Past another milestone A

t Asian Business Publications, we round off the year 2017 on a high note. With the support of our readers, sponsors and advertisers, we have gone past several milestones and have set new challenges for the coming year. Indeed, the future looks exciting; and I say that with confidence. Surely the jewel in the diadem of ABPL Group must be the Asian Achievers Awards. In the 2017 Awards, what was most rewarding was the high quality and sheer number of women achievers who outshone their male counterparts. Their achievements in media, art and culture, which was this year's theme, should do us all proud. The entrepreneurial abilities and intellectual timbre of British Asian women have never been in doubt and to showcase their lofty achievements at the Asian Achievers Awards was a matter of pride and joy. I do hope that in the coming years we will see more of them break new barriers, tread paths that have been hitherto untrodden and shape the destiny of future generations not only in the UK but all over the world. Renowned Bollywood actor Farhan Akhtar's presence at the gala was another source of inspiration for all those who dream to excel in media, arts and culture. The gala awards ceremony was attended by over 900 eminent women and men from diverse walks of life. Once again, I cannot thank enough Helen Gordon and her panel of judges for

doing a tremendous and unenviable job in sifting through the nominations and selecting the winners. The Asian Achievers Awards is not only about celebrating high achievers, it is also about giving back to society, especially to the less fortunate. Our esteemed guests in a show of spontaneous generosity and considerable magnanimity donated over ÂŁ180,000 to the nominated charity, Akshaya Patra. The charity's school lunch programme has grown from feeding 1,500 children in the year 2000 to over 1.6 million children in 2017. Last year, the organisation commemorated the serving of 2 billion meals. We are also grateful for the invaluable support of our sponsors who have stood shoulder to shoulder with us in identifying and rewarding British Asian talent. Their support has helped us unearth relatively unknown talent and provide a platform from which to inspire the British Asian community to reach dizzy heights. For the third year running, EY has been the headline sponsors and the prestigious Edwardian Hotels London and Shanti Hospitality, along with others have been our invaluable sponsorship partners. May the winners and nominees of the Asian Achievers Awards fill you with renewed hope and inspire you to make 2018 a truly memorable one. CB Patel Publisher / Editor Asian Voice & Gujarat Samachar

he prestigious Asian Achievers Awards was celebrated on 22nd September 2017 at the Grosvenor Hotel Park Lane, London. Now in its seventeenth year, the gala evening event had a phenomenal turnout with more than 800 high profile guests including entrepreneurs, industry leaders, members of parliament, Lords and Ladies, senior professionals, members of the uniformed services and celebrities.

stole a march over their male counterparts. Nominations for the awards were made by the readers of Asian Voice and Gujarat Samachar and the wider community. The shortlist and winners were selected by an independent panel of judges consisting of eminent women and men from diverse fields. The panel included Helen Gordon (Chief Executive, Royal Society of Medicine), Zishan Nurmohammed (EY), Bianca Miller (The Be Group), Navin Shah AM (Member of London Assembly representing the constituency of Brent and Harrow), Major General Duncan Capps CBE, and former English cricketer Owais Shah. The evening was hosted by the ingenious Nitin Ganatra, as well as the splendid Raageshwari Loomba, both renowned individuals from the entertainment industry. The cherry on

the cake was the multitalented Farhan Akhtar who graced the evening. As glamorous as this event may appear it serves a higher purpose. In the last seventeen years, the Asian Achievers Award has helped raised millions of pounds for various charities. This year's event helped raise over ÂŁ180,000 for charity partner Akshaya Patra, a foundation that strives to tackle issues of classroom hunger and lack of access to education in India by providing free freshly cooked, nourishing school lunches through their Food For Education Programme in government and government-aided schools. Akshaya Patra is currently feeding 1.6 million school children across 11 states in India everyday, and their goal is to be able to feed 5 million children per day by 2020. Commenting on the awards

Editor’s Choice- Excellence in Legal Service Maria Fernandes

Sir Vince Cable, Maria Fernandez, CB Patel, Chairman, Asian Achievers Awards and Nitin Ganatra

Fayyaz Afzal OBE

“I’m absolutely overwhelmed. It’s a huge honour to be nominated but to win is just beyond words. It’s amazing.

