NIMBLE, FLEXIBLE, AND LEAN How our local business community has managed in the wake of COVID-19 PHOTOS BY NOUSHIN NOURIZADEH

Fabio Speziali at Pomodoro 18

ABOUTTOWNMAGAZINES.COM

We have all been affected by the coronavirus in some way, and we’re certainly not out of the woods yet. But recently, when we reached out to more than a dozen of our loyal advertisers to see how they were doing, we were deeply touched by what they had to say. They told tales of uncertainty, redirection, optimism, and hope. We’re honored to share their stories with you. FABIO SPEZIALI Owner, Osteria Romantica, Pomodoro, and Pummaro

Linda Jalving at Jewels by he Sea

“We bought the building that houses one of my restaurants, Pomodoro, a year ago. I was planning to eventually make the patio area look more attractive, but when the pandemic hit, it became a priority. We expanded the space, which allows us to have more customers. We offer food to go, but I like to see a lot of people here enjoying the food and having a good time. In La Jolla, they closed the street, so Osteria Romantica has a lot of extra tables outside and business is good. For me, it has been important to count on myself and just a few people to run the business and make it tight. We’re going to get through this, you know.”

LINDA JALVING Owner, Jewels By the Sea “What I truly enjoy about my business is the person-to-person interaction. I am not particularly computer literate, so all the well-meaning suggestions of moving my business online just put me farther into a funk. My biggest challenges have been to maintain an attitude of hopefulness through month-after-month of continued business shutdowns and the realization that being able to be open does not necessarily mean ‘back in business.’ I have learned not to take my business for granted, and I’ve made a conscious decision to do my absolute best to stay open. My friends and clients have been a godsend. Their continued encouragement and support mean the world to me!”

CODY AND KENSEY DECKER Owners, Decker’s Dog + Cat “We opened our doors in June 2019 and were able to gain a little bit of traction, but when the pandemic hit, our business basically changed in the course of one month. As an essential business because we provide food for pets, we were allowed to stay open, but our dog day care business suddenly dropped. We decided to convert our day care space to retail and expand our offerings, as well as provide curbside pick up and home delivery,

Randy Gruber at Elixir

which has helped us out a lot. Our customers have been so loyal and encouraging. We’ll never be able to thank them enough. It’s important to remain optimistic and positive because, as retailers, we’re a source of energy in this town.”

RANDY GRUBER Owner, Americana Restaurant and Elixir “Our greatest obstacle has been our capacity seating, and it’s all outdoors. We’re lucky to have seating outside, and we’re approved for an awning so we can heat our expanded outdoor space on colder days. We keep tables six feet apart and practice all the proper protocols to keep our staff and clientele safe. I’ve had to be very lean with my expenses. As a business, you’ve got to be able to pivot quickly because the regulations can change so fast. It’s important to be positive. We’ve made it this far, so let’s keep going. If we can just get through this, I think Del Mar is going to explode with great new businesses and things to do.”

PAT STRAUBE Owner, Orchard Hill Country Inn “As soon as we closed, I began to think about reopening. I knew we’d be able to provide our guests with fresh air and solitude, but they would also want to be able to shop and dine in town. So, I stayed in close contact with the Julian Chamber of Commerce to keep track of the other local businesses, because we could not reopen without them. The San Diego County Health Department encouraged us to reopen as early as possible because people confined to their homes in San Diego had a yearning to get out into nature. Now that we’re open, we’re very busy but cautious. We are all definitely in this together.”

DAVID DUMANGAS-KLEHR Owner, Be Seen Optics “Even when we were closed, I was at Be Seen Optics every day, answering phone calls and emails. We were pretty busy. We got a lot of calls from panicked customers whose optical shop had shut down and they had broken their frame or had run out of contact lenses. Our biggest challenge remains making sure that all the frames that have been tried on have been completely sterilized. We bought a machine that does all the work for us. Plus, we use a liquid cleaner to clean all the surfaces between guests. Customer service has always been our top priority, and it’s even more so now.”

