San Clemente artist and owner of Rusted Indigo, Kelly Duffy, says there’s nothing better than creating oceans as a full-time job. Her handmade resin pieces take a couple of days to make. “Each wave is a layer of resin that needs a good 24 hours to dry before adding another layer,” Kelly explains. “The wave effect is created by using a heat gun to gently blow the white resin over the colored portion. The white pigment mixed into the resin creates little cells to make the ocean effect when heated. That’s what makes the epoxy resin look like waves.” These three items are some of the functional art pieces Kelly makes. “I used a mint/seafoam green then blended it into a teal, then blended the teal into a rich blue pigment.”

According to The Bikini Shoppe, chocolate brown is the new black. Warm and inviting, chocolate brown complements a wide range of skin tones. Perhaps another reason this color feels so right is that it is stirring our nostalgic sentiment for the 1990s, when brown was a popular hue. See for yourself at The Bikini Shoppe just off the Oceanfront Boardwalk in Mission Beach, where you’ll find a scrumptious variety of swimwear from string bikinis, to tankinis, to one-piece suits, in a range of chocolate hues from cocoa, to milk, to dark!

{ GARDEN } Wooden birdhouses imitate a cavity nest inside a tree
HOME TWEET HOME Inviting birds to stay and nest
PHOTOS BY DONNY MICHEL
Spring has arrived and, for most species of wild birds, it is the time to mate, build nests, lay eggs, and raise offspring. As a typical spring morning dawns in San Diego, we hear them chirp and call as though they’re greeting the sunrise, but they are communicating with each other. Throughout the day, they frantically seek their mates and fight for territory so they might settle down and start a family. With a little luck, they may choose to nest in your garden.
18
ABOUTTOWNMAGAZINES.COM
Besides bringing beauty, color, music, and a connection to nature to the garden, birds assist us with a very important garden chore: pest control. In the spring, when garden pests rear their ugly heads, birds are busy filling the mouths of their hatchlings with protein-rich insects. They comb branches, buds, blooms, and soil for ants, aphids, caterpillars, earwigs, grasshoppers, grubs, mites, and other pests. Create an attractive environment for birds to nest and you create a win-win arrangement for everyone, except the garden-spoiling pests. More than 500 bird species have been recorded in San Diego County. Many of these species are called “cavity nesters” because they build their nests and nurture their offspring inside sheltered chambers or cavities. Common cavity-nesting birds that breed regularly in San Diego County include the Western Bluebird, the Mountain Chickadee, the Red-shafted Flicker, the Ash-throated Flycatcher, the Pacific Slope Flycatcher, the Purple Martin, the White-breasted Nuthatch, the Sierra Red-breasted Sapsucker, the European Starling, the Tree Swallow, the Violet-green Swallow, the Oak Titmouse, the Bewick’s House Wren, and many Woodpeckers including the Acorn, Downy, Hairy, Ladder-backed, Nuttall’s, and White-headed varieties. If any of these species take up residence in your garden this spring, you’re in for an enriching and rewarding experience. Pat Asakawa, a member of the Master Gardener Association for San Diego County and co-chair of the Master Gardener Birdhouse Committee, heads up an effort to make gourd birdhouses that accommodate the preferences of local cavity nesters. “Birds want to breed and raise their families in relative peace and quiet, so it’s best to install birdhouses in the late winter or early spring in a calm corner of the garden, near a water source. They also find plants native to California attractive.” Pat advises. “Most birdhouses should be placed between six and ten feet high, but Woodpeckers, Flickers, and Flycatchers nest higher—as high as twenty feet.”