Maria Fernandes was born in Kenya and came to the UK at the age of 14. She studied law at Cardiff University College and initially qualified as a barrister. She later switched to becoming a solicitor. She began to specialise in immigration very early on in her career and gained experience initially in a government funded organisation and then in the City. This gave her commercial experience in this field. In 1995 she set up her own firm Fernandes Vaz which specialises exclusively in immigration at all levels. She is deeply passionate about the subject and more particularly about the lives it affects. Maria has been serving as a judge in the Mental Health Review Tribunal since 1995. She has been involved in law at a wider level having served on the Law Society as a council member and as President of the Middlesex Law Society where she remains an Executive member. She has written on immigration for several years and given evidence at the Migration Advisory Committee in support of the shortage of chefs within the hospitality industry.

What winners have to say…

Sivakumar Ramasamy

“I can’t stress enough the importance of sports within our culture. In my opinion, it’s a game changer. It defines who we are as individuals. The attributes and lifeskills that sports teaches you instills in you a feeling that you are as valuable as a doctor, engineer or a lawyer. I’m a prime example of this. Sports is what has defined who I am today”.

Kulbir Pasricha

“As Mahatma Gandhi said, ‘Be the change you want to see in the world’, I joined because I wanted to make a difference to policing and make a difference to my community. I wanted to be a role model and that was 20 years ago. I would say the sky is your limit.”

Gi Fernando MBE

“I feel quite humbled. You’ve got to have quite a lot of resilience and work out why you’re doing something and constantly remind yourself why you’re doing what you’re doing. Stick by it and make sure you get a good team.

Amrit Kaur Lohia

“Know who you are and know where you come from. It’s no use trying to be someone that you’re not. For me, I root myself in my culture and find inspiration. Look into your culture and be inspired by it.”

Saba Nasim BEM

“I’m really surprised. I thought that since there were so many good people in the category I wasn’t going to win. I’m really surprised but delighted that I won. Growing up in a Pakistani household, we always watched cricket matches. Once I finished university, I picked up a cricket bat and started to play cricket. The passion was there to try and teach younger girls and and get them into grass root levels.”

Surinder Arora

Jagdeep Rai

“I’m in shock. I’m absolutely delighted! I never thought I’d win amongst such amazing names. I’m humbled.”

Tanika Gupta MBE

“It’s really important to be recognised, particularly in this sort of environment where it’s mainly business. To be recognised for the arts is actually very nice. Asian artists are not getting enough backing from the mainstream. Certainly if our community was to support us more, it would be wonderful.”

“I’m delighted. This award is actually for the whole Arora family of nearly 3,000 employees. It is with all their hard work that we got the award.”

Lord Indarjit Singh CBE

“It makes me feel very proud and thankful for all those people who helped me.”

Birendra Sasmal

“It’s encouraging. It’s creating value of Asian people throughout the world who want to be entrepreneurs. This kind of recognition means a lot to us because we have to do more for the community.” International Personality of the Year: Farhan Akhtar “What we do is for people, it’s for the audience. And when they turn around and give us the kind of love that we constantly strive for, it does feel good. And when it comes in the form of an award, it’s a bit of a reminder of what it is that we’re doing. The fact that we’re being recognised for our work is something that helps us stay on the path that we’ve chosen, and stay true to the decisions and choices that we've made.”

Maria Fernandes

“I’m amazed, I wasn’t expecting it. It’s been the most amazing night. So many achievers and so inspiring.” ASIAN ACHIEVERS AWARDS 2017 Asian Voice & Gujarat Samachar
