Majesty’s Opposition

I am delighted to send my best wishes to all the nominees in this year’s Asian Achievers

opportunity to pay tribute to the outstanding contribution that make to all walks of life. From business to media, professional sciences, British Asians are breaking the glass ceiling in a wide

honour of my life to serve as Prime Minister of our demonstrate that there should be no barriers for anyone to reflects the amazing success of the British Asian community,

team and everyone at Asian Voice, particularly CB Patel, for the I wish you all a very successful and enjoyable evening.

Foreword

Change. That was the one-word message in the Labour manifesto for the earlier this year. And boy, what change we’ve had around the world.

Bangladesh in January (followed by a sudden change in government), Pakistan in February, India in May, and elections on right Lanka. Britain had a South Asian Prime Minister until recently. running mate, JD Vance, has a Telugu-speaking better half, Usha. The Presidential nominee has a Tamil background. The most promising England is a Pakistani-origin cricketer who made his Test debut in Bashir. The new Mayor of London continues to be the old Mayor London, Sadiq Khan. The Sunday Times Rich List continues to be headed by the Hindujas, the Reuben Brothers, Lakshmi Mittal and, Anil Agarwal at the top tier of the rankings. Former bus conductor and a great public servant, Virendra Sharma, retired from Parliament after 28 years as a Councillor and 17 years as Member of Parliament.

Across so many metrics of success, South Asians have made it to the top in Britain today. Hard work, a sense of community and chutzpah has fuelled our rise.

But there is more to do. As cricketer Azeem Rafique’s new book points out, prejudice has not disappeared, the increase in immigration has fuelled difficult conversations. The riots a few weeks ago saw a resurgence in domestic extremism. The Israel-Palestine conflict has divided communities. The surge in the far-right in France, Germany and the European elections have brought new threats to societal cohesion.

So many South Asian parents tell their kids: get your head down, work hard, keep out of trouble and get a good job. Same with mine. But together as a people, we are perhaps the most influential block in Britain today, across the entire spectrum of the economy and society. The Asian Achievers Awards is about recognising leaders from a range of fields that have gone above and beyond to help their communities and create a better Britain.

The Awards are one part of EPG’s mission to bring together change-makers. Our annual India Week events this year were the largest UK-India business gathering of the year, with more than 1,100 attendees across all our events. Our annual Political & Public Life Awards recognise the public servants that put just that –public service – at the centre of everything they do.

If you are sitting next to one of our Shortlist or Winners, take a little time to congratulate them for putting the ‘Great’ in Great Britain. Best of luck to everyone on the shortlist tonight..

The Baton Passes At The Asian Grocers We’ve

All Grow Up With: Krishan And Shyam Sedani

Go to your local Tesco today and a full range of South Asian groceries are easily available and affordable. But that wasn’t the case a generation ago. The entrepreneurs from East London that brought South Asian groceries to the nation’s consciousness are now transitioning to a new generation of talent.

The story of Quality Foods began in 1981, when Piyush Sedani established a modest shop selling Indian groceries in Upton Park in East London. Supported by his brothers, Arvind and Vipul, Piyush’s business grew steadily. The small shop soon expanded, acquiring a second location nearby, followed by further strategic expansions into neighbouring Forest Gate and Ilford.

By the time the brothers purchased a large location in Ilford in 1992, Quality Foods had firmly established itself as a trusted brand within the South Asian community, offering a range of products that were otherwise near-impossible to find in mainstream supermarkets.

A significant turning point for Quality Foods came in 2006, when the family acquired and modernised a former B&Q warehouse, transforming it into the largest South Asian supermarket in London. This was followed by the addition of another major store in Hounslow in 2011, acquired from a closed Safeway

site. Under Piyush’s leadership, the company also launched its proprietary brand Gulab, offering exclusive, high-quality products for its customers.

Krishan and Shyam Sedani represent the new generation of leadership at the top of the company, helping the family business to cement its name as one of the UK’s most respected names in the South Asian supermarket sector. Their journey is not just one of maintaining a legacy but also of driving it forward into the future, blending tradition with innovation.

When Piyush’s son, Krishan, graduated from King’s College London in 2020, a new chapter began. With a degree in Economics and Management and experience in the banking industry, Krishan was ready for a promising career in finance. But following his father’s declining health, Krishan made the decision to join the family business, a move that proved pivotal after Piyush’s passing in 2021.