“When hanging a gourd birdhouse, it’s important that the entrance faces away from the prevailing wind and it doesn’t have too much swing,” Pat adds. “The birdhouses that we create have one and one-half to two-inch entrance holes, to accommodate the various preferences of our local cavity nesters.” Pat and her team of Master Gardener volunteers handcraft their birdhouses from gourds, while other birdhouse committee members create wooden birdhouses from reclaimed and recycled wood. The gourds are grown in San Diego County by Master Gardeners, friends of Master Gardeners, and at times they are purchased from Welburn Gourd Farm in Fallbrook. The birdhouses, along with birdfeeders, solitary bee homes, and wood bug boxes—all crafted by Master Gardener volunteers—are available for sale online. The Master Gardener Association also offers educational events to the public throughout the year where the handcrafted items are available. All sales proceeds go to support the educational mission of the Master Gardener Association of San Diego County. Interested in adding another dimension to your garden and contributing to the efforts of an excellent local gardening resource? Join The Master Gardener Association’s mailing list and buy a birdhouse online. Your garden and our local wild birds will thank you for it. ✲ Pat Asakawa is a San Diego Master Gardener. If you have any gardening questions, you can contact the Master Gardener Association at help@mastergardenersd.org or call 858.822.6910.

{ HAPPENING }
SURVIVING INSANITY
Linda Daniels has tips for today’s real estate market TIPS FOR BUYERS 1. Know what you can afford The key components of affordability are what you have saved for a down payment, how much you earn, any debts you may have, and your credit score. Be strategic and know what you can afford. 2. Get pre-approved for your loan A pre-approval letter is a written agreement from your lender to fund your mortgage. Once you know the precise amount of your mortgage, you can calculate the amount you can offer for the house. 3. Be realistic Recognize that you will not likely find everything you want and make a list of what is most important to you. Many properties are selling for well over their asking price, so consider shopping for homes at a lower list price. If you can afford $850,000, identify homes around $750,000 since so many multiple offers are going over asking for $100,000 plus! Repeatedly losing deals can become exhausting.
TIPS FOR SELLERS 1. Price your home competitively Inventory may be low, but for maximum interest and showings, appeal to as much of the buyer pool as possible. Trust your realtor’s expertise and price the home at, or just under market value to generate maximum offers.
With more than four decades in San Diego real estate, Linda Daniels, leader of The Daniels Group at Willis Allen Real Estate in La Jolla, thought she had seen it all. But after this past year with homes selling overnight, and often fetching multiple offers above asking price, Linda simply shakes her head. “Utter insanity,” she sighs. “We must remain calm, overly prepared, and work at lightning speed. Real estate is a full-service job, and in this market, we must be full-service real estate agents!” Linda offers these tips if you are thinking of buying or selling a home. 20
ABOUTTOWNMAGAZINES.COM
2. Make your home appealing to buyers Walk through your front door as if the home is not yours and imagine what buyers will notice. Fix the small things that are broken, clear away personal effects, touch up paint, and clean thoroughly. The house’s curb appeal is important because it gives buyers the first impression, so add flowers this spring. As a full-service real estate agent, Linda arranges everything for her clients from decluttering and making repairs to landscaping and staging the property. Her process eliminates the stress of prelisting preparation. 3. Don’t second guess yourself Decide on the minimum sales price you are willing to accept and do not waver. If you get an offer that meets or is over your minimum price, you have succeeded in the goal of selling your house. There is no shortage of real estate agents, but both buyers and sellers should look for a professional with a proven track record and all the knowledge, experience, integrity, resources, tools, and technologies it takes to help them buy or market their house. For more advice, contact The Daniels Group, 858.361.5561; info@thedanielsgroup.com. ✲

Roya Parviz has a big heart and a keen eye for fashion. From the day she opened Satori Designs on Solana Beach’s South Cedros Avenue, she has followed her vision to present customers with a stunning array of apparel and accessories while also giving back to her community. “I am always looking for artful, interesting pieces, whether it is in a mix of textures, prints, embroideries, or color combinations,” Roya says. “I incorporate pieces from local and international artists to curate an eclectic collection.” She notes that with the easing of pandemic regulations, travel, engagements, weddings, getaways, and date nights are back and are cherished more than ever. “My newest collection is a reflection of joyful times and celebrations,” Roya says. It is always a joy to step into Satori Designs. The shelves and clothing racks are filled with unique, colorful garments and accessories that have an intriguing story behind them. Often, Roya will pull out a robe or a pair of earrings and lovingly tell a customer about what part of the world it is from and how it was made.