Molly Rossettie at Hi Sweetheart

DR. SARAH WINTER Owner, Sarah Winter Dental

MOLLY ROSSETTIE Owner, Hi Sweetheart

“One of the things that appealed to me about entering the field of dentistry was, it’s stable. Well, that changed this year. It really took our footing away to have the business shut down and stay closed for 10 weeks, as I know it did for many. I spent that time researching COVID-19 and trying to figure out what I was going to do to help my staff and patients feel safe. To make everything as sterile as possible, I invested in a lot of equipment and created a stringent set of safety protocols. We opened slowly, holding safety paramount. Since then, feedback from my staff and patients has been very positive. COVID-19 has changed the way we do a lot of things, and I think that’s ok.”

“I’ve been in business for seven years, and I have a wonderfully loyal clientele. In March, when I chose to temporarily close the shop before the mandate, I was relieved knowing my website was up and ready. I was able to redirect my customers there and started doing home deliveries, which kept me busy and was a lot of fun. I feel very grateful to my customers for their loyalty through these tough times. If I could give fellow business owners advice, I would say refocus on the elements that don’t cost money. Refresh the business Instagram. Post some fun and uplifting content, engage with new followers, update your eBlast list, and reach out to the people you know. Remind them you’re there and happy to help.”

Carol Temple at Solana Beach Art & Frame

CAROL TEMPLE Owner, Solana Beach Art & Frame “Shortly after the close order, customers started pulling up in front of the gallery with framed artwork to upgrade. Since they were spending much more time at home, the reflective glass on their artwork started to bother them. We use a premium non-reflective museum glass that provides 99 percent UV protection and a clear view of the art from any angle, so we replaced their glass. Then we started refurbishing mats and adding beautiful new frames as needed. I feel fortunate that the business was able to adapt to our customers’ needs at this unprecedented time and actually provide a service to those sheltering at home.”

PHYLLIS LANPHIER Owner, Sigi’s Boutique “When I realized early on that the shutdown of my business wasn’t going to be short term, I took the opportunity to

22 ABOUTTOWNMAGAZINES.COM

reimagine the business going forward. I knew that thing I wanted to do was to start a shopping website. I also realized that this was a time of change for consumers, and I quickly changed my merchandising to reflect that. I’m looking at buying things that will make customers feel good, comfortable, and happy. People want to be loyal to the stores they love, and I’m happy to say that our efforts seem to be paying off.”

TERRY UNDERWOOD Owner, Grande Colonial Hotel and NINE-TEN Restaurant “When the crisis first began, our heads were spinning. New regulations quickly changed into other new regulations, many of which contradicted the guidance received days earlier. Initially, we were closed by state mandate for nearly three months. Survival during this very dynamic crisis has been highly dependent on our ability to quickly adapt and pivot. It is never pleasant to look at the glass half empty, but if you can anticipate what that might look like, you are able to plan for

how to overcome it. The critical thing to be focused on today is maintaining your relationship with your customers and with the amazing employees who helped build your success prior to this crisis.”

TRACY SHEFFER Owner, Pedego Electric Bikes La Jolla “I’ve learned that in the most disconcerting and insecure times in life, people rise to the challenge. As a business owner, the amount of support and respect we’ve experienced has been beyond anything I had ever witnessed and experienced in my lifetime. We, in turn, have reciprocated by working literally aroundthe-clock to meet the requests of the community to provide healthy, positive solutions to families suffering the mental and physical ill-effects of the mandated stay-at-home orders. We are all working in-community to support one another on every level and make the best of one of the most difficult times in our history. In this regard, COVID-19 has had unprecedented, positive effects that appear to be ongoing, with a stronger sense of community abounding throughout the world.”

PAM SCHWARTZ General Manager, Ranch 45 “My biggest challenge has been dealing with my staff and customers through the fear of the unknown. A lot of positive has come out of this, too. Previously, we weren’t able to be open for dinner, so we were closed before many residents of our neighborhood got home from work. When the pandemic hit and non-essential workers were told to stay home, we put ‘we have groceries’ on our chalkboard out front and staff members stood on the sidewalk with a ‘we’re open’ sign. I posted on our website that we were still open for take-out, and people found us. This crisis has reminded me that being there for the community is important, and every penny counts.”

