Suburban

By: Diane Meehl

‘TWAS THE BEST AND WORST OF TIMES

It was the worst Christmas in Meehl family history.

I was very pregnant and very, very sick. Not only had my third pregnancy worn me out with two little ones to chase, I wrestled with morning sickness all day long. Then, right before Christmas, I got a sinus infection. And, the flu. Yeah, you read that right! I could barely muster the energy to shop for my own kids, let alone engage in all the festivities of the season. I didn’t even send Christmas cards. It was pretty grim. (Suburban grim, not big picture grim, I must clarify!) On Christmas morning, I dragged myself downstairs to at least be physically present for the excitement. My husband juggled cooking and wrangling gifts to bring to the family Christmas party I would have to miss. The master of ceremonies was down, and he stepped up. He sweetly whipped up some homemade French toast for our darlings to fuel their Christmas craze. That’s when the trouble started. “I hate French toast!” scoffed one cherub, and “Ick! I don’t want this; can we have cereal??!!” whined another. We benched breakfast in the name of choosing battles. We thought that would be easier. Wrong! When my then wriggling preschooler tore open her gifts, it was apparent that I’d not had the time that year to shop as thoughtfully as usual. “I didn’t ask for this! Tell Santa to send it back!” Ah, there was no filter in those days, and she told us over and again about her disappointment with Santa’s choices. (Yes, I have her permission to tell this story, only because she still feels a little sheepish about her behavior that day. She’s seen the video!) Green around the gills, I trudged upstairs, exhausted and sad and horrified by my wee one’s lack of gratitude and Christmas gift etiquette. I dug down deep under the covers to hide, my coping mechanism of choice that day. My husband, though, often handles that sort of thing with humor. He went upstairs and belted

out a twisted Christmas carol not fit for a family magazine, and I laughed so hard I burst into tears. Then, the dog climbed up in the bed, plunked down beside me, and threw up. Sigh. It was a tough day, the kind of story that doesn’t make fodder for the annual Christmas letter. But there was redemption. Somehow my husband managed to leave the house loaded down with gifts to exchange, a casserole dish to share and two scrubbed kids in tow. He made me soup, left me with movies and promised to return as soon as he could. I was grateful that he’d been strong for me when I was weak, that he made me laugh when I cried. I was grateful that even though I felt rotten, the baby inside me was healthy and strong. Now, looking back, that’s what I’d call a very Merry Christmas.

Renowned doctors, expert nursing teams, and the latest technology to back them up, are just some of the reasons Swedish delivers “extraordinary care.” But there’s another side to being extraordinary that’s just as important. It’s a way of being treated that makes you feel like someone truly cares. Because, at Swedish, someone does.

Delectably Simple Party Foods By: Steve Snyder

It’s party season! If you are planning a holiday party and searching for delicious, yet easy appetizers, we have just what you need. The following recipes require minimal ingredients and are easy to prepare. Best of all, they are absolutely delectable.

Tropical Shrimp

Tender shrimp is baked with sweet chili sauce and orange marmalade, then topped with chopped coconut chips. Oh my! Mix equal amounts of Mae Ploy Sweet Chili Sauce and orange marmalade. Toss peeled and deveined raw medium shrimp in the mixture. Bake at 375˚ for 8 -10 minutes. Sprinkle with crushed CoCo Fresh Coconut Chips.

Drain 1 can white beans. Mash with a potato masher, or pulse in food processor to make a chunky puree. Add about 1/4 cup water—just enough to achieve “dip” consistency. Toss with 1/4-lb. shredded Sartori® Rosemary Asiago cheese. Transfer to an oven-safe dish and bake at 400˚ until browned and bubbly, about 8-10 minutes.

Smoked Oysters with Prosciutto

So crazy delicious they delight even those who think they don’t like oysters. For approximately 25 servings – one can Ekone Habanero Smoked Oysters, 4-5 slices prosciutto and 25 cloves of roasted garlic. Wrap smoked oyster (cut large ones in half ) and a piece of roasted garlic with a thin strip of prosciutto. Bake at 350˚ for 10 minutes. Drizzle with good balsamic vinegar.

Chimchurri Party Bread

The big herb flavors of chimichurri sauce take buttery bread to new heights. Slice a large loaf of bread in 1-inch slices, leaving the bottom of the bread intact. Turn and slice across to form a cross-hatch pattern. Place on a baking sheet with a small ball of foil under the bottom of the bread to help it “bloom.” Drizzle generously with melted butter and chimichurri sauce. Bake at 400˚ for 7-10 minutes, or until warmed through.