FRESH BREWS AND FRESH IDEAS
Mikkeller Brewing San Diego brings a world of beer to our doorstep
In the city known as The Craft Beer Capital of America, it’s not easy for a single brewing company to get our attention. After all, at most recent count, San Diego County is home to more than 150 breweries and tasting rooms with countless beers to get excited about. But sometimes, we come across someone who’s thinking a little further outside the box, and they deserve to be noticed. Mikkeller Brewing San Diego opened its doors six years ago this spring, after the Danish-based microbrewery, Mikkeller, acquired the Alesmith brewery plant in Miramar. The acquisition was an instant “win-win” for Mikkeller, who doubled their total production, and for San Diegans, who could start discovering Mikkeller beers and ales crafted in their own backyard. Fast forward to today, when Mikkeller Brewing San Diego is a multifaceted brewery producing around 15,000 barrels of beer per year, and home to two of fifty Mikkeller taprooms to be discovered around the world. The brewery’s international flair has blended well into the local landscape at its two locations: the brewery and tap room in Miramar and the tasting bar in Little Italy. The production team is determined and focused, with an eye to making nuanced beers that work into their program of super fresh, hoppy beers, as well as classic European styles. Playful brews, such as Berliner Weisse Raspberry brewed with coffee and raspberries, and Beer Geek Breakfast, a core-range oatmeal stout brewed with whole bean coffee, are getting rave reviews. Visitors to the brewery taproom in Miramar can choose from twentyfour beers on tap. They can enjoy the outdoor patio or the sleekly decorated indoor space with tables, chairs, and bar tops made from Danish wood. In Little Italy, another taproom is tucked away in the neighborhood—a hidden gem with eighteen beers on tap. In keeping with the company’s stellar reputation for fresh ideas, Mikkeller Brewing San Diego has also devised a way for San Diegans to taste the freshest weekly releases at home. Beer Mail is a subscription service that guarantees the monthly delivery of eight different Mikkeller beers, including their freshest releases in one box. The price per month is just $39.99. Beer Mail subscribers look forward to getting a taste of the newest and most talked-about brews, which is a great idea, since most limited production beers sell out fast. For more information or to sign up for Beer Mail, visit shop.mikkellersd.com. ✲

Recently, I chose a day to escape and made appointments for a massage and a facial at The Spa at Torrey Pines, located inside The Lodge at Torrey Pines. I started the morning just north of the resort for a short hike at the stunning Torrey Pines State

ushered to the spa through the Lodge’s gorgeous, wood-beamed hallways that pay homage to California Craftsman architecture. The spa itself is a 9,500-square-foot sanctuary of relaxation, featuring fourteen treatment rooms.

{ DAY TRIP }
Centered in Encinitas THE NEXT TIME YOU FEEL SCATTERED and need a day to center yourself, spend a day in Encinitas. This friendly coastal city has a mellow vibe and a worldwide reputation as a great place to hang ten. In fact, Surfer Magazine has named Encinitas one of the top ten surf towns in the United States. But surf is only the beginning. Encinitas has exceptional gardens, unique boutiques, engaging art displays, and historic buildings and museums inviting you to dive in and reconnect with yourself. If you’re a surfer and the surf report looks promising, bring your board and head straight for Moonlight State Beach. From there, depending on the conditions, local surfers may point you to Seaside, Cardiff Reef, Swami’s, or one of the several tidal beach breaks and jetties in between. Prefer to hang loose? Head straight to D Street Beach, just south of Moonlight Beach. It’s an exceptional place to watch waves rolling in and seagulls riding the winds. When you’re ready to look inward, drive south on Coast Highway to the Self-Realization Fellowship Meditation Gardens. This beautiful sanctuary in the bluffs above Swami’s Beach has reopened its iron gates after a two-year closure due to the coronavirus pandemic. Stroll through the spectacular gardens and behold the colorful foliage, meditation nooks, koi ponds, and ocean vistas. Take time to appreciate this inspirational setting where visitors from around the world come to pray, study, and meditate. Spending the morning connecting with surf, sand, and self builds up an appetite, so your next stop is Encinitas 101 Main Street (also known as South Coast Highway 101). This laid-back strip of one-of-akind shops and eateries has more than eighty retail shops to investigate. This historic downtown strip captures the Encinitas vibe with vintage thrift shops, busy coffee bars, and creative retail spaces. Grab a latte, window shop, and pop into the stores that intrigue you.