Despite his youth, Krishan brought a dynamic and modern approach to the company, combining his academic knowledge with the rich heritage of Quality Foods. He recognised the need for the business to evolve and adapt to changing market dynamics, leading to the modernisation of the company’s operations.

One of Krishan’s most significant achievements was the launch and rapid expansion of Quality Foods’ online store. From zero sales on its first day to £3.5 million within two years, this venture not only highlighted Krishan’s business awareness but also positioned Quality Foods as a forward-thinking brand in the digital age.

Krishan’s older brother, Shyam, has also played a crucial role in the company’s digital transformation while continuing to oversee the physical stores. Together, they have successfully blended their father’s legacy with their own vision for the future, ensuring that Quality Foods remains a symbol of innovation and excellence within the retail industry. Quality Foods has today grown to employ over 250 staff, with an annual turnover of more than £60 million. The company has built strong alliances with suppliers worldwide, bringing a diverse array of products to communities across the UK. As Krishan and Shyam guide the company onwards, their dedication to the family legacy, coupled with their ambition and innovative spirit, ensures that Quality Foods will continue to thrive and grow in a market that looks very different from 1981.

Together, we can end leprosy in India

LEPROSY STILL EXISTS.

You may think that leprosy is an ancient disease, but today it continues to devastate the lives of people living in poverty across South Asia. Every year, around 200,000 new cases of leprosy are reported. Shockingly, over 60% of these are in India.

EVEN THOUGH THERE IS A CURE, LEPROSY ROBS PEOPLE OF FAMILY, JOBS, AND DIGNITY.

Severe discrimination means many people with leprosy hide their symptoms for as long as possible, living in fear of what will happen to them. This means the number of people with the disease is much higher than reported.

If leprosy is not cured quickly, it can cause blindness and loss of feeling in hands and feet. If you can’t feel pain, daily tasks become fraught with danger. Hands get burned while cooking, and walking on sharp stones injure your feet. Injuries often ulcerate, which can then lead to amputation. Your fingers curl inwards and won’t straighten, making it impossible to care for your children or hold a tool to work in the fields. All of this adds to your daily struggle with poverty.

POVERTY CAUSES LEPROSY. LEPROSY MAKES POVERTY WORSE. YOU CAN HELP BREAK THIS CYCLE.

For many of the people we serve, the pain of rejection is the worst thing about a leprosy diagnosis. Fear and misconceptions about leprosy mean that even today, people with the disease are thrown out of family and community. They are left to live a life of rejection and loneliness.

WHAT IS LEPROSY?

Leprosy is a disease caused by bacteria. It is believed to be spread by airborne water droplets (like a sneeze).

Leprosy is a disease of poverty. It can strike anyone with low immunity caused by malnutrition, poor sanitation, and basic living conditions.

Leprosy is cured with three antibiotics called Multidrug therapy. But if not treated quickly, the disease causes nerve damage, which leads to disability.

Over three million people live with disability caused by leprosy.

Today, someone will be diagnosed with leprosy every two minutes.

TOGETHER, WE CAN CHANGE THE FUTURE FOR PEOPLE AFFECTED BY LEPROSY.

For 150 years, The Leprosy Mission has been the leading international development organisation focused on combatting leprosy. We will not stop until every person affected by leprosy is found, cured, and supported to build a future filled with hope.

Every life we transform is only made possible by the compassion of people like you. Together we can bring long-term, meaningful change to communities and transform lives forever, by providing:

• The cure for leprosy

• Specialist surgery, prosthetics and mobility aids

• School screening and medical camps

Celebrating ‘Free to Be Me’: South Asian Heritage Month 2024

Since our launch in 2020, South Asian Heritage Month (SAHM) has been a time of reflection, celebration, and education, shedding light on the rich tapestry of cultures, histories, and contributions of South Asian communities in the UK. This year, the theme ‘Free to Be Me’ resonated deeply with many, including myself, as it highlights the essence of identity, self-expression, and the freedom to live authentically.

‘Free to Be Me’ is not just a slogan; it’s a powerful statement of individuality and acceptance. For me, this theme is incredibly significant, as it allows me to express my full identity with its plethora of intersections. I am British, I am Punjabi, I am Sikh, I am a married gay man, I am a barrister, I am a community activist, I am a promoter of many forms of culture and arts. All those elements form my unique identity. This year’s theme encapsulated the journey many of us have undertaken—the struggle to be accepted for who we are, not only by society but also by ourselves.