Bellafill is a unique dermal filler that works much differently than many of the temporary fillers on the market. Bellafill is the only FDA - approved filler with established safety and effectiveness at 5 years post-injection. Dr. Cote' is an expert injector and trains other physicians on how to properly administer Bellafill. This level of expertise ensures that you will receive beautiful, natural looking, and long lasting results.

The best way to determine whether Bellafill is right for you is to speak with Dr. Cote' in person. Please call 425-466-0642 today to schedule a consultation at our Issaquah or Maple Valley Office

Spicy-Sweet Chèvre Cups

Crispy, creamy, sweet, spicy and tangy – all in a single bite. Fill phyllo cups with about a tablespoon of fresh goat cheese. Top with a dollop of pepper jelly and bake at 400˚ for 5 minutes, or until just warmed through. Top each cup with a single Sweety Drop pepper. The ingredients in these recipes are available in our Market. These recipes and more delectably simple appetizers can be found in our Party Foods brochure in the market and on our website.

Neighbors Helping Neighbors: Cheryl’s Garden Angels Rake It Forward

By: Diane Meehl | Photographs Courtesy of Firebug Photography, by Susan Wolfe

“She was just one of those people.” Krista Mui, a mom of two and avid community enthusiast, is telling me about her late friend Cheryl Sherburne. She smiles and fights back brimming tears. “She was loving, gracious, kind and so positive. Even though she had battled cancer for so long herself, she would always be the first to raise her hand to help someone else.” She was also a passionate gardener who lived to the fullest for as long as possible. So when Cheryl passed away in October of 2010, friends from her Moms in Touch group from Sunset Elementary, (a weekly prayer group held at area schools) led by Jan Domek, banded together to plant 500 daffodil bulbs at her home. They were her favorite. Thirty of her friends came out that day to pay tribute, and they ended up lingering and sprucing up the yard a bit — and another “seed” was planted. “Initially, it was important for Kent (Cheryl’s husband) to know how much we loved and admired Cheryl, and it was a much better way than just telling him in a card. Sometimes words are not enough, action is needed to show love and admiration. It was as much to help me feel better as it was a gift to the Sherburne family,” said another friend, Teri Quaranta. None of the women wanted to leave the Sherburne’s home that day. “We enjoyed the fellowship, and we felt so good knowing we could do something for Cheryl’s family,” says Krista. And from there, the idea of continuing the effort of neighbors helping neighbors took root. “We decided to find other people going through a rough patch right in our own neighborhoods, and called ourselves ‘Cheryl’s Garden Angels.’” They planned to stick to just cleaning up yards as they heard of needs in their midst, planting only seeds of hope in tribute.

The Power of One Email

Chery’s Garden Angels take a moment to remember Cheryl with her picture

The opportunity to move ahead with their momentum presented itself just a couple months later. A single mom, Sheila Cecil, was coping with her 5th bout with cancer since 2000. The “Angels” put up Christmas lights for her. As will often happen in a tight-

knit community, Sheila herself walks into Starbucks while we’re chatting. Despite how cancer has made its mark in her life, Sheila is all smiles. “I still see Cheryl as a bright light, still touching lives,” she said. She expresses her continued thanks for the Angel’s hard work — the “Angels” have gone back to her home twice, and thanks Krista especially. But Krista bristles. “All I do is send emails and tell people where to show up! It’s easy. I’m a connector,” she smiles. “I like groups, I like hanging out with moms, so I took on the job of emailing everyone to let them know about what projects are coming up.” The list of “Angels” has grown to 80. And according to the group, if you’ve got an email address and you can rake leaves or pull weeds, you’re in. It became apparent though, that during the winter months, the need for yard cleanup wasn’t as great. “We decided to take on other projects.” For example, in August of 2011, a neighbor was organizing a snack drive for families at Seattle Children’s Hospital. “I sent one email and literally my living room was FULL of stuff within days. One ‘Angel’ backed her freakin' Cadillac Escalade up to my front porch and unloaded the entire back end out of it! I'll never forget it — 105 snack baskets!” The email they received from the organizer of that effort said,

was battling breast cancer. She asked the “Angels” to plant colorful flowers in her backyard, so she could look at them while she rested. She passed on just a few months later. There are so many stories. “It’s really just an easy way to help. You don’t have to be good at gardening. And you can just show up or support the projects that really speak to your heart,” says Krista. For now, she says, the group plans to keep their grassroots mission from growing too far beyond the scope. “We’ll take on whoever wants to help out. But we just ask people to show up for 2 hours. And it’s always like a reunion. It’s as much for us as for the people we help. We have fun!”