Two shops you don’t want to miss are directly across the road from one another. At Queen Eileen’s, the inviting window display is only the beginning, so be sure to walk in—and expect to be there a while. This amazing gift emporium, which began as a singing and dancing telegram service, is a treasure trove of imaginative and fun gift items. Even if you don’t have any gift-giving occasions on the horizon, the merchandise is sure to make you smile. On the opposite side of the street, Bliss 101 is another great store to explore. It provides a gallery for local artists in addition to a well-curated collection of home furnishings, houseware items, handcrafted jewelry, and a heavenly assortment of scented candles. After enjoying some retail therapy and great food downtown, drive over to San Diego Botanic Garden. Online reservations are encouraged prior to your arrival, so be sure to book a mid-afternoon reservation on the day before your trip. Your tickets will have a one-hour time window. Plan to stay until closing time because there is so much to explore in this amazing oasis of more than 5,000 plant species and varieties in fifteen separate gardens, each representing a different region in the world. There are also twelve demonstration gardens, the largest children’s garden on the west coast, and the nation’s largest collection of bamboo plants. Find a spot or two along the way that call to you and linger awhile. At the end of a sun-filled day, Encinitas is a great place to watch the sunset. A few favorite spots are the top of the stairs at Swami’s Beach, the top of Beacon’s Beach along Neptune, and the steps leading to Grandview Beach in Leucadia. For more ideas and information, visit encinitasvisitorscenter.com and, if you’re there on a weekday, stop into the Encinitas Visitors Center in the Encinitas Chamber of Commerce building and tell them About Town sent you. ✲

The Charms of Wilmington History and beaches on North Carolina’s coast BY WENDY VAN DIVER
Wilmington Riverwalk and Cape Fear River
64
ABOUTTOWNMAGAZINES.COM
TUCKED BETWEEN THE ATLANTIC OCEAN and Cape Fear River on North Carolina’s southeastern coast, the port city of Wilmington beckons visitors with a fascinating nautical legacy that spans centuries and island beaches that soothe the soul. Wilmington is a peaceful place, the kind of destination that encourages you to settle in and explore at your leisure.
RICH IN HISTORY In the mid 1700s, the Cape Fear River was the region’s center for trade, politics, and culture. Wilmington was incorporated in 1739, and between 1850 and 1860, it was the largest city in North Carolina. During the Civil War, Wilmington was the last Atlantic Coast port of the Confederacy to remain open to trade. Much effort has been put into preserving the city’s heritage—more than 230 city blocks are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. It’s easy to appreciate the city’s rich heritage as you stroll alongside the Cape Fear River on the nearly two-mile long Cape Fear Riverwalk, admiring the historic architecture and river paddleboats. River cruises and horse-drawn carriage rides are other popular ways to immerse yourself in Wilmington’s connection with the past. Care to take a deeper dive? There is so much history in Wilmington, you can choose to focus on the nineteenth century, the Civil War, the Reconstruction Era, or World War II and have plenty to see and do for an entire day. The largest land–sea battle of the Civil War was fought at Fort Fisher, located at Kure Beach, an easy thirty-minute drive from Wilmington. Today, Fort Fisher State Historic