MAREYIA SISBARRO Chef, Brockton Villa “As a restaurant, our biggest challenge has been seating, given current restrictions. We’ve been able to add a side yard deck that seats up to 18 guests, as well as several tables out in front on a temporary deck. Our food suppliers work hard to get us what we need, and our owners, Megan and David Heine, are constantly thinking outside the box. We’ve reinvented our menu and now include some incredible to-go items like a giant charcuterie board for four to eight people with a variety of cheeses, sausages, and other items. It’s really popular. We even offer to-go drinks. It’s important to use your imagination.” ✲

ABOUTTOWNMAGAZINES.COM

What do we love about ordering from a restaurant’s menu of daily specials? Whether the dish was inspired by a fresh, seasonal ingredient or simply the chef’s latest creative whim, it’s bound to be delicious! Just look at the sumptuous Specials of the Day we discovered on our most recent culinary tour about town.

Ranch 45 SOPE

This tasty dish premiered as a daily special and was received so well, it has earned a spot on the regular dinner menu. It may appear dainty, but it’s a powerful medley of Brandt Beef ribeye cap, fresh avocado purée, Mexican pinto beans, and Mexican crema, all tucked into a robust house-made masa tarte. Perfect as an appetizer or alongside the soup of the day.

NINE-TEN Restaurant & Bar SCOTTISH SALMON

Inspired by the French dish, artichokes barigoule, Chef Jason Knibb braises tender young artichoke hearts in white wine and butter, adding Thumbelina carrots, spring onions, garlic, and other aromatics. He removes the artichokes and other vegetables to maintain texture and returns them to the liquid when it is reduced. Chanterelle mushrooms are added for depth. The tender salmon with its crispy skin absorbs these flavors beautifully.

Pomodoro

FETTUCINE VERDE The langoustino has always been held in high esteem in Italian cuisine. With a sweet taste similar to lobster, three wild Argentina langoustinos make the ultimate crown for this delicious pasta special. A succulent combination of capers, olives, cherry tomatoes, and white wine sauce is tossed into the pasta to deepen the texture and enhance the flavor. When paired with a light red wine, it’s perfetto!

ABOUTTOWNMAGAZINES.COM

Pummaro

BUTTERNUT SQUASH PIZZA Pummaro’s pizza chef likes to feature the ingredients of the season on his daily Specials menu. “As soon as the squash is fully ripe and ready, it becomes a featured topping,” he says. This delightful version includes a house-made sausage that’s not too heavily spiced, adding another dimension without overpowering the flavor of the squash.

Bella Vista Social Club & Caffé's Coconut Ceviche

Elixir

BUDDHA BOWL This healthy dish has a secret ingredient that makes it even better: The sweet potatoes are cooked in Kangen water, a powerful anti-inflammatory high in antioxidants. Order this heavenly mixture of roasted and grilled veggies, chicken, pepitas, feta cheese, and lemon garlic dressing with a bottle of Kangen water prepared right on the premises and read about its health benefits between each scrumptious bite.

Americana Restaurant

THE CLASSIC COBB This iconic salad, first served at Hollywood’s Brown Derby Restaurant in the late 1930s, is a feast for the eyes. Pick up your fork and you won’t be disappointed! It is the perfect blend of house-roasted turkey, smokey bacon, perfectly ripe avocado, crumbled gorgonzola, chopped tomatoes, and sliced hard boiled eggs—all lightly tossed in red wine vinaigrette. A generous slice of Tuscan bread serves as an ideal accompaniment.

Osteria Romantica

PORK SHANK OSSO BUCO It warms us to the tips of our toes when we see this hearty dish listed on Osteria Romantica’s Specials menu. The pork shanks, braised in a succulent mixture of tomatoes and wine, simmer in a complex sauce until the meat practically slips off the bone. It’s served on a bed of pasta to soak up all the robust flavor.

I write this as I greet the morning on the last day of my first visit, softly rocking in a dew-soaked hammock to the tune of a neighboring rooster’s throaty call. I strongly recommend adding a few days in Fredericksburg the next time you head to Dallas, San Antonio, or Austin. Or heck. You could just come to Fredericksburg and make a week of it. It’s really that good.