The “Angels” help out a senior citizen they met though Eastside Friends of Seniors.

“I feel so blessed to be able to give back. I have food, clothing, and a warm place to sleep. It helps me to live my calling as a Christian, to share my time, talent and treasure. This is a place I can do all three,” said Krista.

Cheryl’s Legacy Continues On the day of our photo shoot, clouds are menacing. By afternoon, the skies brighten and the drizzle stops. Ditching raincoats, everyone agrees the original “Angel,” Cheryl, had something to do

with it. In fact, it has only rained once since they began sprucing up yards five years ago! And they keep telling her story. Gretchen Dowling enjoyed a unique connection with Cheryl that continues. The two met during childbirth preparation classes in 1996, and on the day of her son’s birth, they found Cheryl’s husband, Kent, on the same hospital floor. “Cheryl’s son Derek, and my son, Barret, were born on the same day, and later became best friends.” Today, she continues to keep in touch with Derek, giving him birthday hugs from his mom. “Cheryl was just a kind, gentle, peaceful presence. And, she would have been the first one to pick up a rake for this group,” she said. According to Gretchen, Kent has done a wonderful job raising their two sons since Cheryl’s passing. How does he feel about the group’s efforts to pay tribute to his late wife?

“Cheryl would be flabbergasted to know she was a catalyst for the Garden Angels and that the group has lasted this long. She would probably call them the Guardian Angels. The group has helped so many people over the years, including my family when meals were brought over after I had some surgery this year. The ‘Angels' are a testament to what community service is all about.” Visit Cheryl’s Garden Angels on Facebook.

80 NE GILMAN BLVD ISSAQUAH, WA 98027 www.IntegrityAutoRepair.com 425-557-8665 The “Angels” serve at the Issaquah Food & Clothing Bank.

I have been beyond touched by the human spirit … as a parent who has spent countless days/nights/months at Seattle Children’s Hospital, I can tell you these baskets will make a huge impact … caregivers are often unable to leave their babies to RUN down to the cafeteria … and often end up running on empty. These baskets will help nourish caregivers’ bodies, but spirits as well. Another time, a connection at the Congregations for the Homeless contacted a member about a gentleman who needed $500 to take his young family to Michigan and end their homelessness. The “Angels” were asked to give $5 - $10 to help them out, and raised double what they needed in a jiffy. Other projects include mornings spent sorting supplies at the Issaquah Food & Clothing Bank and Eastside Baby Corner; helping students at the high school with a weeding project, and drives to gather coats, backpacks, and other basic necessities for those in need, to name a few.

105 Snack baskets were prepared for parents at Seattle Children’s Hospital.

And somehow, the needs continue to pop up, just like those spring daffodils.

Cheryl’s Garden Angels Sprinkle Sunshine on the Elderly, and those Coping with Illness While the group is now open to lending a helping hand with or without a shovel in tow, a passion they continue to nourish includes helping older folks, and those coping with serious illness. They met one woman through a connection at Eastside Friends of Seniors, who just couldn’t keep up with the demands of her large, beautiful home near Lake Sammamish. They helped another “Angel’s” parents spruce up their yard and even celebrated their anniversary with them. In April of 2013, a South Cove neighbor and friend to many of the group members

Fashion, FUNdraising, Friendship, ETCETERA By: Diane Meehl

W

hen Susie Cohen walks downstairs each day, she steps right into her office and living room “store.” “I love seeing the clothes every morning,” she smiles. “They keep me company!” So do the women she invites to shop at her trunk shows four times a year, many of them her best girlfriends — all of them, potential girlfriends. The clothing line she represents, ETCETERA, a direct sales model, is headquartered in her native New York. It’s a big hit with ladies of every age and background. “The clothes are high quality, classic pieces you invest in and wear for years. The fabrics are just delicious … many pieces transition from season to season, and day to night,” she says. “They’re just yummy.” There’s something for everyone in each new line that debuts each fall, holiday, spring and summer, Susie explains with bubbly enthusiasm and cheer. “My friend Julie stays home and needs simple clothes that fit her well and feel great,” she says. “Marni works part-time and needs professional, classic outfits.” You get the feeling she knows what every single one of her clients wants, and she calls to let them know if she sees something that’s got their name written all over it. It was longtime friend Marni Macdiarmid who introduced Friend and client Ilyse Wagner says Susie to ETCETERA, because “Every time I go to see Susie, I find a she’d been buying the clothes ‘That’s it; I have to have it’ dress” for years. “With Susie’s background in fashion and her personality, I just knew it would a great fit.” The ladies laugh.