Site and Museum is the South’s largest earthen fort, featuring breathtaking walking trails overlooking the sea and many engaging exhibits. In the 1940s, 243 ships were built in the Wilmington shipyard and the city was a hub of World War II home front activities. In 2020, Wilmington became the first city in the country to be designated an American World War II Heritage City for its efforts to preserve its WWII shipbuilding heritage, restoration of wartime facilities, and recognition of veterans. The Battleship North Carolina, one of the most decorated battleships of her time, is moored in Cape Fear Harbor. The public is welcome to walk her nine restored decks, which provide an excellent representation of the life and challenges of her crew.
ISLAND BEACHES
Carolina Beach Boardwalk
66
ABOUTTOWNMAGAZINES.COM
Three pristine island beaches are within easy access from Wilmington, making it easy to divide the day between touring the sites and relaxing in powder-white sand. The best-known is Carolina Beach, which has a popular boardwalk featuring endless food stands and watersports ranging from fishing and kayaking to standup paddle boarding and surfing. Carolina Beach State Park is home to thirteen different habitats among its 761 acres. Hikers follow trails where Venus flytraps grow, and nature lovers visit in the late summer and early fall to see the shoreline nesting sites of the loggerhead sea turtle.
Wrightsville Beach is known for its crystal blue waters, expansive sands, and active island lifestyle. It boasts a walkable beach town and the Wrightsville Beach Museum of History, which includes a renovated 1924 historic cottage—one of the last surviving examples of original Wrightsville Beach architecture. Less than forty miles off the coast of Wrightsville Beach, scuba divers found a rare treasure: one of the largest concentrations of giant prehistoric megalodon teeth in the world! From Wrightsville Beach, seashell collectors and birdwatchers will want to put a day trip to Masonboro Island Reserve at the top of their lists. The 5,600-acre island is a paradise of unspoiled beaches, salt marshes, and tidal flats. Besides being home to Fort Fisher State Historic Site, Kure Beach offers the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher with more than 2,500 animal residents. But for many, the quiet of Kure Beach is its most appealing feature. At low tide, rare rock formations of seashell and coral with an estimated origin ranging from 12,000 to 80,000 years ago, reveal themselves. ✲

DOG BEACH BOUND
What to know before you go
San Diego County is home to four beautiful beaches where your dog is welcome to romp, play, and splash off-leash with you and other like-minded dogs. Before you grab the closest leash and head for the car, take care of these things first, so you go prepared.
72
ABOUTTOWNMAGAZINES.COM
1. SHOTS AND TAGS Since your pet will be mingling with other canines, adults, and children, be sure all vaccinations are up to date. Also check your dog’s license to be sure it is current and that a license tag is securely connected to the collar.
2. SOCIABILITY AND OBEDIENCE Does your dog get nervous or hostile around other dogs? Wait until you have mastered some basic commands and then plan on keeping your dog on-leash in the quietest part of the beach. Even if your dog is the life of the party, it helps to practice the basic commands (come, sit, stay, and leave it) before you head for the beach. “It’s always important to know your animal and when it’s safe to let them off leash and interact with other dogs,” says Cody Decker, who owns Decker’s Dog + Cat with his wife Kensey in La Jolla and Bay Park.
SHUTTERSTOCK.COM / REBECCAASHWORTH
3. LEASH LAWS AND OTHER RULES The hours and boundaries for off-leash areas can change according to the season and local rules, so check online first. “If you’re taking your first trip to the dog beach, packing a fifteen- to twenty-foot leash is a great way to start building trust with your dog and ensure a safer experience,” Kensey says. She adds that some beaches require a shorter leash, so know the leash laws for your destination.
4. SAFETY FIRST Since dogs can suffer from dehydration, sunburn, and insect bites, bring along plenty of water in a reliable drinking device, sunscreen, and bug repellent, and make a mental note of where the closest vet clinic is located. “If the sand feels hot, be careful because dogs’ feet burn and you don’t want to risk injuries due to the heat,” Cody says. “And bring a shade source like a pop-up tent on a hot day.” Dog life jackets are also advisable for even the best swimmers in case they suddenly grow tired or get caught in an undercurrent.
WHAT TO PACK Car seat cover Portable water bowl Canine sunscreen & bug repellent Extra roll of waste bags Extra leash Snap collar with ID tag & contact info First aid kit Waterless shampoo Grooming wipes Microfiber drying towel Shammy towel
5. GOOD DOG BEACH ETIQUETTE Always clean up after your pet right away and dispose of waste bags properly. It’s wise to have an extra roll of waste bags in a dispenser connected to your dog’s leash. Keep your eyes on your dog to be sure they are safe, happy, and not pestering others. Teach your dog to respect wildlife and discourage them from getting aggressive with birds and marine life. ✲