GERMAN HERITAGE The first thing to appreciate about Fredericksburg is its roots. It is an American Dream town, born in a time when life was rough in Germany and people were willing to sever ties with family and a way of life to “go for it” in the Texan wilderness. Today, Fredericksburg continues to honor its unique heritage in many ways, including numerous restaurants serving German cuisine in the downtown Fredericksburg National Historic District. This is the center of town, highlighted by an expansive Marktplatz, featuring the newly renovated Vereins Kirche, the site of many popular festivals all year long. Each Christmas, this pretty block is bedecked with a stunning 26-foot-tall Christmas Pyramid, imported piece by piece from Germany. Plan to grab a pastry at a German bakery and dine on Jagerschnitzel on Main Street at some point during your stay. You’ll also want to dedicate at least an hour to the Pioneer Museum Complex, a collection of authentic structures preserved from the early 1900s. Designed so you can direct your own tour with the help of a map and brief audio presentations at each stop, the Pioneer Museum does a great job of bringing those early days to life. One of the unique buildings is an authentic Sunday House, used by early settlers on weekends when they came to town to conduct business and attend church. A typical Sunday House had only one downstairs room with a lean-to kitchen and sleeping quarters that were only reachable by an outdoor stairway or ladder.

Fredericksburg is also home to the six-acre National Museum of the Pacific War, a 55,000–square-foot exhibit space featuring three galleries. As the only museum in the continental United States solely dedicated to telling the story of World War II in the Pacific, it does a thorough job with interactive displays, short films, personal artifacts, and more. Take a guided tour and expect to be overwhelmed at times. There is so much information here that two-day passes are an often-purchased option. In my personal experience, I was exhausted after my two-and-a-half-hour visit, but I can’t wait to get back for more. “Hold your horses,” you might ask. “How did a Smithsonian-level museum come to be in Fredericksburg, Texas?” Well, Fredericksburg just happens to be the hometown of

SHOPPING LOCAL Long loved by Texans for its oodles of unique shops, Fredericksburg has more boutiques than you might imagine. They're all independently owned because they’re located in a National Historic District, and franchises and chain stores are not allowed. Consequently, you’re guaranteed an incomparable shopping experience. Here, the focus is on clothing, jewelry, home décor, gourmet foods, and pieces of art. If you want to step off the main drag and mingle with local residents, there’s the Warehouse District, just south of Main Street along Lincoln Street as well as Llano and Washington Streets. You’ll find trendy, industrial chic shops offering an array of items. Browse Black Chalk Home + Laundry and stop at Woerner Warehouse for breakfast. August E’s is one of the best spots in town for a gourmet dinner, with sushi, akaushi steak, and themed menus such as Thai Tuesdays—a local favorite.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURE Geologically speaking, the Fredericksburg area holds many wonders, including Enchanted Rock, a sheer giant granite dome, which is

just part of a 20- by 12-mile-long batholith situated about 18 miles out of town. It opened as a state natural area in 1978 and serves as a mecca for archeologists, rock climbers, hikers, and picnickers. On a clear day, you can climb the short-but-steep Summit Trail to admire 360-degree views of the peaks and valleys of Texas Hill Country. At night, the pitch-black sky makes it one of the best public places for stargazing in Central Texas. Cycling is also popular here, where the county’s rolling, lightly traveled backroads beckon. You can rent a bike or sign up for a guided cycling tour at Hill Country Bicycle. Owned by Lisa and Adam Salladin, who know the local roads like the backs of their hands, the shop provides everything you could possibly need, including electric bikes. Ask them to take you to Luckenbach so you can see the bar made famous by a classic country hit by Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson.

Plan Your Trip WHEN TO GO

Pretty much anytime is good, but each spring, the hillsides surrounding Fredericksburg alight with bluebonnets, Indian Paintbrush, Mexican Hat. Late summer marks peach season, and autumn is time for Oktoberfest! As Christmas approaches, there are festive ways to celebrate all over town.

WINE COUNTRY This undulating terrain is also home to an established wine country producing world-class wines. In my three-day visit, I was able to stop at several wineries offering a compelling assortment of varietals and blends. You can work a winery or two into your itinerary each day. Stop into a tasting room between shops on Main Street. Make lunch reservations at a vineyard as you return from a hike and try local wines in the restaurants and wine bars. They can ship wine to California, so order a case of your favorites, or join a wine club. Each time you receive a wine shipment you’ll be reminded of the wonderful time you spent in Fredericksburg, the town with a Texas heart and a German soul.

6 WAYS TO MANAGE DAILY STRESS AND ANXIETY WWW.SHUTTERSTOCK.COM

BY STAN POPOVICH

Talk about a stressful year! Beyond regular things that trigger stress and anxiety, we have been faced with a bundle of new fears and uncertainties. Although most of us are finding ways to cope, it is not easy to keep our feelings from getting the best of us. Here are six tips to help manage daily stresses and anxieties before they get out of control. 1. TAKE A BREAK

Take a short music break.