It’s hard to figure out whether the women love the clothes, or Susie, more. “We all just want to support Susie, because she’s the best!” Julie says. “I always want to support my friend; that was the initial connection. But the clothes are top quality; they’re classic, so they help me stay stylish,” Kris Smith chimed in.

Susie promotes her business by word of mouth and social media, primarily. She says she’s successful because her clients feel very comfortable with her. “People are my thing. We’re selling upscale clothing, so I ask questions and find out what they need. If they’re going to be able to buy just one thing, I want it to be fabulous, and something they’ll wear forever!” GIVING BACK IS ALWAYS IN STYLE Giving back is a vital part of Susie’s business plan. “I’m very interested in giving back to the community, and I’m open to partnering with anyone who’s got a cause they want me to help,” she said. “I give away a ton of auction items and gift certificates.

21

If you come and ask me, I’m in!” Most recently she helped the Can-Can Benefit to raise breast cancer awareness. “Even though it’s selling clothes, I’m changing lives in a way, because these clothes help women feel great about themselves.” ETCETERA helps her enjoy all of her passions and talents at once. “I love people; I want to make a difference, and I love women,” she says. Susie Cohen says she loves the flexibility she enjoys running her own business with ETCETERA.

FROM LITTLE GYM TO HIGH FASHION: THE EVOLUTION OF A MOMPRENEUR “Women like to be around each other. They love to support each other and empower each other – and they want flexibility.”

It’s why Susie Cohen says women are embracing entrepreneurism in record numbers. Previously, she and her husband of 20 years, Steve, owned three Little Gym franchises. Her own kids were getting older, she explained, and it was time to have some new energy running the business. A former buyer for Bloomingdales, and someone who always loved to shop for her friends, Susie met with a representative from ETCETERA in 2012, and initially took it on part-time. She fell in love with the clothes and the business model, so she enlisted Steve’s buy-in, and together they open their home for business four times a year for trunk shows that run 24/7, literally. “A lot of women never want to step foot in a mall. So, I also work by appointment. If someone works late and wants to shop at 2:00 in the morning, I’ll open up! Then, the clothes ship in just a week.”

athlete of the

“The initial investment was actually pretty minimal; the only thing I had to invest in was the grids and the rolling racks to showcase the pieces,” she said. ETCETERA sends me the clothes to show, and then I forward them to the next representative when I’m finished,” she said. “Three years later, it’s working out great!”

David Corbitt On Taking Them To The Mat

By: Diane Meehl

Issaquah Senior High’s David Corbitt is living proof you can try something new midway through high school. He’d done it all – football, basketball and even water polo. But in his junior year, he decided to try his hand at wrestling. “Most people start in middle school, so I knew it would be challenging,” he said.

He’d heard it was rigorous, and it was. Some of the outsider perceptions stacked up; others didn’t. First, it’s true that aggressive personalities match up well to the sport. “People have this perception that tough kids wrestle. But they also laugh because we wear leotards — they’re singlets, but still, they’re leotards. But once my friends found out I was wres-

A Little About Me tling, they were impressed. They know it’s hard.” The toughest part, he says, are the workouts, and remembering all the different moves while thinking quickly and improvising during a match. “We train hard. Even during the off-season, we practice, and it culminates with an hour-long match where you wrestle two people. No matter who you are, everyone cries. It’s designed to break you, so you can see how strong you really are.