Saluting Our Naval Heritage A newbie takes a self-guided tour BY NATALIE DAL PRAU
When I relocated to San Diego last year, I knew very little about this town’s rich naval heritage. To gain a better understanding, I headed out with my family to some of the more prominent attractions in our area. Seeing history up close elicits a lot of complicated emotions. While my daughter enjoyed exploring ships and museum displays, my thoughts kept drifting to the countless sailors, researchers, and military personnel who worked hard and sacrificed in these very spaces.
My history lesson was both enlightening and sobering, and I walked away with a new appreciation for the brave men and women that continue to work hard at our naval bases here today. The Maritime Museum of San Diego is a must-visit for those interested in learning about historic vessels, as well as the navy’s overall influence on our region. Here you can climb aboard the Star of India, the world’s oldest active sailing ship, along with several other vessels; check out countless models and artifacts and even take a naval history boat tour. Climbing down into the USS Dolphin submarine gave me a small taste of what sailors experienced living and working on the vessel. The close living quarters and tiny sleeping spaces are positioned right in the middle of countless buttons and controls that were once operated by naval and civilian researchers. Exploring the ship is a bit claustrophobic, but gives a fascinating glimpse into history. Side note: If you visit the Dolphin with children, make sure to have them look through the periscope (although adults will appreciate the ship’s stunning view of the San Diego Bay just as much)! The Swift Boat Naval History Tour at the museum is popular with both out-of-towners and locals alike. The 75-minute narrated tour gives passengers an overview of San Diego’s military history while cruising under the Coronado Bay Bridge and around Naval Base San Diego, Naval Amphibious Base, and Naval Air Station North

Island. Families with high schoolers should consider taking the tour as a supplemental history lesson. Seeing these places in person is remarkable and gives a much better perspective than a textbook ever could. The USS Midway Museum is another great stop for history buffs. The longest-serving aircraft carrier of the twentieth century now houses thirty restored aircraft and almost ten acres of exhibits and displays. Put yourself (literally!) in the pilot seat in the Air Combat 360 flight simulator, inspect World War II-era aircraft up close, or take a walk below deck, where sailors lived, worked, ate, and socialized. The Battle of Midway theater features a must-watch 15-minute film called Voices of Midway, which explains the events of the battle through the people who lived it. You could easily spend all day at the museum and still feel like there’s more to see, do, and experience. Many of us have enjoyed the shopping and dining at Liberty Station, but how often do we stop to think about the location’s past? The Point Loma development was once home to San Diego’s Naval Training Center, and architectural artifacts are still present throughout the grounds. I took a virtual walking tour on Liberty Station’s website and was blown away by just how much history has taken place there, particularly during World War II. During the peak of the war, nearly 33,000 men lived at the training center. Sailors prepared for combat in the very spaces where we now leisurely stroll with our families—a fact that should not be taken lightly. ✲

PRIZING THE EYES
Why annual exams are essential for all
binocular vision system, infection, inflammation, injury, and even disorders stemming from electronic device usage. “In my more than fifteen years as an optometrist, some of the scariest and most threatening conditions I have encountered have been very silent when it came to symptoms, especially in the early stages,” Dr. Camen says. “It isn’t until things have progressed beyond a certain point that the patient has any inkling that something might be amiss. Unfortunately, by then they may have already suffered irreparable functional and visual impairment due to possible malignancies, glaucomatous nerve loss, diabetic retinopathy, and more.” Little is required of the patient during a routine eye exam. After the complete medical history is reviewed, the optometrist performs a series of preliminary tests to determine a quick, but effective, neurological assessment. The patient’s refractive (nearsighted, far-sighted, or astigmatic) status and appropriateness of glasses or contact lens correction is determined.
DONNY MICHEL
How important are healthy eyes and good vision to your way of life? Our eyes are a precious gift, yet we often take them for granted until we squint or strain to see. Since many eye and vision problems may initially have no signs or symptoms, the American Optometric Association recommends routine, comprehensive exams to evaluate how clearly each eye is functioning and overall eye health. “My personal mantra is: ‘You don’t know until you look,’ and early detection is paramount,” says Dr. Jesse Camen, an optometrist and head of Camen Eye Care’s Total Performance Vision Center at Be Seen Optics in La Jolla. “For this reason, I recommend annual comprehensive eye exams, regardless of age, overall health, and vision classification. People who have preexisting comorbidities or are at high-risk levels for eye diseases may need to be seen multiple times per year.” Eye health is not measured by how well we see, and eye exams are not solely about vision. Optometrists look for a myriad of other conditions as evidence of systemic disease such as diabetes, hypertension, thyroid disorders, imbalances to the