44

ABOUTTOWNMAGAZINES.COM

Sometimes, we get stressed out when everything hits all at once. When this happens, take a deep breath and find something to do for a few minutes to get your mind off of the problem. Take a walk, listen to music, read the newspaper, or do an activity that will give you a fresh perspective. This short break should help you get your bearings so you can think more clearly and feel more in control of the situation.

Write down affirmations that touch you in a journal.

2. POCKET SOME POSITIVE STATEMENTS Grab a small, pocket-sized journal and keep it within reach. When you come across an affirmation that touches you, make a note of it. Next time you feel anxious, reach for your journal, and read the inspirational writings. The positive and uplifting messages will help soothe your negative thoughts and reduce your anxiety.

3. LIGHTEN YOUR GRIP ON THE WORLD You can’t predict the future, and everything is not up to you. While the consequences of a particular situation may seem real, there are usually other factors that you can’t foresee that also affect it. So when you start to worry about what’s coming next, take a few deep breaths and relax any physical tension you may be feeling.

4. CHALLENGE NEGATIVE THINKING When you have a thought that makes you fearful or depressed, nip it in the bud. Calmly stop and ask yourself questions that will help you focus on the reality of the situation and not your thoughts. This way, you’ll be able to maintain objectivity and common sense and feel less stressed.

5. TAKE BABY STEPS When facing a current or upcoming task that overwhelms you with anxiety, divide the task into a series of smaller steps and then complete each of the smaller tasks one step at a time. Completing these smaller activities will make the stress more manageable and increase your chance of success.

6. TALK TO A PROFESSIONAL There are many individuals who have been expertly trained in the field of psychology to help us find ways to manage fear and anxiety. Seek out someone whom you trust to provide sound advice and guidance. This same professional can also help you create an action plan for dealing with fears and anxieties in the future. Managing your stress and anxiety takes practice. The more you practice, the better you will feel and the more you’ll get out of life. ✲

EVERY MAP TELLS A STORY

MANDY SCHAFFER

Each morning when Gallery Director Alex Clausen heads to work at Barry Lawrence Ruderman Antique Maps on La Jolla Boulevard, he has absolutely no idea what the day holds for him. “Each package that’s delivered is another discovery,” he says. “And, lately, we’ve been getting some items that I never thought I’d see.” 52

ABOUTTOWNMAGAZINES.COM

Founded as a website in 1996 by Barry Ruderman, Barry Lawrence Ruderman Antique Maps is now the world’s largest and most diverse online inventory of antique maps. The company’s 3,000-square-foot space houses its impressive inventory and provides a workspace for Alex, Barry, and a tight team of staff members. “Maps provide a wealth of information about history, art, politics, culture, social values, and so much more,” Alex says. “We’re always discovering something new.” When asked for an example, Alex pointed to the past week. First, they received a collection of compelling lithographs of the night sky by Frenchborn Etienne Leopold Trouvelot (1827–1895). Trouvelot worked as an artist and nature illustrator until he became interested in astronomy, which led him around the world to produce astronomical illustrations of superb quality. During the course of his life he produced about 7,000 quality astronomical illustrations. He was particularly interested in the sun and is credited with discovering the sun’s “veiled spots” in 1875. The following day, a California Automobile Road Atlas from 1909 arrived at the gallery. “The exciting thing about this book is it is one of the earliest, if not the earliest, atlases of California intended for car owners,” Alex says. “It

provides us with a distinct picture of life in this region in the early twentieth century, before the interstate highway networks, when the transportation network that was so integral to the development of the state was just being born.” Before the week was out, an 1887 map of Coronado, extremely rare on the market, arrived at the gallery. Produced by the Coronado Beach Company, it is a promotional map for The Hotel Del Coronado, designed prior to the start of hotel construction. On one side, a full broadsheet map of Coronado is shown. On the reverse, there is a regional map of Southern California, centered on Coronado Beach, surrounded by promotional information. The map shows many details, including the proposed site of the hotel, streets, parks, streetcar lines, bridges, wharfs, and a floating bath house. Virtually all the streets from the original plan were built almost exactly as shown and most of the street names remain unchanged to this day.