Q & A with David What do you like most about wrestling? After a match, I always know that whether I won or lost, I still did something hard. If I

won, I improved; and if I lost, I still tried my best, so if it was a good match, I feel successful. What have you learned from wrestling? I learned self-discipline, how to be more aggressive, and how to overcome obstacles and do hard things. Tell us about a typical match. We start with warm-ups and think about our sequences. We wrestle for 2 minutes at a time, then a break. If one gets pinned down, the match is over. Or, whoever gets the most points at the end of 6 minutes wins. What skills does it take to get good at wrestling? It’s always good to get into a lower weight class, because if you’re normally 182195 pounds, say, you wrestle at 195. We work hard to get down to as low as possible on match days. The day before, we might run wearing a plastic bag, and eat just vegetables and not drink water. But most kids are safe about it; it’s not as bad as it used to be. Who do you admire in wrestling? Every single one of my coaches; they love what they’re doing and I have so much respect for how hard they work. Also, the team captain, Chance Gunter, took me under his wing when I was new. What’s been your favorite moment? Last year during the KingCo Tournament, the kid had me in a wrap around my arms and legs, and I was totally exhausted. I tried to pin him but fell on my back. My coach kept telling me not to let go, and I just felt this surge of strength, and I picked him up and put him on my shoulder. It was incredible. I also won “Most Improved,” and took 6th place overall. What advice do you have for someone thinking about trying wrestling? If you take it on, you have to stick with it and not back off. It’ll suck for awhile, but you can’t back away.

beat

Dr. Christian Manley The Business Behind Building Beautiful Smiles By: Diane Meehl

It all started in middle school. Dr. Christian Manley, a Pacific Northwest native who owns orthodontic practices in Issaquah and Sammamish, coped with his own less than favorable experience back in the day. And it made an impression. His uncle was a dentist, and had referred him to an orthodontist who removed several permanent teeth to alleviate overcrowding before applying braces. “He was trying to help the best he knew how, but those teeth should never have been taken out,” Dr. Manley explains at his location nestled near sleepy downtown Issaquah. Many orthodontists, he explains, will still recommend the removal of adult teeth instead of installing expanders to create more space. “Removal of adult teeth narrows the arches and can cause the facial features to change,” he says. But that experience inspired him to pursue his profession and make wiser recommendations to his own patients. His father, who passionately advocated higher education, he said, had suggested his son become a physician. “I thought orthodontics was a nice alternative. You didn’t have to deliver babies on weekends,” he smiles.

Bracing for Orthodontics: Not just for Teens Anymore We often think of the business of orthodontics mostly involves aesthetics. But the misalignment of the teeth can also cause health problems, such as tooth decay, bone and gum loss, TMJ (pain in the hinge that connects the jawbone to the skull) and other oral health issues. “How the teeth fit together — the bite— is something we examine to prevent breakdown in the future, and affects kids and adults alike,” he says. It’s why braces aren’t just for teens anymore. Often, parents wonder why some orthodontists today begin treatment at such earlier ages than in the past. “We’ve learned more, and our treatment methods have improved. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends initial orthodontic exams for kids beginning at age 7, so we can identify potential problems early.” It’s often best to allow all baby teeth to come out before beginning orthodontic treatment, but he says, some patients benefit from a 2-step process that starts earlier. “I also want all of my patients to be confident. Some orthodon-

Dr. Christian Manley

tists won’t pay attention to aesthetic issues for younger children, but I want all of my patients to have a confident smile.”

Drilling Down: Q&A with Dr. Manley Dr. Manley is a graduate of the Loma Linda Dental School in southern California, and a member of the American Association of Orthodontists, and the Washington State Dental Association. He pursues continuing education and consults with business experts regularly. It’s critical, he says, in offering cutting edge treatment, but also, in running an efficient business with a friendly atmosphere that ensures patient satisfaction. We thought we’d put him to the test with a few questions: What do you think makes a great orthodontist? You have to be good with your hands; bending the wires is something of an art. You have to be among the top 10 in your class, have great rapport with kids and adults, and you have to be a good leader who knows how to hire and motivate good team members. Every single person here has to be exceptional. You also have to stay current. I take classes and attend conferences, and participate in a peer study group. We review each other’s cases and discuss the different treatment methods we would use for the best outcomes. What are parents most often concerned with when they visit? Parents want to know whether their child really needs braces, and then the most common questions are, “how long are they going to take?” and “how much are they going to cost?” What’s the difference in pricing among practices? A lot of it has to do with how long the person has been in practice, so, experience. In the book, Outliers, the author, Malcolm Gladwell says it takes 10,000 hours for an individual to get to the top of their game. That’s a lot of time invested. Also, overhead — here, we hire the best people, and we use the best products on the market.

Most people are familiar with Invisalign and clear braces. Your practice also offers Damon braces; tell us about those. They’ve been around for years and they’re great braces. They don’t require the elastic ties used with other braces; the wires moves with the teeth and allow greater freedom of movement. With Damon braces, you reduce the Dr. Manley and his team number of visits for treatment because there is no need to tighten them, and they align the teeth faster. For busy families, it’s all about speed and convenience. Plus I’ve found we get better results.

