perfect time Libra, to take a long look at the past and begin forgiving all those who upset the balance in your life. Your friend announces her engagement and you are over the moon for her. SCORPIO Miracles do happen and you have no problem asking for and expecting to receive such. Your life and business may be put relatively on hold for a while. Being realistic is the key to success. A chain of events set in motion kick start a spate of travel that, over the next year will yield fruit. Cards advise that you look deeper into your own actions. SAGITTARIUS Right now, an authority figure is throwing his weight around you must override this in your brain. The overall picture is more important. A false power is worthless, but you are headed towards the real deal. You have known unhappiness in the past, but the contentment you desire is for the future; the past was just to get you ready for the due rewards. AQUARIUS A “W” name is a sure winner for you at this wondrous time. Your link with luck is snow, a gift and a key. You may have been in a crowd, but you can be a lonelier soul than most. Love from the distant past re-enters the scene at the same time you are ready to try the new courtier wishing to play a major role in your life.
CAPRICORN You begin to question the motives of even your closest fellows. You are very wise to be cautious, but not paranoid. Nobody can fire any ammunition at you only the information you, yourself give out. You have so much to celebrate this year your mind is boggled. Wheel of fortune brings cash luck to you and yours.
PISCES A couple of trips away to the country to meet up with pals is on the immediate agenda. This is so good for the unattached as the universe is setting up the chain of events that ultimately lead you to your destiny. You are very fussy when it comes to choosing a partner, but this is how you are and changing would mean you not being true to yourself.