“Ironically, it’s easy to get lost in this work,” Alex smiles. “Most every item in our inventory has a fascinating story behind it, and doing the necessary research is an adventure in itself.”

TOP LEFT: Two drawings from The Great Nebula of Orion by Etienne Leopold Trouvelot TOP RIGHT: A rare Revolutionary War battle plan of New York City ABOVE: An 1887 Map of Coronado with the original blue paper wrapper BELOW: The entrance view at Barry Lawrence Ruderman Antique Maps MANDY SCHAFFER

Arguably the week’s most intriguing arrival was the plan for one of the most important early battles of the American Revolutionary War waged in New York City. Published soon after the battle, the plan documents the British landing and the Battle of Long Island up to and including the American retreat to Brooklyn. The map extends from Courtland on the Hudson in the north, to Sandy Hook and Middletown, New Jersey, in the south, depicting towns and settlements, major topographical features, roads, and residences. Major military positions and events of the battle are shown, including the assembled British fleet and the Americans entrenched on Long Island and Manhattan, the initial British landing, and the diversionary thrusts and flanking maneuvers that routed the Continental Army.

It’s easy, even for the novice, to get lost on RareMaps.com. Through its ever-expanding inventory of thousands of maps and rare books, we discover countless ways to stimulate our intellectual curiosity and appreciate the artistry and intelligence of those who preceded us. Alex, Barry, and the entire team invite us all to visit their website, browse, and call or email with any questions or interest. Your Very Own

FOUNDERS’ DAY Spend a fun, history-packed day without leaving San Diego’s city limits PHOTOS COURTESY OF SANDIEGO.ORG

EVER WISH YOU COULD TRAVEL BACK IN TIME to see San Diego when Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo first set foot on land in 1542? Or would you like to wind back even farther—more than 12,000 years—to the days when the Kumeyaay people inhabited the region? Well, you can, because this town’s fascinating history is folded into our landscape and waiting to be discovered every day of the year. Start your day admiring stunning vistas of sea and wind down as you take in the sunset perched on an ancient hill. And it’s so easy! To follow this five-stop itinerary, just carve out a day, put on a comfortable pair of walking shoes, and hop in the car. 1. CABRILLO NATIONAL MONUMENT (60–90 MINUTES) Start your day at the southern tip of Point Loma, where Cabrillo’s 1542 European expedition touched shore, marking the first time Europeans set foot on the West Coast of North America. Wander along a portion of the Bayside Trail and be sure to take the steep (but short) path leading to the old lighthouse, built in 1855. The Visitor Center houses a military history exhibit explaining the role Point Loma played in both world wars. On a clear day in winter and early spring, the Whale Watch Overlook is a fantastic place to observe gray whales. 2. OLD TOWN SAN DIEGO STATE HISTORIC PARK (60–90 MINUTES) Known as the historic heart of the city, Old Town is where California’s first mission and fort were built. There are many museums and historical sites to visit in this one-mile part of town. If you prefer to take it all in from the sidewalks, there are several historic adobe structures built around 1830 to admire. There are also several accurate reconstructions, including the Visitor Center, featuring a fascinating mural depicting 1892 Old Town. Take time to poke around and maybe watch a live re-enactment of work at the blacksmith shop or other places of business. This is a great time to stop for lunch. Or, order takeout to enjoy at the next stop. 3. JUNIPERO SERRA MUSEUM AND PRESIDIO PARK (60 MINUTES) Just above Old Town on Presidio Hill, the splendid Junipero Serra Museum awaits. The building itself is a