Giving Back: The Power of a Helping Hand Dr. Manley and his family, including a 24-year-old, a 21-year-old and just one at home, a senior in high school, live in Kirkland. They stay involved in the community he serves by supporting the local schools. “We donate a lot of auction items for complete treatments to school fundraisers,” he says. It’s important he says, to help the

25

underserved, especially women and children. A former colleague, Dr. Theresa Chang, introduced him to Washington Women in Need, (wwin.org) a nonprofit organization that empowers low-income women to reach their potential. “Once I understood the need, I wanted to help,” he said. Dr. Manley also supports the Smile for a Lifetime Foundation, a non-profit organization that equips underserved people with orthodontic care. Each year the board reviews cases for applicants under 18 years of age, and Dr. Manley offers full services for 6 deserving recipients. So what kind of advice does this seasoned father of three have to offer parents? “The teenage years are tough. But eventually they grow up and they do just fine; I see a lot of my former patients years later, and they turn out to be wonderful people!”

How did your pet come to join your family? Shadow was a rescue cat from the Humane Society. We took her in for two weeks as a foster cat in December of 2011 with the intention of getting to know her a bit and helping them write up a bio for her. She was so sweet that we never returned her! In fact, my husband and son are allergic to her but she is so lovable they wanted her anyway. Funny thing is that when we got her, she had “anorexia” because she wouldn’t eat. They had just removed the IV and told me to feed her up. Well, I did but unfortunately didn’t notice that as time passed she had moved from skinny, to normal and then to pudgy. We have had little success in “dieting” and she is a plus size kitty. She always reminds us at mealtime (6 a.m. & 6 p.m., every day of the week).

Tell us the funniest, smartest or sweetest thing your pet ever did. Shadow is very sweet and loving and never misses out on an opportunity to sit on a lap. One time we had a group of friends over and she was over the moon as she went from lap to lap. Shadow has been banished from our bedroom because of my husband’s allergies but she used to come in to “gently” wake me up in the morning to feed her. She would start out sitting on the bedside table by my face. Then if I didn’t respond she would tap my face with her paw. No response? No problem – she would tap my face with a bit of claw to make sure I didn’t ignore her. (Always super gentle though.)

What’s one piece of advice you’d offer to someone considering this kind of pet?

VCA ALPINE ANIMAL HOSPITAL

Tatiana was the name given to her by the Humane Society. When we took her in, Tatiana didn’t seem to fit so we called her “kitty” for over a year. I hoped she would “name herself” eventually. One thing we had noticed about her personality is that she loves to be with people. Whatever room we are in – she wants to be there. She is a sweet, good-natured kitty and follows me everywhere like a dog would. One day I put two and two together and realized my sweet gray kitty was just like my Shadow. The change in name didn’t faze her a bit.

I have always loved cats, so I have no problem recommending one – they are great, independent pets that can be home all day without problems. In fact, my son informed me that cats sleep roughly 19 hours a day. Based on how much Shadow sleeps, I have no problem believing it now. Her life pretty much consists of eating and then resting from the exertion.

What’s your pet’s favorite food or treat? Food! Shadow is not picky that I have noticed. She likes to beg while I am fixing my lunch and doesn’t object when I give her a bit of cheese.

Holiday Charity That Lasts All Year Long

hristmas is around the corner, and you can fill in for the role of Santa Claus this year! The snowy holiday filled with the sound of jingle bells and the smell of gingerbread is also a time of giving. There are many people who don’t have the pleasure of receiving gifts, or who don’t have anyone to spend Christmas with. The following are different ways you can contribute to charity during the holidays. Volunteer at the Issaquah Food Bank. We don’t need to go too far to donate to the less privileged. Issaquah Food Bank’s mission is “to end hunger one person at a time.” If every time we go to the grocery store, we can pick up one or two more canned items, think of all the people who would benefit. And, it wouldn’t be breaking the bank for us. Website: issaquahfoodbank.org Visit the elderly. A lot of people retire from their hard-working jobs and settle into nursing homes. Their families either live too far away or are too immersed in their jobs to visit senior citizens every year. Well, this year, organize a visit to an elderly person through “The Holiday Project.” Some of the elderly won’t cel-