Once a prescription for vision correction is decided upon, the optometrist performs a thorough series of tests to determine the health of the eyes. “I look at both the anterior and interior structures of the eye to identify potential diseases and disorders,” Dr. Camen says. She does not use the often-feared air puff test, but rather a drop-free and much more patient-friendly method to measure intraocular pressure. “I also highly recommend retinal imaging to provide a detailed, photo-documented history of the patient’s eye health in the years ahead.” Optometrists can be thought of as the “primary care physicians” of the eyes. They are specifically trained, licensed, and able to prescribe medications to treat most known ocular diseases such as glaucoma, dry eye, allergies, injuries, as well as to monitor diabetic eye disease and age-related macular degeneration. When conditions such as retinal tears or tumors are detected, or when a detachment repair, cataract extraction, or intraocular injection is required, the optometrist will refer the patient to a specialist within the ophthalmologic community. Many optometrists specialize in specific areas. Dr. Camen recently added Sports and Performance Optometry to her practice and created Camen Eye Care’s Total Performance Vision Center. “Whether you’d like to target your athletic ability or performance at school, work, or life in general, the tools and technologies of the optometric profession can lead to definite and measurable gains,” Dr. Camen explains. “Myopia management, the role of nutrition in ocular disease, and preserving one’s vision are also important to me and my practice.” For more information or to schedule an eye exam, visit beseenoptics.com ✲

SIMPLY FRESH
The Lodge at Torrey Pines’ New Executive Chef Kelli Crosson presents the flavors of spring
As a chef, is it important to be part of a thriving culinary community? Absolutely, on many levels. On a personal level, I need colleagues to talk to who are in similar situations. As far as food goes, the community continually keeps me learning, inspired, and pushing the culinary envelope. Do you have a personal soft spot for any dishes on the current menu at A.R. Valentien? At this time of year, I admit I crave wild mushrooms, especially morels mushrooms with fresh English peas and ramps. Ramps are pungent wild onions that have the flavor of blended garlic and onion. And duck, always duck! The Roasted Liberty Duck Breast is one of the most popular items on our menu and I must admit, it is one of my all-time favorites.

DONNY MICHEL
Why is simplicity important to you when creating a dish? Conveying simplicity through dishes allow fresh and flavorful ingredients to shine. It shows that we’re using and highlighting the best ingredients, instead of hiding them behind a variety of sauces or garnishes. With a bounty of fresh produce and provisions at your fingertips, what ingredients are you finding most inspiring this spring? Spring is the best! We come off the heavy winter bounty of squash, potatoes, and cabbages, and begin to lighten up. I love spring onions, green garlic, and the idea that some citrus (typically winter fruit) hangs on the trees until May, which allows us to keep things bright.

It’s easy to be swept away when we enter A. R. Valentien, the signature dining room at The Lodge at Torrey Pines. Appointed with intimate leather booths and an inviting outdoor terrace, it features stunning views of Torrey Pines Golf Course and beyond. But we are equally swept away by the menu. Recently, Kelli Crosson, who has been a member of A. R. Valentien’s culinary team for almost thirteen years, took the helm. She now oversees the culinary operations for the entire resort with a fresh culinary perspective that deserves our attention.
What can we look forward to finding on the menu this spring? As a chef, I love this time of year because many intriguing vegetables are sprouting up again! Besides ramps, which grow in the wild, I am procuring tender asparagus, tangy radishes, flavorful artichokes, and juicy berries to inspire and highlight our dishes. It is inspiring to introduce springtime ingredients to the signature dishes at A. R. Valentien. ✲