sight to behold. Built in the late 1920s, it is often mistaken for the old Spanish mission itself. Today, it showcases the Kumeyaay Indians and California’s first permanent European settlement with intriguing artifacts, relics, and antiques. The museum is only open to the public on weekends, but it is a great place to stop on weekdays, too. Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1960, Presidio Park offers expansive views and many historical markers, murals, and statuary, including the Padre Cross monument, erected in 1913 using ruins from the original buildings. 4. MISSION BASILICA SAN DIEGO DE ALCALÁ (60 MINUTES) California’s first Mission Church, Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcalá, was founded in 1769 on Presidio Hill and relocated inland in 1774. It has a colorful history with many chapters of struggle and violence. To get a good feel for what life was like in the area’s early years as a colony, take a stroll through the Visitor Center museum and gift shop. The serene gardens invite you to pause and reflect for a while. 5. MISSION TRAILS REGIONAL PARK (90–180 MINUTES) Regardless of how much energy and time you have left, there’s a trail waiting for you in this 5,700–acre regional park. The Visitor Center is definitely worth checking out, so park as close as possible. Featuring video displays, archaeological exhibits, and a library, the Visitor Center gives you a fabulous perspective of what life was like here long before the first Europeans arrived. If you want to stretch your legs, follow the paved Father Junípero Serra Trail to the Old Mission Dam. If you’re fit and a frequent hiker, fill your water bottle and trek all the way to Kwaay Paay Peak at an elevation of 1,194 feet. It’s a tough climb, but when you see the view as the sun sets, you’ll agree there is no better way to wrap up this exciting, historical day. ✲

A sluggish metabolism, low libido, and unexplainable weight gain are just a few of the changes we experience as we age. Fortunately, there are people like Tracy Duhs and Steve Martinez who share a passion for helping individuals who want to rediscover their “get up and go.” Modern Wellness Advocate Tracy Duhs has always had a talent for thinking outside the box. As a functional medicine practitioner, founder of Hydrate at The Sanctuary Wellness Experience in San Diego, and host of the Hydrate podcast, she has pioneered an approach to natural health and wellness that integrates easily into everyday life. Steve Martinez, a certified physician’s assistant specializing in hormone balancing and peptide therapy, is the founder of the Restore Wellness Clinic in McAllen, Texas. Tracy and Steve have formed a partnership, expanding The Sanctuary’s scope to offer a range of promising new therapies. Who can they help? “Many individuals with a variety of symptoms will benefit from hormone optimization,” Steve says. “If you feel sluggish, often tired, or lethargic, it’s definitely an option.” But it has to be done correctly. “Our therapies are tailored to what the body needs, but first we must fully understand you,” Steve explains. “After we feel we really know your whole story, we can prescribe the best course of treatment. If hormone optimization is in order, I usually recommend bioidentical hormone replacement therapy as opposed to synthetic, because the hormones are a natural fit. Another exciting option is peptide therapy. Peptides are comprised of amino acids that act as signaling agents to stimulate the body to perform a natural function, giving us a tremendous therapeutic opportunity to help the body regenerate and repair itself.” “When people ask me about Hydrate at The Sanctuary Wellness Experience, I say we help people come alive again,” Tracy says. “This is the new wave of restorative medicine. It’s a great time to get on board.” BECCA BATISTA

RIDE LIKE THE WIND

Why electric bikes are here to stay BY ALEXANDRA EWART

Remember how that firm hand felt against your back when you were learning to ride a bike? It gave you the power you needed—until it was no longer necessary. Well, that’s how it feels to ride an electric bike. I know, because I started test riding electric bikes last week, and I’m already a believer.

Electric bikes make it easier to explore San Diego together. 64

ABOUTTOWNMAGAZINES.COM

The Pedego Tandem is currently the world’s only electric bicycle built for two.

THE BASICS

GET FITTER AND GO FARTHER

Electric bikes are bicycles with integrated electric motors and batteries that can be used for propulsion. The motor is usually mounted near the crank or in one of the hubs, and the battery mounts on a rear rack, the downtube, or seat tube. Most electric bikes have a top speed of 20 miles per hour and a range of 20 to 35 miles per charge.

As the popularity of electric bikes soars, studies are emerging to determine the fitness benefits. One Brigham Young University study concludes that electric bikes are “an excellent form of aerobic or cardiovascular exercise, even for experienced mountain bikers who regularly engage in this fitness activity.” Conducted last year, the study recruited 33 subjects, mostly male between ages 18 and 65, to ride either regular mountain bikes or electric, pedal-assist mountain bikes on a rolling six-mile, single-track course through the Utah countryside. Afterward, they compared the subjects’ heart rates and found that riding an electric bike requires almost as much physical exertion as riding a traditional mountain bike.