ebrate Christmas, but you’ll be there to make sure they have a great time. Who knows, you might have fun! “The Holiday Project” exists to provide volunteers the opportunity to donate time to others, while spreading joy. Nursing homes are enjoyable, but you can add even more pep by bringing your friends and starting a Christmas themed dance party! Website: holidayproject.info Make young a child’s dream come true. Many young children in the world have lifethreatening diseases, and sadly, they might not live to see another Christmas. The Make-AWish foundation grants a child’s wish on average every 37 minutes in the United States, and more wishes will be granted when you go to their website with the goal of making a little boy’s or girl’s dream come true. How would you feel if you knew your child wasn’t going to live to make it to adulthood? It would break be heartbreaking, and you would want your son or daughter to have everything they ever wanted so they would be happy. However, parents can’t do it alone. That’s why the Make-A-Wish foundation exists. Website: wish.org I often think we take a lot for granted. We think that heating, food and clothing are basic requirements everyone has. We wrongly assume that each and every person has a coat for the upcoming winter. It’s time to look in your closets. The coat you bought years ago that has hung there forgotten, and was looked over for a better, warmer, trendier coat might be the perfect gift to a person who doesn’t have a roof over their head. I will leave you with this thought. Why is it only around Christmas that we become charitable? Yes, it definitely is the coldest season of the year, but the world would be better place if we all made a conscious effort to donate throughout the year, and help others in need. BAKE’S PLACE: MUSIC TO THE OMNIVORE’S EARS

If you’re into the music scene, you’ve probably heard of Bake’s Place and its reputation as one of the top live music establishments in the world. What you may not know is that the food and cocktails here are as fantastic as the music, whether you are dining outdoors on the lovely patio, enjoying Happy Hour at the bar, or having an intimate dinner for two in the gorgeous dining room with its floor to ceiling windows, rich décor, and romantic lighting. On most Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, you can come listen to a variety of bands for no cover charge (occasionally they will have one depending on the popularity of the band). On Monday nights, football games and other sporting events play on the gigantic 23 ft. x 14 ft. screen (it’s the largest in Bellevue). If you’re looking for a private event venue, Bake’s Place is perfect, accommodating up to 100 guests indoors and 100 plus outdoors, depending on the event.

“We started out as a bed and breakfast in the basement of our house and presented music on Fridays and Saturdays,” explains owner Craig Baker. “Our first location was off the RedmondFall City Highway, but we grew too fast and became a problem to our neighborhood,” he says. They then moved to an Issaquah location before being asked by the Bellevue Downtown Association to consider moving to the city. They knew about the rents in Bellevue, but the owner of Columbia West made them an offer they couldn’t refuse, and they‘ve been here ever since! The space is beautifully decorated in rich, warm hues, with a gorgeous stage backdrop that changes color as you dine. I recently joined some of our residents and sponsors here, where Craig treated us to a fantastic meal and lively conversation. Our servers, Laura and Alex Luna, were excellent, as was Head Chef Ramsel Castro, who personally came out to greet us and answer questions about what he had prepared. Ramsel has been a chef for around 10 years now, and was previously with Purple Seattle before coming to Bake’s Place. The cuisine was excellent, and we were literally stuffed by the end of the evening! The craft cocktails and exquisite wines complemented the meal perfectly, and the desserts of bread pudding, dark chocolate salted caramel pudding, and blueberry bread pudding (seasonal) were heavenly!

Health & WELLNESS Wheel Of — Fitness!

By: Juliana Jade, Owner of Fitness Together Issaquah

With millions of pieces of advice on how to maintain mind and body wellness, I easily find only one worthy subject to focus on to help my clients and readers stay happy and healthy this Holiday Season: simplicity. Elaborate diets and workout plans are impossible to implement without professional guidance. So take a look at the simple truth and practical application of manageable fitness. A solid plan for any fitness goal covers these fundamentals: nutrition, hydration, cardiovascular fitness, strength training, recovery and emotional wellbeing.