South Asian Heritage Month: Origins and Future Plans

South Asian Heritage Month, running from 18 July to 17 August each year, serves as a pivotal platform for this celebration of identity and heritage. It was established to highlight the significant contributions

of South Asians to British society and to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of South Asian cultures among all communities. The month coincides with significant dates, particularly in respect of the events of 1947 with the independence of India, the creation of Pakistan, and the partition of Punjab and Bengal. The dates acknowledge the complex histories and shared legacies of the region as a whole.

The inception of SAHM was driven by a need to create a space where the rich histories, cultures, and contributions of South Asian communities could be recognised and celebrated. It provides an opportunity for reflection on the journey of South Asians in the UK—from the colonial era and the early migration waves to the present day, where South Asians have become an integral part of British society. The month aims to educate, inform, and inspire, bringing to light stories that have often been overlooked or forgotten.

Looking ahead, the vision for South Asian Heritage Month is to expand its reach and impact across the UK and around the world. SAHM hopes to instil a sense of pride and understanding in younger generations and to build stronger, more inclusive communities.

Celebrating South Asian Excellence and Achievements

One of the key objectives of SAHM is to celebrate the excellence and achievements of South Asians across various fields. From arts and culture to science and politics, South Asians have made remarkable contributions to British society. Recognising and celebrating these achievements is crucial, not only to honour those who have excelled but also to inspire future generations.

The importance of celebrating South Asian excellence lies in its ability to challenge stereotypes and break down barriers, and by providing role models for those who may be struggling with aspects of their identities.

Celebrating achievements helps to build a sense of community and solidarity. It fosters a collective pride in our heritage and encourages us to support and uplift one another. By sharing our stories of success, we can create a narrative that is inclusive and empowering, showing the world the true potential and diversity of the South Asian communities

“The month coincides with significant dates, particularly in respect of the events of 1947 with the independence of India, the creation of Pakistan, and the partition of Punjab and Bengal.”

For me personally, ‘Free to Be Me’ is a reminder of the power of authenticity and the strength found in embracing one’s heritage holistically and without compartmentalisation. Let’s take this opportunity to reflect on our own journeys, support each other, and continue to build a society where everyone is free to be their true selves.

Together, let’s celebrate our stories, our achievements, and our unique identities. Let us celebrate the freedom to be who we truly are!

“Bit Of Storytelling And Improv, Focusing On Heritage And Just General Life”: Noreen Khan

What inspired you to become a presenter?

How did you land your first job?

I loved music as a child and at school I played various instruments. I grew up listening to lots of radio and would always think, being a radio DJ seems like such a cool job, I think I’ll do that one day! So the seed was planted by listening to other presenters on radio and watching them on TV and it inspired me to want to do the same.

I started volunteering in my local hospital’s radio station and from there I applied for a presenter’s role in a London commercial radio station and got the job!

What got you into stand-up comedy? How would you describe your comedic style or approach?

I’ve always loved watching stand up comedians and again I thought I’d like to do that one day! Then one day I asked a comedy promoter if he’d give me a slot on one of his gigs and he said yes. So in 2016 I did my first ever gig and it actually went really well and I was hooked!

I’d say my comedy style is observational, with a bit of storytelling and improv focusing on heritage and just general life.

How do you think the concept of representation will evolve with the influence of the next generation?

I very much hope we will see more and more representation in all aspects of our society in the coming generations. Even though we’ve made progress in some fields and areas I still think we have some way to go. The younger generation need to see good, strong representation to help inspire them to go on and do the same. So we all need to work together to help the progression.

What is your reason or motivation for taking yoga?

Interestingly yoga came into my life when I was 16 via my older sister. She was at Uni and had a huge collection of books. She gave me a book which was based around natural health and beauty and suggested read the yoga section as she had started practicing yoga from this book. I read the whole chapter on yoga a few times and started trying out the breathing exercises and poses. That’s it, yoga was then firmly a part of me and has been ever since.

Why is it important to celebrate South Asian success today?

Oh it’s extremely important for us to recognise, appreciate and celebrate our successes to help encourage more of it. I think anything positive, inspirational and meaningful which can benefit us as a society should be highlighted.