In 2015, California was the first state to adopt a three-class approach to standardized regulation based on the electric bike’s maximum speed, wattage, and operation. Class 1 bikes (pedal-assist only with no throttle) and Class 2 bikes (pedal-assist with a throttle) have a maximum speed of 20 miles per hour. Class 3 bikes (pedal-assist) can reach a maximum speed of 28 miles per hour and require a license and registration to operate. In San Diego, Class 1 and Class 2 electric bikes are allowed where traditional bicycles are permitted, including bike lanes, roads, and several multiuse trails and bike-only paths, unless otherwise posted.

HEAD FOR THE HILLS It’s such an empowering feeling the first time you head up a hill on an electric bike. My first hill was just a few blocks from the Pedego Electric Bikes La Jolla dealership. Pedaling fast in low gear, I tapped the pedal assist button at the bottom of the hill. In an instant, I felt that hand press firmly on my back. I tapped the pedal assist button once more, and I felt more push. One more tap on the button, and I was Wonder Woman—atop the hill and ready for more! There are always more hills to tackle in San Diego, as well as headwinds and races home at sunset.

Electric bikes allow us to go farther faster, and we can take the whole family along. Pedego, the oldest and largest electric bike manufacturer in the United States, produces electric bikes for all ages. Actor William Shatner, now nearly 90 years old, became a spokesperson for Pedego Electric Bikes after he’d been a customer for many years. To date, he has purchased 16 electric bikes for his three-generation family. “It’s great, because I can keep up with the 20-yearolds in our family,” he says. “In fact, I go a little faster!” Electric bikes aren’t going to replace cars or traditional bicycles anytime in the near future, but they definitely are more than a passing trend. Besides the physical benefits, electric bikes offer low cost, energy efficient, emission-free transportation that is just plain fun. Why not rent one and see what all the excitement is about? If you like, I’ll race you to the top of your first hill. ✲

A FRESH NEW FACE

Raja Nalluri brings more than 18 years of experience and advanced technology to his new La Jolla practice

He may be a fresh face in San Diego, but Dr. Raja Nalluri is a board-certified plastic surgeon who has treated more than 12,000 patients thoroughout his career. We’re excited that Dr. Nalluri moved the Nalluri Plastic Surgery & Laser Center to La Jolla earlier this year, and we’re honored to introduce him to you.

NOUSHIN NOURIZADEH

About the doctor: First, welcome! Can you tell us what you enjoy about your career in plastic surgery? RN: I chose the field of plastic surgery while exploring specialties as a student at Case Western Reserve University and continue to be fascinated with the field. As a plastic surgeon, I work with a patient to achieve goals they can actually see. Amazing transformations are possible, and I feel rewarded when I see how happy my patients are with the results. What’s more, these transformations aren’t just physical. Patients leave my office feeling happier and more self-confident. About the practice: What kinds of surgery and laser treatments does Nalluri Plastic Surgery & Laser Center provide? RN: Beyond traditional plastic surgery treatments for the face and body, we offer a wide variety of less invasive treatments including advanced laser treatments, TightSculpting and CoolSculpting, treatments that can tighten skin and spot reduce fat, as well as laser treatments for snoring, feminine rejuvenation, acne, scarring, wrinkles, cellulite, and more. These newer therapies are producing wonderful results for both women and men who want to tighten the skin around their eyes, minimize the look of a double chin, or melt away stubborn mid-section love handles. Laser treatments are considerably less expensive, require less recovery time, have fewer risks, and are less painful than traditional surgery. Advanced laser technologies incorporate a new generation of lasers and blend a couple of different natural light-based treatments with nothing artificial to produce beautiful, lasting results. The laser therapy treats the collagen under the surface and the skin surface above, which results in tighter, firmer skin. Some people even see results after one treatment. A blend of laser technologies is used to tighten skin and melt fat at the waist, tummy, arms, and other areas. About patient care: What can we expect on our first office visit? RN: We focus on concierge patient care. I personally perform all surgeries and procedures. Initial consultations are complimentary, and patients are welcome to make an appointment at the center, which is open and adheres to safety protocols, or a Televisit appointment via smartphone. I’m looking forward to meeting my new neighbors! More about Dr. Nalluri: Dr. Nalluri has been recognized for his work by U.S. News & World Report, Castle Connolly (2011 through 2020), Cosmopolitan Magazine (Hot List), and America’s Top Doctors. He has most recently earned Top Doctors San Diego 2020 and Best of La Jolla Light Readers Choice Awards. To book online or learn more, visit nalluri.com or call or text the center at 858.299.8999. ✲