Nutrition “Balanced” is a popular word. I prefer “simple.” Load half your plate with non-starchy veggies, the other half — a mix of grains, proteins and fats. We could debate the perfect percentages of macronutrients, but without a dietician by your side, it’s unlikely

to help. As for snacks, load up on fruits. No one’s ever gotten fat from an overload of fruit. Hydration The “eight cups of water per day” rule is based on an ounce of water per kilo of bodyweight. So split your weight in pounds by 2 and you’ll have approximate number of ounces you’ll need each day. That’s what it takes to replenish the fluids lost through evaporation, perspiration and urination — the minimum for a healthy metabolism. When liver and kidneys are dehydrated, metabolism is compromised. Just be cognizant of anything with artificial additives, high calories or diuretic properties. Cardiovascular Fitness The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends one hour of walking per day to maintain a healthy heart. If your goals reach beyond that, either intensity or duration must be increased. Don’t worry about perfect intervals or ideal heart rate. Stay consistent and you’ll be amazed. Strength Training Did you know that Strength Training has much more profound metabolic effects than cardiovascular activity? When you do cardio, your metabolism is accelerated for its duration and about an extra half hour. With resistance training, it’s an extra 2 hours! Besides, the tired feeling after just a few minutes of strength training, is energy used up, making it vital for weight loss and maintenance. Recovery A huge body of research indicates that sleep is essential for normal hormone function. Sleep cycles create an advantage of rest duration in 1.5 hour segments, so 6, 7.5 or 9 hours, depending on your activity level and genetic predisposition. Neglecting it will prevent you from reaping the benefits of your hard work and may even cause you to gain weight. If you need sleep, it must take priority, at least several times a week. Emotional Wellbeing Scientific evidence of mind-body connection defies argument. Its relevance cannot be denied. One leads to the other and while you can start from either end, it is actually much simpler to start with the body. If you’ve experienced post-workout high, you know what I’m talking about. On the flipside, try exercise which is fun: hiking, dance, training with a buddy. It will help you be more consistent and enjoy life just a little bit more. Now take a piece of paper and draw a big circle. Partition it into 6 parts (so it looks like a wheel,) each representing an element of fitness discussed above. In each section write one or two things which may help you in your fitness journey. When the wheel is complete, it’s much easier to roll.

Christmas Mistletoe, An Ancient And Colorful Tradition By Ilse Burch

When you come to think of it, we have a lot of peculiar customs surrounding our major holidays. And Christmas is no exception. Take mistletoe, for example. What has mistletoe got to do with Christmas? When you learn a bit about it, you wonder if mistletoe might not be better used at Halloween! Mistletoe is a plant that grows on other plants, mostly trees, and is fully to partly parasitic, depending on the species (there are about 1400 species of mistletoe all over the world). That means that, in true Vampire fashion, mistletoe sucks its living out of the trees that are hosts — see what I mean about Halloween? The partial parasites have leaves and use the sun's energy to fuel growth, but the full parasites are very odd plants indeed, having no leaves and looking like bunches of tiny asparagus shoots. Mistletoe would be very difficult to grow intentionally and is never seen in plant nurseries, except as sprigs to decorate at Christmas. However, it’s an interesting topic for a Christmasrelated conversation when the topic of what to give for Christmas has started to lose its interest. There are many species of mistletoe in the Pacific Northwest. The most common species are fully parasitic and form witches brooms (which look like a bunch of twigs together that resemble a broom) on various conifer species, causing loss of health in many tree stands, but also, good for wildlife. Our native Garry oak hosts a semi-parasitic species of mistletoe that has leaves and looks like what we think of as mistletoe and is harvested and sold for use as a Christmas decoration locally.

The picturesque custom of using mistletoe as a decoration at Christmas is definitely one of the many pagan elements that have continued despite their predating Christianity for a very long time. The modern Christmas custom has mistletoe sprigs hung in doorways or wherever, and it is considered acceptable and even expected to kiss someone who is situated underneath the sprig of mistletoe. Or at least, if you are positioned under the mistletoe, you aren't expected to refuse a kiss. In some places, in days of yore, a kiss underneath the mistletoe was expected to lead to marriage. So what is the source of this curious mistletoe custom? Turns out, mistletoe has had a following in the very distant past in Greece, where it was associated with the Saturnalia (a rather rowdy harvest festival) and fertility cults, in Norse mythology, and in places like Great Britain where the druids worshiped great oak trees. Many of these huge oak trees would have mistletoe growing on them, and the mistletoe kept its goldencolored leaves when the oak lost them for the winter. Because of this, the druids believed the mistletoe to be a powerful spirit, with Magical powers. In fact, they viewed the mistletoe as being imbued with all the power of the oak. So there you have mistletoe trivia for that Christmas party. If you choose to decorate with mistletoe, you are continuing an ancient pagan tradition that goes back at least 4,000 years. A very colorful tradition that was apparently so precious to the common people that it has continued to this date!
